The Ann Arbor Dawn Dance
is held in early April. This year it featured Susan Kevra calling with Evening Star.
The Asheville Summer Soiree
is held in in summer.
Brattleboro Dawn Dances
are famous throughout the hemisphere and are held in Brattleboro, Vermont, around New Year's Eve, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor day. See Peter Olszowka's info page for schedules.
Breaking up Thanksgiving
is held the weekend after Thanksgiving near Volo, a Chicago exurb.
The Charlottesville Fall Dance Festival
is held in mid-October in Charlottesville, Virginia. The ceiling decoration must be seen to be believed.
NEW!Dance Awakening
is held at Harbin Hot Springs, a wonderful clothing-optional camp in the hills near Calistoga, CA, north of San Francisco. Clothing IS required in and around the dance hall!
CHANGED!The Dance Flurry
is sponsored by the Hudson Mohawk Country Dancers, and is held in Saratoga Springs, New York, in February. It usually conflicts with the Knoxville Dance Weekend.
NEW!The Downeast Country Dance Festival
is held in early March.
Fiddlehead dance weekends
are held twice a year, in May and September, at a girl's camp in the town of Black Mountain, near Swannanoa and just east of Asheville.
CHANGED!Fiddling Frog
is held by the California Dance Co-Operative near Los Angeles.
newThe Gypsy Meltdown
is held in late March by the Charlotte Dance Gypsies and the Charlotte Country Dancers.
NEW!The Gypsy Moon Ball
is held in late October at a YMCA camp near Shelbyville, Indiana. It's one of the nicest Halloween dances I've ever attended. The floor is wonderful, and there's a potluck dinner and a midnight dessert potluck.
NEW!Harvest Moon Festival
is held in Santa Barbara.
Hey! Louisville
is apparently gone for now. Formerly known as the Louisville Spring Thing.
Kimmswick spring and fall dance weekends
widely regarded as "one of the three best things in life," occur near St Louis. 1995 was their last year at the traditional Kimmswick site--a rural site with a barn with a loft to sleep in, a creek, and showers rented from the motel down the road, and a tiny dance hall immortalized on a lovely t-shirt.
Knoxville Dance Weekend
is held by the Knoxville Country Dancers in mid-February. One of the hottest weekends I've ever been to, it usually conflicts with the Dance Flurry. Serious dance gypsies can fly to Santa Cruz for the Dawn Dance on Sunday night, and then go to Fiddling Frog.
Lost Pines dance weekends
are held several times a year.
May Apple Stomp
is held in May in Columbus, Ohio. This year it'll be May 20-21, 1995. Camping is provided, but no showers, and it costs $10. See the blurb.
The New England Folk Festival Association
hosts a dance weekend near Boston in late April, comonly called NEFFA.
NEW!The Palmetto Bug Stomp
is held on the beach in Charleston, South Carolina in late March. Beach houses may be available for rent.
The Pigtown Fling
is held in March near the University of Cincinnati. It's known for much silliness involving pigs (one year they had flying pig earrings and pins cast from pewter) and for pig t-shirts, of which several old designs are still available.
The Santa Cruz Dawn Dance
is held on President's Day weekend in February, usually on Sunday, so you can fly there from the Knoxville Dance Weekend and go to Fiddling Frog a week later. There's a midnight potluck supper and the scones at breakfast are wonderful--send me the recipe.
Sierra Swing
is the Bay Area Country Dance Society's summer American dance week, at a new location near King's Canyon National Park, California. For information, e-mail to Clint Gilbert
The Spring Dance Romance
is held in late April in the Triangle area of North Carolina.
Swing into Spring
is held in early April (this year it's April 7-9) at McCormick's Creek State Park near Bloomington, Indiana. A do-it-yourself weekend with a potluck supper on Saturday night, this costs only $10. Another do-it-yourself weekend on the model of Sugar Hill. The site has a smooth concrete floor.
NEW!Swing 'n' Hey
is held by the Santa Cruz/Monterey Country Dancers in Corralios at the Grange Hall.
Sugar Hill
is held in late August. A do-it-yourself weekend at the Ramsburg Reservation (a Boy Scout camp on Lake Monroe) near Bloomington, Indiana, this was the inspiration for Balance and Swim. We dance all night, hang out and swim and eat all day, and then dance all night again. Bring your cards and instruments! Callers are limited to two dances and bands to two hours a night. And bring your tents, cabin space is very limited.
When in Doubt, Swing
is held in Dallas in April.
