Crest of Nagera
The Crest of Nagera was woven by Aerrnot
Van Loo for the Nagera Family, who had Basque-Spanish origins.
The original is presently on display at the Bruge Museum in Belgium.
Fleur de lys occupy the field of the shield signifying ties to
the French throne. The design of the field is a per pale reversed
with or and azure.
The top and sides are surrounded by images of the weavers sign
for Tournai, a famous Flemish town. Ribbon-like strips form leaves
that are the mantle surrounding the barred visor helmet and shield.
The border has it's vases filled with ascending plant motif-festoons
of flowers, fruits, trophies, shields, etc. The busts of the four
philosophers (Socrates, Plato, Cato, and Seneca) appear in the
corners of the tapestry. These same figures also appear in much
earlier dated Charlemagne period tapestries.
