Saturday, June 3, 2006 - Every CP Classic runner set personal records in all events from the 800 and up at the AAU Texas Heat Track Meet at Nelson Field in Austin.  That is simply amazing.  In the history of the CP Classic, I don't recall a meet where every team member set a personal record in all event that we competed in.  Results like that don't happen by accident, they are the result of the athletes' hard work, planned strategy, and execution of race plan, regardless of the weather or other competitors.  Way to go Classic!

Also competing in the national meet and running well for the CP Classic were Jordan Pfaff, 62nd in the Midget Boys (1993-94) 3000-meter race in 10:59.23.  In the Intermediate Boys (1989-90) 5000-meter race were Blake Lilley and Richard McEvoy-Kemp, who respectively placed 113th in 18:48.26.

AAU South Texas District Championships sees nine CP Classic runners qualify for Nationals

Sunday, November 20, 2005 - Nine runners from the CP Classic Track Club qualified for the AAU Cross Country National Championships by placing in the top-20 of their age divisions at the AAU South Texas District Championships at Judson High School in Converse.  Running in very windy conditions had an effect on race strategies, but their aggressive running led to five medals, including two victories by Ashley Isham and Jesse Devlyn, sort of...  Isham dominated the Youth Girls (born 1991-92) division, winning by a margin of 54 seconds.  Devlyn in the Bantam Boys (1995 and later) division was in an exciting battle for the first and broke away from his challenger near the finish when the lead vehicle turned off course, drawing Devlyn off course as well.  By the time Devlyn turned around and got back on course, he was in third place which is where he finished.  Meet officials realized the mistake and gave Devlyn the gold medal at the award ceremony.

Additional CP Classic runners earning top-3 medals were: Jordan Pfaff, who ran a spectacular race to grab second place in the Midget Boys (1993-94) division; Taylor Dayton, who continued his notable and improving year of running with a second place in the Youth Boys (1991-92) division; and Nico Medrano, who ran a blazing finish to move up through the field to second place in the Young Men (1987-88) division.

Also qualifying for AAU Nationals were: Richard McEvoy-Kemp, sixth in the Intermediate Boys (1989-90) division; Trey Booker and Miles Pierce, seventh and eighth respectively in the Youth Boys division; and Blake Lilley, eighth in the Intermediate Boys division.

Race for the Cure should've been called Race in the Humidity

Sunday, November 6, 2005 - Where's that fall chill?  The October races for the CP Classic were blessed with cool, perfect running conditions, but that's not so as the November races begin.  Reverting back to summer heat and humidity, this morning's Race for the Cure 5K greeted the 21,000 runners with with sweltering conditions at Auditorium Shores in Austin.  The weather conditions had a sapping effect on the runners, causing most runners to run well off their PRs (personal records) with a few notable exceptions as Taylor Dayton and Jordan Pfaff raced to all-time PRs.  In the Female Overall division, last year's champion, 14-year-old Ashley Isham managed to bring home a bronze medal for third overall with a strong 19:12.  Medalists on the boy's side were Nico Medrano, who won the Male 15-19 division in 17:27, Richard McEvoy-Kemp (18:33) taking third place in the Male 15-19 division, and Dayton (18:53) raced to third place in the Male 14 & Under division.  Also running well for the CP Classic in the Male 14 & Under were: Trey Booker (20:04) in 7th place, Pfaff (20:21) in 8th place, Jesse Devlyn (23:18) in 20th place, and Skylar Liner (26:42) in 33rd place.

Isham and Booker bring home 1st place trophies from the Jameson 5K

Saturday, October 22, 2005 - Running in cool, windy conditions made the hilly 5K course more enjoyable for the 250+ runners at the Jameson 5K at Georgetown's Southwestern University.  The downhill first mile got the runners off to a fast start, then the race was on to handle the uphill portions in the second half of the race.  While the hills during the race and the long uphill finish slowed times a bit, they could do nothing to stop Ashley Isham and Trey Booker from claiming first place trophies.  Isham won the female overall, outlasting women of all ages with a time of 18:58.  Booker was close behind with a strong PR (personal record) performance in 19:35 to claim the Boys 13 and Under division.  Also running with very strong showings in the Boys 13 and Under division were Jordan Pfaff, 4th in 21:35; Jesse Devlyn, 6th in 22:50; and Skylar Liner, 8th in 26:03.

Sunday, October 9, 2005 - A welcome change in the weather brought a morning of perfect running conditions with temperatures in the high 50s and clear skies, inviting the CP Classic to a dominating performance at the Cedar Perk 5 Miler.  In a continuation of the hurricane-disrupted season, the CP Classic harriers brought home several trophies including winning the overall female, boys 11 and under, boys 15-19, and sweeping the boys 12-14 age divisions.  Ashley Isham won the overall female title in a time of 30:34.8;  Skylar Liner won the boys 11 and under in 42:13.3;  Richard Doelger (30:11.4), Trey Booker (32:11.8), and Taylor Dayton (32:56) swept places 1, 2, and 3 the boys 12-14 division; and Richard McEvoy-Kemp was the victor in the boys 15-19 age group in 29:45.4.  Also running great races in the extremely competitive boys 12-14 division were Alek Zayas-Dorchak (5th, 34:05.2) and Jordan Pfaff (9th, 36:35.4).

State records and personal records at the TAAF Games of Texas

Thursday-Sunday, July 21-24, 2005 - The TAAF Games of Texas State Championships at the Hart-Patterson Track Complex at Baylor University in Waco were very competitive, yet very successful for the CP Classic distance runners.  The CP Classic hauled in a couple state records and top-3 medals to go along with numerous PRs (personal records), club records, and top-9 ribbons throughout the meet.

Ashley Isham, TAAF's 2004 Female Athlete of the Year, who this year matched her 2004 victory and state record total but in an even more dominant fashion, winning two gold medals and breaking two state meet records.  Competing in the Junior Girls  / 14 & Under division (born 1991-92) Isham won the 1600 Meters in a time of 5:23.41 with a margin of victory of 13.48 seconds over second place.  Isham won 3200 Meters in 11:35.62, 43.88 seconds in front of second place and her 3200 meter record is the fastest of all TAAF age divisions records for the event.  Nikki Chronis in the Midget Girls / 12 & Under division (born 1993-94) 800 Meters employed a smart strategy to dominantly win her heat, place fifth overall, and earned a ribbon with a time of 2:40.69.  Taylor Dayton in the Junior Boys / 14 & Under division (born 1991-92) 1600 Meters ran with tremendous courage to move up through the pack late in the race to capture the fifth place ribbon in 5:08.21.  Andrew Stefani claimed his ribbon in the Pee Wee Boys / 8 & Under division (born 1997 and later) 800 Meters with a strong and very fast 2:52.49 to earn sixth place overall.

14 CP Classic athletes qualify in 21 events at the TAAF Region 3 Qualifier

Tuesday, July 5, 2005 - The TAAF Region 3 Qualifier Meet at New Braunfels High School in New Braunfels offered a great opportunity for 14 CP Classic athletes to continue their seasons, where they qualified in 21 events for the TAAF Games of Texas State Championships at Baylor University in Waco later this month.  The weather was sweltering at over 100 degrees and there is the AAU national qualifier competition later this week, so some took it as easy as possible here to qualify (top three positions qualify), whereas some events and divisions were very competitive and some athletes had to put forth hard efforts.  Regardless of the conditions surrounding the competition, many great efforts were recorded, proving that the effort, discipline, and structured training of the athletes are pointing towards a great season finale in a few weeks.

Friday-Sunday, June 24-26, 2005 - The AAU South Texas District is the largest and most competitive district in country and it showed at the AAU South Texas District Championships at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio.  Amidst the tough competition arose the CP Classic distance runners, who qualified for the AAU Region 9A Championships in nine events, earned four medals, and ran away with two victories.  Some of the performances have athletes as certain favorites to move on to the AAU Jr. Olympic Games National Championships, including some top national marks.

For the second year in a row, Ashley Isham notched a double victory in the Youth Girls (born 1991) 1500- and 3000-meter runs.  Isham won both races by large margins with times of 4 minutes 58.6 seconds in the 1500 and 10:42.5 in the 3000.  Isham's 3000 time is the fastest in the nation in the AAU this year for the Youth Girls division.  Other double-event qualifiers were Gabby Aguilar and Miles PierceAguilar ran strong in the Midget Girls (born 1993) 3000-meters in 12:37.0 to bring home the third place medal and she will also move on in the 1500 in 6:01.5.  Pierce qualified in both the Sub Youth Boys (born 1992) 1500- and 3000-meter runs with times of 5:12.3 and 11:32.0, respectively.  Pierce was in medal position with 200 meters to go in the 3000, but had severe stomach distress, almost causing him to drop out, but he gathered himself to finish in a qualifying position.  First-year athlete Andrew Stefani powered to a strong second place to medal in the Primary Boys (born 1997 and later) 800-meter in 2:58.6.

The summer track season continues at Alamo Stadium - rainy, hot, and fast

Saturday, May 28, 2005 - Although it's still early in the track season, the fast marks and many personal records (PRs) are already coming in for a small, but committed contingent of CP Classic runners.  At Alamo Stadium in San Antonio over the Memorial Day weekend, the 3000 meter runners started the day with rainy conditions, but the skies cleared and the temperatures were downright hot for the rest of the events.  Afterall, what is a summer track meet in Texas without wacky or hot weather?

B-L-A-Z-I-N-G hot start for the beginning of the track season

Saturday, May 21, 2005 - With temperatures just below the 100 degree mark and well over that on the track surface itself, the weather was a certain factor for the first official track meet of the 2005 Track & Field Season.  Not having any days with temperatures over the mid-80s made it a hard adjustment for everyone, especially the distance runners, as temperatures were almost 15 degrees warmer than any other day we've run this year.  However, that could not stop some great CP Classic performances from gracing the track, even a few personal records (PRs) and club records were set.

After Ashley vs. Lunch Box II the score is now: Lunch Box 2 - Ashley 0

Thursday, May 19, 2005 - Notch another victory for Lunch Box in the 1 mile challenge series between the radio personality from 96.7 KISS FM's The Bobby Bones Show and the CP Classic's Ashley Isham.  Both ran faster than their first match race, this time Lunch Box ran the mile in 5:16.2 to Ashley's 5:16.5, which is a personal record for Ashley.  The race lived up to the expectations of the hundreds of spectators watching and the thousands listening to the Bobby Bones Show, as the whole show was broadcast live on-site from Vista Ridge High School in Cedar Park.  Ashley appreciated all of the support and cheers, even those rooting for Lunch Box.  Ashley was very thankful to numerous folks at Leander ISD, Vista Ride High School, and Artie Henry Middle School and most importantly, the generous and fun-natured people from the Bobby Bones Show.  Although Lunch Box was a 4:26-miler in high school, he is getting older and Ashley is getting faster, so if there are any rematches, they will certainly be faster and funner!

2004 News

Harriers bring home 5 medals and 2 All-Americans from AAU Nationals

Saturday, December 04, 2004 - A cold, soggy, and twisting course may have slowed down the times, but that could not stop the CP Classic Track Club from grabbing five medals, including three top-30 finishes, and two All-American designations at the AAU Youth Cross Country National Championships in Kingsport, Tennessee on Saturday, 12/04/2004.

The CP Classic traveled to eastern Tennessee for the meet, but even across the miles the course conditions were all too familiar as this cross country season has been a wet and muddy one.  It seemed only fitting to have a nationals course 'splash through the mud'.  Regardless of the course conditions, the CP Classic earned plenty of medals and a couple of All-American honors, led by
Ashley Isham, Alexandra Tully, and Carrie Burkett, who had the top placings for the team.  Earning All-American designations for placing in the top-25 were Isham and Tully Isham was 15th in the Youth Girls ('90-'91) 4000 meter race with a time of 15:30.45, Tully was 19th in the Midget Girls ('92-'93) 3000 meter race in 11:53.70, and Burkett was 30th in the Young Women's ('86-'87) 5000 meter race in 21:58.20.  Also medaling were Richard McEvoy-Kemp who was 74th in the Youth Boys ('90-'91) 4000 meter race in 14:45.09 and Nico Medrano who was 85th in the Intermediate Boys ('88-'89) 5000 meter race in 18:39.03.

Also competing for the CP Classic were Jesse Devlyn, 116th in the Bantam Boys ('94-'95) 3000 meter race in 13:55.68, Matt McKennon, 135th in the Midget Boys ('92-'93) 3000 meter race in 12:40.56, Alek Zayas-Dorchak, 156th in 15:48.23, and Brian Carter, 203rd in 17:24.46 in the Youth Boys 4000 meter race.

Doing the mud thang at the AAU South Texas District (formerly Association) Championships

Sunday, November 21, 2004 - The day started out with overcast skies and perfect running weather.  However, after Bantam Boys race the skies turned ugly with rain and lightning fierce enough to postpone and cause a semi-cancellation of the AAU South Texas District Championships on the fields behind Judson High School in Converse, Texas.  While the weather conditions initially caused a cancellation of the meet, numerous athletes still wanted to compete, so all Youth division and older athletes were then given the opportunity to race.

Before the weather turned nasty, the Bantam Boys 3,000 meter race was contested with Jesse Devlyn turning in a strong performance of sixth place in a time of 14:05.  After the torrential rain, lightning, and a 2-hour delay, the meet resumed and the saturated race course was alot more muddier and the puddles were much deeper.  Tough conditions, but these are tougher athletes.  The Youth Girls division was led by the 1-2 duo of Ashley Isham and Cecelia ForsheeIsham won the 4,000 meter race in a time of 15:28 and Forshee was close behind in 2nd with a time of  15:37.  In the Young Women's 5,000 meter race, Carrie Burkett took third with a time of 22:10.  Other CP Classic athletes qualifying for the AAU National Championships in Kingsport, Tennessee on 12/04/2004 were: Matthew McKennon in the Midget Boys division, Brian Carter, Richard McEvoy-Kemp, and Alek Zayas-Dorchak in the Youth Boys division.

'PRs R Us' at the Komen Race for the Cure 5K

Sunday, November 07, 2004 - Even though the Komen Race for the Cure 5K course is not the flattest around, it sure brought in PRs (personal records) for most of the CP Classic runners who were racing.  The course rolls slightly uphill on Congress Avenue for the first 1+ miles, then turns around at the Capitol and goes downhill back to Auditorium Shores.  Running among the crowd of over 18,000 registered runners and 2,082 finishers in the chip-timed divisions, the PRs came early and kept coming.  Ashley Isham started it off by winning the Female Overall title in a time of 18:56, followed by Cecelia Forshee in time of 19:51, who won the Female 14 & Under division and was the fourth female overall.  Not bad for a pair of 13 year olds!  Also joining in on the PR parade were Carrie Burkett (21:30) for second in the Female 15-19 division, Richard McEvoy-Kemp (19:59) for fourth in the Male 14 & Under, and Alek Zayas-Dorchak (21:33) for eighth in the Male 14 & Under division.

1 Mile Challenge:  Ashley vs.  96.7 KISS FM's Lunch Box.  What a race!

Thursday, October 28, 2004 - The CP Classic's Ashley Isham challenged radio personality Lunch Box from 96.7 KISS FM's 'The Bobby Bones Show' to a 1 mile challenge race, "the Main Event".  The race was run this morning at Vista Ridge High School in front of approximately 500 people and a much larger radio audience listening live to the complete race.  No one was disappointed, especially not Lunch Box or Ashley.

Ashley is a long-time listener to the show and knew that Lunch Box was a really good distance runner, a 4:26 miler in high school and is still very athletic.  This was not an easy challenge.  Ashley was on the radio during the week talking to Bobby and Jill and taking all kinds of smack from Lunch Box.  However, Lunch Box backed up his smack with a close victory in 5:23.1 just ahead of Ashley's 5:23.3.Lunch Box, well, he's Lunch Box (the secret is: he's a great guy away from the microphone).  Ashley showed real courage in front of a very large crowd, here just for this race, and she performed extremely well.  Ashley uses Steve Prefontaine's quote: "Somebody may beat me, but they are going to have to bleed to do it!".  Today, Lunch Box bled.  Ashley's 5:23.3 is a new mile personal record by four seconds.  Also, there are rumblings of an Ashley-Lunch Box re-match in the spring.  1 mile, 2 miles, you name it, she's there!

Massive kudos go out to Lisa Isham, the crew at the Bobby Bones Show (Bobby, Jill, Lunch Box, and producer Barry), the Artie Henry Middle School staff, Vista Ridge High School staff, KTBC Fox-7 Austin, The Hill Country News, and we definitely cannot forget those in attendance and listening on the radio.  This whole thing came about in just three days and was a great event and tons of fun for all.  What a great moment to remember.

Saturday, October 16, 2004 - At the Hays Invitational in Buda, the CP Classic harriers responded to the great weather by turning in excellent performances and dominating the junior high school divisions with a sea of gold singlets up front.  On the girls side, the CP Classic fielded an incomplete team of only three girls, but those three girls, Ashley Isham, Cecelia Forshee, and Alexandra Tully swept the first-three places in that order.  On the boys side, an excellent team display earned a second place finish, totaling 50 points.  Four boys earned medalists honors on the day with Richard McEvoy-Kemp (2nd) and Alek Zayas-Dorchak (8th) notching top-10 individual finishes.

Ashley Isham named TAAF State Female Athlete of the Year

Monday, September 27, 2004 - The Texas Amateur Athletic Federation has just named the CP Classic's Ashley Isham as TAAF Female Athlete of the Year for the state of Texas for 2004.  This honor is bestowed upon one athlete selected from TAAF's 14 different sports and over 210,000 individual participants in all age groups.  The selection in based upon current and past athletic achievements in sports organizations such as TAAF, AAU, USATF, etc., special attributes or circumstances, sportsmanship, and other criteria.  Isham's double victory and record setting performances at this year's TAAF Games of Texas in the Junior/Youth 1600 meters (5:27.09) and 3200 meters (11:48.88) played a big part in the selection process.

USATF Lions/Waterloo results are in

Saturday, September 18, 2004 - Getting a chance to compete in a rare off-season track meet at the USATF Lions/Waterloo Relays at McNeil High School is always fun and enjoyable.  Even more enjoyable are the performances, especially considering that the CP Classic athletes have been training on distance base for cross country and have not done any track-specific training.  The 3000 meter run was early in the day but in stifling and humid conditions, however the Boys 13-14 year old division had an exciting down-to-the-wire finish with Richard McEvoy-Kemp outkicking Richard Doelger 11:09.49 to 11:11.53.  McEvoy-Kemp came back later to claim the 1500 meters with a time of 4:54.44.  On the girls side of the 1500 and 3000 meters, Ashley Isham and Alexandra Tully topped the Girls 11-12 division in both races.  Isham ran times of 5:12.50 and 11:26.49 and Tully ran 5:34.63 and 12:16.82.  Jesse Devlyn excelled in the Boys 9-10 division, winning the 800 meters (in a time of 3:25.67) and the 1500 meters (6:30.00).  Lizzie Stevens tried her hand at the shorter distances and won the 11-12 year old girls division in the 100 meters (17.15) and 200 meters (35.94).

Texas State Invitational through the heat and humidity

Saturday, September 11, 2004 - The recent cool mornings broke today and the runners were greeted to unpleasantly humid conditions at the Texas State Invitational at Gary Job Corps in San Marcos.  However, the weather was not enough to hold back the CP Classic.  In the Jr. High Boys division, an excellent front pack performance brought in a medal for Richard McEvoy-Kemp (7th place in 8:44) across the 1.5 mile grass course.  Following McEvoy-Kemp were Alek Zayas-Dorchak (23rd, 9:31), Matthew McKennon (28th, 9:40), and Andrew Neisch (62nd, 10:37).  The lone female for the CP Classic was April Cumming (26th, 11:05) who ran a strong and incredibly consistent paced race.
