AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS

Lou Gehrig's Disease; ALS

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a disorder involving loss of the use and control of muscles. The nerves controlling these muscles are destroyed, which results in loss of muscle tissue due to the lack of nervous stimulation. Muscle strength and coordination decreases, beginning with the voluntary muscles (those under conscious control, such as the muscles of the arms and legs). The extent of loss of muscle control continues to progress, and more and more muscle groups become involved.

There may be a loss of nervous stimulation to semi-voluntary muscles, such as the muscles that control breathing and swallowing. There is no effect on ability to think or reason. 5- 10% of cases are thought to be due to a genetic mutation. The rest of the cases are sporadic. Though it is still not known what precisely is the cause of the nerve cell destruction, it is thought to be due to free radical injury associated with toxicity of glutamate, a neurotransmitter.

ALS affects approximately 1 out of 100,000 people. It appears in some cases to run in families. The disorder affects men more often than women. Symptoms usually do not develop until adulthood, often not until after age 50.

It all started in 1999 when Uncle Billy thought he had a cold and just couldn’t shake it. From there on, his symptoms just started getting worse.  He was having difficulty breathing and finally had to go on a ByPap machine.  His left shoulder then started bothering him then his legs, then a ventilator the last year of his life to help him breathe. He had numerous spells of pneumonia and would bounce back with the treatment of antibiotics.  This disease finally put him to bed where he stayed until his last days with us. I feel very lucky and fortunate to have been able to be with my Uncle Billy the last year of his life.  He was a very loving and caring person.  “He was and is my hero and best friend and is missed very much”. (written by his niece Chris Tidwell)

On Sunday, October 6, 2002, in Austin, Texas his 2 nieces Janice Elaine Bozarth, Chris Tidwell and nephew Wayne Jacobs along with our loving mother Betty Ann Marie Ledet-Jacobs, sister of Billy Larry Ledet, his 2 great nieces Wendy Castro, Cherie Tidwell, great great nephew Anthony Castro, daughter Jeanene LaPointe, son-in-law Eric LaPointe, 2 grandsons Aaron and Austin LaPointe, his wife Jeanette Ledet and several  friends of the family walked in the walk-a-ton “Walk to Dfeet ALS”. This walk was to help raise the awareness and help in the funds to research ALS.  We the "Ledet Team" walked in honor of our beloved Uncle, Brother, Father, Grandfather and Husband.

The song below was one of my Grandmother Alcidie Jeanne Ledet's favorite songs and was sung by my sister Loretta Ann Witten, brother-in-law Jimmy Witten, niece Jaime Rene Witten and nephew James Witten at his funeral.
