When is the 3rd Edition of V&V coming out?

Living Legends, which is a sequel to V&V (rather than a "3rd edition"), came out in June of 2005. Click HERE to lean how to buy it.

Why are you changing the name from V&V to Living Legends?

There are two issues: copyright and trademark.

Our contract with V&V only covers printing rights, not trademark. While my lawyer tells me that it would be easy to nullify the contract and reclaim the right to publish the V&V manuscript, I have no legal claim to the trademarked name 'Villains & Vigilantes'. So, in order to produce a new V&V-related game, I have to market the game under a new name.

While losing V&V's name recognition is unfortunate, I don't mind that much. In fact, I like the new name better.

Are the Living Legends rules very different from V&V?

The rules are quite different, though there are elements which have passed down from V&V that longtime V&V players will recognize. I initially set out just to give V&V a "facelift" back in the 90's, but in the interest of providing the best game possible I decided to start over from scratch.

What is the mailing address and phone number for FGU? Do they have an email address or a web site?

Info on how to contact FGU, and how to order stuff from them, is on the V&V Web page at the following address:

Can I make copies of the stuff posted at the LL/V&V web site?

You may make electronic or paper copies for your private use. You may repost stuff from the V&V web on your own web page, provided that you include a notice stating that the copyright belongs to the original author. You may NOT sell anything from the V&V web for a profit without written permission from the authors.

Can I put characters or art or other stuff from published LL or V&V rulebooks or adventures on my web site?

All of the published V&V documents are copyrighted by their authors (not by FGU), but those authors have signed a contract with FGU which gives FGU sole publishing rights. That means you need FGU's permission as well as the permission of the original author to copy any text, apart from what you can get away with under the "fair use" provisions of copyright law. I'm not a lawyer, but I suggest that you consult one before posting anything more than a few sentences from any existing V&V product. And you can always ask FGU if it's okay.

All of the published V&V artwork is copyrighted by the artist who drew it (not by FGU). That means you need that artist's permission to copy it. You have permission to copy any of *my* work, but I can't speak for Bill Willingham or any of the others. Any art you copy must be accompanied by a copyright notice, indicating that it's copyrighted to its original artist.

All of the published Living Legends material is copyrighted and trademarked by UNIgames. You have permission to copy any of the art, and *excerpts* of the text (but not entire documents or even large sections) for private use or published reviews. Anything you copy must be accompanied by a copyright notice, indicating that it's copyrighted by UNIgames.

May I use characters from published LL or V&V adventures in my own published or net-posted LL adventures?

For V&V adventures, you need the permission of the author of the adventure where the character appeared in order to use that character. You also need FGU's permission if you intend to copy more than a few sentences from the adventure the character appeared in, and the permission of the artist(s) if you intend to copy illustrations from the adventure the character appeared in. In all cases, you must include appropriate trademark and copyright notices along with any material you use.

For published Living Legends adventures, you need permission from UNIgames.

Can I put my own Living Legends rules variants / adventures / characters / world background / etc. on my web page?

If you're not interested in making money off all of your hard work, or if you've submitted it to us and we rejected it, you're welcome to give it away. We would still appreciate it if you'd send us a copy of any major Living Legends document before you start giving it away for free. We may be able to offer constructive criticism, or even a publishing deal (assuming that you haven't already offered it to us and been turned down). If you do wind up giving it away, be sure that you properly attribute all copyright and trademark information.

Can I write LL material for you? What's the procedure?

Here's what to do:

1) Put together a SHORT (1-2 page) writing sample.

2) Email your writing sample to unigames@io.com

DO NOT send ideas for adventures or source material you'd like to write: if you can't write well, we can't use you no matter how cool your ideas are. If your writing impresses us enough, we can discuss ideas afterward.

3) Wait patiently. I'll try to get back to you as soon as possible.

Can I sell my Living Legends rules variants / adventures / characters / world background / etc. to another publiser?

If you want to publish your work through a 3rd party publisher, you will need to get our permission IF you intend to use the Living Legends trademark OR if the document contains copyrighted text or images. We will require a percentage of any royalties in such cases.

LL uses both English and Metric measurements. How can I keep it straight?

English measurements are only directly referenced by the Living Legends game mechanics when measuring distances on the tabletop. All other mentions of English measurements in the game are there to show how to convert real-life English measurements to Metrics.

In V&V, How do Sonic Powers function as a defense?

We treated Sonic defense like Power Blast defense - it takes a saved action to throw up sonic interference in front of each incoming attack.

In V&V, The rules for calculating flight speed for Wings are confusing. What's the proper interpretation?

The d100+20 roll is substituted for the character's ground movement rate when calculating flight speed for Wing devices. In other words:

1) Add +3 to Agility

2) Multiply Agility by ground movement rate (if it's a device, use a d100+20 roll instead of the character's own ground movement rate).

3) Divide by 2.
