The
Matriarchal Rituals series celebrates cultural events that are centered
on women. The series also enabled me to explore surface embellishment
and color. There are eight quilts in the series.

A
Nuestra Senora - La Virgen de Guadelupe
78" x 77", 1990 - $12,513
The Virgen of Guadalupe is the patron saint of Mexico. Her popularity
extends into Canada and Europe, and she is also known as the Goddess
of the Americas. The quilt, the fifth in the series, is designed
in a retablo style with borders around a central medallion, reminiscent
of home shrines found in homes in Mexico and Texas. The home shrine
is the center of religion and culture in the home and also represents
the place where women wield the most influence in Mexican and Mexican-American
culture. The central figure of the Virgen is a sequined version
of the goddess, made in Mexico. She is surrounded by borders of
domestic and imported commercial and hand-dyed cotton and synthetic
fabrics. The quilt is machine pieced, appliquéed and quilted
and embellished with paper, oilcloth, tin ornaments, retablos, beads,
yarn figures, milagros, lace, metallic threads and dimensional fabric
flower, representing the ornament and color in Mexican culture. |
