Brooklyn College: Technical Writing Certificate:
Program Policies
The following policies define the responsibilities and limitations for students taking courses in the Brooklyn College Technical Writing Certificate Program:
- Courses in this program do not guarantee that your writing will improve to the extent that you can make a certain grade in an academic course, qualify for employment, make a certain score on employment tests, or any other such standard.
- The fees you pay for the courses in this program are not refundable for any reason: for example, if you drop out, lose interest, decide the course is not what you wanted, or have schedule conflicts such that you must discontinue the course for several weeks or more.
- Your instructor cannot remind you or prompt you to keep up with the schedule. If you disappear for weeks or even months, your instructor cannot come after you, inquiring about your status.
- You cannot formally begin any course in this program until Brooklyn College has notified your instructor that your payment for the course has been received.
- Your course will end on the date specified. Contact your instructor concerning extensions; however, your instructor is not obligated to grant extensions.
- Some of the courses in this program require that you have access to special software, some of which can be rather expensive. Contact your instructor whether you can use older (and less expensive) versions of that software or use alternate software. Your instructor is not obligated to make these exceptions for you.
- Courses in this program "feature" special software and provide (or point to) introductory-level tutorials on that software and tutorials focusing on skills needed in specific units. However, courses in this program do not provide complete software training. It is your responsibility to ask your instructor specific questions concerning the software or to seek help from other resources such as published books or online forums.
- Grades for the courses in this program are based on the number of projects approved by your instructor and on other studies and quizzes successfully completed. Grade-level requirements are stated on the main page for each course. If you have sent in a writing project but your instructor has not approved it by the time the course ends, how that project is counted toward your final grade is at the discretion of your instructor.
- In the courses in this program, you may revise any project once. You must request opportunities for further revisions from your instructor.
- When you send your instructor a project by e-mail, expect a confirmation e-mail within 3 days. If not, contact your instructor.
- Please allow the instructor one full week to review any paper that you submit. Normally, you will receive instructor reviews much sooner.
- Please allow 48 hours for your instructor to respond to your e-mail (again, response time is likely to be much quicker). Do not expect responses between 4:00 PM and 10:00 AM of the time zone in which your instructor resides, or on weekends.
