Wanted
These are books I'm looking for or want to read. Many of them were recommended to me by folks on various mailing lists or newsgroups, usually as a general recommendation or a review.
The New List
- Life at Work - The Joy of Discovering What You Were Meant to Do
- by Thomas Moore. A
- The Bluest Eye
- by Toni Morrison.
- Living with the Devil
- by Stephen Batchelor. A
- Faith: Trusting Your Own Deepest Experience
- by Sharon Salzberg. A
- Dharma Punx
- by Noah Levine. A
- The Barn at the End of the World: The Apprenticeship of a Quaker, Buddhist Shepherd
- by Mary Rose O'Reilley. A
- Books by Octavia Butler
- Examples include: Kindred, Parable of the Sower, Fledgling, Lilith's Brood. A
- Books by Margaret Atwood
- Examples include: Moral Disorder and Other Stories, The Penelopiad, Oryx and Crake, The Door, and The Handmaid's Tale. A
- Tricks of the Mind
- by Derren Brown. Recommended by Boing Boing.
- Starhammer
- by Christopher Rowley. Possible inspiration for Halo?
- War and Decision: Inside the Pentagon at the Dawn of the War on Terrorism.
- by Douglas J. Feith. A true inside look at the steps leading to the War on Terror by a true Pentagon insider.
- Shadow Unit
- This is actually a collaborative online book. I've read some of it and it's interesting. It's written like a TV series.
- Dust
- by Elizabeth Bear. Recommended by Instapundit. "technology that's hard to distinguish from the usual fantasy tropes."
- Temeraire
- by Naomi Novik. Recommended by Instapundit. "Basically Patrick O'Brien with dragons added."
- STET, Damnit!: The Misanthrope's Corner, 1991 to 2002
- Deja Reviews: Florence King All Over Again
- by Florence King.
- Do Not Open: An Encyclopedia of the World's Best Kept Secrets
- by John Farndon.
- Better Never To Have Been: The Harm of Coming Into Existence
- by David Benatar. This is more of an anti-recommendation. The author apparently seeks to prove that people are not as happy as they think and that most poeple would have been better off never having been born. Like Peter Singer, this is what happens when crazy people apply logic to issues of morality.
The Old List
This is my old wanted list and needs to be updated...
- GURPS Books
- Spirits, Traveller: Alien Races 4, Alternate Earths 2, Screampunk(?)
- The Seven Pillars of Wisdom
- By T. E. Lawrence. This relates to a GURPS game I once played.
- The Koran
- I have a number of translatiosn of the Bible, but none of the Koran. I would like at least one English translation.
- Tales from the Thousand and One Nights
- Translated by N.J. Dawood. Actually, I don't have to have this version. I'd also like Burton's translation.
- The Recluce Books
- By L.E. Modesitt, Jr. I'm on the Order War and still need the rest... An interesting system of magic and interesting characters. I like heroes who don't want to be heroes.
- Winter's Heart
- By Robert Jordan. This is the next in the Wheel of Time Series.
- Moon...
- By Ben Bova. The sequal to Moonrise and Moonwar. I'm not sure of the title. He also has another Mars book coming out, Return to Mars. Actually, I'll read just about anything by Ben Bova.
- Chill in the Blood
- By P. N. Elrod. This is the latest in one of Elrod's series of vampire novels. All of his books are written from the point of view of a regular guy who just happens to be a vampire.
- Shards of a Broken Crown
- By Raymond E. Feist. This is book four in the Serpent War Saga. I've read most of his other books and am just waiting for this one... Krondor the Betrayal looks like the start of another series. I want this one, too.
- Anything by John E. Stith.
- I read Reckoning Infinity and enjoyed it, though I'd rather have found out more about the creatures and felt like the mystery was dragged out a little too long.
- Grimjack and/or Cynosure
- I'm not sure of the author or the actual book title, but it looked interesting...
- The Microsoft File:
The Secret Case Against Bill Gates
- by Wendy Goldman Rohm. This is all about Bill Gates and Microsoft's business practices.
- Utopia
- By Roger MacBride Allen. This book is the third in a series set in Isaac Asimov's Robots universe. It explores the Three Laws of Robotics with a twist.
- Rocket Propulsion Elements
- By Sutton. This is the classic rocket reference, according to MA Lloyd (GURPSnet).
- Shuttle Down
- By Lee Correy (G. Harry Stine) Allegedly a good book about an unplanned shuttle landing.
- Dumarest
- By E. C. Tubb - This series supposedly strongly resembles Traveller and is difficult to find.
- Armored Cav and Marine
- Two books by Tom Clancy. These are non-fiction books which describe military organizations/equipment. Good gaming resources...
- Genesis Revealed
- This somehow relates to GURPS Bio-Tech and Babylon, though I'm not sure how. Recommended by HAL on the GURPS Mailing List.
- Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series
- by Tad Williams. Starts with The Dragonbone Chair. Recommended by a Wheel of Time Fan.
- Otherworld series
- also by Tad Williams.
- Legends: Stories by the Masters of Modern Fantasy
- Edited by Robert Silverberg. This supposedly will have a Wheel of Time short story by Robert Jordan. Even if it doesn't, the other stories it will have are worth it.
From a post to rec.arts.sf.written.robert-jordan:
- Lloyd Alexander's The Black Cauldron series
- Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising books (these are _incredible_!)
- Ray Bradbury's The Illustrated Man
- Paula Volsky's Illusion
- Guy Gavriel Kay's Tigana
- Aldous Huxley's Brave New World
- Ellen Kushner's Swordspoint
- Jane Yolen's Briar Rose (be sure to have a box of Kleenex with you)
