Easy ChachapoyasTour

This trip is for converting "couch potatoes" into adventurers without sacrificing luxury. You get to see the high points of the Department of Amazonas by bus, and have comfortable lodging, with some great day hikes to nearby ruins. This also includes mighty Kuelap and several zones of the better decorated small ruins, the museum of the mummies, and walks on some of the stretches of the Inca Highway System.

Departure Dates: first week June - October

Day 1: Flight from Lima to Chiclayo or direct flight to Chachapoyas. Overland bus to Chachapoyas with cross sections view of Peru's extreme terrain. Reception at 3 star colonial mansion.

Day 2: Continental breakfast and go by road to Levanto, where the Inca tried to move his capitol during the revolt against the Spanish. This was the most significant city in the zone at the time of the Inca invasion and also in the Spanish colonial era. The church here is 5 years older than Lima. Visit Yalape and the Inca military garrison which guards a major Inca road intersection to Cajamarca, along the 2000 mile Inca highway system which goes north to Colombia, south to Cusco and east to Cajamarca. Night at Tambo Levanto.

Day 3: Very early risers can make the optional 3 hour trek along perhaps the best Inca road, with fantastic views to Chachapoyas. Bus to Leymebamba, to stay at Laguna de los Condors Hotel.

Day 4: Visit the museum Mallqui where the 220 mummies are relocated. These were featured October 98 on the Discovery Channel documentary, found a day's hike away in the huge unknown zone. We take horses from here to Congona, reputed to be a Chachapoyan "palace". Dinner and overnight at Laguna de los Condors Hotel.

Day 5 - Bus to Yerbabuena and take horses (optional) up to the nearby Revash Mausoleum for a view of these brightly painted funeral chulpas on a cliff face. Afterwards we go by bus to the Choctomal Lodge, high in the cloud forest with a sweeping view of Kuelap.

Day 6: Continental breakfast and early visit to Kuelap (Cuelap). This is the most important Chachapoyan ruins and the largest structure in South America. Its 4 sets of walls range from one to two telephone poles tall and contain 400 stone buildings. This "Machu Picchu of the North" is much larger, older and more mysterious than the Machu Picchu in Cuzco. Return to Chachapoyas to our three star colonial mansion.

Day 7: Continental breakfast and return to Chiclayo to connect with flight or bus to Lima.

optional day: We will go to see the spectacular 8-foot high funeral sarcophagus of Karajia, on steep cliff. From there we will go to San Antonio and see more sarcophagus twice as high up as any building you have ever seen, on a sheer cliff and still hundreds of meters from the top. Overnight at Lamud.
