June 9, 2003

Hello, friends of Abu-Ali! It is so very nice to be able to write to you in a spirit of hope and thankfulness rather than one of a certain urgency. That is not to say that Abu-Ali's fight is over...it is far from over. But a reprieve we wanted and a reprieve we received. Abu-Ali will not be executed on June 18, 2003!

In light of the Sixth Circuit's granting of Abu-Ali's petition for rehearing and for a stay of execution, this will be the last of the weekly updates, at least for the time being. Our fervent hope is that all of the facts that were suppressed, withheld and misrepresented at Abu-Ali's original trial will now come to light, which is all that Abu-Ali ever wanted.

Citizens for Abu-Ali would like to thank everyone - literally thousands of you - who were supportive of our campaign to encourage Governor Bredesen to grant clemency. You volunteered your time, you donated your personal funds, you wrote letters, you made phone calls, you attended events, you wore buttons on your clothes and stickers on your cars. You told others about his case. You gave words of encouragement. The positive effect of the buzz this grassroots effort generated will likely never be known. Abu-Ali is also personally grateful to each and every one of you who supported this effort.

Thanks also to all of you who attended the awareness raising event at the Belcourt last evening, Have Mercy. It was a wonderful night of celebration and inspiration, as well as great entertainment. In addition - although the final numbers have not yet been tallied - it appears that the Silent Auction and door donations resulted in more than $3,500.00 being raised. These funds will be applied toward (non-legal) expenses associated with the push for clemency on behalf of Abu-Ali.

If you were not able to attend and would still like to make a donation, it is not too late. Donations are still needed and may be sent to the Tennessee Capital Defense Corporation (501.c.3), PO Box 121754, Nashville, TN 37212.

You will be notified as there are new developments in Abu-Ali's case. The website will also be updated periodically. We may very well be pulling together again in the near future to ask our governor to grant mercy for Abu. We will continue to fight until justice is served. But for the time being, at least, Abu-Ali is safe.

Thank you again on behalf of all of us involved with Citizens for Abu-Ali!

Namaste,
Joanna

June 2, 2003

Greetings once again, concerned citizens and Abu-Ali supporters. This is the fifth weekly update on the case of Abu-Ali Abdur'Rahman. Abu-Ali's execution date of June 18, 2003 is now little more than two weeks away. With no reprieve to date, your help and support are vital, especially in garnering awareness and public support for Abu’s cause.

IN THIS WEEK'S UPDATE:

1. CREATIVE THEATRE ON LETHAL INJECTION ISSUE
2. JEFFERSON STREET EVENT - JUNE 5TH
3. HAVE MERCY CONCERT FOR ABU-ALI – JUNE 8TH
4. VIRTUAL MARCH ON GOVERNOR'S OFFICE – JUNE 11TH
5. OTHER THINGS YOU CAN DO

CREATIVE THEATRE ON LETHAL INJECTION ISSUE

In the past week, many of you have read articles, seen news stories on television and heard radio reports on the lethal injection suit brought against the state on behalf of Abu-Ali. The case has generated a lot of buzz and could result in Abu-Ali’s execution being halted or delayed. After a two-day bench trial last week, Chancellor Ellen Hobbs Lyle ruled today that the lethal injection protocol does NOT violate the constitution. Lawyers for Abu-Ali plan to appeal the ruling. In connection with this litigation, Citizens for Abu-Ali will be staging one or more guerilla theatre pieces throughout the city the week of June 2nd. To find out more or to get involved, contact Jessica at (615) 227-5637 or e-mail her at majesca@hotmail.com.

NOTE: The press conference originally scheduled for Wednesday, June 4th, has been postponed.

EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATION - WEDNESDAY, MAY 28TH

Have you wanted to talk to others about Abu-Ali’s situation, but held back because you didn’t feel you knew enough of the facts? Have you been asked questions about the case and not known the answers? Have you wanted to convey to others the gravity of Abu-Ali’s circumstances but felt that you could not adequately do so? Do you yourself have questions about Abu-Ali’s background, his history and the events that brought him to his cell on Tennessee’s Death Row? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, you CANNOT MISS the educational presentation featuring Bradley MacLean and Bill Redick, Abu-Ali's current legal team, and Linda Manning, his spiritual advisor. Brad, Bill and Linda will be putting on a very powerful and moving multi-media program to help educate others about Abu-Ali’s case, as well as the essence of who Abu-Ali is. Telling the story of a person who has no voice is a gift and a great responsibility. For the past two years the life of Abu-Ali has been unfolded by these three individuals who know him best. His is a heartbreaking tale of childhood torture, abandonment, lies and deceit. Come to learn and ask questions. Come to find out how you can get involved. BRING one, two, three or more people with you. And even if you are very well educated about Abu-Ali’s case, come to SHOW YOUR SUPPORT for the cause. BE A PRESENCE so that we can show others how many of us are concerned for this man whom our state wants to execute on June 18th. Let’s show Governor Bredesen that this is not the concern of just a few random citizens – this is a concern of a great number of Tennesseans. Many of us who are involved in Abu-Ali’s cause came to be so because we attended a similar presentation. We feel safe in saying that you will be changed by the experience. Come give two hours of your time to support this effort. Let this be the ONE thing you do this week to help Abu-Ali.

WHEN: Wednesday, May 28th, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm
WHERE: First Unitarian Universalist Church at 1808 Woodmont Blvd in Nashville. For directions, go to www.firstuunashville.org.
CONTACT: Sarah Anderson at (615) 386-3636 for more information.

LETHAL INJECTION HEARING – THURSDAY AND FRIDAY, MAY 29TH AND 30TH

Many of you read the heartbreaking article written by Matt Pulle which came out in last week’s Nashville Scene. (For those of you who missed it, go to www.nashvillescene.com and click on "City Limits") The article describes in devastating detail the gruesome and painful step-by-step process the death row prisoner goes through in being executed by lethal injection. On that very subject, lawyers for Abu-Ali have filed a lawsuit against the State of Tennessee on his behalf, arguing that, among other things, lethal injection violates public policy, is cruel and unusual punishment and is unconstitutional. Among the allegations is that, because of the drugs administered in connection with the lethal injection process, lethal injection violates the Tennessee Non-livestock Animal Humane Death Act. The State Department of Correction’s initial response was that a prisoner on death row is not protected under this statute, which protects animals such as pet rabbits, chicks, ducks and pot-bellied pigs. (Under the law, it is inhumane to administer the lethal injection drugs - pavulon and potassium chloride - to such animals but apparently they do not feel that prisoners should be afforded the same protection.) Abu-Ali’s case on this issue is scheduled to be heard beginning Thursday, May 29th, in Davidson County Chancery Court, Part III, and will likely continue on Friday, May 30th. In connection with this litigation, Citizens for Abu-Ali is planning to stage a guerrilla theater piece on one of the days of the hearing. If you are interested in participating, contact Jessica at (615) 227-5637 or majesca@hotmail.com.

Also – as mentioned in our last e-mail communication – the publication of Matt Pulle’s article would be a PERFECT opportunity to write or e-mail a letter-to-the-editor to the Nashville Scene and let them know of your support of Abu-Ali’s case. Likewise, the City Paper published the first of a two-part interview with Abu-Ali by Amanda Wardle. Let the Nashville Scene and the City Paper know that you appreciate their coverage of this very important case and at the same time GENERATE MORE COVERAGE. (Help us measure the "buzz" that our letters are creating by emailing mercyforabu@yahoo.com and letting us know that you have sent a letter and to which paper. Thanks!) Remember to keep it short and include your name, street address and daytime phone - only name, hometown and zip code will be published.

May 19, 2003

Greetings again, Abu-Ali supporters! You are receiving this e-mail update because you have expressed an interest in the case of Abu-Ali Abdur'Rahman, and/or because someone who knows you felt that you would be concerned about what is happening. Updates are being sent out each Monday to keep you informed of upcoming events and new developments in Abu-Ali's case. Abu-Ali's execution date of June 18, 2003 is now less than a month away, and support for his case is crucial.

IN THIS WEEK'S UPDATE:

1. POETRY IN LIBRARY PARK, Wednesday, May 21 from noon to 1pm
2. WRITE A LETTER - Get your voice out there!
3. UPCOMING EVENTS IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS
4. THINGS YOU CAN DO TO HELP

POETRY IN LIBRARY PARK - RESCHEDULED!
WHEN: Wednesday, May 21st from noon to 1pm
WHERE: The small park across the street from the downtown public library (on Church street between 6th and 7th). There is free/cheap parking in the garage on 7th street - get your ticket stamped at the library.

Come enjoy a poetry reading in honor of Abu-Ali...and bring friends! Abu himself is a poet and we will read a poem that he has chosen especially for this event. IF YOU ARE A POET and would like to read a poem that you have written or a piece by another author which you feel has significance for Abu-Ali's case, please contact Jessica at (615) 227-5637 or majesca@hotmail.com.

WRITE A LETTER
The age-old art of writing a letter is one of your most powerful tools in saving the life of Abu-Ali right now. IF YOU ONLY DO ONE THING THIS WEEK, please write and send one letter, either to Governor Bredesen or one of the local newspaper Letter-to-the-Editor sections expressing your concerns about this case and why you support clemency for Abu.

Direct letters to the Governor are critical, since they let him know that we are awake and aware. And letters to the editor, even when they are not published, actually shift the editors' attention and encourage them to cover events like Poetry in the Park and our upcoming Press Conference. So set aside 15 minutes and write, write, write!

* You can find "talking points" and sample letters at abu-ali.org (follow the link to "how to help").

* The Governor's address is Governor Phil Bredesen, State Capitol, Nashville, TN 37243-0001. You may also wish to call the Governor's office (615) 741-2001 and/or e-mail at phil.bredesen@state.tn.us.

* Letters to the Editor should be short (less than 300 words for The Tennessean, less than 100 for The City Paper) and include the writer's name, street address and daytime telephone number. Only the name, hometown and ZIP code will be published. Here are some e-mail addresses for local papers: letters@tennessean.com, editor@nashvillescene.com, letters@nashvillecitypaper.com.

OTHER THINGS YOU CAN DO TO HELP

DONATIONS NEEDED
Those of you reading this newsletter may have seen the facts of Abu-Ali's case several times over. The problem is that only a relatively small number of people are aware of the very serious flaws with his case. Can you imagine being involved in something where your life is about to be taken and no court has ever hearing your story? Those of us who visit Abu have seen what the state wishes to keep from you: his humanity. Abu, the poet. Abu, the artist. Abu, the man concerned for abused women and children. Abu, the one who calls others to their daily prayers. Abu, who is so much a part of nature. The very limited access to the outside world from inside Death Row makes it nearly impossible for the person residing there to have a voice. It is unbearably painful at times to visualize Abu as we know him and to recognize our limited ability to share our friend with the larger, caring community. We try to introduce him to you through his words, pictures, his flute playing, poetry, art, his humor, and loyalty as a friend. A fund was set up some time ago to educate the public concerning Abu's situation. We need your help getting the word out to those who will otherwise never have the opportunity to know about his case. Please donate generously to the Tennessee Capital Defense Fund (501.c.3) and mail checks to PO Box 121754, Nashville, TN 37212. Imagine that Abu's life depends on it.
