[World] [Characters] Adventures [Humor]

The PCs have decided to expericence a true Viking raid - as opposed to other the other adventuring stunts they have gone through. Even through its late in the seaon and the storm gods are threatening the sea gods with a battle royal, one further raid has been setup.

Ref, son of a clan chief, Sorti, has initiated a late season raid. He has been ill all summer and has missed most of the successful expeditions. Resentful of the booty, thralls and glory the other clansmen have attained, he convinced several villages in the area to contribute to his enterprise. This expedition, consisting of mainly young and inexperienced islanders, is planned to hit the villages along Bosocta’s far western coasts. The plan is to travel up a couple of rivers and hit two villages deep inside Bosoctian territory. Hopefully this late in the year, that far inland no one would expect an assault. Four ships from three villages in wolverine clan territory sailed out with the cream of norse young.

The plan seemed to work at first. Two villages were attacked and sacked, and Ref, despite leading from the rear and taking part only toward the end of the battles, insisted on pushing his luck. A third village was targeted, but this time the ships captains insisted that Ref’s ship take the fore and lead the assualt. Since his ship was least damaged and had taken not one casualty, Ref could not back down. The village of Rills in Herych Bay was attacked by all four ships in what was hoped to be a quick surgical strike. Unfortunetly, the Bosoctians were ready. The ships were sighted as they entered the bay and local militia forces were reinforced with regular troops.

Due to poor tides and weather, the ships did not arrive at Rills until near dusk. Rather then wait until dawn, as was the tradition, Ref insisted on attacking immediately and lead the initial assualt himself. The first wave made it into the town proper, but as the PCs followed up Ref’s attack, they were cutoff and surrounded by the additional troops. Rather and withdrawl and attack the forces endangering the PCs, Ref split his forces. Most he ordered to secure the town and support the PC’s group if possible, while he took the docks as a way out. Once the docks were his and the beached ships had come around to the town side, Ref boarded the remaining troops, mostly those loyal to him and pulled out. One of the captains complained and Ref’s men cut him down and cast into the sea.

The PC's group and dozens of others in the town were individually surrounded and crushed. Some managed to escape into the surrounding woods and a last defense there pushed the troops back momentarily. The vikings scattered into the forest and hills. Many were hunted down and either killed or captured. Three days later, the PCs and a dozen or so clansmen gathered in a dell to the north of Rills. Suspecting that most Bosoctians would search for them inland, the clansmen headed out cross country. ?There goal was agroup of sumgglers working on a lake linked to the sea. They lived off the land for over two weeks and due to their lack of experience in the wilderness, were forced to raid a secluded inn before they starved to death. The attack on the inn gained them enough supplies to last the remainer of the journey and a surprise bonus. A local noble known to consort with the smugglers was caught in the act of forcing his attentions on a barmaid. The PCs took him prisoner and with the barmaids aid, forced directions from him to the smuggler lair. As a reward for her aid, the barmaid was brought along.

The PCs made there way to the lair and convinced the smugglers to take them as far as Ithica - a greek city state known throughout the region as a center of trade, slavery and debauchery. In return for the trip, the PCs were forced to surrender what little loot they had retained on their journey. Once in Ithica, the PCs learned that Ref had broken the city’s neutrality and attacked other ships at anchor. The Ithicans were not pleased with more clansmen in their city; the PCs and their group were captured and imprisoned.

A sentence of death was averted when a priest of Tyche intervened, for some unknown reason and suggested a trial by combat. Most of the group defeated their opponents in the arena and the party was released but under a geas enchantment to locate Refs men and either kill them or bring them to justice.

The newly released vikings acted in typical barberic fashion and attacked the country home of a noble who had voted for their death. Stealing his ship, they attempted to sail home, only to get cuaght in a maelstrom and wreck on the beaches of Trolheim Island.
