BIG NUMBERS

This page describes some of the words used in English and other languages for big numbers. It also displays some of the numbers, courtesy of "cut and paste". An attempt is made to derive a system for large number words, and some of these numbers are shown.

The big number words in English, and their origins, are as follows. All of these number words (and perhaps some others) exist in print, and serve as the basis for generalizations below.

As can be seen, there is neither a single definition for these words nor a consistent means of deriving them. The British or European definitions are easier to calculate and make more sense, because a word like "octillion" simply means one million to the eighth power. These definitions are going out of fashion, however, probably because of the dominance of large numbers in American news broadcasts. It is generally becoming accepted that a billionaire has 10⁹ dollars, even in Britain. The American definition is to take the number root, (e.g. "three" from "trillion") adding one, then multiplying the result by three, then taking ten to that power. Thus one trillion comes out to be 10^(3+1)*3 = 10¹².

The number names are generated in four different ways. "Million" is the original, meaning "augmented thousand". "Billion", "trillion", and "quadrillion" are from Latin distributive or combining prefixes for "two", "three", and "four" with "-illion" attached. The meaning was probably originally "million to the second power", "million to the third power", etc. Quintillion, sextillion, and nonillion use as their number root the Latin ordinals meaning "fifth", "sixth", and "ninth". The rest all use cardinal number words, such as "septillion" from septem seven, as opposed to septimus seventh, which would have been "septimillion". The only pattern is that the cardinal numbers seem to prevail later in the sequence.

Using the rules described above and the few really big numbers in print as a lead, I will take for all greater numbers the following formation rule: Latin cardinal number root + -illion. The American formula is 10³⁽ⁿ⁺¹⁾ where n is the number root. The British formula is 10⁶ⁿ or (1,000,000)ⁿ. Note that Latin counting breaks pattern a few times, and I follow that. I also use one non-Latin root, Greek myrioi, 10,000, for the top number in my list.
