TEASER

JACK/JENNIFER LIVING ROOM. THERE IS A KNOCK ON THE DOOR. JACK WALKS DOWN FROM UPSTAIRS, KNOTTING HIS TIE. HE OPENS THE DOOR AND WE SEE VERN.
JACK: Vern. Any news?

VERN: No, nothing since last night.

JACK: Well then, what are you doing here? I need you back at the Spectator. There's a lot of yellow journalism out there and I want the Spectator to print just the facts, not the rumors.

VERN: Don't worry, I'll take care of everything.

JACK: You'd better, have you seen the Chronicle?

VERN: Don't worry, Jack, I'll handle it. How is Jenny girl taking it?

JACK: Not too well. I don't think she slept at all.

VERN: She's going to need you by her side through this, Jack.

JACK: I know that, Vern. And I also know that Jennifer will want whoever has done this brought to justice.

VERN: We all want that.

JACK: But are we all willing to put up $25,000 as a reward?

VERN: $25,000?! The Spectator doesn't have that kind of money yet.

JACK: Not the Spectator's money, Vern. My money. Put it on the front page. (HE GESTURES WITH HIS HANDS) $25,000 for information leading to the arrest of the shooter.

VERN: Are you sure you want to do this, Jack? Not to speak ill of the dead or anything, but Carly wasn't exactly your favorite person.

JACK: That's irrelevant now. We have to catch the killer. For Jennifer's sake.

HOLD JACK'S FACE.

CUT TO: SMALL NURSES' STATION/LOUNGE. ALICE, CAROLINE AND SHAWN EXIT THE ELEVATOR AND APPROACH THE NURSE'S STATION. A NURSE, KAREN, SITS AT THE DESK.

ALICE: Is Bo Brady allowed any visitors yet, Karen?

KAREN: (TO ALICE) Yes, in fact he's just awakened. (TO SHAWN AND CAROLINE) You're his parents, right?

CAROLINE: Yes, we are. He's not worse, is he?

KAREN: No, but he is agitated and maybe seeing a family member would help calm him down.

CAROLINE: Just imagine how Bo feels... to wake up and remember getting shot. He'll be wanting to know about Carly.

SHAWN: This is all Alamain's fault. We've got to put that man away.

ALICE: Abe, John and the Salem Police are all working to do just that.

SHAWN: If they don't succeed, they'll have to answer to me! Why I could solve everything just like...

CAROLINE: Shawn, dear, please.

SHAWN: And I'll bet Bo will be thinking this is Alamain's doing as well.

CAROLINE: You can't let Bo see you like this.

ALICE: Caroline is right, Shawn.

SHAWN: I know, I know. But every time I think of that Alamain I want to strangle him! I'm just boiling over.

CAROLINE: Maybe I'll just go in and see Bo then? I don't want you to upset him...

SHAWN: I'll be all right in a minute. The boy needs you. You go on in, I'll just walk around out here a bit... cool off...

ALICE: Would you like me to go with you, Caroline?

CAROLINE: Oh Alice, thank you. It is going to be difficult enough to tell Bo about Carly. I could use some support.

ALICE AND CAROLINE WALK TOWARDS BO'S ROOM.

CUT TO: BO'S HOSPITAL ROOM. BO IS TOSSING AND TURNING, MOANING IN HIS SLEEP. HOLD ON HIS FACE AND FADE INTO WHAT IS CLEARLY A DREAM. BO IS DANCING WITH HOPE. SHE IS WEARING A GORGEOUS BLACK DRESS, AND IS LAUGHING AND SMILING. BO IS SMILING AT HER, THEY ARE VERY MUCH IN LOVE. THE ROOM IS FILLED WITH CANDLES, AND MIRRORS LINE THE WALLS. THEY ARE DANCING TO THE ORCHESTRAL SECTION OF GUNS AND ROSES "NOVEMBER RAIN". SUDDENLY, A MASKED MAN COMES FROM BEHIND BO AND TAPS HIM, TO CUT IN. BO IS UNWILLING, AND TRIES TO PUSH THE MAN AWAY, BUT HE IS FORCEFUL IN GRABBING HOPE AND DANCING HER AWAY FROM BO. AS BO LOOKS ON IN HORROR, THE MASKED MAN DANCES HOPE UP A SMOKE-ENSHROUDED RAMP. THE SMOKE CLEARS TO REVEAL THAT THEY ARE ON A PLATFORM SUSPENDED OVER A BUBBLING PIT, THE ROOM HAS CHANGED TO BECOME HORRIBLE: THE CANDLES HAVE TURNED TO FIRES, THE MIRRORS HAVE BECOME MEDIEVAL TORTURE DEVICES. THE MAN REMOVES HIS MASK AND REVEALS IT'S ERNESTO! HOPE BEGINS TO SCREAM, AS BOTH DISAPPEAR IN A HUGE BALL OF SMOKE. BO PUTS HIS HEAD IN HIS HANDS, CLOSES HIS EYES AND SCREAMS HOPE'S NAME. SUDDENLY, BO IS WITH CARLY. THEY ARE NOW DANCING, SHE'S IN A MORE MODERN RED DRESS, WEARING A MAGNIFICENT RUBY NECKLACE. THE ROOM IS LOVELY, SWATHED IN GOLDEN DRAPERIES. BOUQUETS OF FLOWERS ARE EVERYWHERE. THE MUSIC IS THE VOCAL SECTION OF "NOVEMBER RAIN." THEY ARE SMILING AND HAPPY, AND BO TWIRLS CARLY AROUND AND KISSES HER. SUDDENLY A LOUD BANG IS HEARD, AND CARLY MOVES A STEP BACK FROM BO. HE LOOKS ON IN HORROR AS HER RUBY NECKLACE DISSOLVES INTO LARGE DROPS OF BLOOD. SHE BACKS UP, AND WE SEE THAT LAWRENCE IS BEHIND HER. SHE WALKS BACKWARDS TO LAWRENCE AND STANDS BESIDE HIM. THE ROOM HAS CHANGED, SO THE BONFIRES AND TORTURE EQUIPMENT ARE BACK, AND THE DRAPERIES AND FLOWERS HAVE BECOME SPIDER WEBS AND CRAWLY DISGUSTING CREATURES. BO BEGINS SHOUTING...

BO: No, no, this isn't true... what have you done to her, Lawrence?

LAWRENCE: It's what you have done to her. You killed her, and you killed Hope, too. (HOPE APPEARS ON LAWRENCE'S OTHER SIDE) You destroy everything you touch, Brady, and now you've destroyed yourself, too...

BO: What's going on, where the hell am I?

LAWRENCE: An apt query, Mr. Brady. You see, Hell is exactly where you are...

LAWRENCE BEGINS LAUGHING AN UNEARTHLY LAUGH, AND CARLY AND HOPE JOIN HIM. BO BEGINS TO SCREAM "NO", AND HOPE AND CARLY'S NAMES. FADE OUT ON LAWRENCE'S LAUGHTER AND BACK TO BO IN THE HOSPITAL BED. WE SEE BO WAKE UP, IN A HOSPITAL ROOM. HE REACHES TO HIS HEAD AND WINCES, THEN TRIES TO MOVE HIS ARMS TO GET UP, AND MOANS LOUDLY. THE NURSE RUNS IN, BO'S SHOUTS HAVE SUMMONED HER.
NURSE: Mr. Brady, please, calm down. Can I get you something?

BO: Carly, you can get me Carly. Or my parents, or someone who'll tell me what the Hell is going on?

OUT ON BO'S TORMENT.

ACT I

BO'S ROOM/CORRIDOR. CAROLINE AND ALICE WALK IN. BO IS CLEARLY AGITATED AND UPSET.
CAROLINE: Bo, dear, you have to calm down... how are you feeling?

BO: No one will tell me anything... where's Carly, what happened? I've been having these dreams... terrible, horrible dreams...

ALICE: Bo, darling, you need to relax a little, you're not going to get well...

BO: Mrs. H, Mom, please, just tell me where Carly is, and what happened. I remember holding her, and a shot...

CAROLINE: Yes, you two were on the pier, and there was a shot...

BO: Dammit, what happened?

CAROLINE: Bo, I'll tell you, but you must promise to calm down. The doctors are very worried about you, after all the blood you lost, the head injury...

BO: To hell with that, Mom, I'm begging you... what happened?

ALICE: You and Carly were shot. Carly fell forward on to you and knocked you down, that's how you hurt your head.

BO: Carly... what's happened to Carly? Where is she?

CAROLINE: I don't know how to tell you this.. Bill Horton went into surgery, did everything he could to save her...

BO: Save her?

CAROLINE: She died in surgery, she never regained consciousness...

BO: Died? No, that's not possible...

ALICE: Bill did all he could, but she was too badly damaged internally. It was very quick, Bo, and she was never in any pain...

BO: I'll kill him...

CAROLINE: What did you say...

BO: I'll kill him! I know he did it, and he's going to die for it..

ALICE: No one knows who was responsible for this terrible, terrible thing...

BO: I know, and I'll tell you who did it. It was Lawrence Alamain. He killed my Princess and I'm going to kill him.

BO ATTEMPTS TO RISE FROM THE BED, IN SPITE OF THE BANDAGES AROUND HIS HEAD, THE SLING ON HIS ARM, AND THE IV TUBES. HE MANAGES BY PURE ADRENALIN TO GET TO HIS FEET, BUT HE QUICKLY COLLAPSES. LUCKILY, CAROLINE IS ABLE TO SUPPORT HIM SOMEWHAT AND PROPEL HIM BACK TO THE BED. A NURSE RUSHES IN.
NURSE: What is going on here? All his vital signs just spiked my monitor. He should be lying quietly...

BO: (HALF-SITTING, HALF LYING ON BED, HE IS MOANING IN PAIN, BUT WHISPERING UNDER HIS BREATH) Kill him, he's gotta pay for this...

ALICE: Is there anything you can do?

CAROLINE: Bo, son, you have to relax...

BILL WALKS IN.
BILL: Nurse, I just got your page... (SEES BO) What the hell is happening here...
BO IS STILL ATTEMPTING TO GET UP, BUT IS SERIOUSLY WEAKENING.
BO: Doc, you've got to... let me go... make Larry pay...

CAROLINE: We just told him about Carly... Bill, can you do something to calm him down...

BILL: I'm going to have to. Nurse, get me codeine, stat! I'm going to give him some pain medication... that will make him drowsy, slow him down...

BO: (WHO HAS NOT RELENTED HIS EFFORTS TO RISE) Drowsy, Doc, no, God, no, don't make me sleep...

BILL: (PHYSICALLY RESTRAINS BO) Damn it, Bo, you're going to kill yourself if you keep this up...

NURSE HANDS BILL A SYRINGE, HE INJECTS BO'S IV WHILE THE NURSE, ALICE AND CAROLINE TRY TO HOLD BO STILL.
BILL: (CONT'D) There, that should settle him down a little...

BO: No! Please, no sleep, can't sleep, gotta get Larry, make Larry pay.... sleep... can't face it... those dreams...

BO SLIPS INTO SLEEP FROM THE COMBINATION OF THE CODEINE, TRAUMA AND EXHAUSTION.
BILL: I think you two should go, let him get some rest.

ALICE: Can't we stay if we're quiet?

BILL: Mom, it's best for Bo...

ALICE: All right.

CAROLINE: (TO BO) Sleep well, darling, we'll take care of things...

BILL, ALICE, AND CAROLINE LEAVE, AS THE NURSE IS ADJUSTING BO'S COVERS, IV, ETC. GO TO: CORRIDOR OUTSIDE THE ROOM.
BILL: Hopefully, he'll rest for a little while, while his body repairs from this trauma. When he wakes up, maybe he'll be better able to deal with all this.

CAROLINE: When should we come back?

ALICE: Darling, what you need to do is find Shawn, and join me at the restaurant. You both need a good meal and some rest.

BILL: Yes, do that, and then you can come back after you've had breakfast and see if he's awake.

CAROLINE: How's Shawn-Douglas?

BILL: He's doing fine, we're letting him sleep, too, since he went through quite a bit himself. You can probably pick him up when you come back.

CAROLINE: I hate to leave them both here...

ALICE: You'll be no help to anyone if you run yourself ragged. Let's go get Shawn and then see if there are any of my fresh donuts left...

ALICE AND CAROLINE HEAD TOWARDS THE LOUNGE, AS BILL LOOKS AFTER THEM.

CUT TO: ABIGAIL'S ROOM. ABIGAIL IS IN HER CRIB, CRYING. JENNIFER COMES IN, STILL IN NIGHT CLOTHES, HER HAIR MUSSED AND HER EYES RED AND PUFFY.

JENNIFER: Mama's here, Abby. Good morning, sweetheart.
JENNIFER PICKS UP ABIGAIL AND CUDDLES HER. ABIGAIL BEGINS TO CALM DOWN A BIT.
JENNIFER: (CONT'D) Oh, Abby. It's not a good morning at all. The world can be a terrible place sometimes. I hope you never have to see that side of it.
JENNIFER HOLDS ABIGAIL CLOSER.
JENNIFER: (CONT'D) Your mama is very sad today, Abby. She just lost her best friend in the whole world and you just lost your godmother.
JENNIFER BEGINS TO CRY.
JENNIFER: (CONT'D) Carly was the most wonderful person. She loved you so much. She was always there for me, we were so close. I hope you have a friend like that someday.
JENNIFER WIPES HER EYES AND ADJUSTS ABIGAIL ON HER HIP. THEY GO TO THE CLOSET AND LOOK THROUGH ABIGAIL'S CLOTHES.
JENNIFER: (CONT'D) Well, we'd better get you dressed. It is going to be a long day.
JENNIFER AND ABIGAIL MOVE TO THE CHANGING TABLE.
JENNIFER: (CONT'D) Maybe you'll be friends with Nikki when you get a bit bigger, Abby. This must be awful for him. I wonder what will happen to him now? He can't stay with Lawrence, he just can't.
HOLD ON JENNIFER.

CUT TO: LAWRENCE'S BEDROOM. LAWRENCE IS IN HIS PAJAMAS AND BATHROBE, HE HAS OBVIOUSLY JUST AWAKENED. THE PHONE RINGS, AND HE CROSSES FROM HIS WINDOW TO THE PHONE, YAWNING.

LAWRENCE: Alamain. Yes, this is Lawrence Alamain. Yes. What?
THERE IS A KNOCK ON THE DOOR AND VIVIAN ENTERS, ALSO DRESSED IN BATHROBE.
LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) Oh... Yes. Thank you for calling.
LAWRENCE HANGS UP THE PHONE SLOWLY AS VIVIAN LOOKS ON, CONCERNED.
VIVIAN: Lawrence? Lawrence? What is it? What's happened?

LAWRENCE: It's Carly.

VIVIAN: Carly? What about her? She isn't...

LAWRENCE: Yes. She's dead.

VIVIAN: Good.

LAWRENCE: What do you mean, "good"?

VIVIAN: Don't get upset, dear. I was just thinking out loud. This means our troubles are over. (SMILES)

LAWRENCE: Don't be so sure of that, Vivian.

VIVIAN: Whyever not? With your precious Carly out of the way, there's nothing to worry about. Now Nikki is safe. And so are you. She can't ever get her hooks into you again.

LAWRENCE: Will you listen to yourself? Vivian, a woman is dead!

VIVIAN: Yes, she is. So are a lot of people, Lawrence. You've never let that upset you before, so don't play holier-than-thou with me.

LAWRENCE: (TAKES A DEEP BREATH) You're right, Vivian. I apologize. It's just that... Katerina meant so much to me once.

VIVIAN: I know. But don't you see? It's all over now. We're all safe. You. Me. Nikki.

LAWRENCE: Do you honestly believe that?

VIVIAN: Of course... with Carly out of the way...

LAWRENCE: That is exactly our problem.

VIVIAN: Lawrence, what are you talking about?

LAWRENCE: With Carly dead, who do you think will be the first people the police question? Who do you think will be at the top of their list of suspects? We will, Vivian.

VIVAIN: (SLOWLY) Oh. Dear. I hadn't thought of that.

LAWRENCE: Well, maybe you should have.

VIVIAN: What do you mean, "should have"?

LAWRENCE: Where were you last night, Vivian?

VIVIAN: I was... at home, reading a book.

LAWRENCE: Alone?

VIVIAN: Of course I was alone. One doesn't usually read in front of company, or at a party.

LAWRENCE: In other words, you don't have an alibi.

VIVIAN: No...

LAWRENCE: What about Ivan?

VIVIAN: I gave him the night off. He came home when it started raining... but I'm sure he'd be willing to cover for me...

LAWRENCE: Assuming he wasn't already doing something for you, Vivian.

VIVIAN: What do you mean?

LAWRENCE: You know damned well what I mean. Ivan would do anything for you.

VIVIAN: Perhaps...

LAWRENCE: Would he kill for you, Vivian?

VIVIAN: You'd have to ask him.

LAWRENCE: Vivian...

VIVIAN: Lawrence, this is pointless. It doesn't matter what I might have had Ivan doing, Carly's dead. And as you so rightly pointed out, we will be suspect and I don't seem to have an alibi.

LAWRENCE: Vivian, why couldn't you have been better prepared?

VIVIAN: Well, I'm sorry Lawrence, but it never occurred to me that I might need an alibi. Should I spend the rest of my life in crowds, just in case? And what about you? Where were you last night?

LAWRENCE: I was out.

VIVIAN: Out where?

LAWRENCE: I was driving.

VIVIAN: And I suppose you were driving with a large crowd of people?

LAWRENCE: Of course not. I was driving alone.

VIVIAN: Wonderful. Another air-tight alibi.

LAWRENCE: Well, as you said, I wasn't aware I needed one.

VIVIAN: (UNBELIEVING) Of course.

LAWRENCE: It's true. I just needed to clear my head, so I went for a drive.

VIVIAN: Certainly... And I suppose no one saw you?

LAWRENCE: No one.

VIVIAN: No stranded prostitutes this time?

LAWRENCE: No such luck.

VIVIAN: We don't need luck.

LAWRENCE: We might. What about Nikki?

VIVIAN: You don't think Nikki killed...?

LAWRENCE: Of course not. But the police might.

VIVIAN: True. Especially after Lisanne.

LAWRENCE: Most especially after Lisanne.

VIVIAN: Well, then. It looks like we all need to come up with air-tight alibis.

LAWRENCE: And how do you propose to do that?

VIVIAN: I have my ways, dear boy. I have my ways.

HOLD ON VIVIAN'S FACE AND OUT.

ACT II

ALICE'S RESTAURANT. AUSTIN IS SITTING AT A TABLE AT THE FRONT OF THE RESTAURANT. AS CARRIE ENTERS, HE GETS UP AND WALKS UP TO HER. JONAH IS WAITING TABLES.
AUSTIN: Hi. Um... I heard about Carly and your uncle.

CARRIE: (VISIBLY UPSET) Yeah. It's all over the radio by now, isn't it? She's dead, he's hurt...

AUSTIN: (TRIES TO HOLD HER) I thought maybe you could use a shoulder to cry on.

CARRIE: No.

AUSTIN: I know you said you wanted me to leave. But I know you really need me now.

CARRIE: Austin, don't you get it?

AUSTIN: Get what? Carrie, we love each other. We should be together at a time like this.

CARRIE: No! Austin, it is over! Get it through your head, there is no more "us."

AUSTIN: But...

CARRIE: Austin, we loved each other. But then this (INDICATES HER SCAR) happened.

AUSTIN: I'm... sorry.

CARRIE: I know you are. That's not the point.

AUSTIN: I know you're upset about Carly, and I thought...

CARRIE: You thought you'd just rush in and hold me and I'd melt in your arms and everything would be better, is that it?

AUSTIN: Carrie...

CARRIE: Look, I am not a child. I'm an adult. Try to treat me like one. I made up my mind, Austin. It's over. Stop trying to make me change my mind. Just leave me alone.

AUSTIN TURNS DEJECTEDLY TO LEAVE, AS CARRIE TOUCHES HIS SHOULDER.
CARRIE: (TAKES A DEEP BREATH) Wait. I'm sorry. You're right. I'm upset about Carly and Bo.

AUSTIN: I'm sorry I upset you. I just... I love you.

CARRIE: I know. But you'll get over it.

AUSTIN: No. I'll always love you.

CARRIE: Austin... you'll get over it. Just like I'm starting to get over you.

AUSTIN: No.

CARRIE: Yes. And I'll always remember you, and I'll try and remember the good times.

AUSTIN: Are you sure this is what you want?

CARRIE: Positive.

AUSTIN: Just seeing you, being near you... I want you so bad. It hurts, knowing you don't want me.

CARRIE: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you.

AUSTIN: I've been thinking... maybe it's best if I just go. Leave Salem.

CARRIE: I think that might be a good idea.

AUSTIN: So. This is it?

CARRIE: This is it.

AUSTIN: So. I guess this is good-bye?

CARRIE: I think this is for the best. Really. Good-bye Austin.

CARRIE TURNS AWAY FROM HIM SO HE WON'T SEE THAT SHE'S CRYING.
AUSTIN: Good-bye.
AUSTIN WALKS OUT OF THE RESTAURANT. HE STOPS OUTSIDE AND LOOKS BACK, BUT WALKS ON. CARRIE WALKS OVER TO THE TABLE AT WHICH HE HAD BEEN SITTING AND BEGINS BREATHING SLOWLY, TRYING TO CALM HERSELF. JOHN PASSES AUSTIN IN THE STREET, WALKS IN AND SEES CARRIE. JOHN WALKS OVER AND SITS NEXT TO HER.
JOHN: Hey Punkin.

CARRIE: Hi! (TRIES TO SMILE)

JOHN: Problems with Austin, huh?

CARRIE: He's... he's leaving town.

JOHN: What do you think of that idea?

CARRIE: I think it's great. I think it's for the best.

JOHN: But?

CARRIE: But. But I love him. Still. And it hurts. Part of me wants to run after him.

JOHN: Then why don't you?

CARRIE: Because another part of me knows it's better this way.

JOHN: And you're gonna listen to that part of you, huh?

CARRIE: Yeah. I think it's right. I just wish doing what's right didn't hurt so bad.

JOHN: Yeah, well. Welcome to being a grown up, Punkin.

CARRIE: I don't think I like it very much.

JOHN: It has its ups and downs. (BEAT) You know, I know how you feel.

CARRIE: Really?

JOHN: Yeah. I felt the same way when Marlena left. But I knew it was the best thing for everyone.

CARRIE: Does it ever stop hurting?

JOHN: Takes a while. But it starts fading away. It may never go completely away, but you learn to go on.

CARRIE: Sounds great. (SNIFFLES). How long do I have to wait?

JOHN: It'll take a while. Till then, you look like you could use a shoulder to cry on.

CARRIE: Yeah. I could.

CARRIE LEANS ON JOHN'S SHOULDER AND BEGINS TO CRY SOFTLY AS HE HOLDS HER. GO TO: THE DOOR AS JOHN, KIMBERLY AND PHILIP, CAROLINE, SHAWN, ALICE AND TOM WALK IN AND SIT DOWN AT A BIG BOOTH. CARRIE AND JOHN SEE THEM. CARRIE WALKS TO THE BATHROOM. JOHN HEADS TOWARDS THE TABLE.
CAROLINE: I just couldn't bear to see Bo like that. It tore my heart out.
ALICE PUTS HER HAND ON CAROLINE'S SHOULDER.
ALICE: No matter how old you get or how grown your children are...

TOM: (FINISHING FOR HER) Seeing them in pain hurts you more than it hurts them.

CAROLINE: I just hope that when he wakes up he'll be a little calmer.

KIMBERLY: We'll all be here to help him, Mama.

SHAWN: We surely will. It's times like these you need your family around you.

JOHN WALKS UP, HEARING THE LAST SENTENCE.
JOHN: Speaking of family, any word on Roman and Kayla?

CAROLINE: John, I didn't notice you when I came in. Join us...

SHAWN: Yeah, sit down.

JOHN: I'll stand, thanks.

SHAWN: OK... what was I saying... oh yes... I talked to Roman this morning, he was catching the first flight out. Kayla and Marcus will probably get here sometime today as well.

PHILIP: Did the doctors say when Bo could be released?

CAROLINE: Not for a couple of days at least. They are still watching the head injury pretty closely.

JOHN: (LOOKING AT HIS WATCH) Well, Abe and Lexie should be at the agency by now. I think I'll go call them and see if they need help.

JOHN WALKS TOWARDS THE PHONES.
CAROLINE: Shawn, I'm still worried about Bo. Will you be all right during the lunch rush without me?

PHILIP: Don't you two worry about a thing. Kim and I'll go open the Pub, you go be with Bo.

KIMBERLY: Yes, Papa. You go on and sit with Bo. He needs you.

SHAWN: I don't know... Are you sure?

PHILIP: We're sure. I know I'm not officially a part of this family yet, but I want to do everything I can to help.

SHAWN: All right, it's a deal. You open and we'll come by the Pub later.

JOHN COMES BACK TO HEAR THIS LAST PART.
JOHN: How about we all meet up at the Pub later then? Carrie and I would like to go check on Abe and Lexie.

SHAWN: Ah, you're good kids, you are. It's good to see a family pull together in troubled times.

CAROLINE: I still can't believe Carly is gone.

KIMBERLY: I can't either. We should be planning a wedding... not a funeral.

HOLD ON KIMBERLY. GO TO: RESTAURANT ENTRANCE, VICTOR WALKS IN, HE SITS DOWN WITHOUT SEEING THE BRADYS. CAROLINE SEES HIM. SHE LOOKS AT SHAWN.
CAROLINE: Shawn, I know this is a lot to ask... but would you mind if I talked to Victor?

SHAWN: That man has caused a lot of heartache for our family... (LOOKS AT THE OBVIOUSLY DISTRESSED VICTOR) But I guess he might be needing someone to talk to about now.

CAROLINE: (KISSING SHAWN) Thank you.

CAROLINE GETS UP AND GOES TO VICTOR.
CAROLINE: Victor? (HE DOESN'T HEAR HER) Victor, are you ok?

VICTOR: (LOOKS UP STARTLED) Uh... Caroline? How are you?

CAROLINE: No, how are you? This must be difficult.

VICTOR: As you well know. Have you heard more about Bo?

CAROLINE: Only that he is stable but upset... I'm just grateful that Shawn-Douglas is all right.

VICTOR: Is he staying with you?

CAROLINE: Yes. I wanted him to be with people who love him. He's having a hard time understanding this.

VICTOR: I'm not so sure I understand this...

CAROLINE: You know I'm here for you if you need me...

VICTOR: It's just after losing Isabella...

CAROLINE: And not having Justin close by. You don't have any family... I understand...

VICTOR: Thank you. You don't know how much that means to me.

CAROLINE: I think I do...

VICTOR: John is a good man and I'm grateful to have him and Brady nearby... but it's not like having my own family... (HE LOOKS TENDERLY AT CAROLINE) I am very much alone.

CAROLINE: You don't have to be.

VICTOR: If only things had been different with us so very long ago. (BEAT) Shawn is a very lucky man. I hope he realises that.

CAROLINE: I'm lucky, too... I have a wonderful family... and so do you...

VICTOR: Bo?

CAROLINE: Yes, Bo. And he will need both of us in the weeks and months to come.

VICTOR: So I will need to be strong for Bo and Shawn-Douglas...

CAROLINE: I pray that we both have the strength and love to get them through this. Losing a love... (LOOKS AT VICTOR) is a terrible tragedy.

VICTOR: Yes... it is. Like the time I lost you. (BEAT) Go on now... I'll be fine. Your family needs you.

CAROLINE: Take care, Victor. And remember what I said. I'll be here if you need me.

CAROLINE WALKS BACK TO HER FAMILY, AS VICTOR LOOKS AFTER HER.
CAROLINE: Shawn, let's go back to the Hospital. I think we should be with Bo.

SHAWN: You're right, darlin'. Let's so see our son.

HOLD ON CAROLINE'S FACE AS SHAWN CALLS BO "THEIR" SON.

CUT TO: JACK/JENNIFER LIVING ROOM. ABIGAIL IS IN HER HIGH CHAIR, NEXT TO JENNIFER. JACK ENTERS FROM THE KITCHEN WITH A PLATE OF TOAST.

JACK: Jennifer, you haven't even touched your breakfast.

JENNIFER: I can't think of food right now, Jack.

JACK: Did you manage to get any sleep at all last night?

JENNIFER: No, not much. I hope I didn't keep you awake.

JACK: Well, if the truth be told, I wasn't asleep either. I'm worried about you.

JENNIFER: Jack, how could this happen? Carly's life was just turning around. She had Bo...

JENNIFER TURNS TO ABIGAIL AND STROKES HER HAIR.
JENNIFER: (CONT'D) She had her son back. She was so young. She had this whole perfect life just ahead of her.

JACK: Well, at least she died knowing her son. And things were settled with her and Bo.

JENNIFER: It's still so unfair. She was such a good person. (BEAT) Are you going to work today?

JACK: (AROUND A BITE OF TOAST) Well, no, I didn't think you would want me to. I want to be here if you need me.

JENNIFER: No, I want you to go to work.

JACK: You do?

JENNIFER: Yes, I want you to write a memorial for Carly, Jack... for the Spectator, so no one will forget her and all the good things she has done.

JACK: A memorial?

JENNIFER: Yes. I don't want some 20 line obit written by one of the staff writers.

JACK: We have some good writers...

JENNIFER: But none as good as you. I want you to write a kind of a retrospective of her whole life.

JACK: A retrospective... I don't know...

JENNIFER: But Jack, Carly left all her wealth and power behind her to help others. She was a wonderful doctor...

JACK: I don't...

JENNIFER: Jack, do it for me.

JACK: All right. You shall have your memorial. And it will be the best-written, most well-researched piece this town as ever seen.

OUT ON JACK'S PROMISE.

ACT III

HOSPITAL/BO'S ROOM. CAROLINE IS SITTING IN A CHAIR BY BO'S BED, HOLDING HIS HAND. SHAWN IS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BED PACING A LITTLE. BO BEGINS TO STIR AND THEY BOTH WATCH ANXIOUSLY.
SHAWN: It looks like he's coming around.

CAROLINE: Bo? Honey?

BO: (VERY GROGGY) Mom?... Pop?

CAROLINE: We're here, darling.

BO: You were here before right? With Mrs. H.? It's not true, is it?

CAROLINE: (GENTLY) I'm afraid it is, dear.

BO: Then Carly is really dead?

CAROLINE: Yes.

BO: (GETTING AGITATED) It's Larry, it's got to be Larry who did this! I have to get him!

SHAWN PUTS HIS HANDS ON BO'S SHOULDERS TO KEEP HIM IN BED.
SHAWN: Now, stop that. You're in no condition to be going after Alamain.

BO: Let me go, let me go.

SHAWN: Now, Bo, listen to me. I know you're suffering. But you've got someone else to think about, someone who is going to need your help to get through this.

BO: (BEGINNING TO CALM DOWN) Oh God, Shawn-Douglas.

SHAWN: Yes, Shawn-Douglas. Now the little guy doesn't even know what's going on. He's going to wake up wondering why he's here and he's going to need his Papa.

BO: (PANICKING) Sailor is here? Did he get hurt, too? What's wrong?

CAROLINE: It's not serious, just a bump on the head. They said he can come home with us today.

SHAWN: But you're going to have to tell him about Carly, Bo. It should come from you.

BO: I don't know if I can do it.

SHAWN: You're going to have to be strong.

CAROLINE: He's going to need you more than ever, Bo. Just like he did when...

BO: I never thought we'd have to go through this again. (STRUGGLES TO KEEP HIS COMPOSURE) Hope... Carly...

BO CAN'T HOLD ON ANY LONGER. HIS FACE CRUMPLES AND HE BREAKS DOWN. CAROLINE HOLDS HIM AS HE SOBS BROKENLY, SHAWN STANDS BEHIND, SUPPORTING THEM BOTH.

CUT TO: JACK'S OFFICE/SPECTATOR. JACK IS SITTING AT HIS DESK, HARD AT WORK, WHEN VERN WALKS IN.

JACK: Did you find the stuff I asked for?

VERN: Jack, you shouldn't be pushing yourself so hard.

JACK: Vern, I have a mother, what I need now is a good newspaper man. Did you find the data on Carly?

VERN: Jack, I have to say... it's odd.

JACK: What's odd?

VERN: We can't find much on Carly Manning.

JACK: Vern, please tell me that you knew enough to check under the name Katerina Von Leuschner.

VERN: Jack, I'm not an idiot.

JACK: Then get to the point.

VERN: I told you, we can't find much on Carly or Katerina or whatever you want to call her.

JACK: Define "much."

VERN: We found that stuff we dug up three years ago, when she first came to town.

JACK: And...

VERN: And not much else.

VERN HANDS JACK A SLIM FOLDER, AND JACK QUICKLY PERUSES THE CONTENTS.
JACK: You mean all you've got is a baby picture and some press clippings about an arranged marriage?

VERN: Yes... and a marriage that was arranged when she was an infant.

JACK: There's got to be more than this. Jennifer told me they went to school together in Switzerland. Did you contact the School?

VERN: We're trying...

JACK: And what about when she left the school? Jennifer told me she ran away. I think that's when she became Carly Manning. There must be documentation somewhere. What about Medical School?

VERN: Jack, maybe you can find it. But as far as I can tell, Carly Manning is a big blank until she arrived in Salem.

JACK: Let me call Adrienne. Adrienne met Carly in Tahiti while she was on her honeymoon. That's how Carly ended up in Salem. Maybe Adrienne remembers something.

VERN: Yeah, I remember this now... Didn't someone kidnap Adrienne, thinking she was Carly?

JACK: Yeah... And Jennifer told me she once impersonated Carly at school... hmmm...

JACK PICKS UP CARLY'S BABY PHOTO AND STARES AT IT.
JACK: (CONT'D) Vern, wouldn't you say that this baby has dark hair?

VERN: Yes.

JACK: And wouldn't you say Jennifer and Adrienne are blonde?

VERN: Of course...

JACK: And Carly has dark hair...

VERN: Yes, so?

JACK: I don't know... yet... It just seems odd that Jennifer impersonated Carly and Adrienne was mistaken for her...

VERN: Maybe Carly died her hair. Lots of women do.

JACK: Yeah... but I thought Katerina was supposed to be a blonde and that Carly died her hair dark to fool everyone.

VERN: Jack, I think you've been at this too long. What does hair color have to do with any of this?

JACK: What did they used to say, "gentlemen prefer blondes?" I feel like we're missing more than a paper trail here Vern, I think we're missing something important... very important...

HOLD ON JACK'S FACE.

CUT TO: BO'S HOSPITAL ROOM. BO IS SITTING UP IN BED. HIS EYES ARE REDDENED FROM TEARS AND HE IS STILL VISIBLY UPSET. BUT HE IS ALSO DETERMINED TO MAKE THIS AS EASY AS POSSIBLE ON HIS SON. A NURSE WHEELS SHAWN-DOUGLAS, ON A MOBILE GURNEY, INTO BO'S ROOM.

NURSE: Now you remember, Shawn-Douglas, you're still supposed to rest a little, and not move around...

SHAWN-D: I remember, thanks, Nurse Rolin.

NURSE: (TO BO) Are you going to be ok with this, Mr. Brady?

BO: We'll be just fine, thanks.

THE NURSE LEAVES.
SHAWN-D: Papa, what's going on? I was sleeping, and then I woke up in the hospital, and my head hurt...

BO: I know Shawn-D. Does your head feel better now?

SHAWN-D: A little... Papa, where's Carly? She tucked me in before...

BO: She did? Well... Carly love... loves... you.

SHAWN: What happened to you, Papa? Does your head hurt, too?

BO: I'm fine, don't you worry about me.

SHAWN-D: I won't. I know Carly will take care of you.

BO: I know the nurse wants you to stay put, but I think I'd like it if you could come sit next to me... think you can do that?

SHAWN-D: Sure, Papa...

SHAWN-D, WITH MINIMAL HELP FROM BO'S GOOD ARM, MANAGES TO CRAWL FROM HIS GURNEY TO BO'S BED, WHERE HE SETTLES IN NEXT TO HIS FATHER.
BO: Comfortable?

SHAWN-D: Yes, Papa. (BEAT) (LOOKING AT BO) Papa what's wrong?

BO: Well, son, this is hard for me to tell you...

SHAWN-D: I'm a big boy now. Carly says so. You can tell me anything.

BO: Oh sailor... (DEEP BREATH) While you were asleep, Carly and I went out on the dock by the boat to talk. We were hugging...

SHAWN-D: Papa, I know you do that.

BO: No Shawn-D, while we were talking someone... someone shot us.

SHAWN-D: With a gun?

BO: Yes, with a gun.

SHAWN-D: And that's why you have bandages on your head and arm?

BO: Yes, Shawn-D, that's why...

SHAWN-D: How did I hurt my head?

BO: We think the bad person that shot us probably hit you while you were sleeping, so you wouldn't see anything.

SHAWN-D: You mean they didn't want me to see them?

BO: Right.

SHAWN-D: So what happened to Carly? Is she in a hospital room, too? Can we go see her?

BO: No, son, no, she's... she's... gone...

SHAWN-D: You mean they took her somewhere else?

BO: Shawn-Douglas, the bullet hurt her really bad...

SHAWN-D: She'll be OK.

BO: No... the doctors tried... she didn't live.

SHAWN-D: Didn't live?

BO: She's dead, son.

SHAWN-D: Nooooo, Papa, noooo. Not Carly, she can't be dead. She can't be...

BO: I'm sorry...

SHAWN-D: No... I want Carly.

BO: She's gone. I know you loved her... (STARTS CRYING)

SHAWN-D: No, it's not true...

BO: Hush, Shawn-D, hush, little sailor... I don't want to believe it either, but it's true.

SHAWN-D: Carly's dead, she's never coming back...

BO: No, she's gone. But... but I think God must have taken her for a reason...

SHAWN-D: Like he took Mama?

BO: Like your Mama...

SHAWN-D: I miss Mama.

BO: I know, I miss her, too.

SHAWN-D: But Carly made me feel better when I was sad about Mama.

BO: She loved you, Shawn-D...

SHAWN-D: I loved her a lot...

BO: And so did I.

SHAWN-D: Did God love her, too?

BO: I think so. I think He took away Carly and your Mama... because He loved them... and wanted to make them angels... so they could watch over us...

SHAWN-D: You mean Carly and Mama are both going to watch over us?

BO: I'm sure of it, sailor... we have the two most beautiful angels in heaven watching over us...

SHAWN-D: I'm going to miss her, though, Papa, real bad.

BO: Me too... me too...

BO HOLDS SHAWN-DOUGLAS CLOSE WHILE HE CRIES, TEARS STREAMING DOWN HIS FACE. MUSIC SWELLS, THE ORCHESTRAL SECTION OF GUNS AND ROSES "NOVEMBER RAIN." AND OUT.

ACT IV

CARVER AND CARVER INVESTIGATIONS. JOHN AND CARRIE ARRIVE AS ABE AND LEXIE ARE COLLECTING THE SCATTERED PAPERS AND STACKING THEM HAPHAZARDLY ON THE FLOOR AND THE DESK. CARRIE'S EYES ARE STILL RED, BUT SHE HAS COLLECTED HERSELF.
JOHN: Will you look at this...

CARRIE: Oh no! This is... this is...

LEXIE: A mess. A big mess... And we're the ones who get to clean it up. Welcome to janitorial duty.

LEXIE HANDS CARRIE A STACK OF PAPERS.
LEXIE: (CONT'D) Just put these on top of any of the other stacks of stuff. We'll sort through them all later. Right now we need to clear a path and keep them from being trampled.

CARRIE: My plant! Poor thing!

CARRIE RUNS OVER AND PICKS UP HER PLANT, SCOOPING MORE DIRT INTO THE POT.
LEXIE: Yeah. Poor plant. Poor us, having to clean all this.

JOHN: Well, hey, you got a couple of willing volunteers here, boss!

LEXIE: Sticking around?

JOHN: It's not like they really need me at the office or anything. Anyhow, what are old friends for?

LEXIE: Thanks! Okay, let's get organized here.

ABE: (ENTERING FROM THE FILE ROOM) What? Get organized? And ruin this great system we have here?

JOHN: You know, for someone whose office looks like it was hit by a tornado, you seem awful cheerful.

ABE: One good thing came out of all of this.

JOHN: You got out of a stake-out?

ABE: Nope. Thanks to my beautiful, intelligent and resourceful wife (KISSES LEXIE), we managed to keep one very important clue from Alamain.

JOHN: Yeah?

LEXIE: That mysterious phone number of yours. I had it in my purse.

ABE: So Alamain may know just about everything else we have on him, but this... this he doesn't even suspect.

JOHN: Pretty good luck for you guys.

LEXIE: Planning, old friend. Planning.

JOHN: Uh huh. And I have some river-front property in Arizona.

LEXIE: (LAUGHS) So it was luck. Whatever it was, it was in our favor. So, let's get to cleaning.

JOHN: Whatever you say, boss.

LEXIE: Okay, John, you and Abe work in the file room. That's where it's the worst. Carrie, call the service and check if we have any messages. We need to get back into the swing of things.

CARRIE: Okay!

LEXIE: I'll work on getting all the glass out of my office, and work on the reception area.

ABE: Yes, ma'am! (SALUTES LEXIE)

ABE AND JOHN WALK BACK TO THE FILE ROOM, WHICH IS STILL COVERED WITH PAPERS.
JOHN: So, are you gonna be straight with me, man?

ABE: Yeah. Sorry about that. Lexie... she's really on edge. She's hanging on tight by trying to pretend...

JOHN: Yeah. It's a lot to deal with, all at once.

ABE: She'll be fine. She just needs to sort of get things under control. To make it look like everything's normal. It's her way of coping.

JOHN: I guess if it works. How are you holding up?

ABE: (SIGHS) To tell the truth, I feel like an idiot.

JOHN: Why?

ABE: Alamain set us up, and we fell for it.

JOHN: C'mon, there was no way you could know it was a set up.

ABE: Yeah, that's what I keep telling myself. Trouble is, I still don't believe it.

JOHN: Believe it. Lawrence is slick. I should know...

ABE: I'm sorry, this has got to be tough on you... He's your brother...

JOHN: He doesn't feel like my brother...

ABE: Can you handle it if he's behind the shooting? (REACHES OUT AND TOUCHES JOHN'S SHOULDER)

JOHN: Yeah, I can. Like I said, I know what he can do. You forget, I was one of the people who helped get Jack, Jennifer, Julie, Kayla, Shane, the whole group, out of those tunnels where Lawrence left them to die.

ABE: You're right...

JOHN: And how can anyone forget what he did to Jennifer? Lawrence is as cold and evil as they come.

ABE: Then you think he killed Carly and nearly killed Bo?

JOHN: I don't know, Abe, I just don't know...

HOLD ON JOHN'S FACE.

CUT TO: JACK'S OFFICE/SPECTATOR. JACK IS WORKING AT HIS DESK WHEN BILLIE WALKS IN, WITHOUT KNOCKING.

JACK: Billie Reed, don't you ever knock?

BILLIE: No, why should I?

JACK: Good manners?

BILLIE: They're a waste of time.

JACK: For you, they probably are. So I'll be brief, why are you here?

BILLIE: I just wanted to let you know that I got the money and I paid off Tony.

JACK: Then this mess is finally over?

BILLIE: Yep, it's a done deal.

JACK: And we're all safe?

BILLIE: No one will hurt your family, Jack.

JACK: Good. Are you all right, did Tony suspect?

BILLIE: Not a thing...

JACK: Fine.

BILLIE: Jack... thanks for the whole $100,000, I know that's not what you really found in the barn.

JACK: I figured that deadbeat... what was his name... Don... Jim...

BILLIE: Tim...

JACK: Tim would never pay you back that bail money.

BILLIE: It was a nice thing to do, Jack.

JACK: It wasn't nice, it was just a good investment. I wanted Tony out of my life forever.

BILLIE: OK... well... thanks... I guess I'll say good-bye...

JACK: Good-bye?

BILLIE: Yep, I'm going to blow this town. Salem hasn't been very good to me.

JACK: (SUSPICIOUS) You're really leaving? No tricks? No scams?

BILLIE: I think I've had enough of those to last a life time. I'm going to try and make a fresh start.

JACK: You?

BILLIE: Look, I know you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth, everything's always been easy for you. Hell, you're even a millionaire again. You don't know what it's like having everyone look down on you... thinking they're better than you... treating you like... like...

JACK: (SOFTLY) A pariah?

BILLIE: What's that?

JACK: Nothing important...

BILLIE: Than that's me... nothing important...

JACK: No... that's not... never mind.

JACK SUDDENLY DIGS INTO HIS DESK DRAWER AND PULLS OUT A CHECK BOOK, WRITES A CHECK, TEARS IT OFF AND HANDS IT TO BILLIE.
BILLIE: What's this?

JACK: Severance pay.

BILLIE: (LOOKING CLOSELY AT THE CHECK) Five thousand dollars!

JACK: You were my assistant... I figured you'd earned it...

BILLIE: (SLIPPING CHECK DOWN HER DRESS FRONT) You know, Jack, you're really not such a bad guy...

JACK: Of course, I am...

BILLIE: No, I think maybe I had you pegged wrong.

JACK: You're obviously no judge of character.

BILLIE: Maybe so... But I think there just might be a nice guy in there somewhere...

JACK: Say good-bye, Billie.

BILLIE: Good-bye... Jack.

BILLIE WALKS OUT THE DOOR.
JACK: Nice... no... just someone who understands the meaning of "pariah."
OUT ON JACK'S FACE.

ACT V

CARVER AND CARVER INVESTIGATIONS. AS JOHN AND ABE BEGIN PICKING UP THE FILES SCATTERED AROUND THE ROOM, THERE IS A KNOCK AT THE DOOR. LEXIE ENTERS.
LEXIE: Abe?

ABE: Yeah?

LEXIE: I think you should come out here.

ABE: Can it wait? We're just getting started here...

LEXIE: No. I think you should come out here. Now.

ABE SHRUGS HIS SHOULDERS AS HE AND JOHN FOLLOW LEXIE OUT TO THE RECEPTION AREA. CARRIE IS SITTING AT HER DESK, WHICH NOW RESEMBLES ITS PREVIOUS STATE. SHE HAS A NOTE PAD IN FRONT OF HER.
ABE: So...?

LEXIE: (NODS AT CARRIE) Tell him.

CARRIE: I called the answering service.

ABE: Uh huh.

CARRIE: There were several messages.

LEXIE: Go on.

CARRIE: They were all clients. They were all cancellations.

ABE: How many?

CARRIE: Over half.

ABE: (SITS DOWN) Is this because of the burglary? Our falling for that stupid set-up?

LEXIE: How could people know?

CARRIE: (HOLDING UP A COPY OF THE CHRONICLE) It was this... I guess we forgot to pick it up when we came in...

ABE TAKES THE PAPER AND LOOKS AT THE HEADLINES, "SALEM MD AND FIANCÉE SHOT," THEN UNDERNEATH, IN SMALLER TYPE, "LOCAL PI'S BUNGLE MIGHT HAVE HELPED THE KILLER."
ABE: How could they? What are we going to do?
LEXIE CROSSES TO ABE AND STANDS BEHIND HIS CHAIR, HER ARMS WRAPPED AROUND HIS NECK.
LEXIE: It'll all work out. We'll be fine. You'll see.
JOHN AND CARRIE LOOK ON UNCOMFORTABLY.
JOHN: (CLEARS HIS THROAT) Look, why don't I give you guys some space? I can help clean up later?

ABE: Yeah, yeah. Thanks for the help...

JOHN: Sure, no problem. Let me see if I can find anything new.

ABE: OK.

JOHN: How about we meet later at the Pub?

ABE: Sounds good. We'll see you there.

JOHN LEAVES AS CARRIE GETS UP.
CARRIE: I think I'll... go get a cup of tea.
SHE WALKS BACK TO THE KITCHENETTE AS ABE AND LEXIE HOLD EACH OTHER.
ABE: What now?

LEXIE: I don't know. We'll find a way to make it. Somehow.

ABE: Lex, everything we've got is tied up in this business. If it goes under...

LEXIE: It won't. Just give it a little time. Things will... calm down. They'll work out.

ABE: I wish I could believe that.

LEXIE: Believe it, honey. Everything is gonna be fine.

ABE: (UNCONVINCED) Right.

THERE IS A KNOCK ON THE DOOR.
LEXIE: We're closed!
THERE IS ANOTHER KNOCK.
LEXIE: I said we're closed!
THE KNOCKING CONTINUES.
LEXIE: What is this, can't you understand me?
LEXIE OPENS THE DOOR, AND STEPS BACK IN SURPRISE WHEN SHE SEES ROMAN.
LEXIE: (CONT'D) Roman!

ABE: Roman? That was fast!

ROMAN: Hi partner. I just got in this morning. Hopped on the first plane I could when Ma called. What's the situation?

ABE: Not good. You heard about Carly?

ROMAN: Yeah. I did. I stopped by the hospital before I decided to swing by here.

LEXIE: How's Bo?

ROMAN: He's bad. First he lost Hope, now Carly. He's gonna be okay physically, but emotionally... I just don't know. They're keeping him under pretty close watch and under sedation.

ABE: What about Shawn-Douglas?

ROMAN: He's gonna be fine. But... well, no one's told him yet about Carly.

LEXIE: Poor kid. Losing two mothers like that...

ROMAN: Yeah. When I think about everything he's been through... But anyway... what happened here?

ABE: (SHRUGS AND GESTURES AROUND THE ROOM) We were burglarized.

ROMAN: Looks more like a tornado hit.

LEXIE: Yeah, tell us about it.

THERE IS A CLATTER FROM THE KITCHEN.
ROMAN: What's that?
CARRIE OPENS THE DOOR, CARRYING A STEAMING MUG.
CARRIE: Abe, Lex, I made tea for everyone if you... Dad!
CARRIE SETS HER MUG DOWN CAREFULLY AND RUNS TO ROMAN, THROWING HERSELF IN HIS ARMS.
ROMAN: Carrie! What are you doing here?

CARRIE: I work here!

ROMAN: Oh, really? (LOOKS AT ABE)

ABE: Well, we needed someone responsible to be a secretary, and she came highly recommended by my little brother...

ROMAN: And just when were you going to tell me about this?

CARRIE: I wanted to get my first paycheck... to make sure I was doing a good job...

ROMAN: (TO ABE AND LEXIE) And is she?

LEXIE: The best.

ROMAN: Then it's settled, you've got a first-class secretary. Just make sure you don't overwork her.

CARRIE: Dad...

ROMAN: OK, OK... To serious business, any idea who did this?

LEXIE: More than an idea. We're positive Alamain did this.

ROMAN: Any evidence?

ABE: Not a shred. But it was him.

ROMAN: How do you know?

LEXIE: The files were scattered all over, and parts of several file are missing. But there is a pattern. The only complete files that are missing are the ones having to do with our investigation of Alamain.

ROMAN: So you think he did this?

ABE: Who else?

ROMAN: And you think he was behind the shooting, too?

ABE: He wanted to keep Carly from taking his son. I'd say that goal was accomplished last night.

ROMAN: Anyone else with a motive?

LEXIE: Well, there's Vivian, of course. She was even more desperate to keep Nikki.

ABE: And there's also Ivan.

ROMAN: You think the butler did it?

ABE: Well, he is known for his devotion to Vivian...

ROMAN: True. There must be a way to prove one of them did this.

ABE: If there is, we'll find it...

ROMAN: And nail the bastard who shot my kid brother.

HOLD ON ROMAN'S FACE.

CUT TO: SALEM PLACE. BILLIE IS JUST WALKING OUT OF BALLISTIX WHEN SHE BUMPS INTO AUSTIN, WHO IS STARING OFF INTO SPACE.

BILLIE: Hey! Watch where you're going! Oh, Austin.

AUSTIN: Oh. Hi.

BILLIE: Hey, what's up? You look like you just lost your best friend!

AUSTIN: Yeah...

BILLIE: Problems with Carrie again?

AUSTIN: Uh huh. She...

BILLIE: She what?

AUSTIN: She pretty much said she thought it was best if we never saw each other again... that I should leave town.

BILLIE: I see... And do you want to leave town?

AUSTIN: I don't know. I'm thinking about it. What have you been doing today?

BILLIE: I went to the Hospital to see Bo. I felt pretty bad about Carly, so I took him some flowers.

AUSTIN: That was nice.

BILLIE: Yeah. He was sedated, so I just left them with a nurse and got outta there. (BEAT) Wanna get something to eat?

AUSTIN: No. I'm really not hungry.

BILLIE: Me neither.

THEY BEGIN TO WALK SLOWLY DOWN THE STREET.
BILLIE: (CONT'D) You know, Salem hasn't really been too good to us.

AUSTIN: Huh?

BILLIE: I mean, it was cool at first. But I think it's... maybe it's time to move on.

AUSTIN: Where? And how? We're barely scraping by.

BILLIE: Not anymore. Good old Jack Deveraux gave me five grand?

AUSTIN: Five grand? What for?

BILLIE: Let's just say he owed me a favor...

AUSTIN: Really?

BILLIE: Yeah, really. And I think we should take that money and go... Go anywhere! Vegas! Reno! The moon!

AUSTIN: You really want to leave?

BILLIE: Yeah. I really want to leave. I'm getting... itchy. I've been here too long. Don't you feel it?

AUSTIN: No. I like it here.

BILLIE: But...

AUSTIN: But, there's nothing to stay for. Carrie doesn't want me... I really don't have any friends...

BILLIE: Well, then. It's settled. We'll go home and pack tonight and tomorrow we hit the road!

AUSTIN: Where to?

BILLIE: I don't know... we'll just start driving, and wherever we pass that looks interesting, we'll stop and check it out. Oh... the places we'll go...

BILLIE HUGS HER BROTHER. OUT ON THE REEDS WALKING DOWN THE STREET.

ACT VI

BRADY PUB. ABE AND LEXIE ARE SITTING AT A TABLE WITH ROMAN, DISCUSSING THE RECENT EVENTS. PHILIP IS BEHIND THE BAR, AND KIMBERLY IS TALKING TO ONE OF THE WAITRESSES. IN PROGRESS.
ABE: I just wish we'd gotten some ID from the bogus client, but it would probably have been fake. I could kick myself...

LEXIE: Abe, honey, you're being to hard on yourself. I was taken in, too.

ROMAN: Lexie's right, partner. Hey, do you remember what the guy looked like?

ABE: I think so. Lex and Carrie saw him, too.

ROMAN: I could get in touch with one of the police artists, and have 'em draw up a sketch of him.

ABE: Not a bad idea, Roman, we could check the records and see if we find a booking picture of him, maybe get a name.

LEXIE: If we could find him, we might be able to find proof that it was Lawrence who hired him.

ROMAN: I just wish there was a way to prove that Lawrence was the one who fired that gun...

ABE: Me too, me too.

JOHN ARRIVES, ROMAN MOTIONS THAT HE SHOULD JOIN THEM.
ROMAN: Hey, John, pull up a chair.

ABE: Find out anything new?

JOHN: Believe it or not, I did. I called one of my old contacts at the Cop Shop, and he gave me the low-down on the preliminary police report.

ROMAN: Any hard evidence it was Lawrence?

JOHN: No, not really. All they have is that the perp must have snuck onto the boat while Carly and Bo were on the pier, and hit Shawn-Douglas, to keep him from waking up.

ROMAN: When I think of my nephew...

LEXIE: That is so awful... to hurt a child like that...

JOHN: Sure is. A lot of the guys have met Shawn-D, and they're pretty upset the little guy got hurt. Anyway, from there, the shooter either used his gun or Bo's.

ROMAN: Bo's gun? How would he have gotten Bo's gun?

JOHN: Bo apparently left it sitting at the front of the boat when he went to Carly, that's where they found the holster...

ROMAN: What about the bullet casings?

JOHN: No bullet casings were found, but they could have been tossed in the water, like the gun.

ABE: Did they get a bullet out of Bo to analyze?

JOHN: They did, but haven't gotten the report yet.

ROMAN: What about Carly?

JOHN: Coroner's report on the bullet wound in Carly confirms that the shooter was standing behind and slightly to the side of where Bo and Carly were standing. That places him either on the boat itself, or close by on the docks.

LEXIE: And the rain would have washed away any other traces that might have indicated where he was standing.

ROMAN: Does Lawrence have an alibi?

JOHN: It doesn't seem like the department is even discussing suspects at this point, although I'm sure that new Captain will consider Lawrence as a possibility.

ABE: This is going to sound terrible, but if Lawrence did shoot them, why didn't he finish the job?

LEXIE: You mean, make sure they were dead?

ABE: Exactly. Why would he go to the trouble of shooting them and not check to see if he'd succeeded?

JOHN: Maybe it was a warning?

ROMAN: Pretty serious warning. No, I think he must have been frightened off, by a passer-by or something.

LEXIE: A man out walking his dog found them... maybe he scared off the shooter.

JOHN: The Coroner figures Bo and Carly were laying on the dock as long as 20 minutes before the paramedics were called...

ABE: So even if Lawrence got scared off, why didn't he come back?

ROMAN: Must've lost his nerve. As smooth as Larry appears, he can be rattled. Bo got to him in the Lisanne Garnder investigation... That's how he caught Lawrence burying that stone cat.

LEXIE: Are you sure it was Lawrence? I mean, I realize he's the most likely suspect, but all the evidence so far is circumstancial.

ROMAN: Agreed. Besides, I'm not sure Larry would pull the trigger himself. Maybe he hired a pro.

ABE: Could be. But what if it's not Larry? How about Vivian or Ivan... or someone else?

LEXIE: Maybe it was someone else... someone with a grudge against Bo, or even Carly.

JOHN: Who'd go after Carly?

LEXIE: Maybe the family of a patient she failed to save...

ROMAN: Maybe someone from her past? I mean, how much did we really know about her?

JOHN: I guess not much, really. She lied to Bo about Larry for a long time.

ROMAN: Right. And we only recently learned about Nikki.

LEXIE: Come on, guys. What are you talking about? Carly was in Salem for almost three years, we know what kind of person she was.

JOHN: Yeah, I guess we were just tossing around the possibilities...

ROMAN: Hell, the way Salem's gotten it might just have been a random shooting.

JOHN: I'll tell you one thing, right now, I'm just happy to be able to think like a cop again, and work with some of the best.

ABE: That old suit and tie getting tighter and tighter?

LEXIE: Remember, there's always room for you at Carver and Carver...

JOHN: Carver, Carver and Black. Hmmmmm...

HOLD ON JOHN'S SPECULATIVE LOOK. THEN GO TO: THE PUB DOOR AS SHAWN AND CAROLINE COME IN. SHAWN WALKS UP TO THE TABLE AT WHICH ABE, LEXIE, ROMAN AND JOHN ARE SITTING.
SHAWN: Well, if it isn't my four favorite police minds. Tell me, have you come up with a way to prove Lawrence did the shooting?

ROMAN: No, Pop, not yet. We'll let you know... How's Bo doing?

CAROLINE: Not so good... he was really shaken hearing about Carly, but when we left, he'd told Shawn-Douglas and they were resting.

KIMBERLY AND PHILIP WALK OVER AND JOIN THE GROUP.
LEXIE: This has got to be so hard on that poor little boy...

KIMBERLY: It really is awful, for Bo and Shawn-D.

CARRIE AND JONAH ENTER, WITH MARCUS , KAYLA AND STEPHANIE.
CARRIE: You'll never believe who I found on the way here...

CAROLINE: Kayla! Oh, it's so good to see you! And Marcus...

ABE, LEXIE, JOHN, ROMAN, SHAWN, CAROLINE, KIM AND PHILIP ALL GREET KAYLA AND MARCUS WARMLY, MUCH HUGGING, BACK SLAPPING AND HAND SHAKING. EVERYTHING SETTLES DOWN SOMEWHAT, AS THEY ALL PULL UP TABLES/CHAIRS TO SIT TOGETHER.
SHAWN: Well, now, what a pleasure it is to see my darlin' girl again. How's my beautiful granddaughter?

KAYLA: Mostly hungry, Pop, and tired from the long plane ride.

CARRIE: I can take Stephanie upstairs for a snack, if you want...

KAYLA: That would be great, Carrie, thanks.

ABE: And we have to head back to Carver and Carver, we'll leave you Brady types to visit...

CARRIE: Oh, then I'd better head back with you to the office, sorry Aunt Kayla...

LEXIE: Nonsense! You stay here and be with family. Abe and I are just going to straighten up a bit and then head home. You just take it easy, honey, and we'll see you tomorrow.

CARRIE: Thanks, dear bosses!

ABE: Don't worry, as soon as we're back on track, you can count on lots of hours!

ABE AND LEXIE BID FAREWELLS TO EVERYONE AND DEPART.
JONAH: Carrie, you want some company?

CARRIE: Sure. You can pour the juice while I spread the peanut butter!

CARRIE AND JONAH TAKE STEPHANIE UPSTAIRS TO THE BRADY'S HOME.
JOHN: You don't mind if I stay, do you? I mean, it's family and all...

SHAWN: Don't be silly, John, you're as much family as anyone.

JOHN: Thanks. It'll be good to catch up on what's happening with our long-lost Kayla... (GRINS, CLEARLY HAPPY TO BE WITH THE FAMILY)

KAYLA: More important than that, though, what's been happening here. Carrie told us about Carly...

MARCUS: What a tragic loss. She was such a brilliant and wonderful person... she'll be missed.

CAROLINE: Yes, indeed she will. She had gotten to be like a daughter to me...

KIMBERLY: And a sister to me.

KAYLA: So how are Bo and Shawn-Douglas taking it?

CAROLINE: Bo had just told Shawn-D, and they were resting when we left.

PHILIP: When will they be released from the hospital?

SHAWN: We'll pick up Shawn-D and bring him back here later this afternoon, after he's had some more time with his Papa.

CAROLINE: They want to keep Bo under observation for a few days. He reacted so badly to the news about Carly, he set his recovery back a little bit.

KAYLA: Has he set a date for the funeral?

PHILIP: I meant to tell you when you came in. The funeral director called, and said that it could be done tomorrow or the next day. I wrote his number down here (HANDS SHAWN A NAPKIN)

SHAWN: Thank you, Philip, and you too, Kimmy, for taking care of everything here...

PHILIP: My pleasure. It fulfilled a secret fantasy of mine; to be a bartender, solve everyone's problems...

EVERYONE LAUGHS, HOLD ON JOHN, WHO IS SMILING AND RELAXED. HIS BEEPER GOES OFF.
JOHN: Damn, who is this... oh, no, it's the office. What could they want from me... I'll be right back...
JOHN GOES TO THE PHONE TO CALL THE OFFICE.
KAYLA: I'm glad you're bringing Shawn-D here, it'll be good to see him, and he can play with Stephanie...

CAROLINE: Good, then you've decided to stay with us, rather than that hotel nonsense you were talking about on the phone...

KAYLA: Yes... after having been away for so long, it'll be good to be with family.

KIMBERLY: Marcus, have you been spoken for in the rooms department yet?

MARCUS: Hey, I still live here, remember? I've just been at a conference... Boy, people don't see you for a while and they think you've left town...

KAYLA: Ignore him... it was a long flight...

MARCUS: It was fine until Stephanie decided I looked better with ice cream in my hair.

KAYLA: He made a real fashion statement...

EVERYONE LAUGHS, AS JOHN REJOINS THE GROUP, LOOKING NONE TOO PLEASED.
JOHN: That was the office, and for some reason, they just have to have me to sign some papers... it's always an emergency.... I'm afraid I'll have to go...

SHAWN: We'll keep you posted on what's up with the service and all.

JOHN: Thanks, Shawn. Come here you... (GRABS KAYLA, HUGS HER) Glad you're back...

KAYLA: Me, too. More than I'd imagined....

JOHN LEAVES AFTER FAREWELLS TO ALL ASSEMBLED. AS HE WALKS OUT, HE PULLS THE TIE HE'D REMOVED EARLIER AND STARTS TO TIE IT ON. HE LOOKS AT IT WITH LOATHING, AND THEN BACK FONDLY AT THE FAMILY STILL GATHERED, CLEARLY DEEP IN THOUGHT.

CUT TO: SMALL NURSES' STATION/LOUNGE. TOM AND ALICE ARE STANDING TOGETHER AT THE NURSES' STATION, TALKING, WHEN THE ELEVATOR DOOR OPENS AND DOUG AND JULIE WALK OUT.

JULIE: Grandma, darling...
JULIE AND ALICE HUG.
JULIE: (CONT'D) Grandpa...
TOM AND JULIE HUG, WHILE DOUG STANDS SLIGHTLY BACK.
ALICE: Julie... it seems so long. You look fabulous, as always.

JULIE: Thank you... I guess having Doug back in my life agrees with me.

ALICE: (TO DOUG) And are you just going to stand there and not come right over here and give me a kiss?

DOUG: I wasn't sure about my reception.

ALICE: I think that stunt you pulled on Julie was horrible. But since she looks so happy... come here.

DOUG AND ALICE HUG.
JULIE: I just wish we were here under happier circumstances.

ALICE: I know... I'm so sorry you had to leave Florence.

JULIE: After the bombing, nothing seemed the same anyway.

ALICE: Oh... I didn't think... we've been so preoccupied here... Were you close to that?

DOUG: We were right across the street, in a room with a view...

JULIE: It was heartbreaking to think of all that beauty in the Uffizi destroyed...

DOUG: And the loss of life...

JULIE: But... enough of Italy. How are Carly and Bo?

ALICE: You didn't get our message?

DOUG: No... what's wrong... it's not Shawn-D?

TOM: Shawn-Douglas is fine. He had a bump on his head... He needed a few stitches, but he'll be able to go home today.

JULIE: And Bo?

ALICE: Bo is sleeping right now, Shawn-D is with him...

JULIE: Grandma... there's something wrong, I can tell... Carly...

TOM: Julie, I don't know how to soften this... Carly didn't make it.

JULIE: Oh no...

DOUG HOLDS HER.
DOUG: How is Bo taking this?

ALICE: Not well.

BILL WALKS UP.
BILL: Julie! And Doug, you old dog.
BILL IMMEDIATELY SEES DOUG AND JULIE'S DISTRESS.
BILL: (CONT'D) I see they already told you about Carly.

DOUG: There wasn't anything that could be done?

BILL: I tried, the damage was just to great.

ALICE: How's Bo doing?

BILL: I gave him some pain medication to try and calm him down. He's so agitated, I'm afraid it could hinder his progress.

ALICE: This must be killing him... first Hope...

ALICE SEES DOUG'S REACTION.
ALICE: (CONT'D) I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking...

DOUG: That's all right, Alice. I've come to accept the fact my daughter is gone... But it's hard... she was so beautiful... so vital...

ALICE: She was special. Just like her mother...

ALICE REACHES OUT AND BRIEFLY TAKES DOUG'S HAND.
JULIE: Uncle Bill, Grandpa, may we see Bo and Shawn-D?

BILL: Maybe in an hour or so, they both seem to be sleeping now and they need the rest. Maybe we can go to the cafeteria and get some coffee...

JULIE: And you can tell me exactly what you're doing back in Salem.

BILL: (TAKING JULIE'S ARM) It's a deal.

DOUG TAKES JULIE'S OTHER ARM AND THE THREE WALK DOWN THE CORRIDOR.
DOUG: (TO TOM AND ALICE, OVER HIS SHOULDER) Aren't you two coming?

TOM: Right behind you... (LOOKS AT ALICE) I see that smile...

ALICE: I was just thinking how wonderful it is to have my family back together again.

OUT ON ALICE'S SMILE.

ACT VII

BRADY PUB KITCHEN. JONAH AND STEPHANIE ARE SITTING AT THE KITCHEN TABLE AS CARRIE MAKES A PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICH AT THE COUNTER. STEPHANIE IS PLAYING WITH A RAGGEDY ANN DOLL.
JONAH: You know, I just can't get over how cute your cousin is!

CARRIE: Yeah, I know. She's such a little angel. She looks just like her dad... I remember how happy Steve was when she was born.

JONAH: Yeah. I can see why.

CARRIE: He was dead less than a year later.

JONAH: Carrie, are you okay?

CARRIE: No. I'm not.

JONAH: What's wrong? Can I help?

CARRIE: No. Thanks for asking.

SHE CUTS THE SANDWICH INTO FOUR TRIANGLES AND BRINGS IT OVER TO THE TABLE, WHERE STEPHANIE GRABS IT AND BEGINS EATING.
JONAH: What's the deal, Carrie? Is it this whole thing with Bo and Carly?

CARRIE: Yeah.

JONAH: Yeah? That's all you have to say is "yeah"? C'mon, spit it out, girl!

CARRIE: Look at my family, Jonah.

JONAH: Yeah, what about them? They're a little goofy, but they're okay.

CARRIE: Look at them. Look at Kim, my dad, Kayla and Uncle Bo. What do they all have in common?

JONAH: Um... They all have your grandpa's temper?

CARRIE: Think about it. Kim's divorced. Kayla's a widow, Bo lost first his wife and now Carly...

JONAH: Your dad and Marlena have done pretty good.

CARRIE: Oh, yeah. My dad was gone for years, and I was raised by someone else. Marlena had an affair with John... Sometimes I don't know if they'll make it. I really don't. It's like the Brady curse. No Brady is allowed to be happy.

JONAH: Now that's ridiculous.

CARRIE: Maybe. Maybe not. You have to admit, we Bradys have a pretty bad track record, though.

JONAH: Well, you can be the one to change it!

CARRIE: I don't think so. I've made up my mind.

JONAH: To do what? To join a convent? To live on top of a mountain and stare at your belly button?

CARRIE: I'm serious, Jonah. I've decided I'm never falling in love, not ever again.

JONAH: Carrie...

CARRIE: It just hurts too much. I don't see how they've all handled it. Aunt Kayla, Uncle Bo... It hurt bad enough saying good-bye to Austin. I never want to go through what they went through.

JONAH: Hey, that's understandable. But there's nothing saying you'll have to go through that.

CARRIE: Face it, the odds are against me.

JONAH: But you don't know if you don't try...

CARRIE: Sorry. I'm not willing to take that kind of a risk.

JONAH: You know, some day you'll meet the right guy. And you'll fall in love, and live happily ever after.

CARRIE: No. And I don't wanna talk about it anymore.

JONAH: Okay, okay. Touchy, aren't we?

CARRIE: Jonah...

JONAH: Okay. Subject change. So. (BEAT) How about them Knicks?

HOLD ON CARRIE'S FACE.

CUT TO: ALAMAIN LIVING ROOM. LAWRENCE COMES DOWN THE STEPS, KNOTTING HIS TIE. WHEN HE GETS TO THE BOTTOM OF THE STAIRS, HE TURNS ON A LIGHT. HE SEES NICHOLAS SITTING ON THE EDGE OF THE SOFA, HANDS CLASPED IN HIS LAP, STARING STRAIGHT AHEAD.

LAWRENCE: Nicholas? Nicholas, how long have you been sitting down here in the dark?

NICHOLAS: All night, I guess.

LAWRENCE WALKS OVER AND SITS DOWN ON THE SOFA NEXT TO HIS SON.
LAWRENCE: Would you like to talk to me about it?

NICHOLAS: I couldn't sleep last night.

LAWRENCE: More nightmares?

NICHOLAS: I kept hearing her... screaming.

LAWRENCE: Carly?

NICHOLAS: She was screaming at me... said I belonged to her, and she was gonna take me away and never let me go... (HE BEGINS TO TREMBLE)

LAWRENCE: Nicholas...

NICHOLAS: And I was so scared that I'd never see you or Aunt Viv again... and then I heard her screaming... and there was all this blood...

LAWRENCE: (REACHES OVER AND TAKES NICHOLAS' HAND) Please, stop. There's something I have to tell you.

NICHOLAS: What?

LAWRENCE: It's about Carly.

NICHOLAS: What? What's she doing now?!?

LAWRENCE: She's... she's not doing anything, Nikki.

NICHOLAS: Then why do you look so sad?

LAWRENCE: Nicholas. Your mother is dead.

NICHOLAS: She's what?

LAWRENCE: Last night, when you saw the blood on the dock... Carly and Bo were both shot. Carly died at the hospital.

NICHOLAS: Oh.

LAWRENCE: Bo and Shawn-Douglas were both injured also.

NICHOLAS: Are they gonna be okay?

LAWRENCE: They're in the hospital, but they'll be just fine.

NICHOLAS: Who did it?

LAWRENCE: We don't know. And that's why we need to make sure no one knows you were out last night.

NICHOLAS: Oh.

LAWRENCE: Will you be all right?

NICHOLAS: I guess.

LAWRENCE: Would you like to talk about it?

NICHOLAS: I guess... I'm confused.

LAWRENCE: Just confused?

NICHOLAS: And kind of sad.

LAWRENCE: So am I.

NICHOLAS: Really?

LAWRENCE: Really. Katerina meant... everything to me, once. And she gave me a wonderful son. I suppose there's a part of me that will always love her.

NICHOLAS: Is it wrong if I'm kind of happy she's dead?

LAWRENCE: Why are you happy?

NICHOLAS: I'm glad she can't take me away from you and Aunt Viv. But I'm also sort of sad... I mean, she was my mother.

LAWRENCE: Yes, she was.

NICHOLAS: I always wanted a mom. I used to wonder what it would be like, having a real family... But I... I don't think Carly was the kind of mom I wanted.

LAWRENCE: Why not?

NICHOLAS: I think she wanted me... but I don't think she really loved me. Not like Aunt Viv.

LAWRENCE: No one loves you like me and your Aunt Vivian...

NICHOLAS: I guess I should feel bad cause Carly was my mom, but I'm kind of glad she's dead. Does that make me a bad person?

LAWRENCE: No, Nicholas, it doesn't. Carly really was a stranger to you. She may have given birth to you, but she really wasn't your mother. Vivian is the one who raised you, and that makes her more of your mother than Carly was.

NICHOLAS: I'm glad there's nothing wrong with me then. I wish I could feel a little sadder, though.

LAWRENCE: I feel sad enough for both of us, I think.

NICHOLAS: I'm sorry you're sad.

LAWRENCE: Don't worry, I'll be all right. I've got you, and I've got your Aunt Vivian.

VIVIAN ENTERS.
VIVIAN: Did I hear my name?

LAWRENCE: Yes, you did. I was just telling Nicholas about Carly.

VIVIAN: Oh. (TO NICHOLAS) How are you, dear?

NICHOLAS: I'm okay, I guess. I was just telling Lawrence I wish I could be more upset. But I'm not.

VIVIAN: That's fine, Nikki. You really didn't know Carly all that well. You can't be expected to be heartbroken just because she was your mother. You hardly knew her.

NICHOLAS: I still feel kind of bad about it, though.

VIVIAN: Of course you do, darling. But now we can all be together. You, me and Lawrence.

NICHOLAS: Like a real family?

VIVIAN: Darling, we are a real family.

HOLD ON VIVAN'S TRIUMPHANT SMILE.

CUT TO: BO'S HOSPITAL ROOM. BO AND SHAWN-DOUGLAS ARE LYING ON BO'S BED, SLEEPING. BO IS MUMBLING IN HIS SLEEP, TOSSING AND OCCASIONALLY SAYING "NO", AND CALLING FOR HOPE AND CARLY. HE TOSSES HARDER, AND THEN SHUDDERS HIMSELF AWAKE, GETS HIS BEARINGS. HE LOOKS DOWN AND SEES HIS SON, STILL SLEEPING PEACEFULLY, AND REARRANGES THE BOY IN HIS ARMS. AS BO LOOKS DOWN ON HIS SON, AND SEES THE STAINS OF DRIED TEARS ON HIS FACE, HE BEGINS TO CRY GENTLY, TOO. AS BO HOLDS THE SLEEPING SHAWN-DOUGLAS, MUSIC SWELLS, GUNS AND ROSES "NOVEMBER RAIN." AND OUT. FADE TO BLACK.
