C. J. Cherryh

C. J. Cherryrh is very good at creating believable characters in hard science fiction worlds. She puts you in the characters' minds and draws you into complex political situations. My descriptions don't do her work justice and seem somewhat lame to me right now.

Chanur Saga

  1. The Pride of Chanur
  2. Chanur's Venture
  3. The Kif Strike Back
  4. Chanur's Homecoming
  5. Chanur's Legacy

Set far in the future, a lone human stumbles across an area of space inhabited by a number of star-faring races who cooperate out of a need for trade. The stories are told from the point of view of various Han, a race of feline humanoids, space traders. She does an excellent job of putting you inside the Han so that the human seems alien and incomprehensible.

Cyteen

This can be bought as separate books (three) or as one volume. It is an interesting treatment of a society where cloning is common.

The Faded Sun

  1. Kesrith
  2. Shon'jir
  3. Kutath
  4. Serpent's Reach

This is a somewhat grim series about the last two survivors of a race of mercenary warriors and the human who aids them. I enjoyed the books and they describe an interesting interstellar situation. As usual, C. J. Cherryh creates aliens you can believe in and a realistic world which draws you in. In this case, the situation is a bit dark and grim for my tastes.

The Morgaine Cycle

  1. Gate of Ivrel
  2. Well of Shiuan
  3. Fires of Azeroth
  4. Exile's Gate*

* I still need Exile's Gate

I read the first three books of this series in one book, The Morgaine Saga. I love the story and the characters. While on the surface a story of action, there is a very romantic story buried underneath. While a bit grim, the story is about the people and those who rise above the events around them.
