Graham backs into tie for for lead with 65 at State Farm Senior Classic
By DAVID GINSBURG
Associated Press
COLUMBIA, Md. (July 4, 1998) David Graham had just enjoyed an excellent round of golf when he received word that presence was required in the media tent.
Graham smiled, commandeered a golf cart and drove himself to the site at a nice, leisurely pace. He wasn't about to make the same mistake twice.
Graham, still recovering from a back injury caused by a cart mishap, shot a 7-under-par 65 today to move into a first-place tie with Tom Jenkins after two rounds of the 54-hole State Farm Senior Classic.
Graham jammed a disk in April after shooting a sparkling 69 in the first round of The Tradition. The accident occurred when an attendant driving him to the press room for interviews hit a large speed bump while moving a bit too fast.
"I couldn't walk for four days,'' Graham said.
The jarring blow forced Graham to withdraw from the tournament and left him virtually inactive for nearly a month. He said today that he's still only at 95 percent, despite receiving extensive treatment for back spasms.
So after his solid round today, Graham didn't take any chances -- he drove himself to the meet the media.
"Hopefully this is the start of me playing well again,'' said Graham, vying for his second title of the year. "I'm really only just starting to get back to form now. It takes a while.''
