Annapolis, Maryland

The Annapolis Traditional Dance Society holds contra dances on most first Saturdays at the air-conditioned meeting hall of the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 70, on Generals Highway in Crownsville, 5 miles north of the Annapolis Mall. Dances are held Tuesdays at Be Here Now at 5 Biltmore Ave near Pack Place, and The Old Farmers Ball dances are held in the Bryson Gym of Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, east of Asheville on I-40. The Asheville Contra Dancers dance on occaasional Saturdays. The Asheville Summer Soiree is held in summer. Fiddlehead dance weekends are held twice a year, in May and Septermber. The Southeastern Ohio Traditional Dance Society holds monthly dances during the school year, usually on Saturdays at the Dance Factory on Factory Street off of West Union. The Austin Barn Dance is held on Wednesdays at Hancock Recreation Center on East 41st Street. This dance features local callers and a pick-up band. The Bloomington Old-Time Music and Dance Group dance every Wednesday, at the Harmony School much of the year, and Upper Cascades Park in summer. Dancers often go out for food or drink afterwards. The Charlotte Country Dancers are among the wackiest and the friendliest dance s I have ever found, and they dance every Monday at the Unitarian Church on Sharon Amity road just west of Randolph Road. Dancers often go to Lupie's for food afterwards--try the meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and carrots. The Charlotte Dance Gypsies dance one Saturday a month and hold Gypsy Meltdown in late march. New Haven, Connecticut | schedule | local info | regional info

The New Haven Country Dancers dances are usually held on first, third and last Saturdays throughout the summer at the historic 1816 Barn on Whitney Avenue, and the rest of the year at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church at Chapel and Olive streets, or the Arbeiter Maenner Chor on the campus of the University of New Haven.

• While you're there, have a Wooster Street pizza: Ask for broccoli rabe or for fresh tomato, basil, and garlic at Sally's (they're not on the menu) and grab a cool t-shirt and poster drawn by regular customer and fan Garry Trudeau; then try a white clam (no mozarella) pie at Pepe's, where they shuck their own clams fresh from Rhode Island. Some contra dancers have been known to become addicted to pizza after visiting these establishments.
• And stop by the Beinecke rare book library, see the Dodo and the cliff swallows (which may be gone by now) at the Peabody Museum. The Peabody is constructing a new building to house its collection, which is one of the best I've seen. Finish all this touristing with a hamburger sandwich at Louis' Lunch and hop across the street to check out the neon parking garage.

Traditional American Dance and Music Society (TADAMS) holds dances on second and fourth Saturdays at the Lewis Ginter Recreational Center on Hawthorne at Walton. Ginter Hall, as it's commonly called, is a lovely old building with some of the nicest wooden floors I've ever found--the main hall is as good a floor for stompin' as Palo Alto. Dancers go out for food at Joe's after the dance.

San Diego Folk Heritage sponsors dances usually on first, second and third Fridays and fourth Saturdays at Trinity United Methodist Church, on Thorne Street a block south of Upas. The Saturday dances are preceded by a potluck. Susan Sterne writes "Our second Friday dances are Step Lively dances, geared toward experienced dancers; beginning dancers may want to try a few regular dances before venturing out to one of these." The Bay Area Country Dance Society dances on first and third Saturdays and fourth Fridays at St. Paul's Church at 43d Avenue and Judah St in San Francisco, second, fourth, and fifth Saturdays at the YWCA on Alma St north (?) of San Antonio Ave in Palo Alto, first, third, and some fifth Wednesdays at Northern Fellowship hall on Cedar Street just east of Shattuck, and on second Fridays at the Finnish hall on Tenth Street just north of University Avenue in Berkeley. They also hold square dances on Second and fourth Sundays at the El Cerrito Veterans' Hall on Stockton Avenue in El Cerrito. The San Francisco site is on the N-Judah streetcar line; the Palo Alto location is somewhat difficult to find. Dancers go to Pasquale's (also on the N-Judah along Irving St) for pizza after the SF dance, and go out for food after the Palo Alto dance as well.
