The unit formed in September 1861 and fought with the Army of Potomac in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina through the end of the U.S. Civil War.
Regiment lost during service 7 Officers and 89 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 3 Officers and 163 Enlisted men by disease. Total 262.A history of the regiment was written by Captain J. Madison Drake, describing the early years of the regiment's adventure. Another volume by Captain Drake recounts his capture by the Rebels, the dismal conditions in Confederate prisons, and his subsequent escape by jumping off a prison train during a prison evacuation. Neither book contains an index of persons mentioned, but the flowery Victorian language of this eye-witness account make interesting reading and may provide insights into the lives of the soldiers.
