JENNIFER'S HOSPITAL ROOM. JACK WALKS IN, CARRYING ABIGAIL. JENNIFER LIES IN BED.JACK: Good Morning, Mrs. Deveraux. Sorry for the early wake up call, but you know your daughter. She couldn't wait to see you this morning.
JACK LEANS OVER AND KISSES JENNIFER'S FOREHEAD. ABIGAIL REACHES OUT TOWARD JENNIFER'S FACE. JACK SITS IN THE CHAIR NEXT TO JENNIFER'S BED AND SITS ABIGAIL IN HIS LAP, LEANING AGAINST HIS CHEST, SO SHE CAN SEE HER MOTHER.JACK: (CONT'D) I trust you slept well and that the staff is tending to your every need, now that you are back with kith and kin at University Hospital? Not to complain, but Salem General was frustrating... "Horton" was not the magic word. Besides they were sorely lacking in atmosphere. (LOOKING AROUND AT THE DARKENED ROOM) Not that this is much better.
JACK AND ABIGAIL GO TO THE WINDOW AND OPEN THE BLINDS. HE LOOKS OUT THE WINDOW, THEN TURNS BACK TOWARDS JENNIFER.JACK: (CONT'D) That's better. Shed a little light on the subject. Frankly, Jennifer, Salem General was a nightmare. No one would talk with me, no one would tell me how you were or when I could see you. (SIGH) But, that's in the past. Now I'm right by your side and I'm not going anywhere until we can walk out of here together.
JACK SITS IN THE CHAIR AND SITS ABIGAIL NEXT TO JENNIFER ON THE BED. JACK SUPPORTS THE BABY AS HE LEANS IN TO TALK TO JENNIFER. ABIGAIL REACHES OUT TO PLAY WITH HER MOTHER'S HAIR.JACK: (CONT'D) (TO ABIGAIL) Yes, you and I will both be here for your mother...
THERE IS A KNOCK ON THE DOOR. JACK IS STARTLED AND TURNS. ADRIENNE AND JUSTIN WALK IN. JUSTIN IS CARRYING A LARGE BOUQUET OF FLOWERS.ADRIENNE: Good morning, big brother.
JUSTIN: Yes, top o' the morning to you, Jack.
HOLD ON JUSTIN'S BROAD SMILE, NEARLY HIDDEN BEHIND THE ENORMOUS BOUQUET.JOHN: Good Morning. Did you sleep well?CUT TO: I.S.A. HEADQUARTERS, GENEVA. JOHN IS WAITING IN AN INTERROGATION ROOM AS DANIELLE IS BROUGHT IN. THEY SIT ACROSS FROM EACH OTHER AT A TABLE.
DANIELLE: As well as could be expected. Thank you for asking them to move me, anything is better than that jail cell.
JOHN: Even though you are in custody, the I.S.A. tries to be a bit more accommodating than the local gendarmes.
DANIELLE: Thank God for that. (BEAT) Tell me, John, what is it you wanted to talk about?
JOHN: Carly. Katerina. Whatever the hell her name is... was.
DANIELLE: Katerina... sometimes it seems it's always Katerina... (SIGH) You know that I knew her when I was very young.
JOHN: What was she like?
DANIELLE: Dreadful.
JOHN: Dreadful?
DANIELLE: Horrible. Little Miss Von Leuschner thought she was better than the rest of us. And she was often cruel...
JOHN: Anything else?
DANIELLE: I knew, even then, that Katerina Von Leuschner was evil incarnate.
HOLD ON JOHN'S SHOCK.LAWRENCE: How was your evening, Vivian?CUT TO: ALAMAIN DINING ROOM. LAWRENCE AND VIVIAN ARE SITTING AT OPPOSITE ENDS OF THE DINING ROOM TABLE. LAWRENCE IS READING HIS PAPER AS VIVIAN NERVOUSLY TEARS LITTLE BITES OFF HER TOAST AND EATS THEM.
VIVIAN: Wonderful, as ever. I do so enjoy being kept a prisoner in my own home.
LAWRENCE: This is my home, Vivian.
VIVIAN: You know what I mean.
LAWRENCE: I'm afraid I'm at a loss.
VIVIAN: I'm sure.
LAWRENCE: I'm worried about Nikki, Vivian.
VIVIAN SITS UP STRAIGHT, AND HER HANDS SEEM TO SHAKE MORE.VIVIAN: What do you mean?
LAWRENCE: He's been very... distant lately.
VIVIAN: He's under a lot of pressure, Lawrence. Carly's death... and... school. This is the first time he's ever been in a public school environment... I'm sure he'd be much more comfortable in boarding school...
LAWRENCE: Nicholas stays here with me. End of discussion.
VIVIAN: Yes, Lawrence.
LAWRENCE: No, there's more to his attitude lately than just adjusting to a new school. And I don't like it.
VIVIAN: Maybe he has a cold... weather changes can sometimes cause problems like that...
LAWRENCE: I don't think so, Vivian. Although that was a nice try. You're absolutely sure you haven't mentioned anything to Nikki about my past?
VIVIAN: Absolutely. You know I would never do that.
LAWRENCE: Good. Then I needn't remind you of the consequences?
VIVIAN: No. I understand perfectly.
LAWRENCE: Good. Well, I believe I shall go upstairs. Have a good morning, Vivian.
LAWRENCE FOLDS HIS PAPER AND WALKS UP THE STAIRS. VIVIAN SITS IN HER CHAIR, HOLDING HER COFFEE CUP. SHE IS QUITE MOTIONLESS, UNTIL HER HANDS BEGIN SHAKING UNCONTROLLABLY. THE COFFEE SPILLS OVER HER HAND AND SHE DROPS THE CUP TO THE FLOOR WHERE IT SHATTERS. IVAN ENTERS.IVAN: Madame? Is there anything I can do?
VIVIAN: (WHISPERING) Take me away from here. Far, far away.
IVAN: Madame?
VIVIAN: It's time, Ivan. I can't take one more day of his cat and mouse games... his threats, his barbs... Lawrence grows more suspicious of Nikki each day and it's destroying the boy. I will not let Lawrence hurt my son!
IVAN: I understand.
VIVIAN: We have to leave here, Ivan. Tonight.
HOLD ON VIVIAN. AND OUT.
JULIE'S OFFICE. JULIE IS ON THE PHONE, ONE WAY.JULIE: I'm terribly sorry, Mr. James... No, this isn't the way I prefer to do business... No you're right, there is no excuse... I promise that this will not happen again... Yes... Thank you very much Mr. James... You won't be sorry.
JULIE HANGS UP THE PHONE AND BUZZES EVE ON THE INTERCOM.JULIE: (CONT'D) Eve, can you come in here please? I would like a few moments of your time.
EVE: Sure, be right in.
EVE WALKS IN THE DOOR.JULIE: Eve, we need to talk.
EVE: (INNOCENTLY) Julie, what's wrong?
JULIE: Eve, from the moment I stepped foot into my office this morning, I have done nothing but make amends to irate customers that want my head on a platter... I'm tempted to give them yours instead.
EVE: (WHINING) Julie... let me explain.
JULIE: Wait Eve... First, why don't I tell you the kind of job you've been doing? (PULLING OUT A LONG LIST) Let's start at the top, shall we? First, there was the mix-up about the appointment you forgot to cancel, and the buffet lunch that went along with it. That costs us a hefty sum of money for food we did not need. While the Salem Mission was grateful for the edible donation, I think the incident would have been best avoided. (BEAT) Shall I continue?
EVE: (STUNNED) Well...
JULIE: Let us not forget the soda that you spilled over the ad contracts I had sitting on my desk. And need I even mention the fact that you should not have been sitting at my desk in the first place?
EVE: I apologized for that once already, Julie.
JULIE: (IGNORING EVE) And now I get a call from Mr. James, one of Midsummer's advertisers, because I failed to approve the copy for his ad. Only I didn't fail to approve it, I just failed in asking you to fax it to his office. Should I expect any more surprises of a disastrous nature? I'd like to be forewarned.
EVE: (SARCASTICALLY) No Julie, I think you hit them all.
JULIE: So Eve, where does that leave us?
EVE: Julie, I really am trying, I just don't think I'm cut out to be a secretary.
JULIE: No, Eve, you never tried. You spent your time flirting with the employees, talking on the phone and gold-digging when you were supposed to be working. If you had tried, none of this would have happened.
EVE: I'll try harder, I promise.
JULIE: Eve, I have let you try. I've given you more chances than I would have given anyone else because I care about you. But no more, my business is suffering.
EVE: What are you saying?
JULIE: I'm sorry Eve, I have no choice but to fire you.
EVE: What? Fire Me? You can't do that!
JULIE: I can and I am. A lot of people depend on me. Jack trusted me. I can't let down any of them.
EVE: I thought you were my friend. I thought you wanted to help me.
JULIE: I do, Eve. But this isn't the way.
EVE: You're not my friend! You're nothing but a dictator and a terrible boss. You never cared about me. The only person you care about is yourself... and maybe that stuck-up family of yours...
JULIE: Eve, I warn you, leave my family out of this.
EVE: (FURIOUS) In this town, if you're not a Horton than you just don't count. Well I've had it up to here (POINTS TO HER FOREHEAD) with the whole Horton clan and with you, Julie Williams. Don't worry about firing me because I quit.
EVE STORMS OUT OF JULIE'S OFFICE AND JULIE STARES AFTER HER. HOLD ON JULIE'S ASTONISHMENT.JACK: What? Adrienne? Justin? What... come in, come in!CUT TO: JENNIFER'S HOSPITAL ROOM. JACK LOOKS UP IN SURPRISE AT JUSTIN AND ADRIENNE AND THEIR FLOWERS. JACK, HOLDING ABIGAIL, STANDS.
ADRIENNE WALKS IN AND HUGS JACK AND ABIGAIL, AS JUSTIN WATCHES.ADRIENNE: Hi. How are you holding up?
JACK: I'm... holding up.
JUSTIN: Where should I put these?
JACK: How about next to Jennifer, on that table, (POINTING) so she can see them.
JUSTIN PUTS DOWN THE BOUQUET OF FLOWERS.JACK: (CONT'D) On Jennifer's behalf, I should thank you for these flowers.
ADRIENNE: It's the least we could do.
JACK IS STANDING CLOSE TO THE BOUQUET AND ABIGAIL REACHES OVER AND BEGINS PULLING AT THE FLOWERS, HER EYES WIDE WITH INTEREST. BEFORE JACK CAN STOP HER, SHE POPS A LEAF IN HER MOUTH, BUT MAKES A FACE AND SPITS IT OUT.JACK: And it looks like I should thank you on my daughter's behalf. She seems to be quite... intrigued.
JUSTIN: (LOOKING AT ABIGAIL) She's a beauty...
JACK: (SOFTLY) Like her mother...
JUSTIN: May I hold her? (GESTURING AT ABIGAIL)
JACK: Well...
JACK RELUCTANTLY HANDS ABIGAIL TO JUSTIN. UNNOTICED BY JACK, JUSTIN AND ADRIENNE EXCHANGE CONSPIRATORIAL GLANCES. ADRIENNE PULLS JACK TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROOM AS JUSTIN COOS OVER HIS NIECE.ADRIENNE: Look at all these flowers...
ADRIENNE ADMIRES THE VAST ARRAY OF FLOWERS.JACK: Yes, the Hortons have provided us with a plethora of flora. So have the staff at the Spectator... and some people from the TV station. I'm beginning to feel like I'm in a primeval jungle.
ADRIENNE: It's nice to know so many people care.
JACK: Tragedy seems to bring out the best in people.
ADRIENNE: It helps pull people together.
JUSTIN, HOLDING ABIGAIL, WALKS TO JACK AND ADRIENNE.JUSTIN: Jack? Abby's getting a little fussy. Would you mind if I took her to the cafeteria for some juice?
JACK: Well, maybe someone could bring it up here... She can be... discriminating... about from whom she'll take food...
ADRIENNE: Don't be silly. Justin has managed with four boys. I doubt one little girl will cause him any problems.
JUSTIN: (SOTTO VOICE) Unless she takes after her daddy.
JACK: Thank you.
JUSTIN GRINS AT HIM, EYEBROW RAISED.JACK: (CONT'D) All right. Go ahead. But don't make a habit of it.
JUSTIN LEAVES, TOSSING A CONSPIRATORIAL LOOK AT ADRIENNE, WHO SMILES AND WAVES GOOD-BYE TO HIM AND ABIGAIL.ADRIENNE: So, big brother. How are you holding up?
JACK: Fine, just fine. I'm not the one lying in that bed... in a coma...
ADRIENNE: Are you sure? Maybe you should get some rest.
JACK: Rest? How can I rest with my wife lying here, never knowing if she'll ever wake up?
ADRIENNE: Jack, Jennifer needs for you to be strong. She needs you now more than ever. You need to take care of yourself, for her sake.
JACK: I don't care about myself... all I care about is making sure that Jennifer gets better.
HOLD ON JACK'S ANGUISH.DOUG: Well, the paint is dry, the supplies are in...CUT TO: WINGS. DOUG AND DAVE ARE WALKING AROUND, LOOKING AT THE CLUB'S NEW DECOR IN SATISFACTION.
DAVE: The chef is ready, the kitchen is stocked...
DOUG: This is it. My new club. All ready to go.
DAVE: Thought of a name yet?
DOUG: I'm still searching. I want it to be perfect...
DAVE: (ROLLING HIS EYES) Naturally.
DOUG: All we need to do now is staff the joint.
DAVE: Have fun interviewing everyone.
DOUG: What do you mean, "have fun"? How could I not have fun with you by my side?
DAVE: Oh, no. I've been through this before...
DOUG: Just what I need, an experienced interviewer!
DAVE: No... no...
DOUG: It's time to open the doors and let the interviews begin!
DOUG OPENS THE DOORS AS DAVE WINCES. MUSIC BEGINS: ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN'S "PEOPLE ARE STRANGE."DAVE: You're sure you're over 21?GO TO: DAVE, INTERVIEWING A VERY YOUNG MAN.
KID: Yeah, sure I'm sure!
DAVE: Can I see some I.D.?
THE KID PULLS OUT HIS WALLET AND AT LEAST 6 DRIVERS LICENSES FALL ONTO THE FLOOR.KID: Oops. Never mind.
GO TO: DOUG, INTERVIEWING A YOUNG WOMAN WEARING A VERY LOW CUT BLOUSE.DOUG: So, do you have much experience?
WOMAN: Not in this incarnation, no...
GO TO: DAVE, INTERVIEWING A HYPERACTIVE YOUNG MAN.DAVE: Do you have much experience tending bar?
MAN: Experience? Watch this, man! Tom Cruise, eat your heart out!
THE MAN VAULTS OVER THE BAR AS DAVE VAINLY ATTEMPTS TO STOP HIM. THE MAN GRABS 2 BOTTLES AND BEGINS JUGGLING THEM. BOTH CRASH TO THE FLOOR AND SHATTER.MAN: Damn. Cut myself.
GO TO: DOUG, INTERVIEWING ANOTHER WOMAN.DOUG: You say you have a Master's Degree?
WOMAN#2: Yes, but it's in English, and it's so hard to find a job with an English degree these days, don't you think? And of course, there's always the problem of... them.
DOUG: Them?
WOMAN#2: The Martians. They keep following me around... No one will hire me once they know about the Martians...
GO TO: DAVE INTERVIEWING A VERY LARGE MAN IN BLACK LEATHER.DAVE: And you do have bartending experience?
MAN#2: Yeah. At Gutbuster's, down in Florida.
DAVE: Why did you leave?
MAN#2: Look, I don't care what the cops said, it was an accident, okay?
GO TO: DOUG, INTERVIEWING A TALL, HEAVILY-MADE UP, BLONDE.DOUG: Well, let's take a look at your resumé... it says here your name is... Jeffrey?!?
THE "WOMAN" SMILES.MAN#3: I may be a bartender, but I don't go for this "the bartender is your friend" thing. I pour drinks, that's it. I don't talk. I don't listen. You want advice, go watch Oprah.GO TO: DAVE, SLOUCHED DOWN IN HIS CHAIR, LOOKING LIKE HE HAS A HEADACHE. HE IS TALKING TO AN OLDER MAN.
DAVE PUTS HIS HEAD IN HIS HANDS. HOLD ON THE LINE OF WAITING WEIRDOS. AND OUT.
INTERROGATION ROOM, I.S.A. HEADQUARTERS, GENEVA. JOHN AND DANIELLE ARE SEATED. IN PROGRESS.JOHN: Carly was into trouble even when she was young?
DANIELLE: I didn't say she was into trouble, I said she was evil. She was never in trouble herself, but she was getting others into plenty of trouble.
JOHN: Including you?
DANIELLE: Especially me. She always had something against me. It seemed that her sole purpose in life was to make me miserable. And she would never hesitate to remind me that she could have me and my mother thrown out any time she wanted.
JOHN: Your mother was dismissed from her job with the Von Leuschners, wasn't she?
DANIELLE: Yes, and it was all Katerina's doing.
JOHN: What happened?
DANIELLE: Well, I had been stealing small valuables from the Von Leuschners...
JOHN: (INTERRUPTING) You what?
DANIELLE: Please don't start. For all their wealth, the Von Leuschners were not very kind to my mother. We had a room and food to eat, and not much else.
JOHN: So you stole from your mother's employers?
DANIELLE: It wasn't all about money. Yes, I took things and sold them on the street. But that was only part of it.
JOHN: What do you mean?
DANIELLE: It was the only way I could think of to get back at Katerina for the way she treated me.
JOHN: I see... So what does this have to do with your mother's dismissal?
DANIELLE: Well, one night, I was taking some jewelry from Katerina, and she saw me leave her room. She asked me why I was there. I told her I was looking for my mother and apologized for going into her room without asking permission.
JOHN: What did she do?
DANIELLE: Nothing. She accepted my apology, and said nothing more about it. She led me to think that it was forgotten.
JOHN: But...
DANIELLE: But the next day, Henri Von Leuschner came to our room. He told my mother that she was dismissed, and that we had to be out by the end of the day. My mother asked why, and he said that he heard she was the one who was stealing things.
JOHN: And you think it was Carly that told him?
DANIELLE: I'm sure of it. She was standing right behind him, watching, with the most twisted smile... I'll never forget that look on her face. (BEAT) The little monster had accused my mother of what I had done in order to have both of us thrown out.
JOHN: So she finally followed through on her threat.
DANIELLE: Yes.
JOHN: It's hard to believe that she was so hateful and cruel at such a young age. How old was she at that time?
DANIELLE: Ten. (BEAT) Ten years old, and she had the power to ruin my mother's life, and mine.
JOHN: I'm sorry...
THE DOOR OPENS AND SHANE ENTERS.JOHN: (CONT'D) Shane, hello!
SHANE: Good afternoon, John. (NODDING TO DANIELLE) Miss Stevens.
DANIELLE: (COOLLY) Captain.
JOHN: Hey, Shane, I wanted to thank you for arranging for Dani to be held here instead of the police station. I know she really appreciates it... (LOOKING AT DANIELLE) Right, Dani?
DANIELLE: (GRUDGINGLY) Yes, I do. (SMILING UNCONVINCINGLY AT SHANE) Thank you, Captain Donovan.
SHANE: (SUSPICIOUSLY) You're welcome. (TO JOHN) So, how are things going?
JOHN: Very well, actually. I think we're making some good progress. (BEAT) Hey, speaking of progress, any word on extending Dani's stay here in Geneva?
SHANE: I'm working on it, but the Brussels police are not very patient. I'm not sure how much more time I can give you, if any. I've already called in just about every favor owed to me anywhere in Europe.
JOHN: I understand. Whatever you're able to do, we're grateful to you for trying.
SHANE: I'll do my best. In the meantime, I recommend that you two talk as much and as quickly as possible. Time is running out.
HOLD ON SHANE.KAYLA: What do you think of a balloon arch over there? It would set a festive mood.CUT TO: COMMUNITY CENTER. KAYLA, CANDIS, ALICE AND MAGGIE ARE SEATED. IN PROGRESS.
MAGGIE: I love that! We could carry the theme through with balloon centerpieces on all the tables.
CANDIS: Why don't we raffle them off at the end of the night? Everyone loves balloons.
JO COMES IN, WEARING A PORTABLE STEREO AND CARRYING A TOTE BAG.JO: Sorry I'm late. Kayla, honey, you won't mind if I don't stay for the whole meeting? I want to get to the hospital and check on Jennifer.
ALICE: Jo, dear, have you been out power walking?
JO: (LAUGHING) Me? Heavens no. Give me Richard Simmons "Sweating to the Oldies" any day. (POINTING TO THE TAPES AND PORTABLE STEREO) These are for Jennifer. I just wanted to make sure the batteries worked.
CANDIS: For Jennifer?
JO: Yes. I've been doing some reading. Did you know many doctors believe coma patients can hear everything that goes on around them? So I went and got some of her favorite music and a couple of books on tape. I thought it might help...
MAGGIE: That's a wonderful idea! It certainly can't hurt.
ALICE: And it will save poor Jack's voice. He's gotten positively hoarse, reading to Jennifer.
JO: Yes, that's what I thought.
KAYLA: You know, I've been wondering if we should go ahead with the benefit. Maybe we should wait until Jennifer is well.
ALICE: I think if Jennifer were here she would tell us to go ahead. She believes in the Community Center and all the good it's done for Salem.
CANDIS: Has there been any change in her condition?
MAGGIE: No, not really. She was stable enough to be moved to University Hospital, but other than that... She isn't worse, though, and that's a good sign.
CANDIS: If there is anything I can do, please, please let me know.
ALICE: Thank you Candis. All we can really do is pray. And hope.
JO: I think I'll go to the hospital now. Kayla, I'll call you tonight and you can fill me in on the rest of the plans.
KAYLA: All right. Give Jennifer a big kiss from all of us... And Jack, too.
ALICE: How is Jack? Has he been getting enough rest? And eating?
JO: You know Jack. He's... Jack. I realize he doesn't like me to fuss over him. But it's hard not to worry...
ALICE: I know, Jo. No matter how old either of you gets, your son will always be your baby.
JO NODS. HOLD ON JO.VIVIAN: Damn!CUT TO: ALAMAIN LIVING ROOM/SOLARIUM. VIVIAN IS IN THE SOLARIUM, ATTEMPTING TO TEND TO HER ORCHIDS. SHE IS HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME, HOWEVER, BECAUSE SHE CANNOT KEEP HER HANDS FROM SHAKING. SHE DROPS A PAIR OF CLIPPERS ON THE FLOOR.
SHE KNEELS DOWN TO PICK UP THE CLIPPERS.VIVIAN: (CONT'D) Get a hold of yourself, Vivian. You must stay in control, for Nikki's sake.
VIVIAN STANDS UP, UNAWARE THAT LAWRENCE IS STANDING RIGHT BEHIND HER. SHE PAUSES, SENSING THAT SHE IS BEING WATCHED. SHE TURNS AROUND AND JUMPS WHEN SHE SEES LAWRENCE.VIVIAN: (CONT'D) (STARTLED) Oh! (BEAT, AS SHE GATHERS HERSELF) Lawrence, you scared me to death!
LAWRENCE: I'm sorry, Vivian. (OMINOUSLY) I didn't mean to frighten you.
VIVIAN: Of course not.
LAWRENCE: Is something wrong, Vivian? You look quite pale.
VIVIAN: (TRYING TO HIDE HER SHAKING HANDS) I've been feeling a bit under the weather recently. It's probably just the change of seasons from summer to autumn. I'll be fine.
LAWRENCE: (MOCKING CONCERN) Oh, Auntie, I do hope it's nothing serious. It would be terrible if you were ill, and needed full-time professional care. You might not be able to live here anymore, and that would be a shame.
LAWRENCE SLOWLY BUT FIRMLY TAKES THE CLIPPERS FROM VIVIAN'S HAND.LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) The orchids look lovely. You do such a good job taking care of them.
VIVIAN: (WEAKLY) Thank you.
LAWRENCE CUTS ONE OF THE ORCHIDS. HE SNIFFS IT AND SMILES. HE THEN DROPS IT TO THE GROUND. HE LOOKS AT VIVIAN AND RAISES HIS EYEBROWS, HIS SMILE GONE. HE REACHES DOWN TOWARD THE ORCHID AND SIMULTANEOUSLY STEPS ON IT AND GRINDS IT UNDER HIS FOOT. HE LOOKS AT VIVIAN WITH A MOCKINGLY SAD POUT.LAWRENCE: I'm so sorry, Auntie. (LOOKING DOWN AT THE CRUSHED ORCHID) So sad.
HE HANDS THE CLIPPERS BACK TO VIVIAN.LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) Regretfully, I must be going. I have a meeting at the office. (BEAT) Take care of yourself, Vivian. You're looking rather peaked.
LAWRENCE EXITS. VIVIAN SETS THE CLIPPERS DOWN AND WALKS SLOWLY INTO THE LIVING ROOM. SHE LISTENS CLOSELY UNTIL SHE HEARS THE FRONT DOOR CLOSE.VIVIAN: Ivan! (BEAT) Ivan!
IVAN ENTERS.IVAN: Oui, madame?
VIVIAN: Is everything ready for our departure?
IVAN: Yes, madame. I have made the necessary arrangements.
VIVIAN: Good. (BEAT) I need you to go fetch Nikki from school. Tell them it's a family emergency.
IVAN: As you wish.
VIVIAN: In the meantime, I need to pack a few things. Lawrence has gone to the office, but I don't know how long it will be before he comes back. We need to move quickly.
IVAN: I will leave right away.
IVAN EXITS.VIVIAN: Yes, we need to move quickly. We're running for our lives.
OUT ON VIVIAN'S DISTRESS.
DONOVAN LIVING ROOM. EVE IS STORMING AROUND THE ROOM, THROWING PILLOWS AND YELLING AT THE WALLS. "THE BITCH IS BACK" BY ELTON JOHN PLAYS IN THE BACKGROUND.EVE: How dare she fire me? I should have quit when I had the chance... She made my life miserable... always complaining about this, asking me to do that... Who in the hell does she think she is?
EVE THROWS HERSELF DOWN ON THE COUCH AND GRABS A PILLOW, HUGGING IT TIGHTLY.EVE: (CONT'D) I don't understand what her problem is? So I made a few mistakes, big deal. (SIGH) But now I am unemployed again. What am I going to do? How am I going to survive?
EVE STANDS UP, THROWS THE PILLOW ON THE COUCH AND STARTS PACING AROUND THE LIVING ROOM.EVE: (CONT'D) I suppose I could call Julie and ask for my job back... Wait what am I saying? Apologize to her? Never. She doesn't deserve an apology from me, she should be the one apologizing to me.
EVE SITS DOWN AT THE DESK, PICKS UP A PICTURE OF HER AND SHANE AND STARES AT IT.EVE: (CONT'D) Oh God... What am I going to do? I don't have any money, I don't have any friends, Dad is in Europe... Gabrielle is in New York...
EVE'S EYES WELL WITH TEARS, BUT SHE QUICKLY BRUSHES THEM AWAY.EVE: (CONT'D) I have to find a job... I have to take care of myself... No one else will...
EVE PUTS DOWN THE PICTURE.EVE: (CONT'D) Eve Donovan, alone again. (BEAT) Think, Evie. You're smarter than this. What can you do? (SIGHS) You know what you can do, you can find Julie and beg her for another chance or maybe... an advance on Nick's money...
EVE PICKS UP THE PHONE AND DIALS. ONE WAY.EVE: (CONT'D) Yes, I'd like to speak to Julie Williams, please... Oh she's not... Do you know where she went... Where?... Doug's Place? Oh yeah, Wings... right... No, no message... Thank-you.
EVE HANGS UP THE PHONE.EVE: (CONT'D) Doug's Place? How "original." I hate to even think about what they've done to Nick's club.
EVE GETS UP FROM THE DESK AND HEADS TO THE DOOR.EVE: (CONT'D) Julie, look out, here I come.
HOLD ON EVE WALKING OUT THE DOOR.JO: Well, hello there!CUT TO: SM. NURSES' STATION/LOUNGE. JUSTIN IS RETURNING FROM THE CAFETERIA WITH ABIGAIL, WHO IS HOLDING A COOKIE IN EACH HAND. JO GETS OFF THE ELEVATOR.
JUSTIN LEANS OVER TO KISS JO ON THE CHEEK.JUSTIN: Hi, Grandma!
JO: Two cookies? I see you've twisted another man around that little finger of yours, Abby.
JUSTIN: What can I say? I'm a pushover for big blue eyes.
JO: Like Adrienne's? (LOOKING AROUND) Where is Adrienne?
JUSTIN: She's in with Jack and Jennifer. Abby was a little fussy, so we went to get some juice... and cookies.
JO: Why don't we give Jack and Adrienne some time to catch up and we can do the same?
JUSTIN: (NODDING TO THE LOUNGE) Shall we?
THEY ENTER THE LOUNGE AND SIT DOWN. JO TAKES ABIGAIL FROM JUSTIN.JO: I feel like I haven't talked to you in ages.
JUSTIN: Jo... You talk to us once a week!
JO: No, I talk to Adrienne once a week. I hardly ever talk to you. How is everything?
JUSTIN: Everything is wonderful. We absolutely love Texas.
JO: And your job?
JUSTIN: It's going quite well. I think I might be up for a promotion soon if things keep going the way they are. Although that would mean longer hours, which I don't like because it keeps me away from my family...
ABIGAIL SQUIRMS AROUND AND BEGINS TO FUSS. JO RUMMAGES IN HER TOTE BAG AND PULLS OUT A STUFFED GIRAFFE, WHICH ABIGAIL LAUGHS AT AND REACHES FOR.JO: Look, Abby... See what I brought you? It's Jeffrey the Giraffe!
JUSTIN: You're still spoiling your grandchildren, I see.
JO: It's in the Grandmother's Handbook, you know. How are those rambunctious grandsons of mine?
JUSTIN: Rowdy as ever. I think Texas suits them. They do everything in a big way. Did Adrienne tell you about what they did last week?
HOLD ON JO AND JUSTIN, DEEP IN CONVERSATION.JOHN: I hope Shane can buy us some more time...CUT TO: INTERROGATION ROOM, I.S.A. HEADQUARTERS, GENEVA. JOHN AND DANIELLE ARE TALKING. IN PROGRESS.
DANIELLE: Yes. Now that Katerina is dead, and I can speak freely, there's so much I want to tell you.
JOHN: But first, I need to know what else you can tell me about Carly. I know that she was responsible for ending our marriage. I was hoping you could fill in some of the details.
DANIELLE: (SURPRISED) How did you find out...
JOHN: That's not really important right now. (BEAT) Why don't you pick up where you left off? Carly had gotten your mother fired...
DANIELLE: We were penniless. Mother tried to find work again as a housekeeper, but Henri Von Leuschner made sure that none of the prominent families would hire her.
JOHN: What did you do?
DANIELLE: We did what we could. She worked as a waitress, a cook, whatever she could find. I went to school and did odd jobs to try to help mother. When I finished secondary school I started working full time as well. Still, we barely survived.
JOHN: When did you start making a career as a thief?
DANIELLE: When Katerina tracked me down.
JOHN: She tracked you down? Why?
DANIELLE: She wanted me to steal a very valuable piece of jewelry for her. My first thought was to wring her neck, but then she told me how much money she would pay me... I couldn't refuse.
JOHN: This doesn't make any sense. She could afford to buy anything she wanted. Why would she have you steal it for her?
DANIELLE: I don't know. I didn't really care. I knew Katerina was twisted, and I wasn't interested in her motives.
JOHN: You never wondered why?
DANIELLE: Even if I had wondered, I never would have asked. Mother was becoming ill, and I needed the money to take care of her. So I did the job.
JOHN: And Romulus was born.
DANIELLE: Yes. That's how it started. Katerina was pleased with the first job, so she hired me for others. I became better and better at stealing. (BEAT) It's ironic that the woman I hated most was the one who helped me find my true calling in life...
JOHN: Dani...
DANIELLE: There's no disputing it, John. Stealing was the only thing at which I ever excelled. (BEAT) I began to branch out, doing jobs on my own in order to get more cash.
JOHN: Your mother?
DANIELLE: Yes, she began to get worse. She eventually had to be moved to a hospital, so they could care for her 24 hours a day. I had to keep stealing in order to pay for it.
JOHN: How long did this go on?
DANIELLE: Over a year. But then, something happened. My whole outlook on life changed, and I didn't want to be Romulus anymore.
JOHN: What happened?
DANIELLE: I met a man and fell head over heels in love with him. He was an extraordinary man... handsome, kind, courageous, and smart. (BEAT) His name was John Stevens.
OUT ON DANIELLE'S SMILE.
JANET'S OFFICE. JANET IS AT HER DESK, A BOX OF DONUTS IN FRONT OF HER. MORGAN OPENS THE DOOR WITHOUT KNOCKING AND ENTERS.MORGAN: I just took that fax from Geneva down to Ballistics. They're going to check the I.S.A. report against the bullet we got out of Brady.
JANET: Did they say when they'd have the analysis done?
MORGAN: I asked them to rush it, but you know Ballistics. They won't be hurried.
JANET PICKS UP A DONUT AND BEGINS TO PICK IT APART AND CRUMBLE IT.JANET: This case is beginning to give me serious agita. How many more suspects are going to come out of the woodwork?
MORGAN: Hearing from Shane Donovan knocked me for a loop, too.
JANET: Who is this Danielle Stevens? Other than an international jewel thief, that is.
JANET LOOKS DOWN AT HER HANDS AND REALIZES WHAT SHE'S DOING. SHE PUSHES THE REMAINS OF THE DONUT AWAY WITH DISGUST.JANET: (CONT'D) (SOTTO VOCE) And where are these donuts coming from? They keep appearing...
MORGAN: I checked the Interpol report we got on Dr. Manning, but Ms. Stevens wasn't on it. All I could get out of Shane was that she and Carly knew each other as children. I gather she knows John Black as well.
JANET: Isn't anything ever easy in this town?
MORGAN: (GRINNING) Well, now that you mention it... (BEAT) Look, there's no use going any further with this until we hear back from Ballistics. Let me fill you in on the Deveraux case.
JANET: Yes. What happened with the family?
MORGAN: The parents were like raving lunatics. Not that I blame them. I finally had to convince them to go for a walk so the kids would talk to me.
JANET: And?
MORGAN: They gave me a guest list, as far as they could remember, anyway. I've got Joe and Fred out now, checking alibis.
JANET: Good. I want the person responsible for this.
THERE IS A KNOCK ON THE DOOR AND SPENCER HANLEN POKES HIS HEAD IN.SPENCER: H'lo Captain. Morgan. You got a minute? I need to talk to you about the Bartoli case.
HOLD ON SPENCER.NICHOLAS: Aunt Viv! What's going on? Why does Ivan want me to pack?CUT TO: VIVIAN'S BEDROOM. VIVIAN IS HURRIEDLY PACKING A SMALL SUITCASE. IVAN ENTERS, FOLLOWED BY NICHOLAS, WHO IS OBVIOUSLY QUITE AGITATED.
VIVIAN: Darling, the three of us are taking a little trip...
NICHOLAS: What? Where?
VIVIAN: I think we'll go to Paris first, then to Austria... maybe Switzerland or Italy...
NICHOLAS: But why? What's happening?
VIVIAN SITS ON THE BED AND PUTS HER HANDS ON NICHOLAS' SHOULDERS AND TURNS HIM TO FACE HER.VIVIAN: Darling, the atmosphere around this house has become too... oppressive. I think we should get away and take a little vacation.
NICHOLAS: (REALIZATION) It's Lawrence, isn't it? He did something to scare you, and now we're running away.
VIVIAN: Nikki, my little love, adults don't "run away."
NICHOLAS: But that's what we're doing, isn't it? We're running away. Aunt Viv, I don't care if Lawrence is my father. I won't let him hurt you. I won't!
VIVIAN: Nikki, darling, please... We have to remain calm if we want this to work.
NICHOLAS: I understand.
VIVIAN: Good. Now why don't we go to your room and pack some things?
NICHOLAS: Okay.
VIVIAN: (TO IVAN) Take my suitcase downstairs. Put it in the solarium, Lawrence never goes there.
IVAN: Oui, Madame.
NICHOLAS AND VIVIAN EXIT AS IVAN PICKS UP THE SUITCASE.IAN: It appears as if you've been put through the ringer...CUT TO: WINGS. DOUG SITS SLUMPED IN A CHAIR, EXHAUSTED. THE LONG LINE OF ODD INTERVIEWEES HAS DISAPPEARED. ONE LONE MAN, IAN MORELAND, ENTERS. HE APPROACHES DOUG, AND LETS OUT A LONG, LOW WHISTLE...
DOUG: Yes, it has been a very long day..
IAN: Mr. Williams, right?
DOUG STANDS AND EXTENDS HIS HAND. THE MEN SHAKE HANDS AND IAN GIVES DOUG HIS RESUMÉ.DOUG: Is it that obvious, Mr. (CHECKS RESUME) Moreland?
IAN: Only to the trained eye... but don't worry, I'll go easy on you...
BOTH MEN LAUGH.DOUG: Well, let's see how trained you are... Hmmm, your resumé indicates a man of many talents...
IAN: I've picked up a lot, here and there...
DOUG: What are you looking for in a job? This is a new club, you know.
IAN: Actually, I didn't have anything specific in mind. I've been in town a few weeks, settling in, and my friend Marcus suggested I come in...
DOUG: Marcus, as in Dr. Marcus Hunter?
IAN: Indeed. He told me you and your lady wife ran a "first class joint." So I decided to check it out...
DOUG: Well, I'll have to thank Marcus, both for his kind words, and for sending you. How do you know him?
IAN: We met in San Francisco a couple years ago, Marcus was at a medical convention. We hit it off over beers in a blues bar, and have kept in touch ever since.
DOUG: Well, I know Marcus keeps good company. And if he's as fine a judge of character as he is of "first class joints," I suspect we'll be able to find something for you...
OUT ON DOUG.
JENNIFER'S ROOM. JACK AND ADRIENNE ARE AT JENNIFER'S BEDSIDE AS JO AND JUSTIN WALK IN WITH ABIGAIL.JACK: (REACHING FOR ABIGAIL) So, was the child too much trouble?
JUSTIN HANDS ABIGAIL TO JACK AND GRINS.JUSTIN: Jack, if you think one little girl is trouble, feel free to spend some time with our four boys!
JACK: I think I'll pass, thanks...
JUSTIN: Adrienne, this little sweetheart (STROKING ABIGAIL'S HEAD) has gotten me thinking, maybe we should try for a girl next time?
ADRIENNE: Justin Kiriakis, if you think we can deal with one more toddler right now you are plumb out of your mind!
JACK: (EYEBROW RAISED) "Plumb out of his mind"?
ADRIENNE: Sorry. Texas talk.
ADRIENNE AND JO EXCHANGE A LOOK, AND ADRIENNE CROSSES TO JUSTIN AND BEGINS TO EDGE HIM OUT OF THE ROOM.ADRIENNE: (CONT'D) Why don't we go for a walk down to the cafeteria and get something to eat, sweetie?
JUSTIN: What? I just got back from the cafeteria.
ADRIENNE: So now you know where you're going. Come on!
JUSTIN: Women!
JUSTIN AND ADRIENNE LEAVE, THE SOUND OF THEIR PLAYFUL BICKERING FADING IN THE DISTANCE.JO: Have you learned anything else about who did this to Jennifer?
JACK: Not really. The police are working on it. Captain Yamada has promised to keep me updated.
JO: I'm sure everything will work out for the best.
JACK: You're always sure, aren't you?
JO: At least Abby seems to be in good spirits.
JO REACHES OVER AND JACK HANDS HER HIS DAUGHTER.JACK: That's one small miracle, at least.
JO: That's no miracle, Jack. That's you. That's you being there for your wife and your daughter. It's your strength that will pull all of you through.
JACK: What? Me, strong? The one who... who... can't even open a jar without help from his wife?
JO: Now Jack, you know what I mean. It's your inner strength.
JACK: Are you going to get sentimental?
JO: Yes. And don't tell me you're not, Jack Deveraux, because I know better.
JACK: OK, I surrender. I'm too tired to argue. (BEAT) You're right, I have finally found that inner strength and its source...
JO: Oh?
JACK: It comes from Jennifer and Abigail Johanna... and you and Adrienne... from my family.
JO: Oh, son...
JACK: It took some words of wisdom from... a friend to help me see that.
JO: A wise friend.
JACK: Yes, she is. She's one of the best...
JACK TAKES JENNIFER'S HAND.JACK: (CONT'D) And it took two tragedies for me to realize that.
JO GETS UP AND HANDS ABIGAIL BACK TO HER FATHER.JACK: (CONT'D) Jo?
JO: Yes?
JACK: Thank you. Thank you for being here.
JO: You're welcome, son. Now I'm going to go find Justin and Adrienne and leave you alone with your family for a while.
JO LEAVES. JACK SETTLES DOWN NEXT TO JENNIFER'S BED, ABIGAIL LYING IN THE CROOK OF ONE ARM AS HE REACHES OUT WITH HIS OTHER HAND TO HOLD JENNIFER'S HAND. HOLD ON THE FAMILY GROUP.MAGGIE: I do hope Jack was able to get a little rest today.CUT TO: COMMUNITY CENTER. KAYLA, CANDIS, ALICE AND MAGGIE. IN PROGRESS.
ALICE: I don't think he's had a decent meal since the accident. He's living on coffee.
CLOSE UP ON KAYLA. WE SEE A BRIEF FLASHBACK OF KAYLA AT STEVE'S BEDSIDE. CAROLINE IS THERE, TELLING HER TO GET SOME REST, BUT KAYLA SAYS NO, SHE CAN'T LEAVE STEVE.CANDIS: I certainly hope that Morgan can find out who's responsible. I know that Janet is anxious about it.
ALICE: Jack mentioned that Captain Yamada came by the hospital the other day. He's very appreciative of everything the police are doing.
HOLD ON KAYLA'S FACE, WE SEE ANOTHER FLASHBACK. BO IS NEXT TO HER, TELLING HER THAT HE WILL FIND OUT WHO DID THIS TO STEVE AND MAKE THEM PAY.MAGGIE: Jennifer is strong. I know she'll pull through this.
ALICE: Of course she will. We won't let her do anything else.
HOLD ON KAYLA. WE SEE A FLASHBACK. STEVE IS AWAKE, TELLING HER THAT HE CAME BACK FOR HER AND FOR STEPHANIE. CUT TO: THE DOCTOR TELLING HER THAT STEVE HAS SUDDENLY TAKEN A TURN FOR THE WORSE, THEY'RE LOSING HIM. BACK TO PRESENT ON KAYLA, AS SHE SUDDENLY JUMPS UP FROM THE TABLE, AGITATED.KAYLA: No we won't. (QUICKLY, THE WORDS RUNNING OVER EACH OTHER) Now, let's get back to the benefit, shall we? Julie said she would donate the guest tables and the linens. How many people do you think we can seat in here?
THE THREE OTHER WOMEN LOOK AT EACH OTHER CURIOUSLY.CANDIS: I think we could easily fit 100 people in here. Now, were you thinking of a buffet or a sit down dinner?
KAYLA: (STILL JITTERY) A buffet would be easier. What do you think? Alice? Maggie?
HOLD ON KAYLA.DOUG: So it just depends on what interests you...CUT TO: WINGS. DOUG AND IAN, IN PROGRESS.
IAN: Well, I do want to work with the crowds, be part of the action... maybe some managing, some DJ'ing, maybe even some bouncing...
DOUG: Well, consider yourself hired, Ian, and we'll hash out the job title when I have a better line on any other talent I can entice into my employment...
IAN: Sounds excellent, Doug... I look forward to working with you.
IAN AND DOUG AGAIN SHAKE HANDS, AS JULIE ENTERS.JULIE: Hello, darling
JULIE PRESSES A BRIEF KISS TO DOUG'S CHEEK.DOUG: Julie, wonderful! I'd like to introduce you to my saviour for today, Mr. Ian Moreland. Ian's the only one of the several million people I interviewed today that was worth the energy spent...
JULIE: Well, then I'm quite pleased to meet you, any saviour of Doug's is a saviour of mine...
ALL LAUGH.IAN: I'm charmed, Mrs. Williams. Doug mentioned you inspired much of the decorating here... Dare I hope that might be your line of work?
JULIE: Thank you... I was an interior designer a long time ago, but no more. If you're looking for a decorator, I can recommend one, she was my right hand on the club...
IAN: That would be wonderful. I just moved here, and my home is currently a shambles...
JULIE: Where are you from?
IAN: Originally from the Bay Area in California. I've done some rambling around the country, but eventually, I knew I wanted to settle here in Salem, at least for a while.
JULIE: Curious... why Salem?
IAN: I had the good fortune to meet Marcus Hunter while I was still in The City. He's spent much of our acquaintance extolling the virtues of your lovely town. And I must say, he was quite correct, down to the friendliness of the citizens, lovely ladies (BOWS TO JULIE) and new bosses (NODS TO DOUG) alike...
DOUG: Well, I for one am thrilled you found your way here, and to the club. You'll be a welcome addition...
IAN: Thank you. I'll leave you two, then... Mrs. Williams, my pleasure, Doug, I'll see you tomorrow morning?
JULIE IS ABOUT TO REPLY WHEN EVE ENTERS THE ROOM LIKE A WHIRLWIND. JULIE FORESTALLS EVE WITH A LOOK.JULIE: Ian, call me Julie. Eve, this is Ian Moreland, Doug's new... um... employee... Ian, this is Eve Donovan.
IAN: (GIVES EVE A CURIOUS ONCE-OVER, AND EXTENDS HIS HAND) A pleasure, Ms. Donovan.
EVE: Wha... oh... yeah, I'm sure. (SHE GIVES IAN'S HAND A PREOCCUPIED SHAKE)
IAN: Well, until tomorrow, Doug; Julie, Ms. Donovan...
IAN EXITS. EVE LETS OUT HER PENT-UP BREATH AND LAUNCHES AT JULIE.EVE: Julie... oh damnit, can't you just give me my job back? I mean, I didn't do any of those things on purpose, and you've gotta understand, I don't have any other choice... what I mean is, I need this job... (EVE SWALLOWS PAINFULLY) Just, please, one more chance...
JULIE: Eve, dear, I gave you several more chances. A more heartless boss would have fired you after that conference room fiasco...
EVE: But... that wasn't my...
JULIE: Fault. I know. None of it was, but I think you'd do far better in some other career... for someone else...
EVE STARTS TO PROTEST, BUT DOUG INTERRUPTS.DOUG: Which reminds me... Remember last time we talked, Eve...
EVE EYES HIM SULKILY.DOUG: (CONT'D) I mentioned an idea I had... Well part of it was this... I'm still in need of an assistant here at the club...
EVE: Really?
DOUG: Of course, it would be strictly probationary, but you do have experience working in a night club... Are you interested?
EVE: Work here... with all the memories...
DOUG: Of course, if you're not...
EVE: But it is something I know about... and it's certainly the best offer I've had all day. (EVE GLARES AT JULIE) I'll take it.
DOUG: Excellent... Come in tomorrow morning, say 10:00 a.m., and you, Ian and I can discuss who will be doing what...
EVE: Ian... that... gentleman who was just here?
DOUG: Yes, he'll be working at the club, too, probably in a number of capacities.
EVE: Well... how interesting. Ok, Doug, I'll see you tomorrow morning. You and Ian...
EVE SASHAYS OUT WITHOUT A WORD TO JULIE.JULIE: Doug, I'm amazed. Why ever would you hire Eve?
DOUG: In spite of her rocky career in business, sweetheart, I think she has potential. Believe it or not, she was the second best candidate I spoke to today...
JULIE: You're joking! That bad?
DOUG: Oh, Fair Lady... let me tell you about it...
OUT ON THE DOUG AND JULIE.
INTERROGATION ROOM, I.S.A. HEADQUARTERS, GENEVA. JOHN AND DANIELLE. IN PROGRESS.JOHN: (SURPRISED) I did all that? I changed your "outlook on life"?
DANIELLE: Yes. You were so good, so honest. I couldn't continue to steal and look you in the eyes. (BEAT) And I couldn't risk your finding out that I was Romulus. Not after I learned that you had been chasing me all over Europe.
JOHN: (SMILING) You were the one case I couldn't crack. Little did I know...
DANIELLE: But, in a way, you did solve the case. You rehabilitated me yourself, instead of catching me and turning me over to the authorities.
JOHN: Perhaps... I hadn't thought of it that way before.
DANIELLE: It's the truth. The times we spent together made me forget that I was ever Romulus. (BEAT) I remember the nights we spent in Paris...
JOHN: Yes, walking along the Seine.
DANIELLE: And the mornings...
JOHN: (SMILING) Jean-Luc's cafe around the corner.
DANIELLE: What about the time you took me to Holland...
JOHN: Ahhh, yes. The chocolate factory. I created a monster on that trip.
DANIELLE: I'm still a chocolate addict, you know. (BEAT) But I think the most wonderful time was in Venice. The night you took me out in that gondola...
JOHN: And asked you to marry me. I remember.
DANIELLE: I'm glad you remember those times.
JOHN: Me, too. I'm glad to have those memories back. (BEAT) So what happened? We were so happy together... what did Carly do to make you leave me?
DANIELLE: Oh, John... I never wanted to do that. (BEAT) It was late 1983. I contacted Katerina and told her that I wanted out, that I was through stealing for her. She insisted that I go to the Von Leuschner home to "discuss" it. She really wanted to coerce me into changing my mind.
JOHN: Did she?
DANIELLE: She... Yes. She gave me some of her own valuables...
JOHN: Like the locket that I found.
DANIELLE: Yes. She also said that she had been keeping a close watch over Mother. She asked me how I was planning to pay for keeping Mother in the hospital if I stopped being Romulus.
JOHN: And what did you tell her?
DANIELLE: I didn't have an answer. I gave in and agreed to do another job for her.
JOHN: And then you came back?
DANIELLE: Yes.
JOHN: What happened then?
DANIELLE: Then we were married, and I again decided to give up being Romulus.
JOHN: Again?
DANIELLE: Yes, but this time I was determined to follow through. Nothing was going to change my mind.
JOHN: What about your mother?
DANIELLE: I was going to tell you about her and ask for your help.
JOHN: But...
DANIELLE: I'll get to that. Anyway, do you remember the spring of 1984, when we went to that masquerade ball?
JOHN: Yes. That was the first thing I remembered about you.
DANIELLE: Well, we were there so I could finally sever all ties with Katerina. While we were there, I met her fiancé, James.
JOHN: Lawrence...
DANIELLE: Yes. It was obvious to me that he didn't know what kind of a woman Katerina really was, and I figured out how I would be rid of her. I told her that she couldn't buy me off any longer. I told her that I would no longer steal for her, and if she tried to change my mind, I would tell James everything.
JOHN: That was the night she ran away, wasn't it?
DANIELLE: Yes. I didn't know it at the time, but I found out later.
JOHN: Apparently, that was also the night she found out that "James" was really Lawrence Alamain. She led him to believe that she left because he had lied to her... But now, I wonder...
DANIELLE: Do you think it was my threat that drove her away?
JOHN: Perhaps. Perhaps she panicked at the thought of him finding out about her...
DANIELLE: Well, whatever the reason, she was gone, and I was happy. I thought that I had seen the last of her.
JOHN: But you hadn't...
DANIELLE: No. She returned in early 1985. She found me and demanded that I meet her. She said it would be dangerous for you if I refused, or if I mentioned anything about it to you.
JOHN: What happened?
DANIELLE: I went to meet her. It was terrible. I hardly recognized her when I saw her. She seemed to be in a tenuously controlled rage. I thought she had gone mad. She said that now the tables were turned. This time, she would be the one to tell all unless I did what she wanted.
JOHN: And that was...?
DANIELLE: She said that I had to leave you. She said that if I so much as said good-bye to you, she would tell you all the things that I had done for her, and that I was Romulus. So I left.
JOHN: Dani... Why didn't you come to me? I would have helped you...
DANIELLE: Would you? I saw how relentlessly you pursued Romulus, how much you wanted to put "him" away. Do you really think you would have helped me if you had found out that I was Romulus?
JOHN: I... I don't know.
DANIELLE: Well, I didn't want to take the chance. I was certain that I was going to lose you either way. I figured that if I just disappeared, there was a chance that you wouldn't hate me. So that's what I did.
JOHN: I looked for you, you know...
DANIELLE: I know. It tore me apart to have to hide from you, but I had no choice.
JOHN: I finally gave up looking. (BEAT) About that time, Katerina showed up.
DANIELLE: I know. Once I learned that she was with you, I figured out that she was after you all along. And I was powerless to do anything about it.
JOHN: I'm sorry...
DANIELLE: Don't be. How could you have known? I left you without a word of explanation. (HER EYES WELL WITH TEARS) I'm the one who's sorry, John. I'm sorry for all the pain I caused you. (BEAT) I never would have done it had I not been forced.
JOHN: I know, Dani. (BEAT) I know.
DANIELLE: (STANDING) I love you, John. I always have. (WALKING OVER TO HIM)
JOHN STANDS AND PUTS HIS ARMS AROUND HER. HOLD ON JOHN'S FACE.VIVIAN: And did you remember to pack your Gameboy?CUT TO: ALAMAIN FOYER. VIVIAN AND NICHOLAS ARE COMING DOWN THE STAIRS WITH NICHOLAS' SUITCASE. IVAN IS WAITING NEAR THE DOOR. NICHOLAS LOOKS SCARED, VIVIAN IS TRYING TO BE LIGHTHEARTED.
NICHOLAS: Yes, I've got it.
VIVIAN: Maybe when we get to Paris we'll look up Michel. Would you like that? I know he'd love to play chess with you again.
NICHOLAS: Ok.
THEY REACH THE BOTTOM OF THE STAIRS AND IVAN REACHES OUT TO TAKE THE SUITCASE FROM VIVIAN.IVAN: Are you and Nicholas ready, Madame?
VIVIAN: Yes, Ivan. What happens now.
IVAN: We will go to the pier. There we will meet a man who will provide us with passports. From there we will get on a boat.
NICHOLAS: Are we sailing to Paris, then?
IVAN: No, Master Nicholas. Although enjoyable, that would take far too long. We will go only a few miles up the river. Then we will go by car to O'Hare and fly to Paris.
NICHOLAS: Aunt Viv, I'm afraid.
VIVIAN: There's no need to be afraid, darling. I'm right here beside you. (SHE HOLDS OUT HER HAND) Here, hold my hand tightly. Ivan knows what he is doing. Everything will be fine once we get on that plane. Right Ivan?
IVAN: Oui, Madame. You'll see, Master Nicholas, we will be fine. But we must go now. We are expected at the pier.
VIVIAN: Yes, you're right. Nikki, go to the car with Ivan.
NICHOLAS AND IVAN EXIT, IVAN CARRYING THE SUITCASE. VIVIAN TAKES ONE LAST LOOK AROUND THE LIVING ROOM. SHE FINGERS A POT OF ORCHIDS, AND STARTS TO TAKE IT ALONG. SHE THINKS THE BETTER OF IT AND PUTS IT BACK. VIVIAN EXITS. HOLD ON THE ORCHIDS.JANET: We were just discussing the attack on Carrie Brady. How's she doing?CUT TO: JANET'S OFFICE, SALEM PD. JANET AND MORGAN ARE GOING OVER CASES, WHEN SPENCER KNOCKS. JANET GESTURES HIM IN, AND HE PULLS UP A CHAIR.
SPENCER: She's shook up, that's for sure, but she handled herself well. And she still wants to testify.
MORGAN: Carrie's a tough kid. She's been through a lot, but she's a fighter, sweet, but determined.
JANET: And she'll need every ounce of that determination, I'm afraid... Trials are an ugly business, especially for the victim.
SPENCER: Any leads on the attacker?
MORGAN: 'Fraid not. We have a couple of leads, but I'm not optimistic. Bartoli's little gang is slippery.
JANET: At least we've got Bartoli on the aggravated assault. That's something...
MORGAN: So, Spencer... any luck finding more eye-witnesses on the acid attack?
JANET: Yes, it did happen at a large party... there should be someone who saw it happen.
MORGAN: That, and the boyfriend, Austin... Austin Reed... Any luck finding him?
SPENCER: Well, we found Reed, but I'm afraid he won't be testifying...
JANET: Why not? Surely he wants to see this thug brought to justice?
SPENCER: I'm sure he'd want to... if he were still with us...
MORGAN: Is he...
SPENCER: He died in an accident.
JANET: What happened?
SPENCER: He was moving a piano, single-handedly. Unfortunately, he wasn't strong enough, and the piano slipped...
JANET: (PAINED) Oh...
SPENCER: Yep, it was gruesome. The piano flattened him.
MORGAN: (HALFWAY BETWEEN LAUGHTER AND DISGUST) How.... terrible... crushing...
MORGAN STARTS TO LAUGH, AND THEN SUPPRESSES IT WITH A CLEARING OF THE THROAT. JANET TAKES A SIP OF HER WATER, AND SPENCER WAITS FOR THEM TO SETTLE.SPENCER: So as it stands now, Carrie is our only witness. It's basically her word against Bartoli's.
MORGAN: But she knows he did it...
SPENCER: Yeah, but knowing who attacked you, and convincing a jury are two different things. I just hope she holds on to her determination on the witness stand...
OUT ON SPENCER'S CONCERN.
JENNIFER'S ROOM. JACK IS SITTING NEXT TO JENNIFER'S BED, ABIGAIL IN HIS LAP. IN PROGRESS.JACK: I had an enlightening talk with Kayla. She said she hoped we could be friends. I never thought I would hear that from her, what with our... past history. But I'm glad she thinks so. I want that, too.
ABIGAIL SQUIRMS IN JACK'S LAP, TRYING TO REACH A TEDDY BEAR ON JENNIFER'S BED. JACK HANDS THE BEAR TO ABIGAIL.JACK: (CONT'D) (TO ABIGAIL) Here... Abigail... (TO JENNIFER) And do you know what else Kayla said? That you were my source of strength. I never thought of myself as a very strong person before.
ABIGAIL HOLDS TEDDY UP TO JACK FOR A KISS. JACK ABSENTLY KISSES THE BEAR.JACK: (CONT'D) But I never thought I'd be kissing teddy bears, either. (BEAT) You know what? I think Kayla's right. With you and the child... Abigail... by my side I feel like the strongest person on earth. (HE TAKES JENNIFER'S HAND) Thank you. Your love and your belief in me keeps me going. (BEAT) But I'm selfish. I want more. I want you to wake up and be your wonderful self again. I want you to hear Abby call you "mommy" and I want to wipe away those happy tears I know you'll shed when she does.
ABIGAIL: Ma-ma!
JACK: (CONT'D) See? Abby agrees with me. Did I ever tell you that we have a very smart child? I miss you so much, Jennifer. We both miss you. Please come back to us. We love you.
ABIGAIL HOLDS THE TEDDY BEAR UP TO JACK AGAIN. HE PICKS HER UP AND HUGS HER, WITH THE TEDDY BETWEEN THEM. HOLD ON JACK AND ABIGAIL.SHANE: I saw the agent take Dani back to her holding area... You're done questioning her?CUT TO: I.S.A. HEADQUARTERS, CONFERENCE ROOM, GENEVA. JOHN IS SITTING ON THE TABLE, WHEN SHANE ENTERS.
JOHN: That I am.
SHANE: Excellent... I'm afraid we'll only be able to hold her here for another 36 hours... Brussels is anxiously awaiting her return...
JOHN: Damn... I wish there were something I could do...
SHANE: Remember, John, we have yet to see what Dani was really doing on her last Salem visit... Did she give you any new information this time 'round?
JOHN: Not really, she mainly confirmed everything I've already remembered... her description of Katerina's behavior fits with everything we've discovered about her.
SHANE: So you believe her?
JOHN: Everything she told me about our marriage was true... I remember it all. I can't see that she has any reason to lie to me now, Carly is dead, after all...
SHANE: But if she had something to do with Carly's death?
JOHN: I just can't believe that's the case, Shane. Man, I know this woman, as well as I know anything from my past, which is pretty well now. My gut tells me she's telling the truth, about everything. Even about not being Carly's killer.
SHANE: Well, whatever the truth, time will tell...
JOHN: Time, and those ballistics tests...
HOLD ON THE JOHN'S WORRY.NICHOLAS: Aunt Viv, I can't see...CUT TO: SALEM PIER. FOG HAS SETTLED IN. THE AIR IS THICK WITH MIST, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO SEE. IVAN IS LEADING NICHOLAS AND VIVIAN DOWN THE STAIRS ONTO THE PIER.
VIVIAN: It's all right, dear. Ivan and I will make sure nothing happens to you. Just watch your step, all right?
NICHOLAS: All right, I'll be careful.
VIVIAN: That's my little man...
BOTH IVAN AND VIVIAN ARE CONSTANTLY LOOKING AROUND. IVAN IS CAUTIOUS, VIVIAN IS VISIBLY NERVOUS. IVAN RAISES HIS HAND, AND THE THREE OF THEM STOP.IVAN: This is the place. We will wait here. My contact will bring us our passports and lead us to the boat.
VIVIAN: (IMPATIENTLY) Then where is he, Ivan? I thought you said he would be here.
IVAN: I said he would meet us here at approximately this time. I cannot predict the exact minute of his arrival.
IVAN LEANS CLOSE TO VIVIAN SO HE CAN WHISPER IN HER EAR.IVAN: (QUIETLY, SO NICHOLAS CANNOT HEAR) Please, madame, try to remain calm. Nicholas is already frightened. Seeing you upset will only make it worse for him.
VIVIAN: You're right, of course.
IVAN TURNS AND AGAIN TRIES TO PEER THROUGH THE MIST. THE SOUND OF FOOTSTEPS ECHOES FROM THE OTHER END OF THE PIER. AS THEY COME CLOSER, THE SILHOUETTE OF A MAN IN A TRENCH COAT BECOMES VISIBLE. HE STOPS SEVERAL FEET FROM IVAN.IVAN: (QUIETLY, STILL STRAINING TO SEE) Pierre! Pierre, is that you?
LAWRENCE: No. It's not Pierre.
VIVIAN'S EYES GROW WIDE WITH HORROR AS SHE RECOGNIZES THE VOICE. SHE KNEELS DOWN AND THROWS HER ARMS AROUND NICHOLAS, HOLDING HIM TIGHT AS SHE GAZES AT THE SILHOUETTE. IVAN IS SPEECHLESS. THE MAN WALKS TOWARD THEM.NICHOLAS: No...
LAWRENCE EMERGES FROM THE SHADOWS. HE STOPS IN FRONT OF VIVIAN, NICHOLAS AND IVAN.LAWRENCE: Good evening, Vivian.
HOLD ON LAWRENCE EVIL GRIN. FADE TO BLACK.
