WALK Austin Walks Lamar! was our first Urban Walking Tour which took place Sat Mar. 22 from Noon to 3 PM. As a part of that event, we held a reading and signing of The Declaration of the Right to Walk and Roll. This document was created by Reuben Leslie Jr. because sometimes, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary to declare one's rights! Reuben supplies a preface which puts our declaration into historical perspective.

Who is WALK Austin?

One of several groups in North America, WALK Austin was founded in 1993 to organize citizen support for increased use and safety of pedestrian facilities. We want to make walking a safer and more desirable activity, in the hope that more Austinites will choose to walk. You can help! Join WALK Austin and add your voice, your ideas and your inspiration to our initiative.

Why does WALK Austin exist?

We all walk ... for fun, exercise, shopping, getting to work or school, or to reach our cars, bikes and public transportation. When we replace some of our car travel with walks, we improve our personal health and help maintain Austin's air quality. Our walks also familiarize us with our neighborhoods and neighbors. These informal activities foster a sense of community and improve public safety.

Besides our neighborhoods, we benefit from pleasant, safe, walkable places throughout the city and region such as the downtown, shopping streets, historic districts and urban trails that connect these areas. Walkable places bring people together outdoors to enjoy the quality of life for which Austin is known around the world.
