Looking for a cheap way to get out of the country? Try Mexico! This site compiles references and information that will get you from Texas to the beach in Mexico...as cheap as possible. Plus, I needed an excuse to put my picture on the internet!
The state of the travel industry constantly evolves. About a year ago it was easy to find ultra-cheap all-inclusive getaways. For example, Drew booked a three-day AI at a 6-star Cancun resort for $414 -- flight, food, beer,hotel, transfers and tax included -- in the middle of November. It was the deal of the year.
Those days, unfortunately, are over. Now, that same trip will either be at least $150 more, or you will stay at a 4-star resort at best. Plus, the tourist areas of Mexico aren't all that cheap anyway.
Rising prices call for an adjustment in expectations. A better way to get to the beach is warranted. The questions remain:
Easy to get to, easy to get around in, and easy to find what you need, including hotels, transportation, food, beer, ISP's, snorkeling, diving, plus many other side trips...on the cheap! Playa is the anti-Cancun.
Playa del Carmen is located about 20 miles south of Cancun. It offers all the advantages of a vacation to Cancun, but without the high-rise hotels, hectic environment, and expensive lodging and transportation. In PdC, all buildings are three stories max, everything you need is within walking distance, and, if you are willing to stay in a hotel that's not right on the beach, everything gets a lot cheaper. Rest assured...if you feel the need to spend a lot of money you could do that too. World-class lodging and restaurants can easily be found.
But Drew can't get the expensive stuff, so he found a great hotel very close to the beach, with free coffee and pastries in the morning, $2 lunches, $5 dinners, $1 transportation (to get out of town), and seriously cheap internet access, all right around the corner. Most importantly, Drew was able to walk to the beach or the entertainment/shopping area in five minutes or less!
