As you can see, Lake Travis is bordered by heavily forested
hills, populated by Live Oak, Post Oak, Elm, Redbud and Western Juniper
(locally known as ``Cedar'' - despised for its potent allergenic
properties and worshiped for its beautiful wood-grain and aromatic smoke).
The lake is formed by Mansfield Dam on the
Texas Colorado river, and
winds 67 miles through the edge of the Edwards Plateau (an area known as the
Texas ``hill country''.) Lake Travis is a flood-control resevoir in the chain
of the Highland Lakes west of Austin. As such, its water level fluctuates in
an unpredictable and occasionally spectacular manner. (I'll try to post a
print of a great flood picture I have.)

This is the cove where I live (hidden in the trees to the right.)
In dry years, this is a beautiful hill country stream winding through the
stumps of the former cypress groves which grew here until the dam was
constructed in the 30's. The Works Progress Administration built a lot
of dams in its time. Sigh...
