In a recent "On Language" column in the New York Times Magazine, William Safire discussed and defined the word "amateur". He wrote that the word is derived from the Latin word meaning "to love" and, therefore, an amateur is simply a person who does something for the love of it, and not necessarily someone who doesn't get paid.
Conversely, just because someone is getting paid, it doesn't mean that the person cannot love what he's doing. So a professional can still be an "amateur" in this sense of the word.
You will no doubt be happy to know that there is a point to all this. This fanzine is the result of the combined effort of many people, none of whom get paid for their efforts. We're all doing this because it is something that we really want to be doing. So it is quite gratifying when somebody is recognized for the work that they've done.
Thus, I am very pleased to announce that Rob Garitta's "Epilogue" from last issue will be reprinted in the pages of Autoduel Quarterly in its Fall issue. We would like to think that Rob's piece is just the first from these pages to make into the big time. Of course, we're not exactly holding our breaths until the next time. After all, ADQ can only print about 4 stories per year, and there is a lot of competition for those few spots. That's one of the reasons that this magazine was founded: to provide another outlet for writers and readers Car Wars fiction.
Still, it's a sign that we're doing something right. And we'd love to keep on doing it.
