Mitchell A. Wilder Publication Awards
Virtually all museums, large and small, offer publications or printed
materials to their public. Ranging from monthly newsletters to books,
these publications and media programs reflect the museums's image. By
offering awards to recognize achievement in graphic design and media production,
TAM encourages museums to strive for quality in their public presentations.
The awards are named in honor of one of the early advocates of excellence
in museum publications, Mitchell A. Wilder (1913-1979), founding director
of the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth. Beginning with primarily late
nineteenth-century Western art, he helped build the collection of paintings
an sculpture to include a wide cross-section of American masterpieces.
Wilder was largely responsible for establishing the Museum's active publications
program, active exhibition calendar, and instituting the photography collection--one
of the country's largest. Throughout his career Wilder strove for excellence
and quality--especially in museum publications.
Wilder Award Judges
The judges have been selected for their understanding of an institution's
need to communicate successfully with a particular constituency. they
will use criteria for judging related to their professional experiences,
with the charge being to recognize excellence in publication design and
media production as well as effectiveness in conveying an institution's
program and/or mission through its publications. All entries are grouped
by design category and budgetary size. Each category is judged individually,
by budget size, beginning with Group I. Design is evaluated, not content.
Judging a printed piece is comparable to planning an exhibit--consistent,
clear vision; aesthetic unity; attention to detail; overall effectiveness
of design. Non-print media is evaluated on the basis of the effective
presentation of the institution.
How to Enter
Each piece must be accompanied by a completed entry form or facsimile
taped to the back cover or surface. Any entry submitted without this form
will not be accepted.
A copy of the entry form must be enclosed
with the entry fee ($12 per entry) and master registration form. The fee
is used to defray the cost of administering and judging the competition.
Checks should be made payable to Texas Association of Museums. (Be
sure to keep a copy of the entry form for your files.)
Budget size of the museum must be clearly indicated on the entry form
so that the entry can be grouped accordingly within each category (Group
I, II, III, IV, V, VI or VII)
Video entries must be 1/2" VHS format or DVD format.
All entries, except film, video, and slides are nonreturndable and will
become the property of TAM.
