Celtic Senon Chief 300 B.C.

This article describes the painting of a 54mm miniature from Andrea Miniatures. the Celtic Senon Chief 300 B.C. The figure is sculpted by Jesus Ara from Andrea or other miniature retailers.

From the enclosed instructions "The figure depicts a Celtic chief. The Celtic warriors did not favour the use of armour. They preferred to fight almost completely nude. Only the chiefs used helmets and ornaments." This photo shows his shield which was painted with bright anthropormorphic designs.

I took a big risk and decided to paint some flamboyant checked pants on this model. I started with blood red. Then painted blue stripes over that. Then painted yellow stripes over that. Then used a fine black Pigma Micron marker over that. I am ambivalent on the results. On the one hand I like the plaid and the crazy weave pattern. On the other hand, my hands were a bit shaky and it does not look super realistic. Oh well, at least I enjoy experimenting
The gaze of the chief
The gaze of the chief
I like how the gaze and the helmet of the model turned out. Unfortunately he is looking down a bit, so you do have to go low and look somewhat upwards to see the face.

The model came in multiple pieces which I pinned and epoxied together. I think I would have had better results with the pants if I held off with the placement of the shield. The shield blocked easy access to painting the pants.

The hand and the spear were also separate, but I waited until the last moment to epoxy those in place. Rather than use the supplied white metal spear, which looked like a wet noodle, I cut a new brass wire spear, which looks a lot more straight and deadly.

One more close up of "Celtic Chief Crazy Pants." The Celtic chief is painted with Reaper Master Series paints.

I hope you enjoyed reading the details of the painting and photographing of a large miniature of a Celtic Senon Chief Perhaps these hints will help with painting ancient warriors.
