No Milk
Newsflash! Apparently, while on the Atkins Diet, whatever causes me to have problems with milk and yeast doesn't bother me. I can eat cheese with impunity, which is good, because it's one of the staples of a low-carb diet.
I am allergic to milk and baker's yeast. I am not lactose intolerant, I am actually allergic. My allergy would cause me problems even without all the hormones found in milk you buy at the store. It is very difficult to find food at the store that does not have milk (cheese, cream, whey, etc...) or yeast. I'm going to use this page to vent and to provide information for others on avoiding milk.
What I Eat
I should completely avoid milk in all it's forms: milk, whey, cream, cheese, casien, etc... I should also avoid yeast. To really do this, I can eat almost no pre-prepared food in the store. I have found some things I can eat.
- Tofutti
- Tofutti makes a whole line of milk-substitutes. They make frozen desserts which are pretty good. Recently, I've started eating Cuties, which are little "ice-cream" sandwiches. They also make a pretty good cream cheese substitute.
- Shrimp Cup o' Noodles
- Strangely, most other varieties have yeast in them. I can often eat shrimp flavor noodles, though.
- Uncle Ben's Rice/Noodle Bowls
- Most of these frozen meals are fine for me to eat. Most other brands are not.
- Kroger
- Kroger has recently started carrying a bunch of Vegan cheese substitutes. I have to be careful, as non-vegan dairy-free cheese substitues often have casien, a milk protein. How they get away with claiming to be dairy-free, I'll never know.
What I Don't Eat
Milk products and yeast are found in the most amazing places. Breading on fried foods often contains milk and/or yeast. I have trouble with fast-food because most fast-food places don't want to publish the ingredients to their foods. I've had some look on the web and sending emails.
- Canned Soup
- Campbells, along with most other soup makers, is yeast happy. They must get a bulk discount. My guess is that it adds protein and enhances chicken flavor, letting them use less real meat. Almost every chicken flavored soup has yeast. Some beef flavors have it as well.
- Bread
- Bread bought at the store often contains milk. You can make bread just fine without it, but they seem to like to add it. Even potato bread has milk. Yes, all bread has yeast, but sometimes I want to eat some and I try to find milk-free bread, at least.
