A Cherokee High School sophomore was killed Tuesday afternoon in an accident at Boling Park in Canton.

The Canton Police Department and Cherokee County School System are investigating the death of Josh Reider, 15, son of Scott and Judy Reider of Canton.

The accident happened in the park next to the high school after 4 p.m. as Josh was riding in the back of a pick-up truck, according to German Rivas, public information officer for the police department.

He was helping transport wooden lockers for the baseball team. The team was moving the lockers from the varsity football locker room next to the stadium to the baseball field.

Josh was knocked out of the truck as it crossed speed bumps in the road, Rivas said.

Cherokee EMS transported him by ambulance to Northside Hospital-Cherokee in Canton where he died from his injuries.

Mike McGowan, director of public relations and partnerships for the school system, said there will be extra counselors at the school today.

We'll try to help the family and the students cope with this tragedy,McGowan said.
