TEASER

JANET'S OFFICE. JANET IS SITTING AT HER DESK, DRY-SWALLOWING 4 EXTRA-STRENGTH TYLENOL AS MORGAN ENTERS.
MORGAN: Isn't it a little early for that? And isn't 4 double the dosage?

JANET: Morgan, do you have any idea how many bottles of this stuff I've gone through since the Manning/Brady case began?

MORGAN: (SIGHS) I have an idea. I've been on antacids myself.

JANET: I'm glad we get insurance with this job. We're both gonna be basket cases by the time this mess is over.

MORGAN: Tell me about it. So, what's on deck for today?

JANET: Well, we may have a break. Maybe.

MORGAN: Yeah, sure.

JANET: We've agreed that Carly Manning just may be the key here? Right?

MORGAN: Right.

JANET: If you go on the assumption that Manning was the target, and that Brady just happened to be in the way, it makes a little more sense.

MORGAN: Still doesn't explain why the killer didn't finish them both off.

JANET: Shut up, Morgan.

MORGAN: (LAUGHS) Sure, boss.

JANET: Okay. We know Manning was under investigation by Interpol. The key may be in their files.

MORGAN: Which are classified.

JANET: Taken care of.

MORGAN: What? What do you mean?

JANET: (NONCHALANTLY BUFFING HER NAILS ON HER SILK JACKET) There's an Interpol agent coming over today. With the files.

MORGAN: How'd you manage that one?

JANET: Our clearance finally got processed and granted. So maybe, just maybe, we'll find the answer today.

HOLD ON JANET'S ANTICIPATION.

CUT TO: JACK & JENNIFER'S LIVING ROOM. JACK IS SITTING ON THE SOFA READING THE PAPER WHEN THE DOORBELL RINGS.

JACK: Is someone going to get that?
THE BELL RINGS AGAIN.
JACK: (CONT'D) Well, I guess someone is...
JACK GRUDGINGLY GETS UP AND WALKS OVER TO THE DOOR. JACK OPENS THE DOOR TO FIND MAGGIE.
JACK: Maggie? What a pleasant surprise!

MAGGIE: Surprise? Jennifer invited me...

JACK: That's news to me...

JENNIFER ENTERS THE ROOM FROM THE KITCHEN.
JENNIFER: Hi Aunt Maggie!

MAGGIE: Jennifer, am I mixed up? You asked me to stop by for breakfast today, right?

JENNIFER: No, you're not mixed up. I just didn't tell Jack.

JACK: Didn't tell Jack? Is there a reason you didn't tell Jack?

JENNIFER: Because I wanted to get the two of you together to talk about this day care idea. And I knew one of you would try to avoid the subject.

JACK: (INNOCENTLY) Who, me? But I do believe I have a meeting...

JENNIFER: Hold it right there, Jack.

JACK: (FREEZING IN HIS TRACKS) Yes, bundt cake?

JENNIFER: Don't you bundt cake me! You are going to sit down right now and discuss this, do you understand me?

JACK: (SIGHS RESIGNEDLY) Yes...

JACK AND MAGGIE SIT AT THE DINING TABLE. JENNIFER GOES INTO THE KITCHEN. JACK LOOKS AT MAGGIE AND SPREADS HIS HANDS IN A GESTURE OF RESIGNATION, AS JENNIFER COMES OUT OF THE KITCHEN CARRYING A TRAY OF BAGELS, ORANGE JUICE AND CROISSANTS. JENNIFER SITS DOWN AS JACK AND MAGGIE HELP THEMSELVES.
JENNIFER: Okay, I've gone over a little bit of this with each of you. As you both know, lack of child care is one of the biggest problems in this country. People would love to be able to bring their kids to work and drop them off where they can check in on them.

JACK: And that's what you'd like to do at the Spectator?

JENNIFER: Yes, having a day care center at the Spectator would be perfect.

JACK: It would be expensive.

MAGGIE: Not necessarily... Having the Center in the Spectator building means no rent for the Center, and therefore lower prices...

JACK: But the teachers, the equipment...

JENNIFER: I'm sure we could get local support...

JACK: But the expense... the paperwork... the insurance... I just can't make a commitment right now. Maybe later...

JENNIFER: Thank you!

JACK: I didn't say yes!

JENNIFER: You will.

THE PHONE RINGS. JENNIFER GETS UP FROM THE TABLE TO ANSWER IT.
JENNIFER: (CONT'D) Excuse me...

JACK: Maggie, are you sure you're willing to help with this?

MAGGIE: Positive. Both my daughters are off in Nashville... Working with other children will make me feel a little less lonesome for them...

JACK: Oh.

JENNIFER COMES BACK TO THE TABLE.
JENNIFER: That was Julie. She wants to meet with me at her office. And Maggie, she wants you there, too. Uncle Mickey told her you were here.

MAGGIE: Did she say why?

JENNIFER: No, she was very secretive.

MAGGIE: I wonder what she's up to now?

JACK: I'll bet I know...

JENNIFER: Jack, what kind of plans are you and Julie hatching?

JACK: That's for me to know and you to find out.

JENNIFER: Jack, sometimes you are a royal pain in the...

JACK: Please, what will your aunt think?

MAGGIE: (LAUGHING) Her aunt will think that you sound like an old married couple...

JACK: Well, it has been two years...

JENNIFER: The best two years of my life.

JENNIFER LOOKS AT JACK AND GIVES HIM A DAZZLING SMILE.
JACK: (JACK LOOKS AT JENNIFER) Same here. (BEAT) (TO MAGGIE) That's how she wins every argument.

MAGGIE: Smart woman...

JACK: You don't have to tell me. Now you ladies get going. I don't want you to be late for Julie.

JENNIFER: We need to drop off Abby at Grandma's.

JACK: I'll do that. You go see Julie.

JENNIFER: Oh... This must be important.

JACK: It is. Scoot. Leave. Vamos! Skedaddle!

JENNIFER: Come on, Aunt Maggie. Let's get going. The sooner we leave, the sooner we'll uncover their plot.

HOLD ON JENNIFER AND MAGGIE'S SMILES.

CUT TO: BO'S BOAT/INT. BO, IN UNIFORM, IS DRINKING COFFEE. HE PUTS HIS MUG DOWN ON A TABLE AND WALKS OVER TO A MIRROR TO STRAIGHTEN OUT HIS TIE.

BO: All right, Brady. Time to show everyone down at the station what you're made out of.
SUDDENLY, BO HEARS A HUGE CRASH FOLLOWED BY A SCREAM COMING FROM SHAWN-DOUGLAS' ROOM.
BO: (CONT'D) Shawn-Douglas!
BO RUNS INTO SHAWN-DOUGLAS' ROOM. THE MIRROR IN HIS ROOM IS SHATTERED. PIECES OF BROKEN GLASS ARE EVERYWHERE. SHAWN-D IS SCREAMING, CRUMPLED INTO THE FETAL POSITION ON THE FLOOR. BO RUSHES UP TO SHAWN-D AND BENDS DOWN NEXT TO HIM.
BO: (CONT'D) Shawn-Douglas, are you okay?! What happened?!
SHAWN-DOUGLAS CONTINUES TO SCREAM. BO TRIES TO CHECK HIS SON FOR INJURIES. BO SEES THAT SHAWN-DOUGLAS' HAND IS COVERED WITH BLOOD.
BO: (CONT'D) Oh my God!
BO TRIES TO GET A GOOD LOOK AT SHAWN-D'S HAND, BUT SHAWN-D STARTS TO SQUIRM UNCONTROLLABLY.
BO: (CONT'D) Shawn-D, you've got to let me see your hand...
SHAWN-D CONTINUES TO SCREAM. BO LOOKS FRANTICALLY AROUND THE ROOM, GRABS A PILLOW FROM THE BED AND PULLS THE PILLOWCASE OFF OF IT. BO TRIES TO QUIET SHAWN-D.
BO: (CONT'D) Hold still sailor. Let me put this on your hand... we've got to stop the bleeding...
BO MANAGES TO GET THE PILLOWCASE WRAPPED AROUND SHAWN-D'S HAND. THEN HE PICKS UP HIS CRYING SON.
BO: (CONT'D) Shawn-D, don't worry, everything is going to be all right... I'm taking you to the hospital...
OUT ON BO, CARRYING SHAWN-D.

ACT I

DOUG & JULIE'S BEDROOM. DOUG AND JULIE, DRESSED IN ROBES, ARE HAVING BREAKFAST AT A SMALL TABLE NEAR THE OPEN DOOR TO THE VERANDA. THE ROOM IS BARE, EXCEPT FOR THE TABLE AND THE BED. THERE ARE A FEW BOXES ALONG ONE WALL.
JULIE: Can we have breakfast like this every day? (GESTURES TO VERANDA) I love being able to look at this splendid scenery.

DOUG: (LOOKING AT JULIE) I agree, the view is magnificent.

JULIE: I still can't believe that we're actually in this house. It's like a dream.

DOUG: It was a whirlwind, wasn't it? We were lucky that the previous owner quickly needed the money from the sale and was willing to forgo the usual waiting period.

JULIE: That's us, darling. Lucky in love, lucky in everything...

DOUG: (KISSING JULIE'S HAND) Speaking of love, have you thought any more about marrying me?

JULIE: (TEASING) Wasn't one "yes" enough?

DOUG: I was talking about the trivial details. A date, place, guest list, that sort of thing.

JULIE: Oh well... I hadn't really thought that far ahead, what with the move and all.

DOUG: I don't want to wait too long, Fair Lady.

JULIE: Neither do I.

JULIE LEANS OVER THE TABLE TO LIGHTLY KISS DOUG.
JULIE: (CONT'D) What kind of ceremony do you want? Shall we write our own vows, as we did for our first wedding?

DOUG: We could... Will you wear Addie's pearls?

JULIE: Of course... (HER EYES WELL WITH TEARS AT THE THOUGHT OF HER MOTHER)

DOUG: Shall I sing for you, as I did at our second wedding?

JULIE: You can sing for me any time, any place...

DOUG: (SOFTLY SINGING) [notes] The most beautiful girl in the world...

JULIE: (SIGHS) We'll never get any plans made if you keep distracting me...

DOUG STOPS SINGING.
DOUG: Whatever my Fair Lady desires.

JULIE: What she desires is your happiness. Have you thought about what you want to do? Do you still want to run Wings?

DOUG: I want to run the club, but I'd like to make some changes.

JULIE: Anything you want.

DOUG: Why did I know you'd say that? OK, tell me how this sounds. I've decided to go with something totally new... a "world beat" club.

JULIE: "World beat"?

DOUG: You know, music of the world... Jazz, blues, country, folk, classical... I'd like to have musicians play the music of Africa, Mexico, Ireland, Egypt... You name it, we'll have it.

JULIE: That's a wonderful idea! It will certainly generate some excitement in Salem.

DOUG: I hope so. It will be a lot of work, but I'm sure we can make a go of it.

JULIE: With you in charge, darling, I know it will be a success. Just let me know what I can do to help.

DOUG: You can simply be my inspiration. Otherwise, I think you're already booked.

JULIE: I know. (SIGHS) There are so many things to see to. The wedding, the magazine, the club, this house. I feel like I've barely had time for friends and family since we got back.

DOUG: Why don't you make some time?

JULIE: That's it!

DOUG: What's it?

JULIE: Let's make some time for family and friends. Let's throw a housewarming party.

DOUG: Perfect!

JULIE: We can invite the whole family, all our friends... It will be our home-coming celebration. (SHE LOOKS AROUND) But there are some things we'll need to do beforehand... like unpacking and getting some more furniture.

DOUG: We've got a bed, what more do we need?

JULIE: (FEIGNING SHOCK) Why sir, just what are you implying?

DOUG COMES AROUND THE TABLE AND PULLS JULIE TO HER FEET AND INTO HIS EMBRACE.
DOUG: Come with me and I'll show you exactly what I mean...
HOLD ON THEIR EMBRACE.

CUT TO: ALAMAIN LIVING ROOM. VIVIAN IS SITTING ON THE COUCH READING THE NEWSPAPER WHEN LAWRENCE COMES IN. HE GOES OVER TO THE TABLE AND POURS HIMSELF A GLASS OF ORANGE JUICE

VIVIAN: (SWEETLY) Lawrence, darling, would you please pour me a glass of orange juice?

LAWRENCE: You are quite capable of getting it yourself, Vivian. Or better yet, call Ivan and let him pour it for you.

VIVIAN: You can't still be angry about what I did for Ivan? I owe it to him to protect him.

LAWRENCE: You don't owe him anything. You have paid him well these past years... I think that's compensation enough for loyalty... on both sides.

VIVIAN: What would you know of loyalty? The only person to whom you've ever shown any true allegiance is yourself.

LAWRENCE: I wouldn't be so quick to judge, Vivian. I still haven't thrown you out of the house. I'd say that's proof of my near filial devotion.

VIVIAN GETS UP AND POURS HERSELF A GLASS OF ORANGE JUICE.
VIVIAN: Or it's proof that you want me where you can spy on me.
VIVIAN SITS DOWN.
LAWRENCE: Why would I want to spy on you? Haven't we always been brutally honest with each other?

VIVIAN: Brutal, perhaps. Honest, never.

LAWRENCE: Then you doubt me? Doubt is such an ugly word. Doubt implies suspicion, mistrust, disbelief...

VIVIAN: Then give me a reason to believe, Lawrence. Tell me what you were doing on the night of Carly's murder.

LAWRENCE: No.

VIVIAN: May I ask why not?

LAWRENCE: It's best for all concerned.

VIVIAN: Best for whom? The tension between us is destroying Nikki. Just tell me the truth and let's be done with it.

LAWRENCE: Vivian, need I remind you that Nicholas is mine.

VIVIAN: Don't be so sure, Lawrence. Perhaps the truth will set us all free.

HOLD ON VIVIAN'S WARNING.

CUT TO: HOSPITAL EXAMINING ROOM/CORRIDOR. THE E.R. NURSE, ADA LINDSEY, IS ABOUT TO GIVE SHAWN-DOUGLAS A SHOT TO NUMB HIS HAND. SHAWN-DOUGLAS SEES THE NEEDLE AND BEGINS TO CRY. BO PUTS HIS ARMS AROUND HIS SON.

ADA: Now Shawn-Douglas, this is going to hurt for just a second... It will feel like someone is pinching you, but in a few minutes all the pain will go away and your hand will just feel numb, ok?

SHAWN-D: (STARTING TO CALM DOWN A LITTLE) Ok.

ADA: Now hold still...

ADA GIVES SHAWN-DOUGLAS THE SHOT. SHAWN-DOUGLAS WINCES, BUT DOES NOT CRY OUT.
ADA: (CONT'D) While we're waiting for the Novocaine to take affect, I'll go get Dr. Ryan.
ADA LEAVES THE ROOM. BO RELEASES SHAWN-DOUGLAS AND TURNS TO HIM.
BO: Shawn-D, what happened? Did the mirror fall on you?

SHAWN-D: No.

BO: Then how did you get hurt? How did the mirror get broken?

SHAWN-D: I dunno.

DOCTOR RYAN COMES IN AND GETS READY TO STITCH SHAWN-DOUGLAS' HAND.
BO: Son, you were alone in the room. Your mirror is smashed, your hand is cut... Did you hit the mirror?
DOCTOR RYAN LOOKS AT BO, CONCERNED. SHAWN-DOUGLAS TURNS AWAY FROM BO, WITHOUT SPEAKING.
BO: (CONT'D) (NEAR TEARS) Son, I wish you would talk to me. It hurts me to see you so upset.
SHAWN-D IGNORES BO. BO ALMOST PLEADINGLY LOOKS AT DOCTOR RYAN.
RYAN: So Shawn-Douglas, how does your hand feel?

SHAWN-D: I don't feel anything anymore.

RYAN: Good, I'm going to take these bandages off. I want you to hold your hand out to the side and turn your head the other direction... ok?

SHAWN-D: Ok.

RYAN STARTS SEWING SHAWN-DOUGLAS' HAND. RYAN TALKS TO KEEP SHAWN-DOUGLAS DISTRACTED. BO LOOKS ON, UNSURE OF WHAT TO DO OR SAY.
RYAN: So Shawn-Douglas, what grade are you going to be in?

SHAWN-D: Second.

RYAN: Did you have a good Summer?

SHAWN-D: It was fun until a few weeks ago (BEAT) when Carly died.

RYAN: I'm sure that you miss her. I know we miss her at the hospital.

SHAWN-D: It isn't fair.

RYAN: No, it isn't, but doesn't it make you feel better knowing that she's watching you from heaven?

SHAWN-D: (SUDDENLY ANGRY) I don't want to talk about Carly anymore. I'm sick of talking about her.

BOTH BO AND DOCTOR RYAN ARE SHOCKED AT THIS OUTBURST.
RYAN: OK, Shawn-D, we won't talk about her anymore, just don't move your hand...

BO: Shawn-D, why...

RYAN SIGNALS BO THAT HE (RYAN) CAN HANDLE IT.
RYAN: So what do you want to talk about?

SHAWN-D: Nothing.

RYAN: Nothing is a dull subject, don't you think?

SHAWN-D: I dunno.

RYAN: Well, it looks as if I'm about done here... just a couple more...

RYAN FINISHES WITH THE STITCHES.
RYAN: (CONT'D) There... all done. You're now the proud owner of 21 stitches in 3 different cuts. I'm going to get the nurse to bandage your hand... And she may even have a surprise for you for being such a good patient.

SHAWN-D: (LOOKING AT HIS HAND) Ok.

RYAN: (TO BO) Mr. Brady, may I speak to you outside?

BO: Of course. (TO SHAWN-DOUGLAS) Son, I'll be right back, ok?

SHAWN-D: Sure.

BO AND DOCTOR RYAN WALK OUT INTO THE CORRIDOR. ADA WALKS PAST THEM INTO THE EXAMINING ROOM.
RYAN: I'm going to give you a prescription for a pain-killer. Try to keep the dosage at the minimum, if you can. (STARTS WRITING OUT THE PRESCRIPTION AND INSTRUCTIONS) And for the next couple days, try to keep his hand elevated and don't let him get it wet. In three days, come back and we'll change the bandages. The stitches should come out in 8-10 days.

BO: Ok, is that it?

RYAN: No. I wanted to discuss your son's mental health.

BO: Shawn-D is fine... He has been through a lot recently and he needs some time to recover.

RYAN: (BLUNT) Mr. Brady, I think he needs to see a professional.

BO: You mean a shrink? We don't need one. Shawn-D knows he can always talk to me.

RYAN: I understand you and your son are close. I assume you've tried talking to him.

BO: I have. I thought we'd worked this all out.

RYAN: Apparently not.

BO: I should be able to help my own son... (BEAT) But I confess, his behavior is beginning to scare me.

RYAN: (WRITING ON A PIECE OF PAPER) Here's the name and number of a new child psychologist at the hospital. She has a great reputation for helping troubled children. (HANDS BO THE PIECE OF PAPER) At least think about it.

BO: Thanks Doctor, I will... because I don't know what else to do.

OUT ON BO'S WORRY.

ACT II

HOSPITAL ADMITTING ROOM/ELEVATOR. A CLERK IS SITTING BEHIND THE DESK, WORKING AT A COMPUTER. CARRIE WALKS IN, CARRYING A SMALL BRIEFCASE. SHE GOES HESITATINGLY TO THE DESK.
CARRIE: Um. I'm here to check in?

CLERK: Hi. Why don't you have a seat and fill out these papers, and I'll check on your room assignment, okay?

THE CLERK HANDS CARRIE A THICK STACK OF PAPERS AND A CLIPBOARD. CARRIE SITS DOWN AND BEGINS FILLING OUT THE PAPERS.
CARRIE: (TO HERSELF) Okay. Name is easy enough. So's address. Family history? Um. I guess I'll wing that one. Inoculations? How am I supposed to remember all that stuff?
CARRIE IS CHEWING ON HER PENCIL IN FRUSTRATION AS MARCUS WALKS UP BEHIND HER AND PUTS HIS HAND ON HER SHOULDER.
MARCUS: Hi! You made it!

CARRIE: Marcus! I'm so glad to see you! Can you translate all these papers into English for me?

MARCUS LOOKS AT THE PAPERS AND HELPS HER FILL THEM OUT.
CARRIE: Thanks. I didn't know you had to have a medical degree just to fill out the paperwork.

MARCUS: It's not that bad. Just takes some getting used to. And you need a law degree, not a medical degree.

CARRIE: Whatever.

MARCUS: I got your room assignment... Here's your ID bracelet (HE FASTENS THE BRACELET ON HER WRIST) Are you ready to go?

CARRIE: (TAKING A DEEP BREATH) Yeah. I think.

MARCUS PICKS UP HER SUITCASE AS THEY WALK TOWARD THE ELEVATORS.
MARCUS: Nervous?

CARRIE: Some.

MARCUS: Still want to go ahead with this?

CARRIE: Yes. I just wish I knew now what's going to happen.

MARCUS: There's really no way to predict it. All you can do is have faith and believe everything will be okay.

CARRIE: I'm trying.

THEY GET ONTO THE ELEVATOR. HOLD ON THEIR FACES.

CUT TO: CARRIE'S HOSPITAL ROOM/CORRIDOR. MARCUS AND CARRIE GET OFF THE ELEVATOR AND WALK TO ONE OF THE HOSPITAL ROOMS. JONAH IS WAITING INSIDE. THERE ARE 2 BEDS, AND ONE OF THEM HAS A CURTAIN PULLED AROUND IT, SHIELDING IT FROM VIEW.

CARRIE: Jonah! Hi!

JONAH: Hey there! I was starting to worry.

CARRIE: Marcus had to rescue me from the paperwork monster.

JONAH: Yuck.

MARCUS: Look, why don't you two talk for a few minutes while I get a nurse to start your tests?

CARRIE: Okay.

MARCUS WALKS OUT THE DOOR.
JONAH: So. Did you study for these tests? Think you'll pass them?

CARRIE: (GIGGLING NERVOUSLY) You're terrible. Bad, Carver. Very bad.

JONAH: Will you be okay?

CARRIE: I sure hope so. I'm nervous, but...

JONAH: It'll all be over soon. (HE REACHES AND COVERS HER HAND WITH HIS)

CARRIE: Yeah. One way or another.

JONAH: So. Do you want to meet your roomie?

CARRIE: Sure... But they look like they're sleeping or something...

JONAH: Or something.... (HE DRAWS AWAY THE CURTAIN TO REVEAL A GIANT WHITE TEDDY BEAR IN THE BED NEXT TO HER) Surprise!

CARRIE: (LAUGHING) That's great! Thanks Jonah!

JONAH: What are friends for, huh?

CARRIE: Seriously. Thanks for everything. Thanks for being here for me.

JONAH: Well, it's not like it's a big deal or anything.

CARRIE: It is to me.

JONAH SQUIRMS, AND LOOKS UP IN RELIEF AS A NURSE COMES IN.
NURSE: We're ready, Miss Brady.

JONAH: Looks like it's time to start your tests. I better disappear.

CARRIE: Okay.

JONAH: Bye. And good luck.

JONAH HUGS CARRIE, THEN WALKS OUT THE DOOR, BLOWING HER A KISS. HOLD ON CARRIE LOOKING AFTER JONAH.

CUT TO: JULIE'S OFFICE/MIDSUMMER. EVE IS SITTING AT HER DESK, FILING HER NAILS, WHEN RICHARD COMES AROUND THE CORNER.

RICHARD: I have an appointment with Julie.
EVE STARTS AND TOSSES THE NAIL FILE IN A DRAWER.
EVE: Oh... Mr. Hunt. I am so sorry, I didn't see you there.

RICHARD: I noticed.

EVE: I have been literally working my fingers to the bone... and... and... I broke a nail and I didn't want to snag it on anything...

RICHARD: (BEMUSED) I see...

EVE: (GETTING UP AND SITTING ON THE EDGE OF THE DESK) And you wouldn't want me to do that, would you?

RICHARD: Of course not...

EVE: (EXTENDING A LEG AND RUNNING HER HAND UP IT) I mean, stockings can be such an expense...

RICHARD: I'm sure...

EVE: (CROSSING HER LEGS) And a snag looks so tacky... I like my legs to look nice... And they do look nice, don't you think?

BEFORE RICHARD CAN ANSWER, JULIE COMES OUT OF HER OFFICE.
JULIE: Richard, I thought I heard you out here. (SPOTTING EVE PERCHED ON THE EDGE OF THE DESK) Eve, thank you for... entertaining Mr. Hunt, but I think it's time we began our meeting.

EVE: But we were just getting acquainted...

RICHARD: (RELIEVED) Maybe some other time, Miss Donovan... I really must meet with Julie.

EVE: (SMILING SWEETLY) Business before pleasure, they say.

RICHARD WEAKLY SMILES AND NEARLY RUNS INTO JULIE'S OFFICE. JULIE HANDS EVE A STACK OF PAPERS.
JULIE: Eve, file these. And get me the McKee folder.

EVE: Ya woll mein general!

JULIE: Excuse me?

EVE: Yes, Julie... I mean... Mrs. Williams... right away...

JULIE: I thought that's what you said.

JULIE WALKS INTO HER OFFICE AND SHUTS THE DOOR.
EVE: Damn! I almost had him hooked... Next time... (LOOKING AT HER SHORT SKIRT AND PULLING IT UP ANOTHER INCH) Hmmm... maybe another inch would do the trick...

GO TO: JULIE'S OFFICE. JULIE WALKS TO THE CHAIR BEHIND HER DESK AND SITS DOWN. RICHARD IS SEATED ACROSS FROM HER.
RICHARD: Thank you. I think you may have saved my life.

JULIE: (LAUGHS) Sorry, I should have warned you about Eve. She's on a husband quest.

RICHARD: A husband quest?

JULIE: Don't ask. But suffice to say, if she ever finds about you or your family... Well, your bachelor days could be over.

RICHARD: Thanks for the warning. I'll trade in my Cadillac for a Yugo tomorrow.

THE INTERCOM BUZZER RINGS. JULIE ANSWERS.
JULIE: Yes...

EVE: Mrs. Horton, Mrs. Horton and Mrs... Deveraux to see you.

JULIE: Thank you Eve, send them right in.

EVE OPENS THE DOOR AND ALICE, MAGGIE AND JENNIFER WALK IN. EVE ROLLS HER EYES AT THE GROUP AS SHE CLOSES THE DOOR.
JULIE: I'm so glad you could all come.
ALICE, MAGGIE AND JENNIFER SPEAK NEARLY IN UNISON.
ALICE: How could we turn down such a mysterious invitation?

MAGGIE: We admit, we're dying to know what you're up to...

JENNIFER: Jack's been torturing us with the secrecy...

JULIE: (LAUGHING) Ladies, please, all will be revealed in a minute. First, allow me to introduce our Associate Editor, Mr. Richard Hunt.

THERE IS AN EXCHANGE OF HANDSHAKES AND GENERAL PLEASANTRIES.
JULIE: (CONT'D) Now if you'll all have a seat, we'll get down to business.
JENNIFER, MAGGIE AND ALICE SIT ON ONE OF THE SOFAS IN JULIE'S OFFICE.
JULIE: (CONT'D) As you know, Midsummer is going to be a magazine dedicated to the mature woman... And we're working on our premier issue right now.

RICHARD: We plan to have regular features on art, current literature, politics, the environment...

JULIE: And we also intend to have a special cover story for each issue.

RICHARD: We've been discussing what would make our premier cover exceptional...

JULIE: And we think we've found the answer...

RICHARD: We'd like to do a story on four generations of women...

JULIE: All women from the same extraordinary family...

ALICE: You don't mean...

JULIE: Darling, that's exactly what I mean. We want to do our cover story on the women of the Horton family.

MAGGIE: Julie, how exciting... But are you sure you want all of us?

JULIE: Of course, we're sure. We want you, Grandma, Jennifer and even little Abby.

JENNIFER: Julie, I love it! You could interview Grandma about raising 6 kids, about volunteering at the hospital... You could talk to Maggie about the new Day Care Center... And...

JULIE: (LAUGHS) Richard, as I'm sure you know, besides being married to a journalist, Jennifer is one herself...

JENNIFER: Used to be...

JULIE: Still is. So you should get lots of good quotes from her.

ALICE: You won't be interviewing us, Julie?

RICHARD: Since we decided to include Julie on the cover, I'm the one who'll be doing the interviews and writing the story. I hope you ladies don't object.

MAGGIE: I don't see how we could when the gentleman in question is as handsome and charming as you.

RICHARD: That, my dear Mrs. Horton, was the correct answer.

THEY ALL LAUGH, WHEN EVE STICKS HER HEAD IN THE DOOR.
EVE: Hurumph... It sounds more fun in here, than out there.
EVERYONE QUICKLY TRIES TO STIFLE THEIR LAUGHTER.
JULIE: Eve, dear, what can I do for you.

EVE: I just wanted to tell you I'm leaving to run an errand. I'll be back in about an hour.

JULIE: That's fine, Eve.

EVE CLOSES THE DOOR.
RICHARD: (INNOCENT) Is it me, or does that young lady seem like a handful of trouble?
THE LADIES LAUGH. HOLD ON RICHARD, SLIGHTLY PERPLEXED.

CUT TO: JANET'S OFFICE. JANET, MORGAN AND AGENT KURTWOOD ARE SITTING AT JANET'S DESK, GOING THROUGH STACKS OF FILES.

MORGAN: This is amazing reading...

JANET: It certainly is. Agent Kurtwood, I can't thank you enough for Interpol's assistance.

KURTWOOD: Our pleasure. We've been tracking Katerina for a long time.

MORGAN: Did you see this? (HOLDING UP A FOLDER) She had over 10 aliases.

JANET: (POINTING AT ANOTHER FOLDER) How about this? Some of those aliases have a criminal record...

KURTWOOD: Extortion, embezzlement...

JANET: And what about her so-called "friends?"

KURTWOOD: The list of her criminal associates fills an entire file.

MORGAN: I just don't get it. How could she have fooled everyone here in Salem?

JANET: Oh Morgan, I don't think the question is "how," I think the question is "why."

MORGAN: "Why?"

JANET: It seems Carly... Katerina... whoever, went to a lot of trouble to deceive a lot of people. I want to know why. What was she after?

OUT ON JANET'S QUESTION.

ACT III

ALAMAIN LIVING ROOM. VIVIAN, LAWRENCE. IN PROGRESS.
LAWRENCE: Perhaps you didn't hear me the first time, Vivian. Nicholas is my son. He loves me.

VIVIAN: Oh I heard you, Lawrence. I'd even venture to say that Nikki worships you. But tell me. Have you thought about how it will affect him when he finds out that his adored father murdered his mother?

LAWRENCE: That won't happen Vivian.

VIVIAN: How can you be so sure?

LAWRENCE: It's simple. I didn't kill Katerina.

VIVIAN: Well, you'll forgive me if I doubt you just this once. You have done some horrible things in the past.

LAWRENCE: Only what anyone in my position would do.

VIVIAN: Possibly. But your transgressions are a matter of public record. What if Nikki were to find out about them?

LAWRENCE: There's no reason for Nicholas to find out about any of that. And even if he did, he wouldn't believe it. I am, as you so rightly pointed out, his adored father.

VIVIAN: Don't be arrogant, Lawrence. You know as well as I do that Nikki is not your average child. He's very intelligent and not easily fooled.

LAWRENCE: As I said, he is my son.

VIVIAN: You've been lucky so far. But you can't hide the truth from Nicholas forever. And God help him when he does find out.

LAWRENCE: Since Nicholas will never know about my past, we needn't worry about divine intervention, need we, darling Aunt?

VIVIAN: Needs may be, Lawrence. Because if you hurt my child in any way, I will repay... and even the Divine won't save you.

HOLD ON VIVIAN'S THREAT.

CUT TO: JOHN'S HOTEL ROOM, GENEVA. JOHN IS SITTING ON HIS BED, LOOKING AT THE PAPERS SPREAD ALL OVER HIS BED.

JOHN: Carly Manning, there's a lot more to you than any of us thought. (BEAT) I just hope that uncovering the secrets in your past will help unlock the mysteries in mine.
THERE IS A KNOCK AT THE DOOR, WHICH STARTLES JOHN. HE GETS UP AND GOES TO THE DOOR.
JOHN: Shane?

SHANE: Yes, John, it's me.

JOHN OPENS THE DOOR, ALLOWING SHANE TO ENTER.
JOHN: Thanks for coming, man.

SHANE: Not at all. It's my pleasure. I'm just sorry I was called away so suddenly.

JOHN: No problem, I understand.

SHANE AND JOHN PROCEED TO A SMALL TABLE AND SIT DOWN.
SHANE: (NODDING TOWARDS THE PAPERS ON THE BED) I see you haven't let my delays hinder you.

JOHN: Well, this thing is pretty hard to get out of my mind. (BEAT) So, what have you got?

SHANE: (OPENING A BRIEFCASE AND PRODUCING A FILE FOLDER) I called in a couple of favors and was able to dig up some more records of Carly's past activities.

JOHN: (OPENING THE FOLDER AND EXAMINING THE CONTENTS) She certainly got around. Who are all of the men in these photographs?

SHANE: Some of the most prominent and powerful crime figures in Europe.

JOHN: (SURPRISED) Are you serious?

SHANE: Absolutely. They were all under I.S.A. surveillance. In fact, we're still watching the ones that aren't dead. (BEAT) These are dangerous characters.

JOHN: (SEPARATING TWO PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE REST) Wait just a minute here...

SHANE: What is it?

JOHN: I recognize these faces... (HE HANDS THE PHOTOGRAPHS TO SHANE)

SHANE: (LOOKING AT THE PHOTOGRAPHS) Ah, yes. Pieter Vanderhass, who made his fortune in money laundering right here in Geneva. (BEAT) And Francisco Dios, born in Spain and found his calling as a smuggler in...

JOHN: (INTERRUPTING) Paris.

SHANE: That's right. (BEAT, AS HE HANDS THE PHOTOGRAPHS BACK TO JOHN) Do these photos trigger anything?

JOHN: (GIVING THE PHOTOGRAPHS A SECOND LOOK) No, not really. I just recognize the faces. And when you mentioned the names, they just clicked, like I knew them before.

SHANE: Well, this is encouraging. It would seem that we're on the right track.

JOHN: Yeah, it looks that way. (HE LOOKS THROUGH THE OTHER CONTENTS OF THE FOLDER) And Carly knew all of these criminals?

SHANE: Judging from the surveillance records, I'd say she knew them very well.

JOHN: But why? Why would a young woman from a wealthy and prestigious family want to associate with scum like this?

SHANE: Unfortunately, the surveillance records can't tell us that. They can only tell us where she was and with whom. We can't even be sure of everything she did, much less why she did it.

JOHN: It just doesn't make any sense...

SHANE: Maybe she was a spoiled rich girl who was looking for a little excitement, or maybe she was associating with men like this to spite her parents.

JOHN: But that just doesn't sound like the Carly Manning we all knew.

SHANE: But it does sound like the Katerina Von Leuschner who went from private school to private school all across Europe, changing her name at whim.

JOHN: You're right about that. (BEAT) It's beginning to look like we didn't really know Carly at all.

SHANE: No, we didn't. But I don't think there was much to know.

JOHN: What do you mean?

SHANE: I mean that "Doctor Carly Manning" didn't really exist. She was nothing more than an elaborate ruse.

HOLD ON SHANE.

CUT TO: BO'S BOAT/INT. BO IS IN SHAWN-DOUGLAS' CABIN, LOOKING BLEAKLY AT HIS SLEEPING SON. BO HEARS THE BELL CHIME GENTLY, RISES, ADJUSTS SHAWN-DOUGLAS' COVERS, AND CLOSES THE DOOR TO A CRACK AS HE GOES TO SEE WHO'S VISITING. KAYLA HAS JUST COME IN.

KAYLA: Bo... Hi... how's Shawn-Douglas?
BO GOES WORDLESSLY TO KAYLA AND HUGS HER. SHE HOLDS HIM FOR A MOMENT, ROCKING HIM AS IF HE WERE A BABY. BO PULLS BACKS FROM HER EMBRACE. HE LOOKS AS IF HE'S BEEN CRYING.
KAYLA: (CONT'D) Bo, he's ok, isn't he?

BO: Physically. He had a few stitches, but his hand should heal... no major damage. Emotionally, however...

KAYLA: Bo, tell me...

BO: Shawn-Douglas is falling apart before my eyes... If it isn't anger and rage, it's hysterics and night terrors... I just don't know what to do... (BEAT) And the hardest part is... it's all my fault...

KAYLA: You know that isn't true...

BO: But it is. I haven't been much of a father. I leave Shawn-D at Ma and Pop's... I send him to camp... And what he really needs is to be with me...

KAYLA: You did what you had to do, Bo...

BO: (IGNORING KAYLA) And there were signs... things I should have seen. But I was too busy... romancing Carly, playing super-cop...

KAYLA: Bo, beating yourself up over the past is futile. What's done is done. All you can do now is make things better for the future...

BO: But can I do better, make it better?

KAYLA: Of course you can. You know how to be a wonderful father... (BEAT) You've had a hard time, Bo, and we can't pretend otherwise. But what matters is what you learn from the past...

BO: Learn from the past... and maybe take some advice?

KAYLA: Advice?

BO: Doctor Ryan, the one who stitched up Shawn-D's hand, suggested I take the little sailor to see a therapist...

KAYLA: Doug advised the same thing... and I think they're both right...

BO: But don't you think I should be able to handle my own son?

KAYLA: Now that sounds like Pop talking. I love Pop dearly, you know I do... but you can't always handle things yourself, sometimes it takes a professional, who can step back objectively and see what's really going on...

BO: And you think that would help Shawn-D?

KAYLA TAKES BO'S HAND.
KAYLA: It wouldn't hurt. There's nothing wrong with admitting you need help... because I know you want to do whatever it takes to get Shawn-Douglas back to being his old self.

BO: Yes... whatever it takes to help my son...

OUT ON BO AND KAYLA, HANDS CLASPED, LOOKING TOWARDS SHAWN-D'S DOOR.

ACT IV

JACK'S OFFICE/SPECTATOR. IT IS DARK INSIDE JACK'S OFFICE, WHEN THE DOOR OPENS. WITHOUT TURNING ON THE LIGHTS, A FIGURE ENTERS THE OFFICE AND CLOSES THE DOOR. THE FIGURE WALKS TO JACK'S DESK AND BEGINS OPENING AND CLOSING DRAWERS, LOOKING FOR SOMETHING. WE SEE THE SEARCHER'S HANDS. THEY ARE SMALL AND NICELY MANICURED WITH RED POLISH. FINALLY, WE SEE THAT THE SEARCHER IS EVE.
EVE: (WHISPERING) Come on Jack. Where are they?
EVE OPENS ANOTHER DRAWER AND SEES SOME KEYS. SHE PICKS THEM UP.
EVE: (CONT'D) (WHISPERING) Aha!
EVE PUTS THE KEYS INTO HER POCKET, CLOSES THE DRAWER, AND WALKS OUT OF JACK'S OFFICE. AS SHE IS HEADING OUT, SHE BUMPS INTO VERN, WHO WAS ABOUT TO WALK IN THE OFFICE.
EVE: (CONT'D) Hey! Watch where you're going!

VERN: Eve? What are you doing in Jack's office?

EVE PLACES HER HAND ON HER POCKET, UNNOTICED BY VERN.
EVE: (NONCHALANTLY) Oh. I came by to pay a cordial visit to my dear ex-husband. But, he wasn't here. Guess I'll check back later.

VERN: (UNCONVINCED) Right.

EVE QUICKLY STALKS OFF. JUST AS SHE DISAPPEARS, JACK COMES WALKING AROUND THE CORNER. VERN IS STILL STARING IN THE DIRECTION OF EVE'S DEPARTURE. JACK WALKS UP TO VERN AND WAVES A HAND IN FRONT OF HIS FACE.
JACK: Vern! Why are you standing there staring? Have you seen a ghost?

VERN: (SNAPPING OUT OF IT) Jack! I just saw Eve.

JACK: Worse than a ghost. You were momentarily turned to stone by the Medusa.

VERN: I caught her coming out of your office.

JACK: What?!?

JACK RUNS INTO HIS OFFICE, FOLLOWED BY VERN. JACK TURNS ON THE LIGHTS AND CAUTIOUSLY LOOKS AROUND. HE UNLOCKS HIS FILING CABINET AND LOOKS THROUGH THE FILES.
JACK: (CONT'D) Well, all our important files are still here. (LOOKS AROUND THE OFFICE AGAIN) And, it appears all the silverware, so to speak, is accounted for.

VERN: I wonder what she was up to?

JACK: I don't' know, but I'm afraid we'll find out.

HOLD ON JACK'S CONCERN.

CUT TO: ALAMAIN LIVING ROOM. AS LAWRENCE STARES AT HER, VIVIAN BEGINS TOYING WITH A DELICATE FAN THAT RESTS ON THE SOFA NEXT TO HER.

LAWRENCE: Overly warm, Vivian? Or just a trifle nervous? Empty threats can do that...
LAWRENCE CONTINUES TO STARE MENACINGLY AT VIVIAN.
VIVIAN: It is a bit... stifling in here, wouldn't you say?

LAWRENCE: I'd say... that if you don't wish to find out what true heat is, you and Ivan should be extremely careful regaling Nicholas with tales of family history.

VIVIAN: Meaning?

LAWRENCE: Meaning, of course, that I would hate to see Nikki confused, from hearing lies concerning his beloved father...

VIVIAN: I have no intention of lying to Nikki, I have no need to do so...

LAWRENCE: I would strongly suggest that various... details of my history be expurgated for Nikki's consumption. And I would certainly be careful of who the boy speaks to... or what he hears... (SMOOTHLY) I'd hate to see anything happen to upset him further...

VIVIAN: (STILL TOYING WITH THE FAN) Why nephew dear, are you threatening me?

LAWRENCE: Ahhh, Vivian (HE TAKES THE FAN FROM HER HAND, AND DELICATELY TRACES THE EDGE DOWN THE CURVE OF HER CHEEK) You know I would never threaten you... (HE SPREADS THE FAN OUT AND BEGINS BREAKING THE SECTIONS ONE BY ONE AS COUNTERPOINT TO HIS WORDS) But you must (CRACK) admit (CRACK) that Ivan has had (CRACK) a less than sterling (CRACK) history... (CRACK) It would be a shame (CRACK) to have anything (CRACK) happen to him...

LAWRENCE HANDS THE NOW LIMP AND RUINED FAN TO VIVIAN, WHO TAKES IT IN A SHAKY HAND.
LAWRENCE: Such a delicate thing... what a pity...
LAWRENCE TURNS AND WALKS OUT OF THE ROOM. VIVIAN HOLDS THE FAN IN HER SHAKING HAND, LOOKS AT IT AND FLINGS IT ACROSS THE ROOM. IVAN WALKS IN.
VIVIAN: Did you hear that?? Did you???

IVAN: Every syllable, Madame.

VIVIAN: And your opinion?

IVAN: We are in great danger, Madame. Mr. Alamain appears to have resumed his, shall we say, former motivational style? This bodes ill for us, I fear... and for young Master Nicholas, as well...

VIVIAN: I'm afraid you're right, Ivan. Quite afraid...

HOLD ON THEIR EXCHANGED LOOK OF DEEP CONCERN.

CUT TO: JOHN'S HOTEL ROOM, GENEVA. IN PROGRESS.

JOHN: It just keeps getting better, doesn't it?

SHANE: It's an incredible story. I don't think I'd believe it myself, if the proof wasn't staring me right in the face. (NODDING TOWARD THE I.S.A. FILE)

JOHN: I think we're making progress.

SHANE: I think you're right. First, you have a memory of Carly...

JOHN: And then I recognize some of the mobsters she socialized with...

SHANE: It certainly seems that she has strong ties to your past.

JOHN: Yeah... (SIGHS) And if we can figure out those ties, maybe it'll open some doors for me, and I'll remember who I was.

SHANE: We'll do our best.

JOHN: So, what's the status on Danielle?

SHANE: Things are going slowly, I'm afraid. The notorious thief Romulus is quite a prize. The Brussels police are reluctant to sign her over to us, even for 48 hours.

JOHN: Great. She's a famous thief, so we can't get to her.

SHANE: Infamous is more like it. (BEAT) Don't worry, it may take a little more time, but we'll get to her.

JOHN: Good. She's one of the few people from my past who's still alive...

SHANE: True. But there are other people to whom we can talk...

JOHN: Jack and Jennifer.

SHANE: Have you been able to reach them?

JOHN: No, not yet. I tried a few times, but they haven't been home.

SHANE: Well, you'll reach them eventually.

JOHN: I'm still a little uneasy about this...

SHANE: About what?

JOHN: Talking to Jennifer.

SHANE: What's wrong?

JOHN: It's just... I know that Jennifer and Carly were best friends...

SHANE: Exactly. That's why you have to talk to her. If anyone knows about Carly, it's Jennifer.

JOHN: Yeah, but it could really hurt her. I mean, finding these things out about Carly was a shock to me, and I didn't even know her that well...

JOHN PAUSES, SMILING SLIGHTLY, AS HE REALIZES THE IRONY OF HIS STATEMENT.
JOHN: (CONT'D) At least, John Black didn't know her very well. Anyway, if all this is shocking to you and me, just think of how devastating it could be for Jennifer.

SHANE: It sounds like you've got a decision to make, old man.

JOHN: The decision's been made, Cap'n. (BEAT) I just need to handle the situation with care. Jennifer is a good person, and I don't want to hurt her.

SHANE: But you do need to talk to her about her school days with Carly.

JOHN: Yeah. I hope I can do it without upsetting her too much.

SHANE: I think you can handle it. Just make sure that you ask the questions. Jennifer doesn't need to know what we've found out about Carly. At least, not now.

JOHN: No need to know... I guess some things never change in the spy game...

JOHN GETS UP AND WALKS OVER TO HIS NIGHTSTAND. HE SITS DOWN ON THE BED AND PICKS UP THE PHONE RECEIVER .
JOHN: (CONT'D) Here goes nothin'...
JOHN DIALS A NUMBER AND LISTENS. AFTER SEVERAL SECONDS, HE HANGS UP.
JOHN: (CONT'D) Nobody home.
JOHN GETS UP AND RETURNS TO THE TABLE.
SHANE: Don't worry, John. You'll get an answer in time. (BEAT) You'll get all the answers in time.

JOHN: That may be, but I want them now. I want to put all of this behind me. (BEAT) I've spent too much time away from Brady already...

SHANE: I understand. I know what it's like when your kids are an ocean away.

JOHN: He's the reason I'm doing this, you know. I'm carrying around a lot of excess baggage. I need to get rid of it, so I can concentrate on raising my kid without worrying about my past. He deserves that.

SHANE: And he'll get it. We'll solve this mystery, and then you can get on with being a father.

JOHN: I hope you're right, Shane. (BEAT) I hope you're right.

OUT ON JOHN'S CONCERN.

ACT V

BO'S BOAT/INT. BO AND KAYLA, IN PROGRESS.
BO: (RELUCTANTLY) Maybe you're right, Kay. Maybe Shawn-D does need professional help.

KAYLA: I know you don't like to admit it...

BO: I hate to admit it. I hate to admit that my boy's a nervous wreck, and there isn't a damn thing I can do to help him.

KAYLA: Maybe not directly, but you can help him. You can get him to see a therapist, and work through his pain and his anger.

BO: I know. But I feel so helpless...

KAYLA: You need to be his father. He needs that now, and no one else can do it. (BEAT) I know the pain you're going through...

BO: But I've got to be strong, for Shawn-D.

KAYLA: Don't let your own feelings eat you up inside. If you need to talk to someone, I'm here for you.

BO: Thanks, sis. If anyone can understand what I'm feeling, it's you. But right now, I need to take care of my son. (BEAT) I'll call that therapist and make an appointment.

KAYLA: Good. (SHE TRIES TO SMILE, BUT SHE IS OBVIOUSLY DEPRESSED)

BO: Kayla, are you okay?

KAYLA: Sure, I'm fine.

BO: That listening thing goes both ways, you know. You can talk to me.

KAYLA: No, my problems are trivial compared to what you're dealing with...

BO: Hey. I could use a break from my problems. Maybe I can help.

KAYLA: I don't know...

BO: Come on, humor me a little.

KAYLA: Okay. (BEAT) I'm not even sure it's really a problem. I'm just confused.

BO: About what?

KAYLA: Well, the other night I realized that I'm starting to really care about someone.

BO: (SMILING) Kay, that's great!

KAYLA: I'm not so sure...

BO: What's the problem?

KAYLA: What if he doesn't feel the same way?

BO: Come on, sis. Any guy with half a brain would realize what a great lady you are.

KAYLA: (SMILING) Stop, you're embarrassing me...

BO: I'm serious.

KAYLA: I know I shouldn't, but I'm feeling guilty...

BO: Guilty? Why?

KAYLA: It feels like I'm betraying Steve somehow.

BO: Listen, Kay. You shouldn't feel that way. Steve would want you to go on with your life and be happy. If you've found someone that makes you happy, Steve would want you to be with him.

KAYLA: You think so?

BO: I know so. I went through the same thing after Hope died. I was determined not to get close to anyone again. Part of it was because I didn't want to get close to someone and then lose her, like I lost Hope...

BO CLOSES HIS EYES AND SIGHS.
KAYLA: I'm sorry, Bo. I didn't mean to dredge up painful memories.

BO: (OPENING HIS EYES) No, no, it's okay. I wanted to make a point. (BEAT) Another reason I shut everyone out after Hope died was because I felt that I would be betraying her if I let myself feel anything for another woman.

KAYLA: Then you met Carly. What changed your mind?

BO: (SMILING) Carly's persistence had a lot to do with it. (BEAT) But there was another reason. I finally realized that Hope loved me enough to want me to be happy, even if it was with someone else. She wouldn't want me to be alone, dwelling in the past.

KAYLA: And you think Steve would want the same for me?

BO: You know he would.

KAYLA: Yeah, I know. But I haven't dated anyone since Shane, and that whole situation hurt everyone so badly.

BO: That's in the past, Kay. You've got to let it go.

KAYLA: I have, for the most part. I'm still unsure, though. I don't want to risk losing a wonderful friendship by becoming romantically involved.

BO: Maybe it's not a risk. I guess it depends on the other person, and how good your friendship is. (BEAT) Okay, you've kept me in suspense long enough. Who's the lucky guy? Do I know him?

KAYLA: Yes.

BO: (ANXIOUSLY) Well?

KAYLA: It's Marcus.

HOLD ON BO'S SURPRISE AND KAYLA'S NERVOUS SMILE.

CUT TO: JANET'S OFFICE. JANET AND MORGAN ARE LOOKING THROUGH CARLY'S FILES.

JANET: This is all so confusing. Why was Carly here in Salem? What was she after?

MORGAN: Well, there's always the possibility that she was running a scam on Bo.

JANET: Brady? Why would she do that? (BEAT) Unless, of course it was revenge, or a personal vendetta. It's not as if he were a rich man...

MORGAN: Correction. Bo Brady could potentially be one of the richest men in Salem. (BEAT) Depending, of course, on what happens when his father dies.

JANET: What? Now you've REALLY got me confused. I thought Brady's folks owned a Pub. Does that bring in that much money?

MORGAN: Nonono... I guess you don't know all of Brady's family history. He's the illegitimate son of Victor Kiriakis.

JANET: What?!

MORGAN: Yup. Something about Caroline Brady having a brief affair with Kiriakis. (BEAT) You know, come to think of it, Kiriakis was once married to Carly, himself.

JANET THROWS THE FILE SHE WAS READING ON THE TABLE AND BURIES HER FACE IN HER HANDS.
JANET: This is one weird town.

MORGAN: On occasion...

JANET LIFTS HER HEAD AND GLARES AT MORGAN, THEN JOTS A NOTE ON HER PAD.
JANET: I think it's about time I had a little chat with Mr. Victor Kiriakis.
HOLD ON JANET.

CUT TO: SM. NURSES' STATION/LOUNGE. MARCUS IS AT THE TABLE, READING A MEDICAL JOURNAL. JONAH WALKS IN.

JONAH: Hey, Marcus.

MARCUS: (LOOKING UP FROM HIS READING) Jonah, how's it goin'?

JONAH: (SITTING DOWN AT THE TABLE) Not too badly. I wanted to ask you about Carrie's surgery.

MARCUS: What do you want to know?

JONAH: Well, how did it go?

MARCUS: Everything went fine during the procedure. There were no complications. Now it's just a waiting game to see if the graft will take.

JONAH: What's the prognosis?

MARCUS: The initial signs are very good.

JONAH: I'm glad. I hope everything goes well. (BEAT) Carrie's been through so much. She really deserves to have something good happen to her.

MARCUS: With friends like you, I have no doubt that she'll come through this fine.

JONAH: It helps to have friends like you, too. You know, after seeing everything that's happened with Carrie, I'm thinking about specializing in plastic surgery.

MARCUS: I'm sure you'd make a fine plastic surgeon... But I should warn you...

JONAH: Warn me? About what?

MARCUS: In the field of plastic surgery, cases like Carrie's are the exception, not the rule.

JONAH: So what's "the rule"?

MARCUS: Most cases are rich people who pay you big bucks to make them look younger and thinner...

JONAH: But there are people who really need your help, right?

MARCUS: Oh, of course. When I'm able to help someone like Carrie, and make her life better... there's just no feeling like it. Those are the times that remind me why I became a plastic surgeon.

JONAH: Sounds like you're really happy with what you do.

MARCUS: I am.

A NURSE OPENS THE DOOR, AND WALKS IN, CARRYING AN ENVELOPE.
NURSE: Doctor Hunter?

MARCUS: Yes?

NURSE: This was just delivered for you. (SHE HANDS HIM THE ENVELOPE)

MARCUS: Thank you.

THE NURSE WALKS OUT. MARCUS OPENS THE ENVELOPE, CONCERNED.
JONAH: What's up, man?

MARCUS: I don't know. This looks like a subpoena.

JONAH: A subpoena? What for?

MARCUS: Let's see...

MARCUS UNFOLDS THE SUBPOENA, AND A SMALL CARD DROPS OUT OF IT. MARCUS PICKS UP THE CARD AND READS IT. HE SMILES AND CHUCKLES SOFTLY.
MARCUS: (CONT'D) Unbelievable...

JONAH: Well, I guess it's not very serious.

MARCUS: I'm not in trouble with the law...

JONAH: So, what is it?

MARCUS: It's a thank-you note from someone I went out with.

JONAH: Who would send you a note wrapped in a subpoena?

MARCUS: (SMILING) A certain police captain.

JONAH: The new lady police captain?

MARCUS: Yeah, Janet Yamada.

JONAH: You dog, you! I saw her once. The girl's got it goin' on!

MARCUS: Hey, come on. Yes, she's a fine-looking lady. She's also very smart and funny. She's great company.

JONAH: (GRINNING) I'll bet.

MARCUS: It was one date, to get to know each other better.

JONAH: And just how well do you know her now, Doctor?

MARCUS: She's a friend. We had dinner and listened to some jazz.

JONAH: (STILL GRINNING) Uh-huh...

MARCUS: I had a good time with Janet... (BEAT) But there's someone else I really wanted to be with that night...

OUT ON MARCUS, DEEP IN THOUGHT.

ACT VI

ALAMAIN LIVING ROOM. VIVIAN IS SITTING ON THE SOFA, IVAN STANDING BEHIND HER. SHE IS SITTING UP VERY STRAIGHT, AND STARING STRAIGHT AHEAD, LOOKING EXTREMELY SERIOUS. THE ROOM IS QUIET.
VIVIAN: (SOFTLY) Ivan.

IVAN: Yes, Madame.

VIVIAN: I'm beginning to have the feeling I may have underestimated Lawrence.

IVAN: I agree, Madame. He may be capable of more than we had ever imagined.

VIVIAN: Much more.

IVAN: We may have made a tactical error in thinking he could be trusted.

VIVIAN: Or controlled.

IVAN: Agreed.

VIVIAN: I hadn't realized how truly deep is his evil...

IVAN: Mr. Alamain hides it well.

VIVIAN: He can seem so... proper, polite... almost conventional... But he's like a vortex that swallows everything around it. He is cold and dark... (BEAT) He frightens me.

IVAN: It is good you are frightened. It means you realize the danger you are in. You and Nicholas.

VIVIAN: I'm not worried for myself. It's Nikki. What will happen when he sees the creature his father truly is? It could destroy him.

IVAN: Oui, madam.

VIVIAN: I wish I could just take Nikki away from this place.

IVAN: Perhaps the two of you could leave the country?

VIVIAN: I don't believe that will be possible.

IVAN: Why not?

VIVIAN: Those police officers watch our every move.

IVAN: I can take care of them for you, Madame.

VIVIAN: (REACHING BEHIND HER TO TAKE HIS HAND) Thank you Ivan. I'd rather not do that unless it is absolutely necessary.

IVAN: As you wish.

VIVIAN: And there's Nikki himself.

IVAN: How so?

VIVIAN: Nikki loves Lawrence. How can I take him away from his father with no explanation? He would hate me. And it would break his heart to hear the truth.

IVAN: It appears, madame, that Mr. Alamain has spun his web well.

VIVIAN: Yes. And we are three little flies trapped here, waiting... (BEAT). I'm afraid, Ivan. God help me, for the first time in years, I'm afraid.

VIVIAN CLASPS HER HANDS IN FRONT OF HER AND BOWS HER HEAD AS IF IN PRAYER. IVAN RESTS HIS HANDS ON HER SHOULDERS AND STARES STRAIGHT AHEAD. HOLD ON THE TABLEAU.

CUT TO: BO'S BOAT. BO, KAYLA. IN PROGRESS.

BO: (SURPRISED) Marcus? Whoa!

KAYLA: Why are you so surprised?

BO: (SCRATCHING HIS HEAD) I guess I just never thought about the two of you... you know, in a romantic relationship.

KAYLA: I know. Neither did I, not really.

BO: So, what changed?

KAYLA: I'm not sure. Maybe it started when Marcus told me about a date he had with someone else. I felt... jealous.

BO: Is that all?

KAYLA: No, that's not all. I am starting to feel something for Marcus that I haven't felt for anyone in a long time. (BEAT) I just don't know what to do about it.

KAYLA STANDS UP AND STARTS TO PACE BACK AND FORTH.
BO: What do you want to do?

KAYLA: That's the point, I don't know. Should I tell him how I feel? Should I ask him out? Or, should I just wait until I know what he's feeling?

KAYLA SITS DOWN NEXT TO BO.
KAYLA: (CONT'D) I've been out of circulation so long, I'm afraid I'm lost when it comes to these things.

BO: (SMILING SLIGHTLY) I'm sorry, sis, but I really don't know what to tell you.

KAYLA: Tell me anything!

BO: Kay, when it comes to romance, I may not be the best person to ask. I don't think I've had a real date in years. I mean, I first kissed Carly when we where buried alive by Lawrence.

KAYLA: I know... I was there...

BO: But, I do sympathize. (BEAT) I know how it feels to be scared... and lonely.

KAYLA LOOKS AT BO, AND PUTS HER HAND OVER HIS.
KAYLA: I'm sorry, Bo.

BO: Don't be. I'm just worried because I don't seem to have any answers... for anyone...

KAYLA: Come here, you.

KAYLA LEANS OVER AND HUGS BO.
KAYLA: (CONT'D) Everything will be all right. I'll figure out what to do about Marcus. You will get on with your life. And we will help Shawn-D...

BO: Promise.

KAYLA: Sister's honor.

HOLD ON THEIR HUG.

CUT TO: JACK'S OFFICE. WE SEE A SHADOW THROUGH THE GLASS IN JACK'S DOOR. THE DOOR KNOB ROTATES AND THE DOOR SLOWLY OPENS. EVE TIPTOES IN.

EVE: (WHISPERS TO SELF) Great, the coast is clear...
EVE GENTLY REMOVES JACK'S KEYS FROM HER POCKET AND SWIFTLY SNEAKS TO HIS DESK. EVE OPENS THE DRAWER AND GENTLY PLACES THE KEYS INSIDE. SHE TAKES A DEEP BREATH AND SUDDENLY GRABS THE KEYS, WIPING THEM FIERCELY ON THE HEM OF HER SKIRT TO REMOVE ANY FINGERPRINTS.
EVE: (CONT'D) Can't be too careful when Jack the Jerk Deveraux is involved...
JACK'S PHONE RINGS AND EVE JUMPS.
EVE: (CONT'D) Get a hold of yourself, silly... And get out of here!
EVE DROPS THE KEYS BACK IN THE DRAWER, CAREFUL TO TOUCH THEM ONLY WITH HER SKIRT HEM. EVE QUIETLY WALKS TO THE DOOR, CHECKS HER ESCAPE ROUTE, AND SWIFTLY LEAVES. THE OFFICE IS QUIET FOR A MOMENT, THEN WE HEAR FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING, AND LAUGHTER. JACK OPENS THE DOOR AND WITH A SWEEP OF HIS ARM, BECKONS JENNIFER, MAGGIE AND JULIE TO ENTER. IN PROGRESS.
JULIE: So you see, Midsummer will be of interest to all women, regardless of age...

JENNIFER: After all, younger women will eventually be older ones, if all goes well...

MAGGIE: This is so exciting! And a cover shot of Horton women... that's going to be wonderful!

JULIE: I hope so... (TO JACK AND JENNIFER) Now, if you will excuse us, I promised Maggie the grand tour of my office.

JACK: Ladies, it has been my pleasure.

JULIE: Jack, ever gallant...

JENNIFER: (LAUGHING) Julie, be forewarned, he usually does that when he wants something.

JULIE: Jennifer, darling, I know... After all, I'm a Horton and Hortons seem to be the only people who can handle Jack Deveraux...

JACK: Hey, I feel like you're talking about a trained seal. (HUFFING) Boy... try to be nice...

JENNIFER: Jack, don't pout. Check your messages and let's go home.

JULIE: Yes, say good-bye, Jack.

JACK: Good-bye, Jack.

JULIE WALKS OVER, GIVES JACK A HUGE KISS, MUCH TO HIS ASTONISHMENT, AND WALKS OUT.
MAGGIE: (LAUGHING) She does know how to make an exit... Good-bye, Jack, Jenn... See you later... And thanks.

JENNIFER: Bye, Aunt Maggie.

MAGGIE WALKS OUT OF THE OFFICE, LEAVING THE DOOR AJAR.
JENNIFER: Come on, Jack, get a move on.
JENNIFER PICKS UP A COPY OF THE SPECTATOR, PLOPS IN A CHAIR ACROSS FROM JACK'S AND BEGINS TO READ. JACK SITS AT HIS DESK AND STARTS TO GO THROUGH HIS MESSAGES, WHEN HE SPIES JO THROUGH THE OPEN DOOR. JO SEEMS TO BE SEARCHING FOR SOMEONE.
JACK: Hmmm... looks like there's mischief afoot...

JENNIFER: What?

JACK: (LOUDLY) Oh, Jo... Come to see your son? You won't find him out there.

JO: Son... I didn't see you in there... I was looking for Vern... Ummm... I thought he might know where you were...

WITH IMPECCABLE TIMING, VERN WALKS UP.
VERN: Of course you were, Jo, and if you'd found me, I would have told you... ummm... Jack's in his office...

JO: Then, I would have thanked Vern, and come in to find you...

JACK: Is the show over?

VERN: I'd say we'd run our lines.

JACK: Jo, would you like to join us in my office? And Vern?

VERN: (TO JACK) I know... I'm exiting stage right... (TO JO) Good-bye, Jo... nice almost talking to you...

VERN WALKS AWAY. JO WALKS INTO JACK'S OFFICE.
JO: I came by to see how you were doing...

JACK: Of course... And Vern had nothing to do with it...

JENNIFER: (JUMPING IN TO HELP JO) Jo, how wonderful you dropped by to see Jack! Has he told you about the Childcare Center yet? Maggie and I are setting one up, here at Deveraux Publishing!

JO: (THANKFUL FOR THE CHANGE OF TOPIC) What a great idea, Jennifer. It will be a godsend for the working parents here...

JENNIFER: Absolutely. They'll be able to bring their children to work with them...

JO: Have lunch with them...

JENNIFER: Or visit them during the day...

JACK: Whoa, there, partner, rein in that enthusiasm. I have not yet approved this idea, and it most certainly is not a done deal...

OUT ON JENNIFER, AS SHE STARES AT JACK IN SHOCK.

ACT VII

KIRIAKIS LIVING ROOM/FOYER. VICTOR IS SITTING ON THE COUCH, READING. NICO WALKS IN.
NICO: Signore... Captain Yamada is here to see you.

VICTOR: The Police Captain? I wonder what she wants? Nico, by all means, send her in.

NICO WALKS OUT AND RETURNS A MOMENT LATER, FOLLOWED BY JANET. NICO STANDS DISCRETELY TO ONE SIDE.
JANET: Thank you for seeing me without an appointment.

VICTOR: I'm always ready to help the Salem Police Department.

JANET: (LOOKING AT NICO) May we speak in private?

VICTOR: You can speak freely in front of Nico. He's my bodyguard and can be trusted with everything... including my life.

JANET: You need a bodyguard?

VICTOR: Captain, a man of my wealth can have many enemies. (BEAT) But I'm sure you didn't come here to discuss Nico.

JANET: No. I'm here to discuss Carly Manning.

VICTOR: Carly? What can I tell you about Carly that you don't already know? She was my son's fiancée and now she's dead and he's alone.

JANET: I understand you were married to her...

VICTOR: That is a matter of public record. You needn't have come here to ask me that.

JANET: No. But only you can tell me why you got married and why you got divorced.

VICTOR: We were married a short time, it was not a happy marriage. We divorced. End of story.

JANET: Can I be frank, Mr. Kiriakis?

VICTOR: Please. It would speed things up considerably.

JANET: We have found a number of irregularities in Carly's files and I'd like your help in trying to explain them.

VICTOR: Irregularities? Exactly what kind of irregularities?

JANET: I'm not at liberty to discuss them at the moment.

VICTOR: Then how can I possibly help you?

JANET: Tell me everything you know about Carly Manning.

VICTOR: She was a brilliant doctor. She helped me recover when I suffered a stroke. I fell in love with her. She loved my son. Our marriage was a mistake. It ended.

JANET: But what about her past?

VICTOR: Her past? She was young, her life devoted to medicine. What kind of past could she have had?

JANET: You're not going to tell me anything, are you?

VICTOR: Captain, I have nothing to tell.

JANET: Nothing about an apparent murder attempt on Carly's life? Nothing about a mysterious virus that nearly killed Bo Brady?

VICTOR: Horrible accidents...

JANET: This isn't going to get me anywhere, is it?

VICTOR: Apparently not.

JANET: (LOOKS AT VICTOR AND NODS) Thank you for seeing me, Mr. Kiriakis.

VICTOR: You're welcome. Nico will see you out.

JANET TURNS TO LEAVE.
NICO: This way, Captain.
JANET STARTS TO WALK OUT, THEN TURNS TO VICTOR.
JANET: By the way, don't leave Salem, you may be a material witness in a murder investigation.
JANET SMILES, TURNS AND WALKS OUT, FOLLOWED BY NICO. VICTOR STARES AFTER HER. NICO WALKS BACK INTO THE ROOM.
NICO: Do you think she will be a problem, sir?

VICTOR: Damn it, Nico, I think the new Captain could prove to be a formidable opponent.

NICO: Shall I arrange something, sir?

VICTOR: No, not yet. Let's find out how much she really knows about Carly before we decide what to do with the bothersome Captain Yamada.

HOLD ON VICTOR.

CUT TO: JACK'S OFFICE/SPECTATOR. JENNIFER, JACK AND JO. IN PROGRESS.

JENNIFER: Of course you're going to do it, Jack Deveraux! It's a perfect idea!
JULIE WALKS IN, WITH MAGGIE RIGHT BEHIND HER.
JULIE: What's a perfect idea?

JO: The Daycare Center.

JULIE: Of course it is. Who thinks otherwise?

JENNIFER: Jack...

JULIE: Jack wouldn't be that foolish, would you, Jack? I'm sure Jennifer simply misunderstood you.

JACK: Hey, why is everyone arriving on cue today for the sole purpose of ganging up on me?

JULIE: Jack, don't be paranoid. And please answer the question.

JACK: (EXASPERATED) What question?

JULIE: I asked if you would be so foolish as to believe that the Deveraux Daycare Center was not a marvelous idea?

JACK: "Deveraux..."

MAGGIE: Of course, Jack, what else would we call it?

JENNIFER: Yes, Jack... Deveraux Daycare can become a model for company owned and operated daycare centers throughout the state...

JO: Yes, son, you'll be a role model...

JACK: Hmmm... Deveraux Daycare...

JULIE: (SOTTO VOCE) My George, I think he's got it...

JACK: You know... it is a good idea...

JENNIFER: Yes!

JACK: But there is a lot of preparation to do before we make any definite plans.

JO: Like what?

JACK: Daycare facilities must be licensed... and we'll need licensed child-care workers and teachers to run it...

MAGGIE: We can handle that. I'm sure Tom and Mickey could help.

JENNIFER: And my Dad probably knows some good people...

JACK: We'd need to check out the insurance requirements for on-site childcare, and determine if there will be any fees charged to employees... And, we need to find a physical location for it...

JULIE: There seems to be plenty of room in the building, now that you've leased all the floors...

JACK: That's true, but we need to find a large enough space to house the children, toys, kitchen facilities, rest rooms... there's a lot to consider...

JENNIFER: But you are considering it?

JACK: Yes, I am considering it. But we will do this right. And that means a feasibility study, research into requirements and expert recommendations.

JENNIFER: Yes? So... is it a go?

JACK: I'll assign one of the summer interns to begin research tomorrow, that would be a perfect short-term assignment for one of them.

JENNIFER: This means "yes"?

JACK: If we can meet all the requirements... (TRYING NOT TO SMILE) this means "yes".

JENNIFER JUMPS UP AND DELIGHTEDLY HUGS JACK AND GIVES HIM A BIG KISS.
JENNIFER: That was a thank-you kiss from Abby, who'll be happy to come to work with her Daddy...

MAGGIE: And a hug from you, right?

JENNIFER: Of course... I'm so excited about this...

THE PHONE RINGS.
JACK: My secretary should get that...

JO: When we came in, she wasn't at her desk...

THE PHONE CONTINUES TO RING.
JACK: If you ladies will excuse me...
JACK ANSWERS THE PHONE, ONE WAY.
JACK: Hello, Jack Deveraux here... Oh, hello John... Geneva? That's why the connection is a little noisy... Finding out anything of interest? Oh, yes of course, here she is...
JACK PUTS HIS HAND OVER THE RECEIVER.
JACK: (TO JENNIFER) It's John, calling from Geneva. He'd like to speak to you.

JENNIFER: Me? Why?

JACK SHRUGS AS JENNIFER TAKES THE PHONE.
JENNIFER: John, hi! Yes, I'm fine, everyone here is fine... What? About Carly? I'd have to look at some old correspondence to find details... No time for that? Well, ok... I do remember Carly mentioning a summer house near Vienna... Yes, just outside... does that help? Good... Let me know what you discover, ok? You take care, and "hi" to Shane... Bye...
JENNIFER HANGS UP THE PHONE.
JENNIFER: (CONT'D) That was strange... Why does John need to know about Carly to unravel his past?

JACK: John and Carly had a past? (SOTTO VOCE) What a truly frightening notion...

JENNIFER: I just hope that whatever John's doing, he can clear up some of these silly misunderstandings about Carly...

JO: I'm sure he will, dear...

MAGGIE: Yes, we all know Carly was a wonderful person...

JULIE: Well, I don't know about you ladies, but I have a date with a tall, handsome man, so I must be off...

JACK: Hey, wait. Why did you and Maggie come back into my office? It must have been important...

JULIE: Oh... Well, Eve was sitting at her desk looking like the proverbial cat that swallowed the canary.

MAGGIE: Julie asked her what she'd done...

JULIE: And she smiled sweetly and said, "nothing." I thought I should warn you.

JACK: "Nothing?" I'm doomed...

JULIE: Maybe not... It could have something to do with her quest for a husband.

JO: A husband?

JULIE: Don't ask. Enough of Eve. I'm off to meet Doug.

MAGGIE: I'd better go, too, I'll walk you out. Jo?

JO: I have... I have to check on something... I'll be leaving in a few minutes...

JACK: And would this something be named "Vern"?

JENNIFER: Jack... let's go... Don't forget we have to pick up Abby from Grandma's...

JACK: I'd never forget the child, believe me... Jo... Close the door when you're done.

JO: I will... Bye...

JACK AND JENNIFER WALK OUT THE DOOR AND TOWARDS THE ELEVATOR. HOLD ON JO LOOKING AFTER THEM.

CUT TO: SPECTATOR ELEVATOR/UNDERGROUND GARAGE. JACK AND JENNIFER ARE STANDING IN THE ELEVATOR.

JACK: How is it I always find myself alone in elevators with you? (PUTS HIS ARMS AROUND JENNIFER)

JENNIFER: Are you complaining?

JACK: Most assuredly not...

JACK AND JENNIFER KISS, UNTIL THE ELEVATOR JOLTS TO THE BOTTOM IN THE UNDERGROUND GARAGE. JENNIFER DROPS HER PURSE.
JENNIFER: See what you made me do...

JACK: Are you complaining?

JENNIFER: Most assuredly not...

JENNIFER GIVES JACK A LONG KISS.
JACK: I guess you weren't complaining...
JENNIFER STOOPS TO PICK UP HER PURSE AND A FEW THINGS THAT HAVE FALLEN OUT.
JACK: Here let me help...

JENNIFER: No, you go ahead and start the car. I'll only be a second...

JACK EXITS THE ELEVATOR, HEADING TOWARDS HIS CAR. HE'S PARKED BEHIND A PARTITION JUST PAST THE ELEVATOR, SO THE CAR IS HIDDEN FROM HIS VIEW UNTIL HE'S RIGHT NEXT TO IT. JACK TURNS THE CORNER AND SEES HIS CAR. HIS BEAUTIFUL JAGUAR IS NOW HOT PINK, WITH LARGE, GREEN DOTS AND PURPLE TRIM.
JACK: It's... it's... it's...

JENNIFER: (WHO HASN'T TURNED THE CORNER YET) Monty Python's Flying Circus??

JENNIFER TURNS THE CORNER AND SEES JACK'S CAR. SHE DISSOLVES IN A FIT OF LAUGHTER. HOLD ON JACK'S APOPLEXY.

CUT TO: BO'S BOAT/INT. IN PROGRESS, BO IS TELLING SHAWN-DOUGLAS A STORY BEFORE HIS NAP.

BO: ... and they lived happily ever after...

SHAWN-D: (YAWNING) Their story had a happy ending.

BO LEANS OVER, STROKING SHAWN-D'S HAIR. SHAWN-DOUGLAS' HAND IS RESTING ON A STACK OF PILLOWS.
BO: Ours will too, Shawn-D, ours will, too...

SHAWN-D: Papa?

BO: Yes.

SHAWN-D: I'm sorry for hitting the mirror and making you mad.

BO GIVES SHAWN-DOUGLAS A HUG.
BO: I'm not mad, son, I'm worried. (BEAT) I think maybe we should talk to someone.

SHAWN-D: Who?

BO: There's a new doctor at the hospital and she helps people like us.

SHAWN-D: She'll fix my hand?

BO: No, she'll talk to you about what you're feeling inside.

SHAWN-D: Oh... Why?

BO: Son, do you know what your Aunt Kim used to do at the hospital?

SHAWN-D: She helped kids.

BO: That's right... How would you feel about talking to someone like that?

SHAWN-D: Would I have to stay at the hospital by myself?

BO: No. If you agree, we'll start seeing the doctor during the day, a couple times a week.

SHAWN-D: Papa, is there something wrong with me?

BO: No Shawn-Douglas, there is nothing wrong with you. This doctor will talk to you. That's all.

SHAWN-D: (HESITATES) Ok.

BO: Now why don't you go to sleep?

SHAWN-D: Will you stay with me?

BO: Of course, I will... (STROKES SHAWN-D'S HAIR) Now close your eyes...

SHAWN-D: Ok, Papa. I love you.

SHAWN-D SNUGGLES UNDER THE COVERS.
BO: I love you too, sailor, and everything is going to be all right... I will make it all right...
HOLD ON BO WATCHING HIS SON. AND OUT. FADE TO BLACK.
