The Audenarde Verdure

The beautiful "Audenarde Verdure" is named for "Audenarde", a famous quaint town in what was Flanders and which used to be a major center for the production of tapestries in Belgium.

The dark blue background is accented by soft shades of teal and green in the aristolochia leaves-also known as cabbage leaves. We can also see parrots, beautiful birds and other exotic animals of the new world playing in the foliage. The leopard has captured a game cock and the border is filled with rich festoons and garlands of fruits and flowers. A maiden playing a mandelin appears in the center of each of the four sides.

The original tapestry now in Vienna, Austria, was woven during the 16th century.
