I collided with Kacy Crowley guitarist Patrick Matera at second base last Thursday and bruised a rib, crippling me all weekend, but just like Austin music, i am bouncing back. It's a truly exciting time in the scene, with great new original bands making more new fans and bigger box-office revenues than ever before. There's new money in town, the disposable income dot.com gold rush has finally struck the wealthy vein of undiscovered talent in the music mine, and for every trendy new band banking heavily on the burgeoning downtown weekend bonanza, there's hundreds more on the verge. It's a lonely land at the top, but the bands at the bottom of the pyramid should be reaping the rewards as they start to trickle down very soon. After a long day chasing the mouse, take a break and check out the Chronicle club listings online or preview a show on BIGJAM.com, then step out and see the Stingers, the Onlys, El Orbits, Grand Champeen, Quick Drawl, Beaver Nelson, Jon Dee Graham, Goudie, Dewato, Darin Murphy, D-Rez or any young band fresh from the garage in any of the cool new clubs in town and you'll be a much happier and hipper member of the high-tech workforce.
In a frenzy of foolhardy artistic generosity, free Superego MP3s are
showing up on a bunch of new music websites, including MP3.COM
, SPINRECORDS.COM, and our
Free For All showcases are now archived for posterity on CLUBCASTLIVE.COM.
Lick here for new scrapbook clippings from the latest music rags.
And check out the Superego listing on the SXSW
webpage, and the listings for the Argyles and Superego in the Chronicle
Musician's Register.
Diana Zuniga, sister of Fastball's Miles Zuniga and owner of the property formerly known as the Electric Lounge (where Jeff Buckley, Morphine, ? and the Mysterians, Fastball, Spoon, & The Muffs all once held court) is reported to be working with Free For All host Paul Minor to re-open the legendary space temporarily as an official South by Southwest showcase venue. The "Gallery Lombardi Lounge," named for the adjoining art gallery, will host a variety of local and national showcase bands, daytime events and after-hours parties during this year's festival, serving catered beer and wine to the 21 & over crowd.
Meanwhile the Hole in the Wall's Rock & Roll Free For All will continue the SXSW tradition of Sunday night all-star tributes this year, presenting "HOOT NIGHT FEVER," the songs of the BEE-GEES and other Disco classics performed by scheduled acts Johnny Goudie, Spoon's Britt Daniel, the Wannabes, Lil' Cap'n Travis, Departure Lounge, El Orbit's David Beebe, Grand Champeen, American People, Superego, Trish & Darin, Pocket Fish'rmen, Golden Arm Trio, The Argyles and other "surprise" guests.

Hello Shortstop.
The reason for the immediacy of this email is to see about the free-for-alls
pre-SXSW. Robyn's guitarist (who I'm staying with) us bringing his band,
Departure Lounge, over for the conference. What do you have planned for
the free-for-all the Sunday prior? They'd be really cool and classy to
have play. They're in the midst of booking some dates around that time,
so I figured I'd check in with you before they commited to something else..
Could you email TIm back at this address and/or me at my e-mail? I was
also thinking we could put together some sort of pop show with you guys,
Cotton Mather, Spoon, Darin and Departure Lounge. Perhaps too soon to set
up for the week after/prior? Some place sparkly like the Ritz? With sparkly
fliers to attract the little girlies?
I don't have your number, so email that, too, pretty please.
THanks. Kisses.
Mindy
ps. I told Robyn about the free-for-all and he said he should come down
next time............cool.

Hello there,
Vale
Subject: Re: booking
vale,
thanks for contacting me. the gig sounds like fun. i have two bands,
superego plays mostly original music and the argyles plays covers.
superego can do the gig for $1,000, argyles go for $2,500. both bands
carry full p.a. systems. both would need a couple of rooms and a meal.
do you have shows on fridays also? argyles are booked long in advance
on most saturdays in the coming year, but if you had us on a friday we
could come down to $2,000.
we just finished editing a new demo video if you would like to see a
copy.
hope that helps.

Dear SIMS,
I appreciate your willingness to write a letter of recommendation for
my admittance to St. Edward's Graduate Program. I hope to enroll for the
Summer 2000 semester, and the application deadline is March 15th. I plan
to earn a Masters in Human Services and start a career as an independent
consultant specializing in conflict resolution while remaining active in
the Austin music community.
I will send you the text of my personal essays
in a separate message.
Thank you again, PW. SIMS has been in inspiration to me and this means
a great deal. I am especially excited about the internship arrangement
we discussed which is right in line with my plans to incorporate my interests
in music and human services.

Hey Paul,
I need some help with some tapes and I thought maybe you could help
me. I want to put out a live Skunks CD and I need to put some 1/4 tapes
on digital, maybe some other stuff too. That's basically where I need to
start.
So gimme a call. I like your new CD. I liked the last one, too.
Cheers,

Back at you.

Please remove me from your e-mail list. It's getting annoying.
Subject: Re: E-mail list
Sorry Mac,
I will put you in the folder with the folks who don't need to get every
mailout. i don't usually send out so much junk, but I guess I've been on
a roll. I am in the Argyles with Dana Myzer. I did catch your show at the
Saxon with Dana and Gurf and it was awesome. Thanks for the invite.
Sorry to be a pain in the arse.
Cheers,
Paul
Subject: wedding
Hey Paul,
Just thought I'd drop you a line to say thanks for all the cover suggestions.
The wedding gig was a smash success, we fooled everyone into thinking we
were a wedding band and folks danced all night. Every one of your suggestions
was right on the money. Brick House, Proud Mary, Mustang Sally etc. All
huge hits. We even met this guy who was an attorney for Fender (really)
that kept telling us he wanted to hook us up with all kinds of gear. Jake
and I played our Strat and Tele all night to kiss ass. He loved it. Unfortunately
he has since sobered up and won't return my phone calls. The club gigs
we played went real well also, particularly the Hollywood one. I guess
you were out in California around the same time. How'd that go?
Men From Nantucket are ready to make another Free-For-All appearance
whenever you're ready to have us. I like the new format.
Good luck with SXSW. When's your showcase? I'll try to get some folks
out to impress all the big stogie-chomping label bigwigs. Good luck with
everything. Later.
Jeff

I'm returning from London tomorrow. Very pleasant indeed. Liam Gallagher
showed up at the Cotton Mather gig. I had drinks with some dudes from the
Lightening Seeds and Spiritualized, and, most intriguingly, Mr. Hitchcock
himself. Not as glamorous as one might hope, but then I wasn't important
enough to get tickets to the NME awards show.

We are in the process of opening up a new night club in Uvalde, Texas
called the Lone Star Saloon and in the process of looking up bands on the
internet, we ran across your group's info. Would you please let us know
what it would cost to get you guys down here to Uvalde? The booking would
be for a Saturday night from 9:30pm to 1:30 am. The stage size would be
about 12 X 20, there is no house system, and if all goes well, we'll get
you in here throughout the entire year. Hope to hear from you as soon as
possible, we'll have our Grand Opening April 1st (No it's not an April
Fool's Joke either). Thanks.

superego could play two 45 minute original sets and maybe an hour's
worth of covers. the argyles specialize in classics and oldies and regularly
play four-hour shows at weddings and corporate parties throughout the state.
you can see the argyles setlist at:

This latest album is another masterpiece you should be proud to have
under your belt. I love it. The back-up vocals on the 1st song is wonderful,
and everthing else is so great. Including the "Tighten Up" was genious!
It is so extremely wonderful Paul. Thank you for sharing your music with
me. I appreciate it more than you'll ever know. Can't wait to see you live
in the coming months,
love,
Jaunita
