LARRY NORMAN'S COMPLEAT DISCOGRAPHY (almost) V.3.8 ================================================== Last updated: 09/24/99 9:20 CST Updates added in this version: - MGM Promo 45 of Righteous Rocker - Info on the Tune CD - Info on Radical Tulips video - Info on Without Introduction video - Credit to Gord Wilson for CCM comments - LP Version of Live at Flevo Well, I've finally got some time to update this thing. I know Larry has put out some new stuff in the last year or so, so please send my any updates. You'll notice that in many cases there are many versions of the same album out there, sometimes with just small order changes in songs. There seems to be European versions of many albums which differ slightly from their US counterparts. I have tried to correspond the spelling of an individual song to it's spelling on the album/tape/CD cover. They differ from one place to another. An example is "Why Don't you Look Into Jesus," "Why Doncha Look Into Jesus" and "Why Don't you Look Into Jezus." This discography is extensive, but probably far from complete. I think it is fairly accurate, as I have most of the albums. But, I would appreciate any and all corrections/additions. The album comments are mostly from Phydeaux literature, CCM Magazine (thanks to Gord Wilson), and some are mine. -Bryan Moore Please send any comments, additions, corrections to aslan@io.com People! - I Love You (Capitol, 1966 - ST-2924) ---------------------------------------------- Cover has a cartoon drawing of the band on the front. On the back a few members are standing behind an iron gate almost as if they were in jail. A youthful Larry and another are in front of the gate. Nicknamed "the Sgt. Pepper of Christianity," this counterculture classic launched gospel rock, and simultaneously spawned the youth group favorites, "I Wish We'd All Been Ready" and "Sweet Song of Salvation." Later released on Impact(1970) and Kingsway(England). USA TODAY printed the results of a national poll which voted this album the most "significant" gospel album of the last twenty years. Also (Heart Warming, 1969 - RC-3121). Heart Warming/Capitol versions list song Prelude before first song (which doesn't actually exist on the Heart Warming album as a song). The CD is listed as (Kingsway Classics/UK, 1989 - KMCD-2101). Powerfully captures a moment when a kid with a guitar could change the world. Side two features "She's a Dancer," "Six O'clock News" and other cuts from Noman's rock opera, Lion's Breath. There is a version of this with Randy Stonehill and White Light on side 2. ========================================================================== (Live Concert Hollywood) Baby out of Wedlock First Day in Church One Way PeacePollutionRevolution Blue Shoes White Right Here in America I've Searched all Around I Wish We'd all Been Ready No More LSD for Me Jim Ware's Blues (Why Doncha Look) Street Level (Phydeaux, 1983 - ARF-86-9) also (One Way - JC-7397) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Side two is different. Little-heard Norman numbers with a live interview and monologue, "Let the Lions Come" and "Jesus in the Movies." Re-released on cassette with two extra tracks, "The Whole World" and "He's the One" from Norman and Randy Stonehill's first-ever studio session together (Phydeaux, 1988). Also (One Way, 1971 - JC-4847), One Way versions do not have "Whole World." The re-released Bootleg (Phydeaux) LP came out in May of 1990. It came out in the original double fold jacket with the red outline "Bootleg" on the cover. The labels are red with black printing. On the 4th side written in the vinyl is 1/4/89. The only difference from the original is that on the first disk the first song is 'He's Got The Whole World.' Here's what the order form said about it, "Bootleg- Double album, original 1971 jackets, extra-but-unlisted song on the original pressing format, original 1971 red labels, current date etched on the play-out groove to maintain price integrity for hard-core collectors." In January of 1990 Phydeaux also released Bootleg with blank white labels. This was a special offer to those who sent in for a special offer that was in the CD booklet of 'Home At Last.' One version has JC 4444 on one side of the cover, and JC 5555 on the other. Another version has JC 4444 on the back cover. The album cover is primarily white, with a collage of a big crowd of 70's Jesus Movement types and a couple of cut out heads. There are no song titles listed anywhere on the cover or record label. Apparently it has a lot of LN stuff from other albums. It is possible that it is the selection of LN songs that the producers of the Son Worshippers film selected for the films soundtrack. ========================================================================== Jesus Sound Explosion: Recorded live at Explo '72 (Explo 72/ Creative Sound) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- On the back of the LP in small print is the following: "This album is not for sale. Humor, confidence, and blues featuring Jon Linn's great guitar leads. For my money, Norman's tour de force. Highlights: "Watch What You're Doing" and the autobiographical "Let the Tape Keep Rolling." Extended cassette re-release includes longer, more musical mixes plus track "Twelve Good Men" (Phydeaux, 1989). There is a lyrics booklet that mentions a full-length unedited version of the album which is a double disc set that was issued in 1977 and contained The Tune. There is also a UK version with different versions of "I Feel Like Dying" and "Watch What You're Doing." There is no intro to "97th Nightmare" and the cover is slightly different. As Calix brought me up to speed on Larry's career it was clear to me that "pioneering new ground" was something that Larry and I had in common. One thing led to another and somehow, some way, I ended up with this re-mix project. First came the delicate process of transferring Larry's original master tapes, some of which are 25 years old, to ADATs. We wanted to use as much of the original tracks in the remixes as possible although I knew the amount of original tracks used in the remixing process would differ from song to song, depending on what direction we decided to take each song. Some of the remixes only use Larry's original vocal tracks and others use all of the original instruments with new ones added. We felt it important to approach the project from several musical styles and not simply "House" everything out. So, I gathered together a team of talented young producers (Greg and Stefan from Virus, Brian Hardin of Wonder in Blue, Joey Bellville from the Echoing Green, Paul Dexter from Pacific ent., Aaron DeLaCruz and myself.) This project was a challenge, and I wish to thank Larry for the opportunity, and all of the musicians and remixers fo a bang up job. -Scott Blackwell, President N Soul Records ========================================================================== If The Bombs Fall I Wish We'd All Been Ready Wy Should The Devil Have All The Good Music Fly, Fly, Fly Sweet Song Of Salvation Why Don't You Look Into Jesus I Am A Servant U.F.O One Way God Part Three One Way - The Songs Of Larry Norman (Forefront, ) ------------------------------------------------- DC Talk, Geoff Moore, Code of Ethics, Holy Soldier, and other talented artists have taken a completely different approach to Larry's songs. ========================================================================== U.F.O. - Geoff Moore & The Distance Sweet Song of Salvation - Rebecca St. James The Great American Novel - Big Tent Revival Why Don't You Look Into Jesus - Holy Soldier Shot Down - Michael Anderson Righteous Rocker #3 - Audio Adrenaline One Way - Serene & Pearl The Outlaw - Dana Key Nothing Really Changes - Code of Ethics Six O'clock News - Grammatrain Why Should The Devil Have All The Good Music - Geoff Moore & The Distance The Rock That Doesn't Roll - Larry Howard If God is my Father - E.T.W. There is a punk performance of Larry and the Young Lions doing Steve Scott's 'More than a Dream.' There's a national television ad for Larry's 'greatest hits,' complete with an 800 number and unreleased songs like 'That's What Love is For,' 'You Did it For Me.' ========================================================================== Songs For the Future Underground - Video ---------------------------------------- The angry and political concert in a dark cellar at a ski chalet. ========================================================================== Live and Kicking - Video (1992) ------------------------------- This one hour video was produced by Brad Mix and his crew. This video (taken from the private archives of Sound International) documents all his concerts in the city from 1985-1995, with some of his very best performances caught on camera. ========================================================================== Sweet Sweet Song of Salvation Woman Of God 666 I Wish We'd All Been Ready Song For A Small Circle of Friends It's Only Today That Counts Moses If The Bombs Fall The Outlaw Goodbye, Farewell Great American Novel Messiah The Rock That Doesn't Roll Radical Tulips - Video (1996) ----------------------------- This is the video of Larry's European tour in 1995. It was performed in the walled city of Elburg, Holland, and contains a lot of surprises in the choice of material including music that Larry composed live on stage. ========================================================================== Without Introduction - Video (1996) ----------------------------------- This video captures a very emotional and inspirational experience. The audience was deeply moved by what Larry was saying on stage and had no idea about the conspiratorial drama going on backstage before his appearance. Only upon leaving the stage did the master of ceremonies suddenly appear, mumbling to the audience in an attempt to disguise the turmoil. In the months leading up to the festival there had been unttrue rumors going around about Larry. The same group of ex-associates that were instrumental in the CCM article which said that Larry had become a black cloud (had turned away from his friends, family, and church) were apprently behind these rumors and lies. The video inadvertently reveals who has been behind these lies. ========================================================================== Other Albums Produced By Larry ------------------------------ The Gap - Bryn Haworth Songs From The Earth - Lyrix with Mark Williamson Horrendous Disc - Daniel Amos (Actually *presented* by LN, produced by Mike Stone and Daniel Amos) Hit The Switch - Pantano-Salsbury Invisible Warfare - Alwyn Wall Welcome To Paradise - Randy Stonehill Appalachian Melody - Mark Heard View From The Bridge - Tom Howard Future Eyes - Sheila Walsh Moving Pictures - Steve Scott I Remember - Little Bobby Emmons Other Albums Mentioned By Phydeaux, That I Don't Think Were Ever Released ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Closeups - Steve Scott (This title was changed to MOVING PICTURES) title not yet selected - The Barratt Band title not yet selected - Sarah Finch Banned - The Solid Rock Blues Band World War Six - The Ampz The Class Of 1994 - Little Bobby Emmons and the Crosstones Fire And Ice - Steve Scott Here is a listing of other LN albums I've seen mentioned in various places, but I have never seen them, and am not sure they exist in released form.
