To all good citizens of Austin music culture,

Why would any self-respecting radio station, non-commercial or otherwise, cancel an incredible free-form radio shift by one of the most genuinely inventive musical figures in town? Jeff "Stinkpot" Johnston's overnight show on KUT is legendary in local music circles for late-night inspiration and he has played more Austin music on stage and on air than most other "Just Segway" veteran jocks. I hope he can sub for Garrison Keillor sometime, I am so sick of that freak.

The advance MP3 single from the Superego All-Star's 4th album "low overhead" is now available online. Look for the romantic ballad "The Cost of a Dream Destroyed" on the Superego MP3 site this week, recorded and mixed at the Bubble by Chris Frenchy Smith with side egoists Paul Etheredge, Joey Shuffield and Tony Scalzo. Limited supplies of the new 14 song disc will hit Waterloo, Jupiter, and Texas Music Roundup in March.

Members of the Superego and Alterego family are eligible for various Chronicle Music Awards including best cover band, best bassist, and best self-promoter, so please vote your conscience online at the Chronicle site. Polls close next weekend.

Sunday, February 17:  Dismukes guest host Free For All with TBA
Thursday, March 7:   Superego CD Release with Stingers at Continental
Sunday, March 17:  Willie Nelson Tribute at Hole in the Wall with All-Star local line up.   $10 cover.
May 2002 - Superego All-Stars "Graduation Roadtrip" Summer Tour coming to a town near you.

Dad,

I used my ailing truck to deliver chronicles today and it ran fairly well.  It only runs noticably bad when going over 40 mph or up a big hill. It worked fine for my route. It even got up to 60 on couple of stretches without too much protest.  The mechanic told me it was not unsafe to drive as is, running on five cylinders. I am planning to look into putting a new or rebuilt engine in it eventually. I was told you can get replacement engines at pep boys and large auto part distributors in the range of $1000, and then have it put in somewhere, which might be a good investment, since i like the truck so much and got such a good deal on it.

I got another inquiry call for a wedding in march today, our referrals are really picking up steam. the more gigs we play, the more satisfied customers we make. And I got a letter from a motion picture special payments agency today notifying me i will be receiving an annual residual check this year for Miss Congeniality, amount unspecified. Mailbox money is a good thing.

New superego album is coming along, i am getting real excited about it, it's the best one yet, should be done in a few weeks.

i am following the john walker case closely, i get the NY Times for free online.

Dear Dave, Brent, and Leslie,

I would like to discuss the Sunday night SXSW music festival showcase at the Hole in the Wall with you guys at your earliest convenience. As you are aware, there were some last-minute production complications last year because of my indecisiveness on certain issues, and I want to make sure that any such hassles be avoided this year. I figure if we can have a meeting to knock out the production details well in advance, it will be much less stressful than waiting until the week of the conference.

I have a great idea for another successful production. Last year's "Last Temptation of Superego" was a record-breaking huge success and I am constantly getting rapturous comments on it from satisfied customers. As part of my graduate studies program in human services at St. Ed's, I have been working with SIMS Foundation to facilitate a membership-based fundraising program, and I would like to tie in this year's event with SIMS as well as with the Hole in the Wall Preservation fund. This year I would like to produce an All-Star Austin tribute to Willie Nelson. Featured artists will include members of damnations, gourds, fastball, li'l cap'n travis, jane bond, ted roddy, prescott curlywolf, young heart attack, golden arm trio, bob schneider and more, with many musical highlights such as earl poole ball and alice spencer performing "crazy" and fastball doing "on the road again."

I am thinking we can have two shows this year, an early one at 7 for SIMS Foundation contributing members, and a 11 pm show for SXSW wristband and badge holders, with a portion of box office proceeds going to the Hole in the Wall preservation fund. I would like permission to coordinate sound and lights production with contractors and resources from the Free For All and SIMS family. Let's meet with Debbie, address all the concerns and interests of the club, the festival and the bands and make this year go smooth. Please let me know when would be a good time to discuss this in person.

thanks and good luck with everything,

dude, i got to party with ray. my pal from fastball sat in with him at his awesome storyteller's show at La Zona. I met them at a secret location after the show. We couldn't get a cab because of a big rain storm so we all rode in my pickup to a couple of other bars. I told him I like the song "rock and roll fantasy," and he said "you should with a truck like this..." He was hilarious and very gracious. He kept calling me "james carville." He made his crew ride in the back of my pickup and told us "you can't treat them too well or they take you for granted." After we sat in with the band at Ego's he said very dryly, "I had no idea you had so much soul." I ended up singing "don't cry for me argentina" with mr. davies at a korean karaoke bar. I forgot to ask him if he's heard of you guys or tahiti 80's song about him.

Buck, I am informed that Slipknot has a side project called Superego with an upcoming release. I have been kind of burned out on the name and its misinterpreted irony for a while now anyway, so I am thinking we might could get a buyout from these guys ala Aimee Mann. Can you help out for a modest fee? thanks,

Dad,

Amazing news.  I was nominated for induction into the texas music hall of fame in the chronicle awards ballot this week. It is a complete surprise and a very high honor.  I don't expect to win this year and sincerely believe that there are several on the list much more deserving, but the nomination alone is mind blowing.  I don't know how it works, but maybe I will remain on the ballot for a few years if I don't get in this time.  You can check out the list of inductees and nominees online at and see the ballot on page 40. They also mentioned the "last tempation of superego" show as one of the ten best live events of 2001.

how is everyone?   I am busy and enjoying it.  Miles and I recorded a superego song last night in a great studio out north off 183 and pond springs, then went to continental for stingers.  I am back there to tonight for earthpig.   I took defensive driving today.  have a great weekend.

Nothing major (pun intended). I was just admiring the sublimity of this solo and looked at your notes on the beatles site to see if you had any comments, and i thought it was kind of odd that your analysis kind of skips it. The note choices are very tasty and "inside the changes." When the chord is I, he plays major thirds and sevenths, but when it moves to I7 he glides very smoothly into scales with Bb and Eb, it also mimics the descending chromatic motif from the bridge a couple times, but stays very soulful and bluesy. I'll check out the lead guitar websites for some more dialogue on this. I really enjoy your writing. My friend just had a kid this morning and named him Harrison.

take care,

Paul,  Thanks for your email.  Yes, it's regular lead not a slide; it's a mistake of mine frequently pointed out to me; I ought to correct it. I'm not sure what you're asking me about regarding major/minor mode shifts; please clarify.

Hey Alan,

I really enjoy your notes on the beatles. It has given me a new  appreciation of some of my favorite songs. In honor of George, I sat  down and figured out a couple of my favorite guitar solos. I was surprised that your treatment of 'Something" did not give more analysis  of this exemplary instrumental passage. I would like to hear your thoughts on how smoothly he switches modes from the major 7th to the flat 7 as the chord changes progress. Learning it made me realize how sophisticated and deceptively simple it sounds. Kind of like George himself. He was never one to be too  obvious about his true depth.  One more thing, i am fairly certain it's a regular lead and not a slide solo. take care and keep up the good work,

Dear Bill,

I have received confirmation that you are in receipt of the itemized invoice for repairs to our band equipment.  Our agent Freddy Warner informs me that you are of the opinion that we are being opportunistic, simply trying to take advantage of this unfortunate situation for financial gain. I need to let you know that this could not be further from the truth and I am insulted and angered by the implication.

We showed up and did our jobs as professionals at this event. No thanks to the technical provisions, we met the requirements of our contract in spite of this setback and were given high praise by the bride and her family.  A less experienced group might not have been as resourceful as we were, and the whole event could have been a disaster.  As you are aware, no music equals no party.  We brought an extra amplifier, and when we bypassed your circuit board and plugged our remaining functioning equipment directly into the wall outlets, everything proceeded as planned with minimal delay.

In crude language, we covered your behind. We expect you to return the favor and help us cover our expenses. There is no way you can accuse us of trying to soak the club when the cause of "overvoltage" is listed in black and white on every repair receipt. We have never had a problem with our equipment before or since, and we perform regularly.  Your faulty electrical current seriously damaged the tools of our livelihood.

We are not inexperienced amateurs, and we are not opportunistic scoundrels. We just want to be treated fairly. We will continue to pursue this to the highest authority in your company.  Please reconsider your position on this, and feel free to contact me if you have any thoughts or questions on this matter.

Happy holidays to you and yours

Pati,

Peggy from South By Southwest contacted me to inquire about torch singers for a New Years party. I would like to enthusiastically recommend Miss Jane Bond and any members of her band. She has a couple of sets worth of sultry prohibition era speakeasy type blues and jazz, as well as some great originals. They are very professional, sharp dressers and play at a tasteful volume, and they have a nice PA system. The material is great for dancing or dining. She is available for the new years date, and you can contact her on Mondays at the Parlor. They have a great CD you can check out, and they also have regular club dates in town. Look up her website at steppin stone records.

best of luck with your party and happy new year,

Just go for it.  Keeping professional objectivity is something very important to develop and practice.  People like Clinton speechwriter James Carville are intelligent enough to do their job and serve their employers loyally without letting it interfere with thier personal lives. He married George Bush's campaign manager. It will only help your journalism. You need life experience, even if it is sometimes unpleasant or stressful. Politics is only poisonous when swallowed. Use it as fuel for your creativity but don't expect nourishment.

Re:  Parking Violation #3553

Your honor,

I am writing this letter to respectfully ask you to dismiss this parking fine. I sincerely apologize for this violation and I am hoping you will take into account the circumstances and consider the situation from my perspective. I am a graduate student at St. Edward's in the Human Services program and also a working local musician. In order to make ends meet I have a new part-time job delivering a weekly newspaper. On Thursday afternoon, I pulled up to Barnes and Noble bookstore in the Westlake Village shopping center, and there were no spaces available in front of the store. Since I had four large 10 pound bundles of papers to deliver and I am on a tight schedule, I made the mistake of pulling up in front of a red curb. There was no sign or hydrant.  I put on my flashers and went inside for no more than 3 minutes, just long enough to drop the bundles by the magazine rack and the cashier counter and rush out.  I don't understand how the officer could even write the ticket that fast unless they saw me unloading, in which case I wish they could have just told me to move the truck instead of writing me a ticket. This fine takes a large chunk out of the money I made on that route. I am just trying to make a living, learning my route, and I really can't afford this expense. I am willing to do a community service project or pay a reduced fine, but I just can't pay this ticket right now. I realize I made an error in judgment. I am very distressed over this and angry with myself for being impatient and lazy and not using the rear loading zone.  I am a very cautious and courteous driver and always obey the rules of the road on my route.  It was a dumb mistake and I promise to never do it again, if you could please give me this one reprieve.

Sincerely,

Paul Minor

Hi Paul, I listened to the MP3 and really like it. Very 60s, sort of Dusty Springfield, feel good melody. I love the vocals in the second verse, reminds me a little of Style Council, and the horns, I love the horns!

Happy song, melancholy lyrics, very special.

Can't wait to hear more.
