Gibbons Burke's Home Page
I am Editor and Executive Producer for MarketHistory.com, a web site that provides trading and investment ideas for stocks, commodities, foreign exchange, energy, and credit markets. When I first posted this home page in 1995 I was in the employ of MarketHistory.com's parent company, Logical Information Machines in charge of the Financial Data department. LIM produces software that makes it easy to test empirically any market ideas using an extensive database of financial market historical data.I have also published feature articles on trading and technology in issues of Active Trader Magazine since its inception in April 2000.
At one time I was an Associate Editor and columnist with Futures Magazine. While there I created a monthly column called "The Computerized Trader" which I wrote for six years. Several spreadsheets built to illustrate concepts discussed in the column are available here.
I first wrote about the Internet in a feature article in Future April 1994 issue. Ongoing coverage of the online world resulted in WAHOO! - a collection of sites of interest to traders in stocks, commodities, futures and options, which has been neglected of late.
Here are some web pages I have compiled for some of my favorite writers:
Patrick O'Brian - O'Brian passed away on 2 January 2000 while writing the 21st novel in the Aubrey-Maturin series. Here are a few of the web pages I have assembled having to do with O'Brian's novels:
- A Gunroom Guide to Patrick O'Brian Resources on the Web
- The Articles of War - the Law aboard Royal Navy sailing ships of war.
- The Articles of Mail - a guide to etiquette in the Gunroom, a mailing list devoted to Patrick O'Brian.
- Nautical Expressions in the Vernacular - Myriad words and expressions in everyday English have origins in nautical terminology and usage - O'Brian went out of his way to make these clear by using these phrases in their original context.
- Music in the Aubrey-Maturin Series - a listing of the many references to musical works in the novels.
- The Dreaded Casting Thread - suggestions for actors to play characters in a hypothetical movie treatment of O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels.
- The Code Duello - which describes the protocols of duelling.
- Geoff Hunt, the artist who painted the wonderful cover illustrations on O'Brian's novels, and a Tribute to Patrick O'Brian drawn soon after he learned of the author's death.
- A key to International Flag and Morse Code Signals.
H.L.Mencken - the leading journalist, literary critic and social commentator of the early half of the 20th Century
- Some of my favorite Mencken quotations.
Mississippi cotton planter William Alexander Percy (uncle of novelist Walker Percy) has described the best way to make a Mint Julep in his autobiography, Lanterns on the Levee.
George Rodrigue is the artist who created Tiffany, the Blue Dog seen at the head of this page.
