FrameMaker Practice & Quick-Refs: Master Pages
|
See the previous instructions on how to go about this assignment.
To get some practice with FrameMaker master pages, do the following:
- Explain how to switch between master pages and body pages.
- Explain how to change the shape and location of the main text frame.
- Explain how to create a new master page to be used especially for page one of a new document (no page number, shorter text frame that starts lower on the page).
- Explain how to apply a custom master page to an existing document (hint: make sure you've got 3 pages of left and right out there already).
- Explain how to import master pages into an existing, open document.
- Put all of these explanations into a document that has the following characteristics:
- Double-sided pagination (see the Pagination menu)
Note: For alternating pagination, you must use the Right and Left master pages that FrameMaker generates when you specify Double-sided in Pagination menu. FrameMaker will not automatically alternate right and left master pages with customized names like my_Right and my_Left and other such.
- Forced even page count
- Master pages with the following specifications:
| Left |
Body text frame: 5.0 x 9.0 inches (width x height); 1.0 x 1.0 inches (top x left) |
| Right |
Body text frame: 5.0 x 9.0 inches (width x height); 1.0 x 2.5 inches (top x left) |
| Page one |
Chapter title frame: 6.5 x 0.5 inches (width x height); 2.0 x 1.0 inches (top x left)
Body text frame: 5.0 x 7.0 inches (width x height); 3.0 x 2.5 inches (top x left) |
- Page-one master page applied to the first page of the document
Note: FrameMaker has problems if you have an empty document with only two page (Left and Right) and one of which you change to Page one. Make sure your file has at least 3 pages of text before you apply Page one.
- Name this document with your first name and initial and _masterpages1.fm (for example, davidm_masterpages1.fm) and send it by e-mail attachment to your instructor.
For extra, optional practice, create a template and master pages for a two-column index:
- Create a FrameMaker file with the following master pages:
| Left |
Left-column text frame: 2.9 x 9.0 inches (width x height); 1.0 x 1.0 inches (top x left)
Right-column text frame: 2.9 x 9.0 inches (width x height); 1.0 x 4.4 inches (top x left)
Footer frame: 6.3 x 0.14 inches (width x height); 10.4 x 1.0 inches (top x left) with page number aligned left |
| Right |
Left-column text frame: 2.9 x 9.0 inches (width x height); 1.0 x 1.2 inches (top x left)
Right-column text frame: 2.9 x 9.0 inches (width x height); 1.0 x 4.6 inches (top x left)
Footer frame: 6.3 x 0.14 inches (width x height); 10.4 x 1.2 inches (top x left) with page number aligned right |
These dimensions cause the left and right pages to mirror each other with extra space on the inside.
- Open mp_index.mif, and copy (not import) the text directly out of the MIF file into the file whose master pages you've just created.
Note: Do not File > Import the text from the MIF file because the master pages from the MIF file will destroy the master pages you've just created.
-
Name this document with your first name and initial and _masterpages2.fm (for example, davidm_masterpages2.fm) and send it by e-mail attachment to your instructor.
