JACK/JENNIFER BEDROOM/BATHROOM. JENNIFER, WEARING JACK'S PAJAMA TOP, IS SITTING IN BED NIBBLING THE REMNANTS OF THE FRUIT PLATTER. FROM THE BATHROOM, WE HEAR THE SOUND OF RUNNING WATER AND JACK SINGING IN THE SHOWER, TO THE TUNE OF "MAN OF LA MANCHA."JACK: (SINGING)
THE RUNNING WATER STOPS. JENNIFER SMILES AND SHAKES HER HEAD.JENNIFER: Jack, sometimes I think you're crazy...
JACK EMERGES FROM THE BATHROOM, TOWEL WRAPPED AROUND HIS WAIST, HE'S DRIPPING WATER EVERYWHERE.JACK: Hey, I heard that...
JENNIFER: (INNOCENT) Heard what?
JACK: Don't play the innocent with me. I heard you say I was crazy.
JENNIFER: Jack, I meant that as a compliment.
JACK: A compliment? I don't think so...
JENNIFER: But it was. Don't think of it as crazy, think of it as... as...
JACK: A divine madness?
JENNIFER: You mean like saints?
JACK: Or poets...
JENNIFER: Or Don Quixote...
JACK: (EMBARASSED) Oh. You mean you heard my singing.
JENNIFER: Jack, I think the whole neighborhood might have heard your singing.
JACK: That bad?
JENNIFER: No, just... unexpected.
JACK: Unexpected? I believe I've sung before. In fact, I think I sang to you.
JENNIFER: I thought you made me swear never to mention that again.
JACK: You're right, I did. Forget that I brought it up.
JENNIFER: OK... But that's too bad.
JACK: What's too bad?
JENNIFER: That I can't mention your singing.
JACK: Why?
JENNIFER: Because I thought it was very romantic.
JACK: You did?
JENNIFER: Yes. And it inspired me.
JACK: Inspired you?
JENNIFER: Absolutely...
JACK: How?
JENNIFER GETS UP OUT OF BED, WALKS OVER TO JACK AND PLACES A HAND ON HIS CHEST.JENNIFER: Sing something and find out.
JACK: Well...
JENNIFER RUNS HER HAND LIGHTLY DOWN HIS CHEST, STOPPING AT THE TOWEL.JACK: (CONT'D) (SUDDENLY INSPIRED)
JENNIFER: Inspiration...
JENNIFER GRABS JACK'S TOWEL AND TOSSES IT OVER HIS SHOULDER. HOLD ON THEIR FACES, AS JACK PULLS JENNIFER TO HIM FOR A KISS.ABE: We're too late.CUT TO: CARVER AND CARVER DETECTIVE AGENCY. ABE AND LEXIE RUN INTO THE OFFICE, TO THEIR DISMAY, THE PLACE IS WRECKED.
LEXIE: Will you look at this...
ABE AND LEXIE LOOK AROUND. FILES AND PAPERS ARE STREWN EVERYWHERE. THE DRAWERS IN CARRIE'S DESK ARE ALL OPEN, THE PLANT HAS BEEN KNOCKED ONTO THE FLOOR AND LIES IN A PUDDLE OF DIRT.ABE: Let's check the rest of the office...
LEXIE: Okay. But I'm sure they're long gone.
ABE: You're probably right. But we have to be sure.
THEY SLOWLY WALK INTO ABE'S OFFICE. ONCE AGAIN, PAPERS AND FILES ARE EVERYWHERE. ABE REACHES OUT AND SQUEEZES LEXIE'S HAND. THEY PROCEED TO LEXIE'S OFFICE. IT IS EVEN MORE OF A MESS. NOT ONLY HAVE ALL THE DRAWERS BEEN EMPTIED, BUT SEVERAL OF LEXIE'S PICTURES HAVE BEEN RIPPED FROM THE WALLS AND SMASHED. GLASS LITTERS THE FLOOR.LEXIE: Oh, God...
ABE AND LEXIE WALK INTO THE FILE ROOM. THIS ROOM LOOKS THE WORST. THERE ARE PAPERS EVERYWHERE, SO THICK THAT THE FLOOR CAN'T BE SEEN. LEXIE WALKS OVER TO A FILING CABINET AND KICKS IT.LEXIE: I can't believe this.
ABE: Lex...
LEXIE: I feel like a damn fool.
ABE: We had no way of knowing...
LEXIE: We should have known. It was just too easy. We were so happy to just take his money, we never even stopped to think...
ABE: We were excited at having a job.
LEXIE: Yeah. Some job. What are we going to do?
ABE: We'll pick ourselves up, and we'll get back to work. The first thing we need to do is clean up this mess.
LEXIE: (SIGHS) I know. It's just... this is embarrassing, Abe. We're supposed to be professionals, and we were lured away like a pair of beginners. I feel so stupid.
ABE: Lex, we're detectives, not psychics. We had no way of knowing. Lawrence Alamain is a pro.
LEXIE: Yeah, you gotta give him that. It looks like he got everything we had on him.
ABE: It looks like he got everything we had "period." I'd say we're back to square one.
LEXIE: Not quite square one. There's something he missed.
ABE: What's that?
LEXIE REACHES INTO HER PURSE AND PULLS OUT A FOLDED PIECE OF PAPER.LEXIE: John's mysterious phone number.
ABE HUGS HER.ABE: Lex, you are a wonder! We still have our best lead. And Alamain doesn't even have an idea what's going on.
THEY SMILE IN TRIUMPH AND BEGIN PICKING UP THE SCATTERED FILES.CUT TO: BO'S BOAT/DOCK. MUSIC BEGINS TO PLAY, STING'S "FRAGILE." AT THE END OF THE SLIP WHERE THE FANCY FACE IS BERTHED, WE SEE BO AND CARLY WHERE THEY'VE FALLEN. BO IS LYING ON HIS BACK, HIS HEAD AT AN AWKWARD ANGLE, CHIN TILTED UP. HE HAS HIT HIS HEAD ON A RAISED CONCRETE BIKE RACK, RIGHT AT THE BASE OF HIS SKULL. CARLY IS ATOP HIM. THERE IS A POOL OF BLOOD UNDER BO'S HEAD, AND HIS OUT-FLUNG ARM IS BLEEDING HEAVILY AS WELL. CARLY'S CLOTHES ARE BLOOD-SOAKED IN THE BACK, AND AS WE MOVE CLOSER TO HER FACE, WE SEE BLOOD TRICKLE FROM HER MOUTH. HOLD ON BO AND CARLY, AS IT BEGINS TO RAIN, A GENTLE SPRING DELUGE. AND OUT.
BO'S BOAT/DOCK. BO AND CARLY ARE LYING IN A POOL OF MINGLED BLOOD AND RAIN. FROM FURTHER DOWN ON THE DOCKS, WE HEAR SOMEONE APPROACH.JED: Always in the worst weather... you've got to go. I don't know why I put up with you...
A PASSERBY, JED, WALKS UP. HE'S WEARING A DARK OVER-COAT AND CARRYING AN UMBRELLA AGAINST THE FALLING RAIN. HE'S WALKING HIS DOG, A BEAUTIFUL DARK COLLIE.JED: (CONT'D) Ahh, but you're a good dog, you are... even with the nightly inconvenience of your walks...
JED WALKS PAST THE BOAT, THE DOG SNIFFS THE HULL OF THE FANCY FACE, AND WHINES.JED: (CONT'D) What's the matter, boy?
THE DOG WHINES LOUDER, AND CONTINUES TO SNIFF. HE GETS CLEARLY MORE AGITATED, AND BEGINS TO PULL THE MAN PAST THE BOAT, DOWN THE SIDE OF THE SLIP WHERE BO AND CARLY LIE.JED: (CONT'D) Hey, boy, what'cha up to? Quit pulling... I'm coming... you've never done.... (HE SEES BO AND CARLY) Oh, my God... (TO DOG) Sit, Prince, sit
PRINCE SITS NEAR BO AND BENDS TO LICK BO'S FACE. BO GROANS.JED: Oh, this looks bad, oh... Listen folks, just lay there, just relax, I'll find a phone, call 911, I'll be right back... Don't move... (TO PRINCE) Stay!
JED RUNS OFF TO FIND A PHONE. PRINCE LIES DOWN NEXT TO BO'S HAND, AND LICKS IT GENTLY. HOLD ON BO'S FACE.JANET: Come in.CUT TO: JANET'S OFFICE/CORRIDOR. JANET IS SEATED AT HER DESK, GOING OVER PAPERWORK. LAWRENCE KNOCKS ON THE DOOR.
LAWRENCE WALKS IN.LAWRENCE: Captain Yamada? Allow me to introduce myself, (HE EXTENDS HIS HAND) Lawrence Alamain.
JANET: Mr. Alamain. (STANDING AND TAKING HIS HAND) Was there something the duty officer couldn't help you with?
LAWRENCE: (SMOOTHLY) No, I simply wanted to meet the lovely new captain of the Salem PD.
JANET: Oh? And?
LAWRENCE: Well, since you seem to have a few moments...
JANET: I don't really...
LAWRENCE: (IGNORING HER) I am concerned about the criminal element in Salem...
JANET: Have you had a problem?
LAWRENCE: No, no, nothing like that. Although, as I'm sure you've heard, I am a very rich man, Captain Yamada. I fear it's only a matter of time before something happens.
JANET IS ANNOYED, BUT REMAINS OUTWARDLY PLEASANT.JANET: Then you don't have an actual crime to report?
LAWRENCE: No, but I would like to discuss beefing up the security around my home.
JANET: I'm certain a private security company could help you with that.
LAWRENCE: Splendid suggestion. Do you have any recommendations?
JANET: As you know, I am new to Salem, but I'm sure our Community Relations Office could help you.
JANET BEGINS TO USHER LAWRENCE TO THE DOOR, PLEASANTLY BUT FIRMLY.JANET: (CONT'D) Well, it was certainly very nice meeting you, Mr. Alamain. Thank you for stopping by.
LAWRENCE: Thank you, Captain.
JANET SHUTS THE DOOR ON LAWRENCE.JANET: Well now I know why Carver and Brady never got any work done. How could they with every Tom, Dick and Vanderbilt coming in whenever they feel like it?
GO TO: LAWRENCE IN THE CORRIDOR. HE LOOKS A LITTLE RUFFLED. SPEAKING SOFTLY TO HIMSELF.LAWRENCE: Now I can go on as planned. Who better to use an an alibi than the police captain?
LAWRENCE SUDDENLY LOOKS THOUGHTFUL. HE LOOKS BACK AT THE DOOR BEHIND HIM.LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) A captain who bears watching. The lovely Ms. Yamada is much too smart for my peace of mind.
LAWRENCE HEADS OUT OF THE POLICE STATION.TOM: So, you really think those new techniques will work here?CUT TO: SMALL NURSES' STATION/LOUNGE. TOM, BILL AND ALICE ARE SITTING IN THE LOUNGE DRINKING COFFEE OR JUICE. THEY HAVE OBVIOUSLY BEEN HERE A WHILE.
BILL: Well, I was skeptical, too, at first. But in Chicago, the management pretty much forced me into it. And I must admit, it seemed to work pretty well to me.
TOM: Hmm... That is something to think about...
BILL: And, of course, there's always the issue of the cost of hospital beds and equipment...
ALICE: Enough!
THE MEN LOOK AT HER, STARTLED.TOM: Dear?
ALICE: You two have been sitting there for (CONSULTS HER WATCH) almost two hours, discussing office politics and management. You are about to bore me to tears.
TOM: Alice!
ALICE: Well, it's true. There's more to running a place than books, journals, facts and figures.
BILL: Just what do you have up your sleeve?
ALICE: (INNOCENTLY) Absolutely nothing.
BILL: Uh huh.
ALICE: Why Bill Horton, I can't believe you'd use that tone of voice with your own mother. I am hurt that you would have so little faith in me. Truly hurt...
BILL: (STIFLING A LAUGH) I apologize, Mom. I should known better than to ever accuse you of having an ulterior motive. Besides, you won't tell me what you're up to till you're good and ready, so I may as well just give up.
ALICE: Bill!
TOM: Alice, Bill is right. Just what are you after?
ALICE: Humph. I believe Jonah would say I'm being double-teamed.
TOM: You and Jonah seem to be hitting it off quite well.
ALICE: He's a sweet boy. And don't go trying to change the subject on me, Tom.
TOM: I wasn't aware there was a subject under discussion...
ALICE: Well, there was. The subject was that there is more to running a business... or hospital... than what you see in the books.
BILL: Such as?
ALICE: People. You are going to be in charge of departments and units and they are made up of people.
BILL: And?
ALICE WALKS TO THE DOOR AND TRIES TO UNOBTRUSIVELY WAVE HER HANDKERCHIEF SO THAT IT CAN BE SEEN THROUGH THE WINDOW, AS TOM AND BILL STARE IN PUZZLEMENT.ALICE: I think you should take the time to meet the people.
A GROUP OF DOCTORS AND NURSES COME THROUGH THE DOOR WITH A GIANT COOKIE THAT SAYS 'WELCOME BACK DR. HORTON'. TOM AND BILL LAUGH AS ALICE LOOKS ON IN TRIUMPH.JOHN: Hey, kid, are you doing better than your old man over here?CUT TO: LOFT. THE LOFT IS LAVISHLY DECORATED FOR A ONE-YEAR OLD BIRTHDAY BASH. JOHN IS IN THE KITCHEN TRYING TO FROST A LARGE BIRTHDAY CAKE. THERE IS ICING DRIPPING ALL OVER THE PLACE AND JOHN IS VALIANTLY TRYING TO GET THE ICING ON THE CAKE INSTEAD OF HIMSELF. BRADY, WEARING A PARTY HAT, SITS IN A NEARBY HIGH CHAIR.
BRADY GIGGLES AND LOOKS WIDE-EYED AT JOHN, WHO SEEMS TO BE COVERED WITH FROSTING.JOHN: (CONT'D) Come on Brady, give me a break here, I never said I was Betty Crocker!
BRADY LAUGHING, SEEMS TO THINK THIS IS THE FUNNIEST THING HE HAS EVER SEEN.JOHN: (CONT'D) (GOING TOWARD HIM) So you think this is funny, huh? I'll get you!
JOHN GRABS BRADY AND SWINGS HIM IN THE AIR. THEN THE TWO SETTLE DOWN ON THE COUCH, TRYING NOT TO SIT ON THE PRESENTS WHICH COVER IT.JOHN: Hey there, Birthday boy, you sure are popular! Look at all these gifts... one from Grandpa Victor... one from Shawn and Caroline, one from Roman and Marlena, one from Mrs. Horton...
THERE IS A KNOCK AT THE DOOR. JOHN, HOLDING BRADY, RISES AND WALKS OVER TO OPEN THE DOOR. IT'S A DELIVERY MAN.DELIVERY MAN: Special delivery for John and Brady Black.
JOHN: That's us.
DELIVERY MAN: Could you sign here, please?
JOHN SIGNS.DELIVERY MAN: Thanks, this is for you. (HANDS JOHN A LARGE, HEAVY ENVELOPE)
JOHN: Wait...
JOHN PUTS BRADY INTO THE HIGH CHAIR, GRABS HIS WALLET, PULLS A BILL OUT AND TIPS THE DELIVERY MAN.DELIVERY MAN: Hey, thanks!
JOHN: You're welcome. We're celebrating.
DELIVERY MAN: I can see. Well... happy birthday.
JOHN CLOSES THE DOOR AND GOES BACK TO SIT ON THE SOFA.JOHN: Well, kid, this must be for you. Let's see what kind of goodies you got this time.
JOHN OPENS THE ENVELOPE, INSIDE THERE ARE TWO LARGE CERTIFICATES FROM THE INTERNATIONAL STAR REGISTRY AND A CARD, WHICH JOHN READS ALOUD: "TO MY SON ON HIS FIRST BIRTHDAY. TO MY HUSBAND, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY. I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU. ISABELLA."JOHN: (CONT'D) How... when... Oh... Izzy... You're still looking out for us. This must have been on that damned list of yours... the one you thought I didn't know you made.
JOHN EXAMINES THE CERTIFICATES.JOHN: (CONT'D) Brady, it says here that you and I now have stars... right next to your mother's...
TWO LARGE, HOME-MADE PAPER STARS FALL OUT OF THE CARD. THEY ARE HAND-LETTERED: "TO MY TWO STARS -- NOW WE'LL BE TOGETHER ALWAYS." JOHN BEGINS TO CRY. HE STANDS, PICKS UP BRADY AND WALKS TO THE WINDOW TO LOOK OUT..JOHN: (CONT'D) (LOOKING SKYWARD) Hey Brady, there we are... all together twinkling like one big happy family... We are together, you know. If not here on this earth, then up in the heavens... with your Mama.
HOLD ON JOHN'S FACE. AND OUT.
SMALL NURSES' STATION/LOUNGE. THE REMAINS OF THE COOKIE LIE IN THE BOX ON THE TABLE, AS BILL CHATS WITH AN EARNEST LOOKING ORDERLY. TOM WALKS OVER TO THE TRIUMPHANT ALICE.TOM: Well, I must admit, this was a stroke of genius.
ALICE: (INNOCENT) Of course it was. What did you expect? (SHE LIGHTLY KISSES HIM ON THE CHEEK AS HE LOOKS AT HER WITH AFFECTION)
THE DOOR OPENS AND KIMBERLY WALKS IN.KIMBERLY: What? Did someone have a party and forget to tell me?
ALICE: Kimberly! I had no idea you'd be here so late! Otherwise...
KIMBERLY: I know. It's all right, really. (RUBS HER FOREHEAD). I wanted to stay and work with one of my patients... She has a problem with night terrors...
ALICE: Do you think she'll be all right?
KIMBERLY: I just don't know... that's the hardest part of working with these kids... you never know. Some bounce right back, others never recover...
ALICE: Well, we all know she's getting the best care possible. And all the love...
KIMBERLY: Thanks.
THERE IS THE SOUND OF AN AMBULANCE ARRIVING. SEVERAL DOCTORS AND NURSES RUSH FROM THE LOUNGE AND TOWARDS EMERGENCY. TOM, ALICE, BILL, AND KIMBERLY FOLLOW AT A MORE LEISURELY PACE. THEY WALK INTO E.R. AS THE PARAMEDICS RUSH IN.MEDIC1: Move it! We've got some major damage here! Gunshot wounds, sucking chest wound -- bad! We need a surgeon now!
BILL RUSHES FORWARD AND BENDS OVER THE FIGURE ON THE BLOOD-COVERED GURNEYS.BILL: Prep an O.R. stat! I need an airway... She's not breathing... Adrenalin! Now!
BILL PLACES A PLASTIC BAG OVER THE CHEST WOUND AND PRESSES DOWN AS HE RUNS ALONG SIDE THE GURNEY TOWARD THE O.R. THEY PASS KIMBERLY, TOM AND ALICE. THEY LOOK AT THE WOMAN ON THE GURNEY.KIMBERLY: Oh my God....(MOANS). Mrs. Horton?
ALICE: (PALE WHITE) That was... that was Carly...
TOM: Dear Lord... (TO SECOND PARAMEDIC) What happened?
MEDIC2: We don't know. The police should be at the scene by now. All we know is they were both shot.
KIMBERLY: (WEAKLY) Both? Who... who else?
MEDIC2: I'm sorry... I don't know, ma'am. A man. He's already in E.R.
KIMBERLY: Dr. Horton?
TOM: (PLACES A REASSURING HAND ON HER SHOULDER) I'll go in and check...
KIMBERLY: Thank you...
ALICE: Kimberly...
KIMBERLY: Oh, please don't let it be Bo... please...
ALICE: If it is... I'm sure they're doing their best... for him and Carly.
THEY STAND FOR A FEW MOMENTS. KIMBERLY IS STARING OFF INTO SPACE, CRYING SILENTLY AND STOICALLY, AS ALICE STANDS NEXT TO HER. TOM COMES OUT OF THE EXAMINING ROOM, LOOKING GRIM.TOM: Kim...
KIMBERLY: It's Bo, isn't it?
TOM: Yes, it is. They have to operate on him too...
KIMBERLY: Will he be all right?
TOM: I wish I could say. But I just don't know. He's lost a lot of blood, and it looks like his skull may be fractured. We'll know better once they get the bullet out and get a good look at him.
KIMBERLY: Oh, God. This just... I... I have to call my parents. I have to let them know what's going on... excuse me, please...
AS KIMBERLY RUSHES OFF TO THE PHONE, ALICE TAKES TOM'S HAND.ALICE: Tom, how does he really look?
TOM: I honestly don't know. It all depends on how much blood he lost, and the extent of that head wound. I didn't want to give her false hope.
ALICE: I understand. It looks like now all we can do is pray.
TOM: (GRIM) Yes, that would be an excellent idea right now... Especially for Carly.
HOLD ON TOM'S FACE.JACK: I'd say you were inspired.CUT TO: JACK/JENNIFER BEDROOM. JACK IS LYING IN BED WATCHING JENNIFER AS SHE WALKS AROUND THE ROOM, PICKING UP THE SCATTERED CLOTHES, THE TOWEL, ETC. SHE IS HUMMING "WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL."
JENNIFER: You weren't so bad yourself.
JACK: Gee, thanks, don't overwhelm me with kind words.
JENNIFER: I don't want you to get a swelled head.
JACK: Jennifer, at this point, I'm too exhausted to get a swelled anything.
JENNIFER: Jack! (THROWS THE TOWEL AT HIM)
JACK REACHES OUT, GRABS JENNIFER AND PULLS HER ONTO THE BED. HE KISSES HER, THEN HOLDS HER IN HIS EMBRACE.JACK: Jennifer, I have to tell you. When I got up this morning, I never really believed I'd end up here, like this... with you.
JENNIFER: Was that a complaint? (SNUGGLING CLOSER)
JACK: Hardly. I just wanted to say... to tell you...
JENNIFER: Yes?
JACK: How happy I am.
JENNIFER: Jack Deveraux admitting to being happy. I'll call Vern, let's stop the presses.
JACK: I'm serious.
JENNIFER: I know you are. I'm sorry to tease you. But you're usually so afraid to admit to happiness.
JACK: That's because somehow it seems that every time I'm happy, something happens to take it away.
JENNIFER: Not this time...
JACK: Promise...
JENNIFER: Promise...
JENNIFER PULLS JACK'S HEAD DOWN TO KISS HIM. THEY ARE INTERRUPTED BY THE RINGING PHONE.JACK: Let the machine pick it up.
JENNIFER: What if it's important.
JACK: What could be more important than this?
JENNIFER: Jack, we really should get that. (JACK KEEPS KISSING HER). Besides, I thought you were exhausted...
JACK: I think you inspired me this time...
THEY START TO KISS AGAIN, BUT THE PHONE KEEPS RINGING.JACK: Damn... the machine must be off.
JENNIFER: Go ahead, answer it, I can wait... but not too long.
JACK PICKS UP THE PHONE, TWO-WAY. JENNIFER STARTS TICKLING HIM, KISSING HIS NECK, HIS CHEST, TRYING TO DISTRACT HIM.JACK: Dev... Jennifer, stop that... Dever... Jennifer! (CLEARING HIS THROAT) Deveraux, here.
VERN: Jack is that you?
JACK: Of course it's me, Vern.
JENNIFER'S EFFORTS TO DISTRACT JACK GROW MORE HEATED.JACK: (CONT'D) Vern, this had better be damned important.
VERN: It is. Hunt, our Police beat reporter just called.
WE CAN'T SEE JENNIFER, BUT CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT SHE'S DOING, AS WE WATCH JACK'S FACE AS HE STRUGGLES FOR COMPOSURE.JACK: (VOICE BREAKING) And...
VERN: Jack... is's bad, there's been a shooting.
JACK: A shooting... (TO JENNIFER) Jennifer...
JENNIFER IMMEDIATELY SENSES JACK'S SERIOUS TONE AND SITS UP, STUDYING HIS FACE.VERN: It's Carly and Bo... We don't have many details, someone found them on the pier. They're at the hospital now. I thought you'd want to know...
JACK: Thanks, Vern. I... I have to talk to Jennifer.
VERN: Good-luck.
JACK: I'm going to need it.
JACK HANGS UP THE PHONE.JACK: (CONT'D) That was Vern.
JENNIFER: I heard. What's wrong. You said something about a shooting.
JACK: Hunt called it in. There was a shooting down on the pier.
JENNIFER: And...
JACK: And... I don't know how to tell you this, but it was Carly and Bo. They've been shot.

JOHN HANGS UP THE PHONE.CARRIE: What's happened?
JOHN: It's bad pumpkin. I don't have details... but there was a shooting and Bo and Carly were involved.
CARRIE: Oh no...
JOHN: I'm going straight to the hospital.
CARRIE: Then I'm coming with you.
JOHN: Let me call the sitter and we're outta here...
HOLD ON JOHN'S FACE AS HE REALIZES HE JUST USED ONE OF BO'S FAVORITE EXPRESSIONS.IVAN: Madame, please, try to calm down.CUT TO: ALAMAIN MANSION/LIVING ROOM. VIVIAN IS PACING FRANTICALLY. IVAN IS STANDING NEARBY, WORRIED.
VIVIAN: Don't tell me to calm down, Ivan! How can you expect me to calm down when...
THEY BOTH TURN AT THE SOUND OF THE FRONT DOOR OPENING. THEY RUSH INTO THE FOYER. LAWRENCE ENTERS.LAWRENCE: (REMOVING HIS COAT) Well, this is quite a welcome...
VIVIAN: Lawrence, it's Nikki!
LAWRENCE: (HEADING TOWARDS THE STAIRS) What is it? Did he have another nightmare?
VIVIAN: No, he's gone!
LAWRENCE: What do you mean, gone? Gone where?
IVAN: He seems to have run away, sir.
LAWRENCE: Are you sure? Maybe he is just hiding. Go and check the rest of the house, Ivan.
IVAN: We've already looked everywhere, sir.
LAWRENCE: (ANGRILY) Well, check it again!
IVAN EXITS. VIVIAN GOES OVER TO THE WINDOW.VIVIAN: I think it was the nightmare that did it, Lawrence. He was so frightened of Carly taking him away...
LAWRENCE: You don't think Carly abducted him, do you?
VIVIAN: I don't see how she could have. I sat with him until he fell asleep. I just came downstairs for a few minutes and when I went back to check on him he was gone...
VIVIAN GOES OVER TO THE WINDOW AND LOOKS OUT.VIVIAN: It's starting to rain. He's only got his pajamas on.
IVAN ENTERS, VERY PALE.IVAN: Madame.
VIVIAN: What is it, Ivan?
IVAN: It's your room, Madame. Someone has been going through your dresser and... your gun is missing.
VIVIAN: Oh my God! You don't think...
LAWRENCE: Now really, Vivian. How could you possibly...
THERE IS A KNOCK ON THE FRONT DOOR. IVAN OPENS IT AND NICHOLAS, WEARING WET PAJAMAS AND A WINDBREAKER COLLAPSES INTO HIS ARMS. OUT ON NICHOLAS.
JANET YAMADA'S OFFICE. JANET IS SITTING IN HER OFFICE. SHE HAS BROUGHT IN A PORTABLE CD PLAYER AND IS TAPPING HER FEET TO ZACHARY RICHARD'S "BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS" AS SHE HUMS ALONG AND READS A LETTER FROM HOME.JANET: All right! So Vangie is finally getting that M.A. Way to go, little sis! (FLIPPING PAGES OF DESK CALENDAR) Okay... note to self -- take time off for graduation ceremony and buy little sister one hell of a present!
THERE IS A KNOCK AT THE DOOR.JANET: (CONT'D) Yes?
AN OFFICER AWKWARDLY POKES IN HIS HEAD.OFFICER: Captain?
JANET: Well? What is it? Come on in man, I won't bite you.
OFFICER: Yes, ma'am.
THE OFFICER STEPS IN AS JANET TURNS OFF CD PLAYER.JANET: So?
OFFICER: We just got a call from the hospital, ma'am.
JANET: Hospital? What happened?
OFFICER: Well, ma'am, it appears there was a shooting... Bo Brady, and his fiancée, Dr. Manning.
JANET: How bad is it?
OFFICER: They're both in surgery, last we heard. It looks like Brady's probably gonna be okay. But Dr. Manning... Well, the grapevine says she's not looking too good.
JANET: This is... (BEAT) Okay, what do we have on the shooting so far?
OFFICER: Not much, ma'am. They were down on the pier, right before it started raining.
JANET: Rain. Great. Just what we need. I assume Forensics is on the scene?
OFFICER: Yes, ma'am. When they got the word there was an officer down, they got their butts right out there.
JANET: Hmmm... Good, maybe we'll be able to get a lead. I still don't like it. An officer shot my first week on the job. I want to be kept appraised on every phase of this investigation. In fact, I think I'll head down there right now and check out the situation myself.
JANET LEANS DOWN UNDER HER DESK AND TAKES OUT AN UMBRELLA, WALKS PAST THE OFFICER AND OUT THE DOOR.JACK: Well, damn it, Hunt, is that all you know? She's still in surgery is no answer. The hell with it. I'll be there within the hour. Good-bye.CUT TO: JACK/JENNIFER LIVING ROOM. JENNIFER AND JACK HAVE OBVIOUSLY HASTILY DRESSED. THEY'RE WEARING JEANS, SNEAKERS, ETC. JACK HANGS UP THE PHONE.JENNIFER: No word?
JACK: It seems like nothing's changed.
JENNIFER: That could be good...
JACK: It could be... Are you almost ready?
JENNIFER: Yes. Did you talk to Jo?
JACK: I did. She said Vern called her. She said she'd come watch Abby. I told her to meet us at the hospital instead.
JENNIFER: Good. She should be with her family.
JACK: Well, Bo is an in-law. Steve was married to Bo's sister. And Jo knew you'd want to be with Carly.
JENNIFER: Oh Jack, why did this have to happen?
JACK: I don't know, Jennifer.
JENNIFER: She and Bo were going to get married. She'd found her son. She was so happy. It's just not fair.
JACK: I know it's a cliche, but life isn't fair.
JENNIFER: But it should be. Carly and Bo were meant to be together.
JACK: And they will be.
JENNIFER: Do you really think so?
JACK: For your sake, I hope so.
JENNIFER: And I feel so guilty...
JACK: Why?
JENNIFER: I was so happy that you were back. That we were talking, that we had dealt with our problems... And now all I can think about is Carly lying there bleeding...
JACK TAKES JENNIFER IN HIS ARMS.JACK: Jennifer, you can't think that way. You can't feel guilty about us. Wouldn't Carly want you to be happy?
JENNIFER: Yes...
JACK: And aren't you happy I'm here and we can face this together?
JENNIFER: Oh yes, I don't know what I'd do if you weren't here.
JACK PULLS BACK AND LOOKS AT HER.JACK: You'd be fine...
JENNIFER: No I wouldn't.
JACK: Yes, you would. I've always known you were the strong one. You know, you're my anchor...
JENNIFER: Well, right now I don't feel strong, I feel like my world has just been torn apart.
JACK: Jennifer, you can hold on to me. I am here for you. I will always be here for you.
JENNIFER: I love you.
JACK: And I love you. (BEAT) Now are you ready?
JENNIFER: As ready as I'll ever be.
JACK: Then let's go to the hospital and find out what's really going on.
JENNIFER: Jack, what if...
JACK: Jennifer, one step at a time.
JENNIFER: One step... And maybe a prayer...
JACK PICKS UP THE DIAPER BAG, JENNIFER PICKS UP ABIGAIL AND THEY HEAD OUT THE DOOR.SHAWN: Kimmie, what the hell's going on? Bo's hurt, and Carly, too? What's happening?CUT TO: SMALL NURSES' STATION/LOUNGE. SHAWN AND CAROLINE ENTER FROM ELEVATOR. TOM AND KIMBERLY ARE STANDING BY THE DESK.
TOM: Carly is in surgery right now. She came in looking fairly serious, apparently a gun-shot wound.
CAROLINE: Gun shot?
TOM: Seems the bullet went through Carly and hit Bo. He's in surgery, too, but in less critical condition. He has an arm wound, and he hit the back of his head...
JOHN AND CARRIE EXIT THE ELEVATOR.JOHN: How are they?
TOM: I was just telling Shawn and Caroline, they're both in surgery for bullet wounds, but Bo's in much better shape than Carly.
CARRIE: How did it happen? How did they get shot? Was Uncle Bo on duty?
CAROLINE: I don't think so... I think I remember him mentioning he was off today...
JOHN: Bo and Carly were working with Abe and Lexie on getting custody of Nikki... I'd better let them know what's going on.
JOHN GOES TO THE PHONES.SHAWN: If John thinks it had to do with the custody case, it must have been that slime Lawrence Alamain that did this...
CAROLINE: Now, Shawn, we don't know that for sure...
SHAWN: Who else in this town had it in for my boy? Who else would stoop to shooting a darlin' woman like Carly? I tell you, it had to have been Alamain...
ALICE: Now, Shawn, we must let the police handle the investigation. Our job is to make sure and be here for Bo and Carly, and to let the family know.
TOM: I'll go and see if there's anything new...
TOM LEAVES.CAROLINE: Speaking of that, I should let Roman and Marlena know, and Kayla...
CAROLINE WALKS TO THE PHONES.KIMBERLY: (SUDDENLY) Oh, my God, where's Shawn-Douglas??
CARRIE: Aunt Kim, oh, no! He's probably still at the boat, and he'll panic if he wakes up and Bo and Carly aren't there...
KIMBERLY: I'll drive over to the boat and pick him up right now. Will you tell Mom and Pop where I've gone?
ALICE: Good idea, dear. We'll take care of things here, just you drive safely and take care of Shawn-Douglas.
GO TO: CAROLINE ON THE PHONE, ONE-WAY, TO ROMAN.CAROLINE: Oh, good, Roman, it'll be good to have you here. I'm sure Bo will be glad you're on your way... no, still in surgery..... are you sure you don't mind taking a cab? I'm not sure where we'll all be..... Ok, see you soon, our love to Marlena and the twins... Bye.
CAROLINE HANGS UP, PAUSES A MOMENT, THINKS ABOUT SOMETHING. SHE THEN PICKS UP THE PHONE AND DIALS A NUMBER...CAROLINE: Hello, may I speak to Victor Kiriakis please? Caroline Brady..... Hello, Victor.... yes, it's bad news, I'm afraid...
GO TO: SHAWN AND CARRIE AS JOHN JOINS THEM.JOHN Abe and Lexie will be right over. I wonder what the police have found.
SHAWN: I hope it's something to prove that Alamain did this!
CARRIE: I just hope they're ok, they've just got to be ok.
CAROLINE RETURNS FROM THE PHONE.CAROLINE: Kayla and Marcus will be here as soon as they can, and Roman's flying out from Colorado first thing in the morning. Marlena is staying with the children, but sends her love.
ALICE: It will be nice to see Kayla again, after all this time, but I wish it were under happier circumstances.
CARRIE: What do we do now?
ALICE: Well, dear, we wait and hope, and send all our prayers for Carly's life.
HOLD ON ALICE'S FACE. AND OUT.
ALAMAIN MANSION/LIVING ROOM. LAWRENCE AND VIVIAN ARE SITTING ON THE COUCH WITH NICHOLAS BETWEEN THEM. NICHOLAS IS WRAPPED IN A BLANKET. IVAN ENTERS WITH A CUP OF HOT CHOCOLATE.VIVIAN: Nikki, darling. We were worried sick. Why were you outside?
NICHOLAS BEGINS TO CRY.LAWRENCE: We're not angry, Nikki. We're just upset. You won't get in any trouble. Just tell us what happened.
VIVIAN: Here, Ivan has made you some hot chocolate. Have some of that. Calm yourself.
NICHOLAS HAS A FEW SIPS AND PUTS THE CUP DOWN. HE PUTS HIS HEAD ON VIVIAN'S SHOULDER.NICHOLAS: I was so scared.
LAWRENCE: Scared of what? Did you have another nightmare?
NICHOLAS: I guess that's what it was. Carly kept trying to make me go with her... and Aunt Viv was crying.
VIVIAN: (HUGGING HIM) Why didn't you call me, sweetheart? I would have chased the bad dreams away.
NICHOLAS: I didn't want to be a baby. I wanted to make them go away myself.
LAWRENCE: So what did you do?
NICHOLAS: I took Aunt Viv's gun so I could scare Carly and she would go away and leave us alone.
LAWRENCE: (TURNING PALE) Nikki, what did you do then?
NICHOLAS: I went to the boat. When I got there...
LAWRENCE: Yes, when you got to the boat...
NICHOLAS: There was an ambulance. I heard the man talking on the radio. He said they were taking Bo and Carly to the hospital. There was blood everywhere.
VIVIAN LOOKS AT LAWRENCE OVER NICHOLAS' HEAD. SHE HUGS HIM TIGHTER.LAWRENCE: What happened then, Nikki?
NICHOLAS: I got really scared. And all the blood... I ran home...
VIVIAN: What did you do with the gun, sweetheart?
NICHOLAS LOOKS FRIGHTENED.NICHOLAS: I... I don't know where it is. I must have dropped it. I'll never touch it again, Aunt Viv, I swear!
VIVIAN: Hush, hush, darling. Don't you worry about it, we'll find it.
LAWRENCE STANDS UP AND TAKES NICHOLAS INTO HIS ARMS.LAWRENCE: It's over now. The important thing is that you're home and you're all right. But I think it's time for bed now.
NICHOLAS: (STILL SNIFFLING) Will you stay with me until I go to sleep?
LAWRENCE: Sure I will. And Auntie Vivian, too.
VIVIAN: (STANDING) I'm right here, Nikki. I'll always be right here.
HOLD ON VIVIAN AND LAWRENCE EXCHANGING FRIGHTENED LOOKS.JANET: (TO NEAREST OFFICER SHE RECOGNIZES) Peters, where's the forensics team leader... I need to talk to him immediately.CUT TO: BO'S BOAT/DOCK. IT'S STILL RAINING, BUT MORE LIGHTLY. THE DECK IS CRAWLING WITH SALEM PD OFFICERS AND THE FORENSICS TEAM. THE BOAT AND SLIP ARE CORDONED OFF, MORE OFFICERS STAND AT THE BARRIER KEEPING ONLOOKERS OUT. AN UNMARKED CAR, WITH REMOVABLE LIGHTS ON TOP, PULLS UP. JANET GETS OUT OF THE CAR, HURRIES TO THE BOAT.
PETERS: That's Morgan, (POINTS) the guy in the grey overcoat...
JANET: Thanks...
JANET WALKS TO MORGAN, WHO IS WATCHING ANOTHER OFFICER BAG BO'S GUN AND HOLSTER.JANET: (CONT'D) Morgan... I'm Captain Yamada, we haven't had a chance to meet yet...
MORGAN: Nice to meet you, though I would have preferred different circumstances.
JANET: You and me both. You got anything here?
MORGAN: It's damned difficult because of the rain, but it does appear that the shooter may have used Brady's own gun. We found his holster here on the seat, empty.
JANET: I.A.'s going to be interested in that bit of information. Anything else?
MORGAN: Not really. We got here just as the ambulances did, but we were able to take a quick look at the victims before they were moved. Looks like the shooter stood either here (INDICATING WHERE THE HOLSTER WAS FOUND, AT THE VERY FRONT OF THE BOAT, ON THE SEAT-CUSHION) or there, on the dock right in front of the boat. We'll be able to tell more when we get the Doctor's report on the trajectory and penetration.
JANET: Bullet?
MORGAN: No, we didn't find it. My guess, it's still in Brady. Looked to me like the bullet went right through Dr. Manning and took Brady out, too. Don't think he's hurt as bad as she is. They were probably standing close together when the bullet hit, and it knocked the doctor into Brady, and then him into the bike-stand. Pretty gory scene, even with the rain.
JANET: Did the paramedics give any prognosis?
MORGAN: They did mention that Dr. Manning was hurt pretty bad. It appeared the biggest concern with Brady was the head injury, concussion, and possible trauma to the neck. Didn't look good...
JANET: Ahhh, what a way to start a job... an Officer shot off duty...
MORGAN: And probably with his own gun. We'll dust the holster, boat and railing for prints, but the rain makes it unlikely we'll get anything usable. Plus this doesn't look like a random shooting, so the perp probably wore gloves, anyway. We'll do what we can...
JANET: Thanks, Morgan... get a full report to me as soon as it's available...
MORGAN: Count on it...
GO TO: THE POLICE LINE NEAR THE BOAT, AN OFFICER IS ATTEMPTING TO DETAIN A NEWLY-ARRIVED AND FRANTIC KIMBERLY BRADY.OFFICER: Ma'am, this is a police line, I've been instructed not to let anyone cross...
KIMBERLY: (LOUDLY) You don't understand, I'm Kimberly Brady... Bo's sister... his son could be on that boat...
JANET WALKS OVER, DRAWN BY THE COMMOTION.JANET: Officer (LOOKS AT NAME TAG IMPATIENTLY) ahh, Larsen... what's the problem here?
LARSEN: This woman...
KIMBERLY: (INTERRUPTS) Are you in charge here? I'm Kimberly Brady, Bo Brady's sister, and I demand to be let on that boat!
JANET: I'm Captain Yamada, Ms. Brady, and as you can see, we're a little busy here...
KIMBERLY: Captain Yamada, I have good reason to believe my 6 year-old nephew is aboard that boat, and I'm going in to check. Let me through!
JANET: Larsen, let her by... (TO KIMBERLY) Come on, let's see if anyone's seen him...
JANET AND KIMBERLY WALK QUICKLY TO THE BOAT, JANET WALKS BACK TO MORGAN.JANET: Morgan, has anyone been inside the boat yet?
MORGAN: Not yet, with the rain and all, we figured we'd better get the outside work done first...
KIMBERLY: Has anyone seen a little boy??
MORGAN: No, not that I know of...
KIMBERLY: Oh, God...
KIMBERLY PUSHES PAST JANET AND MORGAN, WHO FOLLOW HER INTO THE BOAT'S INTERIOR. THEY HEAR KIMBERLY'S GASP, AS THEY LOOK DOWN AND SEE BLOOD ON THE FLOOR OUTSIDE SHAWN-D'S DOOR. KIMBERLY PUSHES THE HALF-OPEN DOOR COMPLETELY OPEN, AND RUSHES INTO THE ROOM.KIMBERLY: (STIFLES A SHRIEK) Oh, God, no... Shawn-D!
WE SEE SHAWN-DOUGLAS LYING ON HIS BED, THE COVERS RUMPLED AT HIS FEET. HE'S ON HIS SIDE, FACING AWAY FROM THE DOOR AND THERE'S A SMALL POOL OF BLOOD UNDER HIS HEAD. KIMBERLY RUNS TO HIS SIDE, AND PUTS OUT HER ARMS TO PICK HIM UP. JANET CATCHES KIMBERLY AND RESTRAINS HER.JANET: Kimberly, don't... We don't know how badly he's injured...
JANET THRUSTS A SOBBING KIMBERLY TO MORGAN AND KNEELS BY SHAWN-D. JANET TAKES SHAWN-D'S HAND.JANET: Pulse slow but steady, he's breathing ok... possible trauma to neck, head injury... Who the hell would hurt a child? Morgan! Go topside and tell them to call another ambulance, top priority. Get radio contact with the paramedics and describe what we've got here. Bleeding appears to have stopped... can't tell if he's comatose or just passed out from the blood loss... Go, Morgan!
MORGAN QUICKLY LEAVES.KIMBERLY: Is he... is he...
JANET: No, I think he's just passed out. His pulse and breathing are pretty steady, and the ambulance will be here in no time. Here take his hand, keep a finger on his pulse... don't touch his head... He's going to be ok...
KIMBERLY: (NEARLY BREAKING DOWN) All this... all this... first Bo, and Carly, now Shawn-D, sweet baby boy... (TO SHAWN-DOUGLAS) You'll be ok, now, sweetie... you've got to hang on so you can give your Daddy and Carly a big hug when this terrible night is over.... Just a little while and you'll be at the hospital, with your Daddy and Grandma and Grandpa... (SOBS, BUT CATCHES HERSELF) It's going to be ok, Shawn-D, it's gonna be fine...
HOLD ON KIMBERLY'S TEAR-STREAKED FACE. AND OUT.
SMALL NURSES' STATION/LOUNGE. SHAWN IS PACING THE ROOM AS CAROLINE SITS IN A CHAIR, HER HANDS CLASPED AS IF IN PRAYER. ALICE IS NEXT TO HER. THE ELEVATOR DOOR OPENS AND JACK AND JENNIFER WALK IN, ABIGAIL IN JACK'S ARMS. THEY IMMEDIATELY SEE THE BRADYS.JENNIFER: We came as soon as we heard...
JACK: How are they?
CAROLINE: We don't know anything yet.
JENNIFER: But you must. How's Carly? And Bo, is he going to be okay?
ALICE: (RISING TO HUG JENNIFER) I'm sorry dear, but we don't know. At the moment all we can do is pray...
JENNIFER: Oh, Grandma...
JACK REACHES OUT AND GENTLY TOUCHES JENNIEFR'S SHOULDER.JACK: (CLEARING HIS THROAT) Vern said there was a shooting. Do we know what happened yet?
ALICE: No, all we know is they were both shot and the police are there now. Kim went to get Shawn-Douglas, she may be able to tell us more.
JACK: They were both shot? Bo's a cop, but Carly...
THE ELEVATOR DOOR OPENS AND JO WALKS OUT. SHE IS OBVIOUSLY DISTRAUGHT.JO: Is there any news?
JACK: No... not yet.
JO: Oh.
JO TAKES A FEW BREATHS TO CALM HERSELF, AND CROSSES TO THE SOFA, WHERE SHE SITS NEXT TO CAROLINE.JO: Caroline...
CAROLINE LOOKS UP. HER EYES ARE RED AND SWOLLEN.CAROLINE: Yes...
JO: (TAKES CAROLINE'S HAND IN BOTH OF HER OWN) I am so sorry. I... I know what you must be going through right now...
CAROLINE: Jo...
JO: I remember the night Steve died... all the waiting, the hoping, the wondering, the not knowing...
CAROLINE: I remember, too. And Kayla wouldn't leave his side...
JO: Your daughter loved my son very much...
THE E.R. RESIDENT, DR. RYAN, ENTERS AS EVERYONE LOOKS UP.RYAN: Mr. and Mrs. Brady, your son is currently in recovery. The surgery went fine, there were no complications.
CAROLINE: Thank God. May we see him?
RYAN: Not yet, he's unconscious.
SHAWN: I thought you said he was all right...
RYAN: He's stable. But he had a punctured artery, he's lost a lot of blood.
SHAWN: An artery... how...
RYAN: The bullet fractured his humerus and lodged in his arm just above the elbow.
CAROLINE: His arm? Is it...
RYAN: We don't believe there's any permanent damage to his arm. Right now, the major problem is the head injury.
SHAWN: He was shot in the head, too?
RYAN: No, it seems he fell after he was shot. He hit the back of his head (RYAN TOUCHES THE BASE OF HIS SKULL TO ILLUSTRATE) and there is a hairline fracture.
CAROLINE: A fracture... Is it serious?
RYAN: It could be. There's no sign of swelling, but he also hasn't regained consciousness. We're keeping him under constant observation, but until he wakes up, we really won't know the extent of the damage.
JENNIFER: What about Carly?
RYAN: Who?
JENNIFER: Dr. Carly Manning. She was brought in at the same time as Bo.
RYAN: Oh, yes, the chest wound. She's still in surgery.
JACK PUTS HIS ARM AROUND JENNIFER.JACK: Thank you for letting us know...
RYAN: I need to get back to E.R., but we'll keep you informed of any changes.
SHAWN: Thank you.
RYAN EXITS.CAROLINE: Shawn, what are we going to tell Bo if he wakes up and asks for Carly?
SHAWN: I don't know, I just don't know...
SUDDENLY, THE ELEVATOR DOORS OPEN AND A GURNEY BEARING SHAWN-DOUGLAS IS WHEELED IN. KIMBERLY IS RIGHT BEHIND IT. THE PARAMEDICS ARE SHOUTING INSTRUCTIONS TO THE ON-DUTY DOCTORS, WHILE THE FAMILY WATCHES IN HORROR.KIMBERLY: Oh, Papa, he looks so... so small... so helpless...
CAROLINE: Kimmy, what happened?
KIMBERLY: I'm don't know. Shawn-D has a big cut, on the back of his head, his little pillow was all bloody (SHE BREAKS DOWN)
SHAWN: (TAKES KIMBERLY IN HIS ARMS) Hush, darlin', the doctors will take fine care of our boy... he'll be fine...
ALICE COMES DOWN THE HALL AND WALKS OVER TO SHAWN, CAROLINE AND KIMBERLY.ALICE: What's wrong with Shawn-Douglas?
CAROLINE: Kimmy said the back of his head was cut, and all bloody. What could have happened? How could this have happened?
ALICE: I think I'd better call Julie, so she and Doug know what's going on... Doug will be frantic when he hears something's happened to his only grandson.
SHAWN: That's a good idea, Alice...
CAROLINE: Yes, thank you for thinking of letting them know... I just can't seem to keep my thoughts clear...
ALICE: (HUGS CAROLINE) Darling, that's understandable. Just you hang on, everything's going to be fine...
ALICE WALKS TO THE PHONES. ABE AND LEXIE EXIT THE ELEVATOR. GO TO: JOHN, ABE AND LEXIE.LEXIE: Any word?
JOHN: No...
ABE: I just want to know who's responsible for all this.
JOHN: You and me both, pal.
GO TO: THE LARGE GROUP MILLING AROUND. CARRIE WALKS TO WHERE KIMBERLY, SHAWN AND CAROLINE STAND, SHAWN HUGS HER, THEN WALKS TO WHERE ABE, JOHN AND LEXIE ARE. STAY ON CARRIE, KIMBERLY AND CAROLINE.CARRIE: (SOBBING) Who could want to hurt Uncle Bo and Carly? And Shawn-D... What's going on with the world? Crazy men with acid (TOUCHES HER FACE), wonderful people getting shot, little children hurt...
CARRIE STARTS CRYING HARDER, KIMBERLY AND CAROLINE BOTH PUT THEIR ARMS AROUND HER. GO TO: ABE, LEXIE, JOHN, SHAWN.SHAWN: Well, if I had to make a guess, I'd say that this was the work of none other than Lawrence Alamain. No offense to you, John, but that man is evil enough to do something' like this...
JOHN: No offense taken, Shawn, in fact, I'm inclined to agree with you. Who else had the means, and the motivation? He was livid when Bo and Carly wanted to get custody of Nikki...
LEXIE: He sure was. And Carly was really shook up that day he threatened her.
SHAWN: That man threatened our Carly? Why, we outta go arrest him now! I'd like to get my hands on him...
ABE: I think we're on to something, all right. I think the shooting, and the break-in at the office must be related, and everything points right in Lawrence's direction.
JOHN: Break in?
THE ELEVATOR DOORS OPEN AND JANET EXITS. SHE STANDS NEAR THIS GROUP, QUIETLY LISTENING.LEXIE: Yes, Carver and Carver got taken in, I'm afraid...
ABE: We took an assignment from a guy who wanted us to guard his coin collection during a sale. We went to the address, miles out of town, and it ended up being a condemned house. By the time we put it all together and went back to the office, it'd already been ransacked.
JOHN: Did they get everything?
LEXIE: We didn't have time to check, but it looked like they'd been pretty thorough. One good thing, though, I still had the number you gave us in my pocket. The intruder didn't get that.
JOHN: Good. And what about this so-called "coin collector?" Got any info on him?
ABE: The guy paid in cash, so we don't have a check or credit card to trace...
JANET WALKS UP, ENTERS CONVERSATION.JANET: You say Carver and Carver was burglarized?
ABE: Yes, tonight. All the files were ransacked, and it looks like the ones missing are on our investigation into Lawrence Alamain.
JANET: Means of entry?
LEXIE: They cut the door glass, and opened the door. Then it looks like they dumped out every file and record in the place, and took what they wanted.
JOHN: Obviously, Lawrence sent the decoy to keep Abe and Lexie occupied, and then took care of his files, and possibly even the shooting. I assume you'll be bringing him in for questioning?
SHAWN: Questioning? He should be thrown in jail tonight for what he's done!
JANET: Look, I know you are all under a great deal of stress, but I'm only going to warn you once.
LEXIE: Warn us?
JANET: You are not to play vigilante in this situation. There will be no harassment of Lawrence Alamain, or any of his family or servants. This is real life, not some comic book, and you are not authorized to handle this, the police are.
ABE: Listen, I was Captain of the Salem PD. I've probably been a cop longer than you've been out of the academy, don't you lecture to me about police procedure.
JOHN: The priority here is to find and prosecute whoever did this to Bo, Carly and Shawn-D. If we have to step on a few police toes to get the job done, we will. I was a cop once, too, and I know how it works...
JANET: I'm perfectly aware of your histories with the Salem PD. Do I need to remind you that you are now private citizens? You have no authorization to do any more than your PI work.
ABE: Understood, Captain Yamada. But the Salem PD better be all over this case, or I'll make a citizen's complaint so fast...
JANET: Believe me, I want to get whoever did all this. But I'm going to do this by the book, and with no interference from PI's or ex-cops.
JANET WALKS AWAY, TO CONFER WITH A FEW OTHER OFFICERS NEARBY. JOHN, ABE, SHAWN AND LEXIE CONTINUE TO TALK, WHILE WE SEE THAT ALICE HAS JOINED CARRIE, CAROLINE, AND KIMBERLY. JO, JACK AND JENNIFER COME WALKING DOWN THE HALL, TALKING TOGETHER.JENNIFER: I just don't understand this... why would anyone want to hurt Carly and Bo? Maybe it was an accident?
JACK: That could be, but what about what happened to Shawn-Douglas? Obviously, the boy got in the way of something... or someone...
JO: This is just so awful... (LOOKING AT THE BRADYS) All these dear, sweet people and the ones they love are hurt and in danger...
JENNIFER: Carly just has to be all right... and Bo and Shawn-D... this is all just so... so... (STARTS TO CRY)
JO: Jack, why don't you take Jennifer into the lounge for a few moments?
JACK: Good idea. Thanks, Jo. Jennifer?
JACK LEADS JENNIFER OFF TO THE LOUNGE. JO GOES OVER TO ALICE, KIMBERLY, CARRIE AND CAROLINE. HOLD ON THIS WORRIED, CRYING, ANXIOUS GROUP, WHILE WE HEAR THE GUITAR CLOSE TO STING'S "FRAGILE." AND OUT.
SM. NURSES' STATION/LOUNGE. JACK AND JENNIFER ENTER THE LOUNGE. JENNIFER IS CRYING, JACK HAS HIS ARM AROUND HER.JACK: Jennifer...
JENNFER: Jack, it's not fair... it's not fair... what if she doesn't make it?
JACK: Jennifer, I won't lie to you. You heard your father, it doesn't look good.
JENNIFER: But why Carly? Why now?
JACK: I think we both know the answer to that...
JENNIFER: Lawrence...
JACK: It has to be him.
JENNIFER: Because of Carly's wanting custody of Nikki.
JACK: We both know how evil he is...
JENNIFER: This is a nightmare, will it never end?
JACK: At least we know Bo will be all right...
JENNIFER: Bo... All I've been thinking about is Carly. What about Bo? What is he going to do if something happens to Carly? He's already lost Hope.
JACK: Bo is a survivor, and so is Carly, so don't give up.
JENNIFER: But losing Hope was so horrible. He saw her die and now he's seen Carly shot. Why? Why is there so much violence?
JACK: I don't know... Maybe it's Bo's chosen profession.
JENNIFER: No, there has to be more, there has to be a reason. It can't be all senseless violence... it can't be... how can I raise Abby in that kind of world?
JENNIFER BEGINS TO CRY ANEW AND JACK PUTS HIS ARM AROUND HER,AND PULLING OUT A HANKIE, HE TRIES TO DRY HER EYES.JACK: Jennifer, I will be there to protect my daughter and so will you. We'll keep her safe.
JENNIFER: You can't guarantee that.
JACK: No... I can't...
JENNIFER: Hope, Isabella, and now Carly... I don't think I can stand it.
JACK: You can and you will. I'll help you.
JENNIFER: Jack, how can you be so... so...
JACK: What?
JENNIFER: I don't know... strong, supportive, maybe unfeeling... I don't know, this doesn't seem to affect you.
JACK: (HOLDING JENNIFER'S FACE IN HIS HANDS) Seeing you like this affects me. (BEAT) (HE DROPS HIS HANDS) But Jennifer, life goes on. Steve, Isabella, Hope, they're all gone and I'm still here, we're still here.
JENNIFER: And...
JACK: And I don't know if this is going to make any sense... (BEAT) I had cancer. Now I'm in remission. But, you know, you're never really what the doctors call "cured." And I only have one kidney... we never talk about that.
JENNIFER: I didn't think you liked to talk about it.
JACK: The reasons... no... that's my past... But... how can I explain this? People used to ask me if I was scared of living with cancer or scared to die.
JENNIFER: And were you?
JACK: No. Surviving just makes you want to fight all the harder to hold on to life.
JENNIFER: To fight...
JACK: Yes, to fight and to hold on. Hold on to what you have. Because you really know, you understand how fragile life is... how precious it is... and you don't want to waste a single moment.
JENNIFER: I didn't know that's how you felt.
JACK: You know I don't wear my heart on my sleave, I never have. But that doesn't mean I don't feel.
JENNIFER: I know... I didn't mean... I'm sorry...
JACK: Don't be sorry. That's my point. Hold on. Hold on to hope, hold on to life, if you can't... hold on to me.
JACK GRABS JENNIFER INTO A TIGHT EMBRACE.JACK: (CONT'D) Hold on to me...
HOLD ON JACK AND JENNIFER'S EMBRACE.LAWRENCE: Is Nikki asleep?CUT TO: ALAMAIN MANSION/LIVING ROOM. LAWRENCE IS HANGING UP THE PHONE AS VIVIAN COMES DOWN THE STAIRS.
VIVIAN: Yes, but it took me a long time to calm him down. Did you find out anything?
LAWRENCE: Katerina and Bo are at the Hospital, my sources tell me she's critical...
VIVIAN: You know what this means, don't you, Lawrence?
LAWRENCE: I'm not in the mood for guessing games, Vivian.
VIVIAN: It means that Carly could be out of our hair for good.
LAWRENCE: Vivian! Try to have some respect. Katerina is fighting for her life at this very moment.
VIVIAN: (SMILING) Oh call me ill-bred if you like, Lawrence, but I can't help it. I just pray, if there is a God, that She'll see to it that Carly can never take Nikki away from me... ever.
LAWRENCE: (UPSET) How can you gloat over this? I admit, I wanted to keep Carly from taking my son, but not like this.
VIVIAN: What do you mean, not like this?
LAWRENCE: Just what I said. And I find your gleefulness to be very inappropriate.
VIVIAN: I thought this was what you'd wanted, what you'd planned...
LAWRENCE: What do you think I planned, Vivian?
VIVIAN: (LOOKING AT HIM CLOSELY) Nothing, Lawrence, absolutely nothing...
OUT ON VIVIAN.
SM. NURSES' STATION/LOUNGE. SHAWN, JOHN, AND ABE ARE PACING. JO AND CAROLINE ARE SEATED, FIDDLING WITH COFFEE CUPS, BUT NOT DRINKING.JOHN: It's got to be Larry. He's done some low things, but this takes the cake.
SHAWN: That man has to be stopped. And I'm just the one to do it. Are you fellas with me?
CAROLINE: Shawn...
ABE: (HOLDING HIS HANDS OUT) Now come on, calm down. No one wants to get Alamain more than me, but Janet is right. We need to go by the book on this one.
SHAWN: (SHAKING HIS FIST) Why do we need to go by the rules? The rules ain't good enough for the likes of him!
JO GETS UP AND PUTS HER HAND ON SHAWN'S ARM.JO: I understand exactly how you feel Shawn. I felt the same way when Steve died.
SHAWN: See there? Jo knows what I'm talking about.
JO: Yes, I do. I blamed Nick for Steve's death. I allowed myself to be consumed by rage and hatred and pain. Just like you.
CAROLINE: Jo, you don't have to go through this again.
JO: It's OK, Caroline. I need to. You see, the night I killed Nick I finally let go of all that anger.
SHAWN: (STILL ANGRY) And it felt good, didn't it? Gave him back some of his own medicine, eh?
JO: Good, no. It made me feel... numb...
SHAWN: But you got the bastard...
JO: Yes, but by killing Nick I sunk to his level... I let him win.
SHAWN: But you paid him back for killing Steve.
JO: No, don't you see? By killing Nick I lost a basic part of my humanity...
JO WALKS OVER TO THE WINDOW AND LOOKS UP AT THE SKY. THE OTHERS ARE VERY QUIET.JO: (CONT'D) Because of me there is one less man walking the earth.
JO TURNS TO FACE EVERYONE.JO: (CONT'D) If I had let things be, Nick would be in jail now. And I'd be able to sleep at night...
CAROLINE GETS UP AND HUGS JO.CAROLINE: I am so sorry...
JO: And you know what the saddest part is? It didn't bring back Steve... (BEAT) You know I always tried to teach my kids right from wrong. Some teacher I turned out to be... Shawn, I hope it's not too late for you to learn from my mistake.
SHAWN: (SOBERLY) It's never too late, Jo.
JENNIFER AND JACK COME OUT OF THE LOUNGE. JENNIFER WALKS UP TO SHAWN AND CAROLINE.JENNIFER: Has anyone contacted Frankie?
CAROLINE: Not yet. We were hoping we would know more... he's so far away...
JENNIFER: I just thought... he is Carly's brother...
DR. RYAN ENTERS.RYAN: Mr. and Mrs. Brady... I just wanted to let you know your grandson is going to be fine.
CAROLINE: Thank God!
RYAN: I know it looked pretty bad. Scalp wounds tend to look a lot worse than they are.
CAROLINE: Can we take him home?
RYAN: We're keeping him overnight for observation, just to make sure he doesn't have a concussion. He should be released in the morning.
SHAWN: Thank you, doctor.
RYAN: There's not much you folks can do here tonight, why don't you go home and get some rest?
CAROLINE: Not yet. We still don't know about Carly. Have you heard anything?
RYAN: I'm sorry, no. I've been in and out of triage and the O.R. all night...
