Supplier WAN Support

Provided support for International Wide-Area communications enabling supplier access to the Ford network. Troubleshot problems with new and existing connections. Coordinated the conversion from X.25 to IP-based communication. Support was direct for Ford Corporate and over the telephone for all remote sites. Support included configuration of remote servers.

Application Testing and Evaluation

Performed testing of CAD and Product Information Management (PIM) application developed by vendor and on-site personnel. Developed method for tracking the time of specific events in the data sharing process and used this method to characterize the performance of the application in different network infrastructure environments. Developed Perl scripts to facilitate data reduction.

LAN Support

Provided the primary contact and initial response to issues concerning the local network. Coordinated all work done by corporate network support contractor. Worked with the network planners to improve performance and allow for projected growth of the local system. Provided direct support of modem bank for access to local resources.

Unix Server Administration

Installed, configured, and provided user administration for Metaphase (Oracle-based PIM application) and I-DEAS TDM (CAD application). Installed, configured, and maintained communications systems.

System/Network Programmer (CIBER consultant)
MCI - Cedar Rapids, IA
(February 1995 - February 1996)

ARU Test Tools

Supported development of a real-time audio interface platform providing automated operator functions. The platform uses UNIX InterProcess Communication (IPC) and network protocols. Most development was done in C and UNIX shell including Perl and Korn. Some evaluation work was done in C++. Required interaction with all developers on this platform, the manual operator platform, and the test activities, in both Cedar Rapids, IA and Richardson, TX.

ARU Regression Tool

Developed and supported tools to provide regression testing of the automated platform. Stabilized the main test driver. Reviewed, corrected and modified the existing code. Developed documentation to support the test tools for the automated platform and also an on-line format using HyperText Markup Language (HTML) making it available to World Wide Web clients behind the firewall.

Console Test Integration Tool

Designed, developed and delivered an integration tool for testing of both the manual and automated platforms. This tool provides a subscription service delivering state information on all active automated console processes to all interested test clients. It uses a custom UDP/IP protocol and a UNIX named pipe. It also enables regression of the entire site process involving manual and automated operations.

TECHNICAL ENVIRONMENT: C, C++, CMVC, X-WINDOWS, MOTIF, GNU EMACS, AIX, KORN, BOURNE, PERL, HTML, IBM RS/6000, POWERPC, IBM X-STATION, INTERNET, ETHERNET, TCP/IP, IBM PC, OS/2, DOS/WINDOWS, NOVELL NETWARE, NETSCAPE, KERMIT

Computer Specialist
U.S. Geological Survey

UNIX System and Network Administration

Provided local network support including setting up the Ethernet network, routers, bridges, and twisted-pair hubs. Network environment included UNIX workstation, X-Terminals, and DOS/Windows computers.

Installed Sun 3 diskless systems as X-terminals into the DG/UX environment. These were served from a Sun 3 server running SunOS.

Established HTTPD Web Server. Developed Site Home Page including CGI scripts.

Installed software and conducted ongoing system maintenance.

Trained users on the system and provided on-line help.

Extended the local network using a SLIP implementation which included porting the existing software from a DG-UX environment and installing necessary hardware and configurations using Proxy ARP.

Implemented the Network Time Protocol to provide time synchronization of the computers on the network using Internet sources. Developed utilizing C under UNIX with interaction with Kernel and Network Sockets.

Developed installation packages including NTP and Kermit for use at other sites.

Database Development
