chris,

I have resigned my position as booking agent at texas music saloon. as a representative of the musician community, my conscience would not let me continue to associate my name with another business seeking to profit from austin music without making any significant investment in it.

Basically, it's another bar in an unusual location that is saying, "Well the cigars didn't work, and the brewpub failed, let's put a band out there on the patio and see if anyone shows up."

I could have stayed on and continued drawing a paycheck, but as a musician, i couldn't bear the stress of continually apologizing to the bands for the lack of basic accommodations there. it's a nice building, but they have not invested a dime into making the place suitable for shows. they really need to create an enclosed space with a decent size stage and a real p.a. system if they want to be a legitimate live music showcase.

these doubts were troubling me all along, but when some unfortunate business went down between the club and some of the most respected bands in town, i knew it was time to move on.

and so, once again i am seeking a position with a respected company that is committed to making local music a priority.

thanks for asking,

paul

Hi, Paul. Sorry to hear that you quit the Saloon, but I don't really blame ya.

I wanted to let you know that, even though the editor told me it wouldn't be in the issue, the new Amplifier does indeed have my Superego review in it. It's got the Flaming Lips on the cover and should be in stores, well, I'm not sure when exactly. I got my writers copy the other day, so I'd guess a week or too before it's in Tower or Book People. Check it out if you get a chance.

If there is no longer a viable live music market in Austin for local bands why would it be any different for videos of those bands? Is it because everyone is getting wired and does not want to go to the effort going to clubs? If so, would the kind of thing you envision have the potential for renewing that part of the music scene? Or, are we becoming a virtual society as reflected by the popularity of VH 1 and MTV? Seems like it is a rapidly changing landscape for the whole culture. I sure wouldn't want to have a small local bookstore at this time selling $7.00 paper backs.

"andy,

miles and i jammed with some hip-hop djs at the salt for slugs party last night. i did some new ego stuff and he did one of his new tunes and a cure song. it was silly, but fun. the fastball guys are all in town until the 19th and i bet they would be glad to do an interview on news 8.

i taped your show and watched it just now when i got back from an argyles gig in dallas. i thought it was real cool. the camera usually adds weight but you looked trim and young in your tie. the piece was fairly well produced and i know they will only get better.

things to work on: the background sound was a little noisy when clifford was talking, and your narration at the beginning was kind of rushed. i also thought one of your questions was a little long. it was a very informative piece, but it almost seemed like you talked more than your subject. more me! more me!

but overall great job. is there anything we could do to help keep clifford out of jail or a shorter sentence? it's such a shame.

bring the crew down to the free for all anytime, i will tell you about the MP3 download business i am working on. i will be soon be recording live songs at the hole for sale on the net through a partnership with a texas music website.

seeya at the ballpark.

drake,

how was stubb's? i was playing cover tunes in the dallas aquarium, and bummed i missed it. i know you tore it up.

did you have fun at the salt for slugs deal thursday? i had a blast on stage with the djs in spite of my ill-prepared solo material. you should try it sometime. just make sure they have good beats loaded up at the appropriate b.p.m.

i had a gig at the UT alumni center tonight 7-11 and afterward was able to just catch sanchez and patty griffin as a duo at the waterloo brew pub/kgsr sold out free concert deal. it was heartwrenching. patty's set moved me like no singer songwriter since lucinda or townes.

i am thinking about how to play as a soloist or duo for a west coast tour. i have a showcase in LA booked in Feb.

listening to danko tribute on KUT now. life is a carnival...it makes no difference. now they are rolling some stuff that doug sahm played lead guitar on with danko solo and it's killing me. i bet it was in san antonio or san fran or some other santo in the 70s.

kevin just informed me he has a new electronic drum sampler rig he is going to start utilizing at the free for all and i am brainstorming about how to get some good keyboard and percussion sounds loaded on his triggers. we will probably go into the digital studio and outfit his sampler with the sounds of "superego 2000."

i should fly him out to the showcase with me.

i should also tell you, i am working for a MP3 company called "txmp3.com" you should check out the website, and we can discuss getting your songs on there. they license masters at a real fair rate for downloads. how does 60 cents on a 1.50 download sound? near cd quality, i guess... the charge card service provider gets 39 cents, i get a nickel $ dime fee. would you let me use the free for all 2 master? would you sign a one-sheet agreement or initial an online form? would you allow me to record a show live at the hole or another club and upload a song from that?

just curious.

oh yeah, this is a personal invitation to the party on monday at lucky lounge. at 10:30 sharp, it's a legit superego gig, with 5 piece showband. davi'd is at 8:30 i believe.

let's jam asap aldo. you rock dude.

chepo,

thanks for the compilation cd. it is awesome. let's figure out how to make about a dozen more real quick and i will advertise it. i will have it remastered and use my credit at crystal clear. we'll color copy the master print for the cover. maybe we just take the zip disc to brad.

check out Listen.Com and thanks for telling me the best place to host your MP3s is your own server. could you help me FTP a couple more files to my website? maybe i could just give you the password.

i am looking forward to the gomez reunion sunday. thanks again chepo.

merry christmas and a sci-fi 2000
