Daffodil Hexagonal Afghan Pattern
The hexagonal "square" that you will be making is shown at right. One skein of
Caron Simply Soft Brites in Lemonade will get you approximately 15 daffodils using
an H hook. I don't know how many skeins you'd need to get coverage for your
average sofa or bed quite yet (October 2005), but when the afghan is finished,
I'll be sure to include that information.
You'll need an H hook, and worsted weight yarn in a nice bright yellow, forest
green, and white.
This is a terrible cop-out, but ... um ... refer to the picture if anything's
confusing. O:-)
Making the Daffodil
- Round 1:
-
Chain 6 and join to form a ring. Counting ch3 as the first dc in all subsequent rounds,
make 18dc in this ring. Join last dc to top of first ch3 in the typical manner.
- Round 2:
-
2dc in each dc. Join to top of first ch3. 36 dc total.
- Round 3:
-
sc in next 6dc. Ch4, turn.
(sc in sc, ch3) 3 times. Ch1, dc. Ch4, turn. (In all subsequent rounds, the c1-dc will count as a ch3 sp.)
(sc in ch3 sp, ch3) 2 times. Ch1, dc. Ch4, turn.
(sc in ch3 sp, ch3) 1 time. Ch1, dc. Ch4, turn.
sc in ch3 sp. Cut.
What you've done here is effectively make a little pineapple as the first petal of the daffodil. Make
five more of these, and cut the yarn.
- Round 4:
-
You are going to make the trumpet of the daffodil now. Again counting a ch3 as the first dc in
each round, make 18dc about the posts of each of the 18dc from Round 1. Join to the top of the first ch3.
- Round 5:
-
Again counting a ch3 as the first dc in this round, make 2dc in the first dc, and 1 dc in the next.
Continue this 2dc-1dc going around. Join into the top of the first ch3. 27 dc total.
Making the Rest of the Hexagon
Attach the green.
- Round 6:
-
sc in the top of any petal. Ch6, and make a 2tr cluster between the petals. Making the 2tr cluster
is a two-step process. First look at the pineapple-petals and find the row that has three loops in it.
You'll be making a 2tr cluster between those loops. (Jeez, I really need a better way to define
this. I'll try to make a visual chart. For now, I think the picture will give you a good idea
of what I'm describing.)
To make a 2tr cluster, yo twice, and insert the hook in the noted pineapple loop. Yo and pull through
twice, leaving the last loop on the hook. Yo twice again, and insert the hook in the corresponding
loop on the next petal. Yo and pull through twice, and then yo and pull through all three loops on
the hook.
Ch 6, and sc in the tip of the next petal.
Do this all the way around the daffodil.
- Round 7:
-
In each ch6 sp, make 2sc, 2hdc, 3dc, 2hdc, 2sc.
Cut the green and attach the white.
- Round 8:
-
sc in the center dc of any of the previous stitch groupings. Ch 8, dc-ch2-dc in the center dc of
the next stitch grouping. Ch 8.
Go around the entire flower in this manner.
- Round 9:
-
Again, counting a ch3 as the first dc in this round, dc in sc, 8dc in the ch 8 sp, dc in dc.
dc-ch2-dc in ch 2 sp, dc. 8 dc in ch 8 sp. Continue this around.
- Round 10:
-
Again, counting a ch3 as the first dc in this round, dc in dc, dc-ch2-dc in ch 2 sp.
Cut the white and attach the green.
- Round 11:
-
Back-post dc in each dc, dc-ch2-dc in ch2 sp. Continue around, join. Cut.
If you find any problems with this, please-please-please
let me know. Seriously, it's after 11pm here and I'm listening
to Welsh rock, so I might have put in a few errors. If so, apologies offered, and I'll be
sure to correct them.
