Power Tools for Technical Communication: |
In this lab, you select and organize information from existing documents, add headings, lists, and illustrations to create a comparison that uses the point-by-point approach:
- Select one of the options below this box, and and follow the instructions there.
- Create this comparison in your preferred word-processing software.
- Put your name, Comparison Format (Print), and the date on this document, and print it out for your instructor.
Use the information at one of the following web sites to construct a point-by-point comparison as described in Chapter 4 of Power Tools for Technical Communication:
- Analysis of Early Hominids. This web page discusses various aspects of Australopithecus anamensis, Australopithecus afarensis, Australopithecus africanus, Paranthropus robustus (or Australopithecus robustus), Paranthropus boisei (or Australopithecus boisei), and Paranthropus aethiopicus (or Australopithecus aethiopicus). The discussion on this page uses the whole-to-whole approach; collect the information into points of comparison (such as body weight, stature, period of existence, and so on). Use the tables and figures, but be sure to document the source of all this material (see Chapter 21 if necessary).
- Search Engine Comparison. This series of web pages provides detailed comparisons of the major web search engines, but using the whole-to-whole organization approach. Pick at least three of the search engines and at least three of the essential points of comparison (such as databases used, advanced search capability, etc.), and collect information for each point on each of the search engines. Use the tables and figures, but be sure to document the source of all this material (see Chapter 21 if necessary).
- Mahler, Kohut, and Infant Research: Some Comparisons. Study this web page carefully for categories of comparison relating to the theories of these two researchers on child development. Be aware that this a highly detailed, technical article although readable for people untrained in psychology and psychoanalysis. Find at least three points of comparison and then collect information on both Mahler and Kohut for each point. Be sure to document the source of all this material (see Chapter 21 if necessary).
