THE RITUAL CLOTH SERIES
The
Ritual Cloth series evolved from a quilt in a previous series
that suggested a garment. The six-patch format lends itself
to embellishment - a characteristic element in my work. All
three pieces (Sanyan - African Ritual Cloth, Kanji - Japanese
Ritual Cloth, and Santa Sagrada - Aztec Ritual Cloth) also contain
some form of writing, something else I like to incorporate.
These pieces were made specially for the 1996 Embellishment show
in Houston, where I was a featured artist.

Sanyan
- African Ritual Cloth
42" x 39 ", 1996 - $2275
Sanyan means "ritual cloth." The mud cloth sashing
contains a secret language known only to the women who make
it. Who knows what message this piece conveys? Black and white
mud cloth, hand-dyed cotton, silk screened, stamped, machine
pieced, appliquéed and quilted, beaded with bone, glass
and metal beads. |
Kanji
- Japanese Ritual Cloth
52" x 55 ", 1996 - Sold
Kanji is the term for Japanese script. This piece contains three
script images - one is from written instructions for a class,
another is a lovely calligraphed poem, and the last is an old
saying, which translates :
"Man who says it cannot be done should not interrupt
woman who is doing it."
Hand-dyed cotton and rayon, commercial silk, silk-screened,
discharged, foiled, airbrushed, machine pieced and quilted,
embellished with hand-made and commercial beads and tassels.

Santa
Sagrada - Aztec Ritual Cloth
50" x 54 ", 1996 - $2250
Living so close to Mexico, as I do, and having a life-long fascination
with its rich culture and vivid color, I could not resist including
it in my series. Hand-dyed cotton and African mud cloth, silk-screened,
stamped, stenciled, foiled, machine pieced and quilted, embellished
with beaded fringe, draped beaded garland and milagros. |
