Superego Update 6-3-97

Pre-millenial hysteria-induced phenomena are popping up like lesions on a leper all over this big blue world. The polar ice cap is melting like a snowcone on the sidewalk and flooding half the country, tornadoes are inflicting their rage on innocent trailer homes, subdivisions and major supermodel metropolises alike. The computers are all going to crash and keep our money as soon as the ball drops in times square and we will be left to pick up the pieces of the new century.

Mother Earth is ridding herself of a tenacious parasite. We all believe we are immortal as individuals, that is what gives us the will to get up in the morning and feed the plants, but do you honestly believe mankind is immortal? In the same flick of fate that combined the elements to create our species, our species could also disappear. Some say it already is happening around us insidiously every day, that through the process of technological de-evolution, we are eliminating ourselves with machines that do our jobs much more efficiently, but not necessarily better. Ever get voice mail? Soon the machines will be thinking for us.

Superego has a busy month of preparations for the coming apocalypse. Join together with the band.

Art is immortal.

Due to a widely misread 'recommended' column a few weeks back, Paul Minor wishes to clarify that rumors of his demise as free for all host have been slightly exaggerated. Travis Higdon took over the reins only for one special Peekaboo Records Showcase while Superego took a much-deserved vacation.

Gimme a break. I am a musician, not Cal Ripken.

As the free for all approaches year three, Minor and cohorts are planning several intriguing events at the Hole, including the Flambeaux Space Jam in June, and the Week Long Free For All Music Festival in September, as well as writing and recording a new set of Superego songs with the band, which now includes saxaphonist Allyson Lipkin from Deep Sombreros, and Jon Sanchez adding farfisa organ to the new mix.

. By the way, Jennifer is planning some kind of new "Honky Tonk Hoedown" at the hole on mondays so stay tuned. The new Spoon video for their song Operation in Progress from free for all vol. 2 is in rotation on the Austin Music Network, and viewable online (with free software) at www.internetv.com . Superego's video for "No Way to Know" is also featured there and remains on the mtv.com site. Nickel $ Dime Productions has also finalized deals with Pocket FishRmen and Deep Sombreros to produce upcoming videos.

The Blow Pop Wars: Electric Lounge vs. Nasty's

Well, Austin has officially discovered hip-hop, and it's about time.

I started checking out the deal at Nasty's on Monday nights after a friend invited me to her birthday party there last year. The old school hip-hop was pumping, the dance floor was full but not too crowded, and the drink specials were affordable. But what I was most impressed with was the scene, man. The place was full of stylish young dancers out to get down and grind.

Nasty's is the neighborhood bar for the 34th street and Guadalupe area, and the clientele normally reflects a mix of students and typical barstool philosophers. The beer garden is refreshing after a rigorous dance session and the folks who work there are genuinely friendly.

But in the past few months, the scene has become suffocating. It doesn't take a scientist to figure out that if you have to wait fifteen minutes to get a beer in a line a half-dozen deep with sweaty frat guys and off-duty strippers, the line to the bathroom is going to be agony.

So now the blow pop promoters have started a new blow pop night at the electric lounge, with a new d.j. team featuring dj snoopi, while the owner of nasty's continues the monday night tradition with the original team of mel and snotty.

The superior party? Electric Lounge, hands down. The main reason is DJ Snoopi, whose grooves are more imaginative, his transitions smoother, and his reportoire much more diverse. The dance floor at the E. Lounge leaves room for both the casual swayer and the serious break dancers, and the crowd is much more integrated.

This past Monday's mixture of ultra-alternative live music and hip-hop (the result of a leftover roadshow booking) was encouraging to those who like it both ways, but clearly many were disappointed to have to wait for the bands to finish so the jams could start.

But if more aggressive jams and closer quarters are your preference, Nasty's is still packed to the gills every Monday. After years of conspicuous absence, it looks as though Austin may be willing to support two simultaneous weekly hip hop throwdowns.

Can't we all just get along?

The Correspondence File:

Dear Gary and Elizabeth,

I represent a band called the Argyles. We have been playing classic rock, soul, and pop standards at elegant functions in Texas since 1980.

We are always looking for new and unusual venues to promote our name, and we thought it would be fun to try a gig at Anchovies.

Although we have been received favorably at many public appearances at places like Stubb's, Steamboat, Sam Hill, and Top of the Marc, private parties are our bread and butter. We are booked every weekend through the end of the year at society parties throughout the state that pay from 2 to 3 thousand a show. However, we are prepared to provide three sets of lively party music and a top notch sound and light system at Anchovies at a drastically discounted local weeknight rate.

You can see our setlist and pictures of the five of us in our formal wear on our website:

www.eyesoftime.com/superego/arglist.html

Please let me know if you are interested. Everyone in the band is enthusiastic

sincerely,

Ron Impala

Dear Paul,

I guess that I didn't realize how exclusive the RnR FFA had become. I have only been in Austin since last July and although I've only attended Sunday's at the Hole in the Wall a few times, for some reason I got the impression that the night was an opportunity for both experienced and fledgling bands. I even remember a band who said (onstage) that you had booked them through Email messages and hadn't even heard their music at all. And most of the time I guess I just got the impression that the bands were fairly new or still getting their shit together. Maybe I just came on a bad night(s) or something.

At any rate, (my lame band) has played the illustrious Blue Flamingo two times and that'd be about it. Our drummer is now playing with Wookie in addition to our band. To be frank, we're getting pretty discouraged with the music scene (it doesn't help being in your mid-twenties.) Not that our shows at the Blue Flamingo weren't fun, but you know... A band without any shows is soon a group of guys who used to play some music together and then the songs, good or bad, are lost forever.

But so it goes. If you have any suggestions about getting shows here in town and the time to type them out, I would appreciate it. And if there is an open slot on any night that you know of let me know. I gave you a tape that I assumed you listened to and I would like to think (like every other band in Austin) that our music is somewhat original. So keep me posted. As far as testimonials from other clubs, this begs the age-old question; "How does one get experience if no one will hire a person (band) without experience?"

So take care and let me know. I've been in a million bands so if I don't hear from you it won't break my heart.

sincerely,

(Mr. Pitiful)
