“Making
art for me is a way of communicating. Initially, it's a conversation
with the cloth, coloring it, printing it, layering it with imagery
until I achieve my message. It then becomes a dialogue with
the viewer - inviting emotions, not necessarily those I intended,
but a response, nevertheless. Producing cloth is tactile evidence
that we were here and left something of value - a mirror of
ourselves and our accomplishments. Making cloth and quilts is
a natural continuation of the tradition of contributions that
women bring to their cultures, although I admit to a preference
for breaking the rules.”
