| Description: In the early
Spanish southwest, the word bulto
or "bulk" referred to a supernatural entity of sinister proportions -
created by burying a dead body along with a cache of treasure. Bultos come in two varieties. Un bulto blanco manifests as a white animal or woman dressed in white, and might lead one to buried treasure. Un bulto negro are dark and malevolent treasure guardians. Typical is the tale of the terrorized herdsman, accidentally camped near the site of some forgotten act of foul play, awakened by dismal howling to feel a dread weight upon him and feel the bulto's icy touch. |
