While in the central district, we’ll tour the magnificent Texas State Capitol, recently restored to its original glory, along with its spacious landscaped grounds, numerous exhibits, and stately monuments. The Drag (Guadalupe Street) draws us to University of Texas museums, plazas, and greenery along Waller Creek to the LBJ Library. Here too are the Performing Arts Center, Memorial Stadium, and the Center for American History, where we catch our first glimpse of the majestic Hill Country.
Before you know it, we’re atop one of those hills, Mount Bonnell in West Austin. From its 105-step summit, you behold a grand bend in the Colorado River and the rolling prairies to the East—a whole geography lesson in one sweeping panorama. If you want, we can head westward into that rugged country and take a turn around jewel-like Lake Travis and its wineries, parks, and vistas.
