Musical Background

I went to the Eastman School of Music for my undergraduate study in flute, where I studied with Bonita Boyd. The work I did there with her had the greatest impact of all the places I have studied on the way I play and the way I think about music. I then went to Indiana University, where I received my Masters degree in flute. While there, I studied with Carol Wincenc and Peter Lloyd. I completed my Doctorate at the University of Michigan in 1992, where I studied with Keith Bryan. Throughout my academic career, I was very active in presenting solo recitals and concerts.

W
hile at the University of Michigan, I began to play the Baroque flute, which I studied with Michael Lynn for part of the time I was there. After graduating, I moved to Austin, where I became increasingly involved in playing the Baroque flute and in early music. I began to play with the Early Music Ensemble at the University of Texas and later to play with La Follia, a period-instrument chamber group.

In the summer of 1993, I attended the Baroque Academy at the Amherst Early Music Festival, where I was able to study Baroque flute with Jed Wentz. Since then, I have returned to study with him many summers (though the festival has moved and changed its name to the International Baroque Institute at Longy, in Boston). This has also had a great impact on my playing. I have also studied with Wilbert Hazelzet. I now play regularly with La Follia and the Austin Bach Quartet and occasionally with the U.T. Early Music Ensemble. I have also played with the Austin Handel Haydn Society (now the Austin Vocal Arts Ensemble) and have substituted in the Austin Symphony, as well as playing for church services, weddings, and other concerts.
