Federal government agencies are facing mandates to improve IT efficiency and offer citizens greater transparency into their operations. Most recently, the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) was signed into law with a section on data centers and servers concerning the IT industry and cloud-hosting providers (Section 2867). It is a call to action for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) CIO to provide comprehensive reporting on data center consolidation efforts, savings and performance.
The NDAA is one of the most specific data center policy guidelines that has ever been stipulated by Congress. It strengthens the role of the DoD CIO and defines the metrics for monitoring progress towards the objective of reducing the number of data centers for the purpose of realizing cost savings
