YossarianYossarian is the on-going saga of Irving Yossarian, his wife Lori, his former college roomie Tom Bedlam and the staff and hangers-on of the Clackamette Preview, the Oregon newspaper where he works. Oh, yes -- and there's Bigfoots. And a Chupacabra.I've been drawing Yossarian since high school; he's currently running in the Clackamas Review and Oregon City News, the paper where I'm currently working as a reporter (hey, draw what you know). This site has a lot more: check out the cartoons page for older Yossarians and other cartoons (especially a few illustrations from the paper), the art page for desktops and other graphics I've produced, and the gaming page for Role Playing Game-related materials. ![]() Here's another Yos from the college days... does anyone out there remember that 'Mastercard, I'm Bored' ad campaign today?? Another update, not too late. Almost completely up to date with the strip in the paper, now. If you check the dates on these strips you'll notice a gap -- there's strips for 1/31/2002 and 2/14/2002. but no 2/2 ... that would be due to the new little critter Phoenix (see below) being born right around that time. March 21, 2002 Another long gap. Now, this time I had a good excuse: Phoenix Anne Stroup was born February 3, 2002. Things have been... busy. Between the new wee one and Merlin's (2 years old) insistance on spending every moment that I'm at the computer playing 'Pajama Sam' ... well. In any case, some new material us up; enjoy. ...
Finally updated ... the good folks at my web host ISP (Illuminati Online) have got my account updated, so I have an additional 40 megs to fill up. Honest, I had a whoppin' big update prepared on 1/7, when I ran smack-dab into a limit on my disk space. I'll have another update within a few days (honest) with the last couple of strips. January 7, 2002 Amazing; an almost timely update. And a new college strip to boot. Meanwhile, the Clackamette -- er, Clackamas Review/Oregon City News has descended into an advanced state of higgeldy-piggeldy; we're moving next week. My normal neat filing system of vertical stacks (I index by strata) is now buried under everything I've accumulated for the past three years. December 28, 2001 The worst break yet... I haven't updated this page for months. After 9/11 I just put up the strips I did for that and never got around to doing anything else. Well, I'm back and I'm making a New Year's resolutuon (oh, ghod, not that...) to get and stay up to date with this thing. October 3, 2001 Another seriously delayed update. On the main page now are the two strips I did right after the attacks. The top one... well, we were sending the paper out to the printers the morning of the attacks; for the strip that actually ran that week check the archive -- this is the strip I did right after the attack. The next one was a week later. I hope I managed to say something without getting maudlin. September 12, 2001 A little bit more timely there. I'm posting this in the mdidle of the national tragedy... hard to really concentrate on something dumb like this at a time like this. I'm mostly spending my time here hitting the reload button every ten minutes looking for the latest, like eveyone else. If you've stumbled across this page and it provides even a momentary diversion, I'm glad. Otherwise, I don't have anything profound to say about what the nation's going through. September 7, 2001 Well, that certainly did take a while, didn't it? OK, allow me to say: whew. At the Clackamas Review/Oregon City News we've had a few changes... I suppose I can blame the delay on that. Our publisher has left for greener pastures, leaving us sadly without adult supervision (we'll miss you, George), and our Noble Editor left for a family trip -- the day after George's departure. Within three days the rest of us were slathering on face paint and posting boars' heads on stakes around the perimeter, it was atotal 'Lord of the Flies' situation. In any case, we got through it (note to Clackamas County readers of this page: do NOT look at the table of contents in the latest ish of the paper) and I'm trying to get back on track with the delayed updates. To make up for it (right...) I'm adding a new college strip. August 20, 2001 OK, so I'm just about a week behind now. I can deal with that. All right, here's another cool comic you won't see in any local (PDX-based) paper: Monty, formerly "Robotman" and then "Robotman and Monty." August 13, 2001 Another slow update. However, I've found a great new comic on the web -- check out Bob, the Angry Flower. There, that's worth something, isn't it? BTW, that gradient in panel 6 looked way better before the whole thing was scanned and reduced; I'm trying out larger pitch tone to see what work. August 7, 2001 Well, that certainly took a long time. The new Yos is up, a week late or so; I'll have the next (already done and off to the printers with the latest edition of the CR/OCN) in a few days. I've been playing with tone -- Manga-derived techniques -- and I don't know yet how it will really look in print, much less shrunk down to 72 dpi and screen size..Also I'm thinking about using a comic font instead of hand-lettering, but I'm still searching for a drawing program/font combo that will do the trick; if anyone has aby suggestions drop me a line. July 24, 2001 The latest Yossarian is up. As you can see, there's going to be a few weeks of gags as we segue into the next phase of my main story arc. I think I'm going to use this time to get some more of the archive online; in particular, I'd like to get the original 'Biugfoot Valley' and 'Chupacabra' stories up. July 17, 2001 ... And this wraps the 'Return to Bigfoot Valley' storyline. I think I've just about got the mechanism for updating the page down, too. July 9, 2001 There, the latest strip's up, and in record time; it won't be available even in the paper's lobby until tomorrow. I'm just about fini with this particular segment, one more and I have to decide whether to plow ahead with the continuity or drop in a few one-shot jokes. July 5, 2001 The latest strip is up, although I'd like to be getting them online a lot quicker than this; they're still lagging behind the print version. We're all just groggy at the newspaper this week. We're all trying to get the next paper out despite the big hole in the middle of the week caused by the 4th -- plus the fact that no body is at work, everyone has taken the week or some chunk of it off. New Yossarian gets drawn tomorrow, if I'm conscious. Now... must... type... police... logs... And then get some sleep. July 2, 2001 Well, that certainly took longer than I thought it would. The Yossarian created on 6/21/2001 is now up -- updated from the newspaper, if you're reading this and all went well -- and the 6/28 strip is coming. Our DSL line is working fine, but the paper itself is in e-mail limbo right now. For anyone here looking for gaming materials: I've put a slightly updated version of my K.I.S.S rules up on the gaming page, with what should be a better .pdf conversion and slightly updated rules. The rules are now in playtest, and the first spin around the block with them was fairly successful. June 28, 2001 Wheee! We've got DSL at the Clackamas Review and Oregon City News. The practical impact of that is that I should now be able to update this site from work, with new Yossarians going up more quickly. If the bandwidth isn't clogged with mp3s and weird flash animations I'll have the next Yos up tomorrow. June 25, 2001 The whole "Return to Bigfoot Valley" storyline is now up. I'm going to backfill the main archive now, adding the Chupacabra storyline too, with links to the start of those stories; older stories, including the original "Bigfoot" tale, will be linked to through the 'Toons page. I'd still like to get some more of the old college work up as well. One thing I still haven't decided is when to post the latest Yos. I've been leaving the old one up until the new one is out in print, but there's no reason why I can't post new ones here before the paper goes to print. This page isn't exactly racking up giant hit counts yet, but if/when people find it I'll post new strips more quickly... once we get DSL at the paper I'll be able to post a new Yossarian as soon as it's been scanned and photoshopped for addition to the layout. June 16, 2001 A complete redesign: the latest Yossarian to be posted now dominates the main page. In addition, I've started building a real archive of strips... through about February '00, at least. June 12, 2001 Well, the site is up. I'm not going to start pimping it until next week, so if you've found it early, you're either friend or family, someone who got one of my e-mails and is checking the address in my .sig, or just lucky. For the record, I've got several actual goals with this site: in the future I'll be putting up a lot more of my writings, my RPG/game related material, and, especially, Yossarian, my comic strip. In the mean time it's pretty much random content, with the Yossarian area slowly growing storyline by storyline.
