TEASER

ALAMAIN LIVING ROOM/FOYER. LAWRENCE STORMS THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR.
LAWRENCE: They'll all pay.
LAWRENCE SLAMS SHUT THE DOOR, AND WALKS INTO THE LIVING ROOM. HE PICKS UP THE PHONE AND DIALS. ONE-WAY.
LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) Mr. Marchand? Lawrence Alamain. If you expect to remain my attorney, you'll explain to me why it took so bloody long to arrange bail. Really? No... I understand. (BEAT) You understand this... I'm going to find a new attorney, one who comprehends the law.
LAWRENCE SLAMS DOWN THE PHONE, POURS HIMSELF A DRINK, TAKES A DEEP BREATH AS IF TO CALM HIMSELF, THEN TURNS.
LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) Nikki! (HE WALKS TO THE STAIRCASE) Nikki, come down here, I need to talk to you.
THERE IS NO RESPONSE.
LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) Nicholas! Vivian! (BEAT) Ivan!
THE HOUSE IS SILENT. LAWRENCE WALKS BACK INTO THE LIVING ROOM AND PICKS UP THE PHONE. ONE-WAY.
LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) It's me. I am paying you very well to watch my Aunt's every move. Tell me, where the hell has she taken my son?
HOLD ON LAWRENCE'S OUTRAGE.

CUT TO: JOHN'S LOFT. JOHN IS WALKING DOWN THE STAIRS, FOLLOWED BY VIVIAN. SHE IS WEARING A BATHROBE AND HER HAIR IS WET.

JOHN: I'm sorry that the hot water ran out on you, Vivian, but it's an old building with a temperamental water heater.

VIVIAN: Why haven't you fixed it, if you knew something was wrong?

VIVIAN SITS ON THE COUCH, DRYING OFF HER HAIR WITH A TOWEL.
JOHN: (SHRUGS) I've never had to worry about having hot water for four people before.

VIVIAN: Then perhaps it's time you did.

JOHN: Look Vivian, need I remind you that you're guests here?

VIVIAN: And this is how you treat your guests?

JOHN: (TRYING TO REMAIN CALM) Not usually, no. But I've never had a guest as demanding as you.

VIVIAN: How dare you! You...

WE SEE IVAN, WHO STANDS IN THE KITCHEN AREA, PREPARING OMELETS.
IVAN: (HIS VOICE SLIGHTLY RAISED, INTERRUPTING VIVIAN) Madame... Perhaps you and Mr. Black would like something to eat?

VIVIAN: Not now, Ivan.

IVAN: Now is a perfect time, Madame. Need I remind you, we are relying on Mr. Black's largess? The least I can do is prepare a meal.

VIVIAN: (REALIZING HER ERROR) Of course... I had forgotten we were relying on the... kindness of strangers. John, I apologize for snapping at you. I'm not used to sharing such cramped quarters.

JOHN: (SIGHING) Neither am I. But I guess we'll all have to get used to it... for a little while, at least. And I'll call maintenance today about the water heater.

IVAN: Thank you, Mister Black, we are most grateful.

JOHN WALKS INTO THE KITCHEN AREA AND LOOKS AT THE FOOD.
IVAN: (CONT'D) Please, help yourself.

JOHN: Ivan, you didn't need to go to the trouble.

IVAN: It was no trouble at all. I found everything I needed in this... tiny kitchen. (BEAT) Would you like an omelet?

JOHN: No thanks, I'm not hungry. I'll just make myself some coffee.

IVAN: I already made the coffee. There is a fresh pot of Jamaican blend.

JOHN: (REACHING FOR A MUG) Hmm, not what I usually drink...

BRADY STARTS CRYING. JOHN PUTS DOWN HIS MUG.
JOHN: (CONT'D) His master's voice... If you will excuse me.
JOHN GOES UPSTAIRS AS IVAN BRINGS A PLATE OF FOOD TO VIVIAN.
IVAN: Madame, I hope you are hungry.

VIVIAN: Thank you, Ivan... for everything. I have to remember not to antagonize John. We are here under his protection.

IVAN: My pleasure, Madame. I know you would have stopped before you'd done irreparable harm, you just needed a reminder...

VIVIAN: Ivan, you are a treasure. (SHE TAKES A BITE OF THE OMELET) Hmmm... This is tasty. I didn't realize you were such a good chef.

IVAN: (SMILING) You are very kind. I am not as talented as Mr. Alamain's cook, but I enjoy myself in the kitchen.

JOHN WALKS DOWNSTAIRS, HOLDING BRADY. BRADY HAS STOPPED CRYING, BUT CONTINUES TO WHIMPER. NICHOLAS FOLLOWS JOHN AND BRADY DOWNSTAIRS.
NICHOLAS: (EXCITED) Hey, John, do you think we could go out and play some soccer or baseball?

JOHN: Not right now, Nikki. Maybe later this afternoon.

NICHOLAS RUNS OVER TO VIVIAN AND IVAN.
NICHOLAS: Aunt Viv, can I show you the newest thing I learned on my video game?

VIVIAN: Of course, darling. But, why don't you have something to eat first. Ivan made the most delicious omelet.

JOHN WALKS INTO THE KITCHEN AND OPENS THE FREEZER. HE PULLS OUT A COLD TEETHING RING AND GENTLY RUBS IT ON BRADY'S GUMS.
JOHN: Does that feel better, slugger?
THE PHONE RINGS, AND JOHN REACHES TO ANSWER IT. ONE-WAY.
JOHN: (CONT'D) Hello?... Oh, hi, Leigh... Yeah, yeah, I know I'm not in yet... Listen, I've got kind of a family crisis and I can't make it in today... I'm sorry, I'll see you tomorrow.
JOHN HANGS UP THE PHONE. IVAN IS CARRYING A PLATE OF FOOD FOR NICHOLAS, WHEN HE STEPS ON ONE OF BRADY'S TOYS AND TRIPS, DROPPING THE FOOD ON THE FLOOR. BRADY BEGINS TO CRY AGAIN. HOLD ON JOHN'S EXASPERATION.

CUT TO: JACK & JENNIFER'S LIVING ROOM. JENNIFER IS FEEDING ABIGAIL. THE FRONT DOOR OPENS AND JACK ENTERS, CARRYING TWO LARGE PAPER BAGS. JENNIFER TURNS, SURPRISED.

JENNIFER: Jack!

ABIGAIL: Dada!

JACK: (SMILING) Yes, that's right! Dada's home for lunch!

ABIGAIL SQUEALS WITH DELIGHT.
JENNIFER: What's in the bags?

JACK: Chinese. I hope that's okay...

JENNIFER: Okay, it's wonderful! I can't believe you did this.

JACK: O, ye of little faith! I can be as spontaneous as anyone else... as long as I can fit it into my schedule.

ROSIE ENTERS FROM THE KITCHEN.
ROSIE: Jennifer, I thought I heard... (SEEING JACK) Oh! Jack!

JACK: Good day, Rosie.

ROSIE: I'm surprised to see you home this time of day.

JACK SIGHS RESIGNEDLY.
JENNIFER: (PROUDLY) He brought me Chinese for lunch.
ABIGAIL, STILL IN JENNIFER'S ARMS, BEGINS TO NOD OFF. ROSIE IS THE FIRST TO NOTICE.
ROSIE: It looks like Abby's lunch is over.

JENNIFER: (SMILING) Yeah, it looks that way.

ROSIE: Why don't I take her upstairs and let you two have a private lunch?

JACK: Marvelous suggestion, Rosie.

ROSIE TAKES ABIGAIL FROM JENNIFER.
ROSIE: (TO ABIGAIL) I think it's time for your nap, sweetie.
AS ROSIE GOES TOWARD THE STAIRS, JACK STOPS HER.
JACK: (TO ABIGAIL) I'll be up to see you later.
HE KISSES ABIGAIL ON THE HEAD. ROSIE TAKES ABIGAIL UPSTAIRS. JACK TURNS TO JENNIFER, SMILING.
JACK: (CONT'D) Well, it's just the two of us, now. (HOLDING UP THE BAGS) Shall we?

JENNIFER: Sure.

JENNIFER SITS DOWN. JACK NOTICES THAT SHE NO LONGER LOOKS HAPPY.
JACK: (SITTING DOWN NEXT TO HER) Am I mistaken, or was there just a radical shift in the mood here?

JENNIFER: Come on, sit down.

JACK SITS DOWN CAUTIOUSLY AND SETS THE BAGS ON THE TABLE IN FRONT OF THEM. WITHOUT SPEAKING, JENNIFER STARTS TO TAKE THE FOOD OUT OF THE BAGS. JACK STOPS HER AND TAKES HER HANDS.
JACK: Jennifer, please. Tell me what's wrong. (BEAT) It's Carly, isn't it?

JENNIFER: (PULLING AWAY FROM JACK) Yes.

JACK: You know, lunch wasn't the real reason I came home. I could tell this morning that you were still upset. I wanted to see if you were doing any better this afternoon.

JENNIFER: I didn't want to show it in front of Abby, but... No, I'm not doing any better. (BEAT) I'm sorry, Jack. I don't mean to take this out on you. I know it's not your fault.

JACK: I know.

JENNIFER: I'm just so angry!

JACK: I understand. But, what good will it do to get angry at Carly now?

JENNIFER: I'm not talking about Carly.

JACK: Then who...

JENNIFER: I'm angry at myself!

JACK: Jennifer...

JENNIFER: How could I have been so blind? I feel like such an idiot for letting Carly use me like that for so long. She lied to me for years, and I never had a clue!

JACK: Don't be so hard on yourself. She deceived a lot of people. She was good at it.

JENNIFER: But I thought we were so close. I should have seen that something was wrong.

JACK: You saw what she wanted you to see. We all did.

JENNIFER: You didn't. You were always suspicious of her.

JACK: True. But, I'm suspicious of everybody.

JENNIFER: I feel like such a fool.

JACK: Don't. You know, if Carly hadn't been killed, I'm sure I never would have found out about her past. I had no reason to start looking until...

JENNIFER: Until I asked you to write a retrospective of her life.

JACK: See? I didn't have any reason to believe she was lying to all of us. Why would you?

JENNIFER: Jack, I know you're trying to make me feel better...

JACK: Am I succeeding?

JENNIFER: (SMILING SLIGHTLY, DESPITE HERSELF) Maybe. A little. (BEAT) Still, I think it's about time I made some changes.

JACK: (WARILY) What kind of changes?

JENNIFER: I've let myself be deceived too many times by too many people. That's going to stop.

JACK: What are you going to do?

JENNIFER: I'm going to get rid of my rose-colored glasses and start seeing the world clearly. I'm going to grow up.

JENNIFER LOOKS DETERMINED, AS JACK LOOKS AT HER WITH CONCERN. OUT ON JENNIFER'S RESOLVE.

ACT I

JOHN'S LOFT. JOHN IS FEEDING CEREAL TO BRADY. BRADY SEEMS TO BE WEARING MOST OF IT. IVAN IS IN THE KITCHEN, PUTTING AWAY THE DISHES.
IVAN: Mister Black, where shall I put the colander?

JOHN: First off, Ivan, if we're going to be roommates, I think the "Mister" angle is a little formal. As for the colander, I generally just hang it on the hook...

IVAN SPOTS THE APPROPRIATE HOOK.
JOHN: (CONT'D) Yeah, there.

IVAN: And the glasses?

JOHN: Cupboard over the...

BRADY SPITS A MOUTHFUL OF CEREAL OUT, HITTING JOHN IN THE FACE AND CHEST.
JOHN: (CONT'D) Brady! Now, slugger, I know you'd rather be eating Wheaties, but c'mon...
THERE IS A KNOCK ON THE DOOR.
JOHN: (CONT'D) (SOTTO VOCE) Oh, just what we need... more people... Ivan, glasses in the cupboard over the counter...
JOHN POINTS OUT THE CUPBOARD TO IVAN, AS HE PASSES THE KITCHEN TO GET THE DOOR. IVAN STOPS HIM ON THE WAY AND HANDS HIM A TOWEL TO WIPE OFF THE CEREAL. AS JOHN GETS THE CEREAL OFF HIS CHEST, IVAN OPENS THE DOOR. IT'S LEIGH.
IVAN: Madame? Who may I ask is calling?

JOHN: Ivan... She's a friend. (TO LEIGH) Please, come in...

LEIGH WALKS IN, AS IVAN STANDS ASIDE. JOHN IS GETTING THE LAST OF THE CEREAL OFF HIS FACE.
LEIGH: (TO JOHN) Well... I can see why work was out of the question today... babies and butlers...

JOHN: Ivan is a friend, Leigh, not a butler. But I'm having a difficult time convincing him of that... Leigh McCloud, allow me to introduce you to my friend, Ivan Marais... Ivan, Leigh...

IVAN: Ms. McCloud... a pleasure. May I bring you a beverage?

JOHN GROANS, AND ROLLS HIS EYES SKYWARD.
LEIGH: Umm, yes, actually, coffee would be nice, if you don't mind...

IVAN: Not at all. How do you take it?

LEIGH: Black, thanks. (TO JOHN) No pun intended...

IVAN GOES INTO THE KITCHEN TO GET COFFEE.
JOHN: I'm sure. What brings you forth from the bastion of the corporate entity?

LEIGH: A desperate need for your signature. I haven't quite got down the forgery yet.

JOHN: Good thing. Please, have a seat.

JOHN MOTIONS LEIGH TO SIT DOWN. IVAN WALKS UP AND SERVES HER COFFEE. JOHN PICKS UP BRADY, WIPES HIS FACE, AND SETTLES HIM IN THE CROOK OF HIS ARM. IVAN LEAVES THE ROOM AFTER LEIGH IS SETTLED WITH HER CUP.
LEIGH: I brought several consulting agreements for you to sign. Also, the hiring and stock option contracts for the two new managers in Operations, and our new VP of HR.

JOHN: When's the VP to start? Soon, I hope?

JOHN MAKES A FUNNY FACE AT BRADY, WHO GIGGLES. LEIGH LOOKS ON, AMUSED.
LEIGH: She gave her notice at ProTech when we sent the offer letter, so she can start as soon as you've signed off on the contract.
LEIGH OPENS HER BRIEFCASE AND EXTRACTS THE DOCUMENTS.
JOHN: I'm glad you brought this by. HR has been a nightmare lately, what with that harassment charge against our former VP...
LEIGH PLACES THE CONTRACTS ON THE TABLE IN FRONT OF JOHN, WHO PICKS THEM UP AND LOOKS THEM OVER. BRADY DROPS OFF TO SLEEP.
LEIGH: Your son is adorable. He must feel terribly safe, to go to sleep so quickly.

JOHN: Nah. He's just bored by the reading material. You don't mind that I go over these?

LEIGH: On the contrary, I'm pleased you want to have a look for yourself.

JOHN: I assume you've gone over these as well?

LEIGH: Of course.

JOHN: Well, given that, and the fact that everything looks fine to me...

JOHN PICKS UP A PEN, AND SIGNS THE CONTRACTS, HANDING THEM BACK TO LEIGH.
LEIGH: Wonderful. I hope it wasn't an inconvenience for me to have dropped by like this.

JOHN: Not at all...

VIVIAN COMES DOWN THE STAIRS, BUT HESITATES TO ENTER THE ROOM.
VIVIAN: John... I didn't know you had company... I'll go back up...

JOHN: No, Vivian, join us. This is someone you really should meet. Leigh McCloud... Vivian Alamain.

THE TWO WOMEN SHAKE HANDS.
VIVIAN: A pleasure, Ms. McCloud. I've heard so many good things about you... about the changes you've made at EcoSystems...

LEIGH: Leigh, please. I've heard a great deal about you as well. There are execs who still sing the praises of the merger you managed to pull off in '88.

VIVIAN: Just a matter of good luck and excellent contacts. And do call me Vivian... Leigh. John and I have been talking about business a great deal of late. I am impressed with what you've managed to accomplish in such a short time...

LEIGH: The organization was basically sound, thanks to your earlier efforts. All it took was some clean-up and a little reorganization...

HOLD ON THE TWO WOMEN'S MUTUAL ADMIRATION, AS JOHN LOOKS ON, INTRIGUED.

CUT TO: DONOVAN LIVING ROOM. SHANE IS TAKING FILES FROM HIS DESK AND PACKING THEM INTO HIS BRIEFCASE, WHEN EVE WALKS IN.

EVE: I was thinking, Dad... How does a walk sound? It's such glorious weather, and I have an hour before I have to be at Euterpe...

SHANE: Eve... a walk sounds lovely, but not now. We need to talk.

EVE: Why? What's wrong?

SHANE: I'm afraid I have to go back to Europe for a short time.

EVE: Europe?? But you said you'd stay...

SHANE: I know... But I'm doing some vital research, and I need to be able to access the I.S.A. files at will. That means going back to Headquarters, in Switzerland...

EVE: But Dad... you promised... you said you'd stay here, in Salem... with me... as long as I needed you...

SHANE: Eve...

EVE: You promised! You're breaking a promise... I counted on you being here...

SHANE: It won't be that bad, Eve. I'll be back before you know it...

EVE: I can't believe this. You'd rather go off and risk your life for strangers than stay here and help your own daughter...

SHANE: This is not for strangers, Eve. This case I'm working on... it's for people here in Salem... our friends, Eve, and our family...

EVE: I'm your family... the only real family you have...

SHANE: This is for your benefit, too. It will help everyone in Salem...

EVE: Then go ahead! See if I care! Go and save the world... I'll be fine. I've always been just fine on my own...

EVE TURNS AND STORMS OUT OF THE LIVING ROOM. SHANE SIGHS HEAVILY, AND MOVES TO GO AFTER HER, BUT STOPS WHEN HE HEARS THE FRONT DOOR SLAM. HOLD ON SHANE'S CONCERN.

CUT TO: DEVERAUX DAYCARE CENTER. ALICE AND MAGGIE ARE STRAIGHTENING UP THE ARTS AND CRAFTS SUPPLIES.

ALICE: Look at this crayon, Maggie. (HOLDS THE CRAYON UP FOR MAGGIE TO SEE) They didn't have fluorescent pink when my children were little.

MAGGIE: Alice, I don't think Mickey would have known what to do with fluorescent pink when he was little.

ALICE AND MAGGIE BOTH LAUGH. THE DOOR TO THE DAYCARE CENTER OPENS. JENNIFER COMES IN, PUSHING ABIGAIL'S STROLLER.
JENNIFER: Hi, Aunt Maggie. Grandma!

ALICE: Hello, darling. (TO ABIGAIL) Hello, Abigail Johanna. What are you two doing here?

JENNIFER: Jack brought me lunch at home, so afterwards I decided to drive back here with him to check on the Daycare Center.

ALICE: We're glad you did.

MAGGIE: You bet we are. (TO ABIGAIL) How's my gorgeous grandniece today?

ABIGAIL GIGGLES. MAGGIE PICKS HER UP FROM THE STROLLER.
JENNIFER: And I do have one other reason for being here.

ALICE: Which is?

JENNIFER: I wanted to wish my grandmother a happy anniversary. (JENNIFER GIVES ALICE A HUG)

ALICE: Thank you, dear. I've decided to celebrate that fact by giving myself the day off at the restaurant... the privilege of being the boss, you know.

MAGGIE: Some day off, Alice... you've been here for almost an hour.

ALICE CHUCKLES, BUT NOTICES THAT JENNIFER SEEMS DISTRACTED.
ALICE: Jennifer, what's wrong?

JENNIFER: It's about Carly. There's something you should know.

ALICE: (UNEASY) Yes...

JENNIFER: I'd asked Jack to write a story about her to let everyone know what a wonderful person she was, but... (HER VOICE TRAILS OFF)

MAGGIE: Jennifer?

JENNIFER: It was a lie.

MAGGIE: What was?

JENNIFER: Her whole life. Jack found out that she had deceived us all. She might not have even gone to medical school.

MAGGIE: (STUNNED) How could that be? She was such a wonderful doctor.

JENNIFER: I don't know... We were supposed to be best friends. I guess I never knew the real Carly...

ALICE: Don't feel bad, Jennifer. She had everyone fooled.

JENNIFER: What do you mean, she had everyone fooled?

ALICE: It wasn't until we all started working together... (HER VOICE TRAILS OFF AS SHE SEES JENNIFER'S REACTION)

JENNIFER: You knew about this, Grandma?

ALICE: Yes, I did. (BEAT) I've been working with Jack, the Carvers, John Black, and Captain Yamada on trying to figure out who would want Carly dead.

MAGGIE: Alice, why would you be involved?

ALICE: There had been some question about her medical school records a couple of years ago, but it hadn't been followed up until recently.

JENNIFER: Why didn't you tell me?

ALICE: I'm sorry, Jennifer, but Jack and I both felt that it was best. You were still recovering from the accident...

JENNIFER TAKES ABIGAIL FROM MAGGIE, AND HOLDS HER TIGHT.
JENNIFER: But I'm fine now. I've been fine for weeks. First my best friend turns out to not be who I thought she was, then Jack doesn't tell me what's going on... (BEAT) And even my own grandmother wasn't honest with me.
OUT ON JENNIFER'S FRUSTRATION.

ACT II

JOHN'S LOFT. JOHN AND VIVIAN ARE SITTING ON THE COUCH, DISCUSSING ALAMAIN BUSINESS. IN PROGRESS.
VIVIAN: The profit margin on Gant Industries isn't worth the headache of dealing with James Edwards. I'd stay away from it.

JOHN: That was my thought, too, but I wanted your opinion.

JOHN WRITES SOMETHING DOWN IN HIS NOTEBOOK. IVAN IS TRYING TO LOOK BUSY BY DUSTING OFF THE STAIRWAY RAILING.
VIVIAN: Anything else?

JOHN: I had a question about this endowment to... (FLIPPING THROUGH HIS NOTES) here it is... the Bern Philatelist Society.

VIVIAN: That was Leopold's doing. In memory of his wife... (BEAT) your mother.

IVAN IS NOW CLEANING AWAY THE ASHES ON THE HEARTH OF THE FIREPLACE.
JOHN: Oh. (BEAT) Well... (CLOSING THE NOTEBOOK) I think that's it for business today. Can I get you some tea, Vivian?

VIVIAN: Yes, that sounds wonderful.

IVAN: (SPRINTING ACROSS THE ROOM TO THE KITCHEN) I'll get it, Madame. And you, Mr. Black... how do you like your tea?

JOHN: (SIGHING IN SURRENDER) Two sugars, no lemon.

VIVIAN: You've got quite a find in Leigh, John. She could prove valuable to some of the other Alamain holdings.

JOHN: She does know what she's doing, doesn't she? But, I have to credit Victor for bringing her in...

SOMEONE POUNDS ON THE FRONT DOOR. JOHN GOES TO ANSWER IT.
JOHN: (CONT'D) (OPENING THE DOOR) Can I help...
JOHN IS SURPRISED TO SEE LAWRENCE.
LAWRENCE: (CUTTING HIM OFF) Where is Vivian?

JOHN: (BLOCKING THE DOOR) What if I told you she weren't here?

LAWRENCE: I'd know you were lying.

JOHN: Why don't you leave, Lawrence? Leave everyone in peace.

VIVIAN STANDS AND WALKS UP TO JOHN AND LAWRENCE.
VIVIAN: No, John, it's all right. I'll talk to him. Why don't you and Ivan let me speak to Lawrence in private for a few moments.

IVAN: Madame!

JOHN LOOKS AT VIVIAN, BUT SHE MOUTHS THE WORDS "DON'T WORRY" TO HIM.
JOHN: (GRUDGINGLY) Come on, Ivan... I think Brady's toy box needs dusting.
IVAN LEAVES THE KITCHEN CARRYING TWO CUPS OF TEA. HE STOPS TO GIVE VIVIAN HERS WHILE LAWRENCE STARES AT HIM. IVAN HANDS JOHN THE OTHER CUP, AND THE TWO MEN SLOWLY CLIMB THE STAIRS.

GO TO: THE TOP OF THE STAIRS.

IVAN: I am worried for Madame, Mr. Black. Mr. Alamain might hurt her.

JOHN: Vivian can take care of herself, Ivan. (SOTTO VOCE) I just hope that she and Lawrence aren't trying to pull something.

HOLD ON JOHN'S CONCERN.

CUT TO: EUTERPE. DAVE IS SETTING TABLES AS EVE STORMS IN, OBVIOUSLY IN A BAD MOOD. DAVE MAKES A HASTY RETREAT, AS EVE PICKS UP THE RESERVATION BOOK AND STARTS FLIPPING THROUGH THE PAGES. DOUG APPROACHES HER.

DOUG: Eve? I was just down in the wine cellar and noticed we seem to have a lot of Beaujolais '63.

EVE: Of course we have a lot of it, it was Nick's favorite. Don't think by changing the name of the club and redecorating that you can go ahead and get rid of everything Nick did around here.

DOUG BARELY CONTROLS HIS TEMPER AT EVE'S UNPROVOKED ATTACK.
DOUG: Well, none of the living paying customers are drinking it, so stop ordering it until we use what we've got.
EVE STARES STONILY AT DOUG, NOT SAYING A WORD.
DOUG: (CONT'D) Understand?
EVE BARELY NODS. DOUG STARTS TO SAY SOMETHING ELSE, BUT LEAVES THE ROOM INSTEAD, SHAKING HIS HEAD. EVE LOOKS AFTER HIM IN DISGUST.
EVE: I understand. I understand we'll keep ordering it even if I have to drink a case a night.
JASMIN, WEARING HER USUAL TIE-DYE, COMES UP TO THE HOSTESS DESK.
JASMIN: Eve, I've got to take Saturday night off, but...

EVE: Hold it right there, Miss Throwback to the Sixties. You can't take the night off whenever the mood strikes you! This is a business not a playground. What would happen if everyone up and took off? Huh? What then? You have got to be one of the most unprofessional, irresponsible, flaky people I have ever met!

JASMIN: Are you quite finished?

EVE: For the moment, yes. Now get back to work.

JASMIN: No, now you can let me finish. I have to take off Saturday night, but I've switched shifts with Ken. I'll work his Thursday next week and he'll take my Saturday this week. I do so like to be responsible about these things.

JASMIN TURNS ON HER HEEL AND WALKS BACK TOWARDS THE KITCHEN. EVE, SEETHING, SLAMS DOWN THE RESERVATION BOOK, BREAKING A NAIL IN THE PROCESS. HOLD ON EVE'S ANGER AND FRUSTRATION.

CUT TO: JOHN'S LOFT. VIVIAN IS STANDING NEXT TO THE COUCH. LAWRENCE IS JUST INSIDE THE DOORWAY.

VIVIAN: (WITH MOCK POLITENESS) Lawrence, do come in... Oh, I'm sorry. You've already done that.
WE SEE NICHOLAS AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS, LISTENING.
LAWRENCE: (LOOKING AROUND AS HE WALKS CLOSE TO VIVIAN) Interesting choice of accommodations, Vivian. I'd say your taste in living quarters has declined significantly.

VIVIAN: Not really. My taste in housemates has improved significantly.

VIVIAN SITS DOWN ON THE COUCH.
LAWRENCE: I'm not amused, Vivian. (BEAT) Have Ivan gather your things. You and Nikki are coming back to the house.

VIVIAN: Excuse me?

LAWRENCE: You heard me. I'm taking Nikki back home. For his sake, I'm allowing you to come, as well.

VIVIAN: (SARCASTICALLY) Oh, Lawrence, your generosity overwhelms me. It's very gracious of you to let me come back to the house so you can lock me in the attic again. What an opportunity...

LAWRENCE: I'm not joking, Vivian.

VIVIAN: Perhaps not. But, if you think I'm going to return to that house with you, or allow you to take Nikki, you are crazy.

LAWRENCE: This isn't open to discussion, Vivian. I am taking Nikki back with me, and if you try to stop me...

VIVIAN: What, Lawrence? Will you have me beaten this time? (BEAT) Don't bother threatening me. If you attempt to harm Nikki, or Ivan, or me, we'll add battery to the kidnapping charges against you. (BEAT) And, perhaps, I'll start remembering some of your other transgressions...

LAWRENCE: All right, Vivian, if you want to play it that way, fine. I'll file kidnapping charges against you.

VIVIAN: Kidnapping?

LAWRENCE: Yes. You took my son from me and kept him for eight years. I've been forgiving thus far, but if you continue to push me... I'll make you pay for stealing Nikki away from me.

THEY GLARE ANGRILY AT EACH OTHER.
VIVIAN: It seems we've reached a stalemate.

LAWRENCE: So it would seem. (BEAT) It's your move, Vivian. (MENACINGLY) I do hope you'll make the correct one.

VIVIAN: I think a compromise is in order.

LAWRENCE: I'm listening...

VIVIAN: For your part, you'll forget about pressing any charges against me...

LAWRENCE: And...?

VIVIAN: And Ivan, Nikki, and I will stay here with John.

LAWRENCE: Absolutely not!

VIVIAN: Let me finish!

LAWRENCE: Fine. What to I get out of this bargain?

VIVIAN: You'll have two less crimes to worry about. I'll drop the kidnapping charges against you, and Ivan will forget about the beating you gave him.

LAWRENCE PONDERS VIVIAN'S OFFER.
VIVIAN: (CONT'D) Well?

LAWRENCE: Not good enough, Vivian. (LOOKING AROUND) I don't want my son living in this kind of environment.

VIVIAN: That's too bad, because you're not going to get a better offer.

LAWRENCE: I don't think it's what's best for Nikki.

VIVIAN: You mean you don't like not being able to watch him like a hawk. (BEAT) Don't worry, Lawrence, we're not going to leave the country.

LAWRENCE: You tried before.

VIVIAN: Yes, but I realize now that that was a mistake. Besides, I didn't feel, at that time, that we had anywhere else to go.

LAWRENCE: Oh, and now John is your knight in shining armor?

VIVIAN: He's been kind and gracious, and I know he cares about Nikki. I think we'll be fine here, for the time being.

LAWRENCE: (SKEPTICALLY) Perhaps.

VIVIAN: I think you need the time for yourself. You have those burglary charges to defend yourself against...

LAWRENCE: Don't worry your pretty head about those charges, Auntie. They're a temporary inconvenience. Very temporary. (LONG BEAT) All right, Vivian, I agree to your plan. I'll allow Nikki to stay here... for now.

VIVIAN SMILES, RELIEVED.
LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) But as soon as I resolve these burglary charges, I'll be back... to take Nikki home.
NICHOLAS COMES RUNNING DOWN THE STAIRS AND INTO THE ROOM.
NICHOLAS: (UPSET) No, you won't! I won't go!

LAWRENCE: Nikki...

NICHOLAS: I won't go anywhere with you ever again!

HEARING THE COMMOTION, JOHN COMES SLOWLY DOWN THE STAIRS.
LAWRENCE: (PLEADING) Nikki, please. You don't mean those things...

NICHOLAS: Yes I do! I mean all of it! I'm glad Aunt Viv took me away! (BEAT) You're a bad man, and I never want to see you again!

CRYING, NICHOLAS RUNS TO VIVIAN AND THROWS HIS ARMS AROUND HER. SHE PULLS HIM TIGHT, TRYING TO COMFORT HIM. JOHN WALKS OVER AND STANDS NEXT TO LAWRENCE.
VIVIAN: (PATTING NICHOLAS ON THE BACK) There, there, Nikki. It's all right...

LAWRENCE: (VISIBLY HURT) Nikki...

JOHN: (GRASPING LAWRENCE'S ARM) Lawrence, I think it's time you left.

LAWRENCE: (PULLING AWAY FROM JOHN) I want to speak to my son...

JOHN: I don't think this is the right time. He's too upset.

LAWRENCE GLARES AT VIVIAN. THEN SOFTENS SLIGHTLY WHEN HE SEES HIS SOBBING SON.
LAWRENCE: All right, I'll leave... for now. (BEAT) This isn't finished, Vivian. (BEAT) Good-bye, Nikki.
LAWRENCE TURNS AND WALKS TOWARD THE DOOR. JOHN FOLLOWS AND OPENS THE DOOR. LAWRENCE PAUSES TO LOOK BACK AT NICHOLAS.
JOHN: Good-bye, Lawrence.
LAWRENCE TURNS TO JOHN AND THEY SHARE AN ANGRY GLANCE. LAWRENCE THEN TURNS AND EXITS. JOHN CLOSES THE DOOR BEHIND HIM AND LOOKS BACK AT VIVIAN. STILL HOLDING NICHOLAS, VIVIAN LOOKS AT JOHN. OUT ON VIVIAN'S CONCERN.

ACT III

JACK'S OFFICE. JACK IS SITTING AT HIS DESK. HE PUSHES THE INTERCOM BUTTON.
JACK: (SPEAKING INTO THE INTERCOM) Vern. Can you come in here?

VERN: (OVER THE INTERCOM) Right away, boss.

PICKING UP THE FILES ON CARLY.
JACK: Yes, I believe it's time.
VERN ENTERS JACK'S OFFICE.
VERN: What's up, Jack?

JACK: Vern, the time has arrived.

VERN: For what? Are we finally getting pay raises?

JACK: Very funny. No Vern, this is more important. It's finally time for the Manning mess to hit the papers.

VERN: You mean...?

JACK: Yes, I told Jennifer everything last night.

VERN: (SURPRISED) How'd she take it?

JACK: About as expected. She's obviously upset. But, I think she'll be okay once the shock wears off. (BEAT) So, I want to get this story moving. We've got enough information.

VERN: Okay, so what can I do?

JACK: I'm going to write this one myself. It's the one thing Jennifer wanted. But I need you to help organize all the facts.

VERN: I'll get right on it, boss.

JACK HANDS VERN THE FILE. VERN SALUTES AND WALKS OUT THE DOOR. JACK PICKS UP THE PHONE AND DIALS. ONE-WAY.
JACK: Hello, John. Jack Deveraux here... Yes... I'll make this brief... I wanted you to know I've made the decision to go ahead with the Carly Manning story... Yes, Jennifer knows. And I think Bo should be told the truth about his former fiance before he reads about it on the front page... I was hoping... You will. Good. Yes, thank you for taking care of that... I will, good-bye.
JACK HANGS UP THE PHONE, AND TURNS TO HIS COMPUTER.
JACK: (CONT'D) Here comes the story of the decade.
HOLD ON JACK, AS HE BEGINS TYPING.

CUT TO: KAYLA'S LIVING ROOM. KAYLA AND MARCUS ARE SETTING UP FOR STEPHANIE'S BIRTHDAY PARTY, WHICH HAD BEEN POSTPONED WHEN THE GUEST OF HONOR HAD THE FLU. MARCUS IS BLOWING UP BALLOONS, WHILE KAYLA IS ON THE PHONE, ONE-WAY.

KAYLA: I'm glad that Lily will be able to come after all, Mrs. Patterson. She and Stephanie always seem to have a lot of fun together... (KAYLA MOVES THE PHONE FROM HER RIGHT EAR TO HER LEFT) I'd say two hours. I don't want the kids to wear themselves out. Okay, Mrs. Patterson... See you tomorrow. Bye.
KAYLA HANGS UP THE PHONE, AND CHECKS OFF THE NAME LILY PATTERSON ON HER LIST.
KAYLA: (CONT'D) There... I've called the parents of Steffi's preschool friends, and everything is all set.

MARCUS: (STRUGGLING TO BLOW UP A PINK BALLOON, THEN LETS IT GO TO WATCH IT FLY ACROSS THE ROOM) (WINDED) Easy for you to say... you've had the simpler job.

MARCUS PLOPS DOWN ON THE COUCH, AND KAYLA SITS DOWN BESIDE HIM.
KAYLA: (LOOKING AT THE COLLECTION OF ABOUT TWENTY-FIVE BALLOONS THAT MARCUS HAS ALREADY BLOWN UP) This is great! I especially like the pink and white streamers over the doors...

MARCUS: (SMILING) Glad you approve.

KAYLA: I can't thank you enough for everything you've done, Marcus... I don't think I could have pulled this party together without you. (BEAT) And, I am happy that you'll be here to celebrate with us...

MARCUS: There's nowhere that I'd rather be. You and Stephanie are the most important people in the world to me.

MARCUS LEANS OVER TO KISS KAYLA, WHEN HIS PAGER GOES OFF. HOLD ON MARCUS FRUSTRATION AT THE INTERRUPTION.

CUT TO: JOHN'S LOFT/HALLWAY. JOHN IS HANGING UP THE PHONE AFTER TALKING TO JACK. VIVIAN IS ON THE COUCH, STILL TRYING TO CALM DOWN NICHOLAS AFTER LAWRENCE'S VISIT.

JOHN: Vivian, I need to go out for a bit; there's something I need to take care of.

VIVIAN: Be careful, John. Lawrence might try something, now that he knows Nikki and I are here.

NICHOLAS JUMPS UP AND GRABS ON TO JOHN.
NICHOLAS: Don't go, Uncle John! I don't want my Dad to hurt you.

JOHN: Don't worry, Nikki, your father isn't going to hurt me. I can take care of myself. (EXTRICATING HIMSELF FROM NICHOLAS' GRIP) But I'll be extra careful, okay?

NICHOLAS NODS IN AGREEMENT, AND SITS BACK DOWN BESIDE VIVIAN.
JOHN: (CONT'D) Vivian, you, Nikki and Ivan all should be careful, too. I want you to lock and bolt the door as soon as I leave. And make sure that you know who it is before you open the door.
JOHN STARTS TO HEAD UP THE STAIRS, BUT HE SUDDENLY TURNS BACK AROUND.
JOHN: (CONT'D) Vivian, I hate to ask, but... Will you and Ivan be able to watch over Brady until I get back? Caroline is working at the pub today...

VIVIAN: Of course, John. (BEAT) I'm very good with children.

VIVIAN LIGHTLY TOUSLES NICHOLAS' HAIR. NICHOLAS MANAGES A SLIGHT GRIN.
JOHN: I'll try not to be too long.
JOHN GRABS HIS COAT AND GOES TO THE DOOR. VIVIAN GETS UP FROM THE COUCH SO THAT SHE CAN CLOSE IT BEHIND HIM. JOHN OPENS THE DOOR AND WALKS OUT. VIVIAN SHUTS THE DOOR. JOHN STANDS OUTSIDE UNTIL HE HEARS ALL OF THE LOCKS HAVE BEEN DONE.
JOHN: (SOTTO VOCE) Now to find Bo...
OUT ON JOHN'S DETERMINATION.

ACT IV

BRADY PUB. SHAWN IS WIPING OFF THE BAR AND CAROLINE IS SETTING DOWN A TRAY OF GLASSES WHEN BO WALKS IN.
BO: Hi Ma, Pop! Where's that boy of mine?

CAROLINE: I haven't seen Shawn-D or Max all morning.

SHAWN: Last night Max said they were going to go over to Paul's, down the block, remember?. I heard them leave this morning. It's getting on lunch time, so they'll be running in any minute, I expect.

JUST THEN MAX COMES IN CARRYING TWO HOCKEY STICKS OVER HIS SHOULDER.
SHAWN: (CONT'D) See, what'd I tell ya?
BO LOOKS BEHIND MAX AND THEN GOES TO THE DOOR AND LOOKS OUT.
BO: Where's Shawn-D, Max? Is he still over at Paul's?

MAX: He didn't come with me.

SHAWN: What do you mean he didn't come with you? That's all you two could talk about last night.

BO: Did he decide to stay here and play?

MAX: When I went into his room this morning his bed was empty. I figured you came early and took him home.

BO: No... I haven't seen him since yesterday...

BO LOOKS AT CAROLINE AND SHAWN, THEN TURNS AND RACES UP THE STAIRS TOWARDS THE HOUSE. WE CAN HEAR HIM CALLING SHAWN-DOUGLAS' NAME.
CAROLINE: Max! Why didn't you come and tell us Shawn-Douglas wasn't in bed?

SHAWN: Yes, you should have checked with us first before you went on to Paul's.

MAX: I'm sorry... I...

BO COMES RACING BACK IN, BREATHING HEAVILY.
BO: He's not in the house, I've looked everywhere.

CAROLINE: Don't panic yet. I'll call Doug and Victor. Shawn-D might have gone over to see one of them.

MAX GOES UP TO BO.
MAX: I'm sorry, Bo. I should've said something earlier.

BO: It's not your fault, Max. You didn't know. My hours have been so crazy lately I can't even keep track of them myself.

BO BEGINS PACING BACK AND FORTH AROUND THE PUB, WATCHING CAROLINE AT THE PHONE. SUDDENLY HE STOPS, HORRIFIED.
SHAWN: What is it, lad?

BO: What if... What if the person who killed Carly has kidnapped Shawn-D?

HOLD ON BO'S HORROR.

CUT TO: HORTON LIVING ROOM. TOM, ALICE, DOUG, JULIE, MICKEY, MAGGIE, AND BILL STROLL INTO THE LIVING ROOM AFTER DINNER.

TOM: That was a delicious meal!

ALICE: Yes, it definitely was. Doug, sweetheart, thank you for arranging the meal.

DOUG: It was my pleasure. Hmm, maybe Euterpe should start a catering service?

MICKEY: Let me know if you need any testimonials.

BILL: My big brother and his stomach...

MICKEY: Hey, I am not the one...

MAGGIE: Not again... Before we start another war, why don't we open the presents?

EVERYONE SITS DOWN ON THE SOFAS, EXCEPT BILL, WHO LOOKS NOSTALGICALLY AT THE FAMILY PICTURES ON THE FIREPLACE MANTEL. MAGGIE HANDS A CARD TO TOM AND ALICE.
ALICE: (OPENING THE ENVELOPE) Oh, this is just lovely! Maggie, did you make this card yourself?
ALICE HANDS THE CARD TO TOM.
MICKEY: My lovely wife is too modest to say, but yes, she hand-painted the card.

TOM: (READING THE CARD) "To the most wonderful couple in the world. You're our inspiration. Happy Anniversary. Love, Mickey, Maggie, Melissa, and Sarah."

ALICE: How sweet!

TOM: What's this? Look at this, Alice!

TOM HANDS ALICE A PIECE OF PAPER THAT WAS ENCLOSED IN THE CARD.
ALICE: (SURPRISED) A night at the Miller's Bed and Breakfast in Holmes county! Why thank you!

MAGGIE: You're very welcome. I hope you enjoy yourselves. Mickey and I had the best time when we stayed there last fall.

JULIE GIVES DOUG A LOOK BEFORE HANDING A SMALL BOX TIED WITH RIBBON TO TOM AND ALICE.
JULIE: (LAUGHING) Maggie, I think we should've consulted each other before tonight. I certainly hope you don't think Doug and I are trying to one-up you two.
TOM OPENS THE CARD AND CHUCKLES.
TOM: Why, it's a weekend at the Colony Inn in Canada. Alice, we'd better start booking up our vacations schedules.
EVERYONE LAUGHS.
DOUG: The manager of the inn is an old buddy of mine. He promised to show you two a first-class time.

ALICE: That's wonderful. Thank you so much for thinking of us.

JULIE: Nothing but the best for my grandparents.

BILL WALKS OVER AND GIVES A LARGE ENVELOPE TO TOM AND ALICE. ALICE OPENS IT AND FINDS A BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPH OF A YOUNG GIRL.
BILL: This is Yukana. She's eight years old and lives in a small village in Somalia. I've sponsored her in your names. So many children are in serious need of the basic necessities that we take for granted...
ALICE SMILES AND PLACES A HAND OVER BILL'S.
ALICE: Darling, that was a generous thought. I'm happy to say that I have yet another grandchild to care for.
THE DOORBELL RINGS AND MAGGIE GETS UP TO ANSWER IT.
TOM: Son, I can imagine that many of the children in Bosnia are suffering as well. Perhaps we can do something to help them...

JULIE: Yes... the children... And the women who've become spoils of war...

ALICE: I know. Watching the Olympics and seeing the changes in Sarajevo... the graves...

BILL: Yes, the violence is horrifying. (BEAT) You know, maybe there is something we can do...

MAGGIE WALKS IN, FOLLOWED BY JENNIFER WHO IS HOLDING ABIGAIL.
JENNIFER: Sorry for being late... and Happy Anniversary grandma and grandpa!
JENNIFER WALKS OVER TO TOM AND KISSES HIM ON THE CHEEK. SHE THEN LEANS OVER AND GIVES ALICE A KISS AND HUG.
ALICE: Jennifer! I'm so happy that you and Abigail could make it!

JENNIFER: I know Abby's happy to see her great-grandparents!

JENNIFER PUTS ABIGAIL DOWN, AND KNEELS NEXT TO ALICE.
JENNIFER: (CONT') Grandma, I want to apologize for getting upset with you earlier.
MAGGIE AND JULIE LOOK AT EACH OTHER.
JULIE: Gentlemen, why don't you come help Maggie and I serve the coffee and dessert?

DOUG: But...

JULIE GENTLY NUDGES DOUG.
JULIE: Let's give Jennifer and Grandma a moment alone...

JENNIFER: (SMILING) Thanks, Julie.

DOUG, JULIE, BILL, MAGGIE AND MICKEY HEAD INTO THE KITCHEN. TOM REMAINS SEATED IN HIS CHAIR.
JENNIFER: (CONT'D) I am sorry, Grandma, I was upset about Carly...
ALICE MOVES HER HAND LIGHTLY OVER JENNIFER'S CHEEK.
ALICE: No need for apologies, Jennifer Rose. I hope you understand why I didn't tell you what I knew.

JENNIFER: You were trying to protect me, and I appreciate that. Carly's betrayal is a lot to deal with.

ALICE: Take your time, my dear. And promise me not to put the entire burden on yourself? Let Jack help you through it. He really wants to help you.

JENNIFER: I know, and I will.

MAGGIE WALKS BACK INTO THE LIVING ROOM CARRYING A LARGE CAKE COVERED WITH LIT CANDLES. DOUG, JULIE, MICKEY AND BILL FOLLOW CLOSE BEHIND. DOUG BEGINS SINGING "HAPPY ANNIVERSARY". EVERYONE JOINS IN. HOLD ON THE TOGETHERNESS.

CUT TO: KAYLA'S LIVING ROOM. MARCUS IS ON THE PHONE, ONE-WAY. IN PROGRESS.

MARCUS: I'll be right there.
MARCUS HANGS UP THE PHONE, THEN TURNS TO KAYLA.
MARCUS: (CONT'D) I have to go to the hospital. Mrs. Henderson tore some of her stitches, and she won't let anyone but me fix them. (BEAT) Once I get her taken care of, I'll be back. (GRINNING) Promise.

KAYLA: I'll hold you to that promise, Dr. Hunter.

KAYLA ESCORTS MARCUS TO THE DOOR. AS HE OPENS THE DOOR, MARCUS KISSES HER GENTLY ON THE CHEEK. MARCUS LEAVES, AND KAYLA CLOSES THE DOOR BEHIND HIM. AS SHE LOCKS THE DOOR, THE PHONE RINGS. TWO-WAY.
KAYLA: (CONT'D) Hello?

CAROLINE: (SOBBING) Kayla.

KAYLA: Ma, what's wrong?

CAROLINE: It's Shawn-Douglas. (BEAT) He's missing.

KAYLA: Oh, Ma... What happened?

CAROLINE: We don't know. We didn't realize he was gone until Max came home...

KAYLA: How long has Shawn-D been missing?

CAROLINE: Since sometime early this morning, we think.

KAYLA: Have you called the police? Wait, Bo is the police.

CAROLINE: Bo's gone to talk to Captain Yamada.

KAYLA: (CONCERNED) How is Bo? (BEAT) I remember how devastating it is when your child is missing.

CAROLINE: He's scared, honey. (BEAT) Terrified.

KAYLA: Is there anything I can do?

CAROLINE: No, Kayla, not right now. Maybe later...

KAYLA: Ma, if Shawn-Douglas ran away, maybe he would come here.

CAROLINE: He might, but I think he'd be there already.

KAYLA: Okay. I'll stay here until Steffi gets home from preschool. Then I'm coming over.

CAROLINE: Thank you, Kayla. I'll let you know the minute I hear anything. Right now I'm going to call Carrie. Maybe she has some idea where he could have gone.

KAYLA: Okay, Ma, see you soon. Hang in there.

CAROLINE: I will, for Bo's sake.

OUT ON CAROLINE.

ACT V

JANET'S OFFICE. JANET IS BUSY WORKING AT HER DESK WHEN THERE IS A KNOCK ON HER DOOR.
JANET: (WITHOUT LOOKING UP) Come in!
BO OPENS THE DOOR AND ENTERS QUICKLY. JANET LOOKS UP AND SEES BO'S FRANTIC EXPRESSION.
JANET: Is something wrong, Brady?

BO: I think my son has been kidnapped.

JANET: What?

BO: He's been missing since this morning and if the shooter's figured out...

JANET: Brady, slow down and start at the beginning.

BO: I just came from my folks' pub, where I was supposed to pick up my son.

JANET: And there was a ransom note?

BO: No, he wasn't there.

JANET: How do you know he isn't out with friends?

BO: He was supposed to be out with my kid brother, Max. But when Max came home, Max said he hadn't seen him all day.

JANET: Do you think he might've gone out to see a friend without asking permission? Kids do it all the time.

BO: Not Shawn-D. I've told him how I need to know where he is. Besides... since Carly... since the shooting, he doesn't like to be alone.

JANET: And he's not with one of his grandparents? Maybe your sister, Kayla...

BO: Nope, nobody knows where he is. Can you do me a favor, Captain, and check to see if there have been any missing children found in the last 12 hours.

JANET: Sure, I'll make some calls. Do you want me to put out an A.P.B. on your son?

BO: No, not yet. I should double-check with the family first. Maybe someone's seen him...

JANET: I'm sure they have...

BOB WALKS INTO JANET'S OFFICE, CARRYING A FILE.
BOB: Here's the file on the Jones case, Captain. (BOB HANDS THE FILE TO JANET, AND TURNS TO SEE BO'S EXPRESSION.) What's up, Brady?

BO: My son is missing...

BOB: (CONCERNED) Oh no! Hey, if there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

BO: Thanks, but I don't think I'll need to start using department resources just yet.

JANET: All right, but make sure you let us know if you can't locate him yourself. We help our own.

BOB: That's right. I'm on my way home now, but I'll take the scenic route and keep my eyes open for your boy.

BO: Hey, thanks, I really appreciate it. I...

JANET: (SEEING BO'S PAIN) Don't worry, I'm sure he'll be fine.

BO: He has to be. I don't know what I'd do if something happened to him.

HOLD ON BO'S DISTRESS.

CUT TO: HORTON LIVING ROOM. TOM, ALICE, MICKEY, MAGGIE, DOUG, JULIE, BILL, AND JENNIFER ARE EATING CAKE AND ICE CREAM. THE DOORBELL RINGS. JENNIFER STANDS UP.

JENNIFER: I'll get it. Hopefully, that's Jack.
JENNIFER GOES TO ANSWER THE DOOR.
ALICE: Jack certainly has been working hard.

JULIE: He certainly has. We never would have gotten the first issue of "Midsummer" published on time, if not for him.

JENNIFER AND JACK ENTER. JACK IS HOLDING SOMETHING BEHIND HIS BACK WITH BOTH HANDS.
TOM: Well, speak of the devil!

JACK: (TO JENNIFER) Uh-oh. What did I do now?

JENNIFER: Nothing, dearest husband, now hand them the present.

EVERYONE LAUGHS.
JACK: (CONT'D) Doctor Horton, Mrs. Horton, Happy Anniversary. I'm sorry I'm late...

TOM: That's all right, Jack. We understand how hectic work can be sometimes.

JACK: Thank you for understanding.

ALICE: Don't worry about it, dear. We're just glad that you could make it.

JACK: Yes, I am too. I can explain...

JENNIFER: Jack... the present.

JACK: Yes, dear.

EVERYONE CHUCKLES. FROM BEHIND HIS BACK, JACK PRODUCES A SMALL POTTED JADE PLANT AND HANDS IT TO ALICE.
JACK: (CONT'D) Happy Anniversary.

ALICE: Jack, Jennifer this is beautiful! Thank you!

JENNIFER: Our little jade plant has always been a special reminder to Jack and me of our relationship. We hope that this plant will be special for you, too.

TOM: It's a lovely gift, you two. Thank you.

JACK: There's one more thing.

ALICE: What's that?

JACK PULLS AN ENVELOPE OUT OF HIS BREAST POCKET.
JACK: Your card.
HE HANDS THE ENVELOPE TO ALICE, WHO OPENS IT. THE CARD IS COVERED WITH VARIOUS COLORED LINES AND SQUIGGLES, DONE IN CRAYON. ALICE READS THE CARD ALOUD.
ALICE: (READING) "Happy Anniversary to a couple who are an inspiration to lovers everywhere. May you have many more happy anniversaries. Love, Jennifer, Jack, and Abby."

JENNIFER: Abby did the majority of the artwork.

ALICE: Yes, I see. It's wonderful.

MAGGIE: Jack, would you like some cake and ice cream?

JACK: Yes, thank you.

JACK WALKS OVER AS MAGGIE SERVES UP A PIECE OF CAKE FOR HIM. THE DOORBELL RINGS AGAIN. BILL GETS UP.
BILL: I'll get it this time.
BILL GOES TO ANSWER THE DOOR.
ALICE: My, it's like Grand Central Station in here.

JULIE: Well, Grandma, what do you expect? When the most popular couple in Salem celebrates an anniversary, everyone in town wants to join in the celebration.

BILL ENTERS WITH CALLIOPE, WHO IS CARRYING TWO BAGS..
ALICE: Calliope! What a pleasant surprise.

CALLIOPE: I hope you don't mind my crashing your party.

TOM: Not at all. We're glad you came.

CALLIOPE: (PUTTING HER HAND TO HER CHEST) Mmmm... Devastatingly handsome and understanding. Whatta man!

CALLIOPE GOES OVER AND SITS NEXT TO TOM.
CALLIOPE: (CONT'D) (TO TOM) Are you sure I can't convince you to run away with me?

TOM: I'm sorry. It's tempting, but...

ALICE: But he's staying right here.

CALLIOPE: Well, if anyone deserves him more than me, I guess it's you, Mrs. Horton. (BEAT) Oh! (STANDING UP) The presents! Silly me...

CALLIOPE HANDS ONE BAG TO TOM AND ONE TO ALICE.
CALLIOPE: (CONT'D) Happy Anniversary, you two.
ALICE OPENS HER BAG. INSIDE IS A BERET AND TUNIC. THE TUNIC IS DECORATED WITH PLUMED PENS. AT THE SAME TIME, TOM OPENS HIS BAG. INSIDE IS AN APRON, WITH "THE BOSS" EMBROIDERED ON THE FRONT. EVERYONE IS SURPRISED. ALICE PUT THE BERET ON HER HEAD AND HOLDS THE TUNIC UP IN FRONT OF HER.
ALICE: Calliope, it's lovely. Thank you.

TOM: (HOLDING THE APRON UP IN FRONT OF HIM) I don't know what to say...

CALLIOPE: Wait a minute!

CALLIOPE SNATCHES THE APRON OUT OF TOM'S HANDS AND THE TUNIC OUT OF ALICE'S HANDS. SHE HANDS THE TUNIC TO TOM AND THE APRON TO ALICE. SHE TAKES THE BERET OFF ALICE'S HEAD AND PUTS IT ON TOM.
CALLIOPE: (CONT'D) There! Much better.
EVERYONE LAUGHS.
CALLIOPE: (CONT'D) You can trade if you really want to...
CALLIOPE SHRUGS IN EMBARRASSMENT. EVERYONE CONTINUES TO LAUGH AT HER ANTICS. HOLD ON CALLIOPE'S SHEEPISH GRIN.

CUT TO: BRADY PUB. CAROLINE IS ON THE PHONE AT THE BAR, WHILE SHAWN TALKS ON THE PAY PHONE. CARRIE ENTERS THE PUB AND WALKS UP TO THE BAR WHERE CAROLINE IS ENDING HER PHONE CONVERSATION.

CAROLINE: (ON THE PHONE) Thank you, anyway. If you see him, please call us right away.
CAROLINE HANGS UP THE PHONE.
CARRIE: Hi Grandma. I take it, nobody's found Shawn-D yet.

CAROLINE: No, I'm afraid not. I've been calling everybody I can think of, and nobody's seen him. I haven't been able to reach Doug or Julie, and Victor hasn't seen or heard from Shawn-D either.

SHAWN HANGS UP THE PAY PHONE AND WALKS UP TO CAROLINE AND CARRIE.
SHAWN: (TO CARRIE) Hi darlin'. Thanks for coming by.

CARRIE: I came as soon as I heard.

CAROLINE: Any news, Shawn?

SHAWN: I called all the neighbors and nearby shop owners I could think of and nobody's seen the boy.

CAROLINE: Let's hope that Bo's found him already.

VICTOR, ACCOMPANIED BY NICO ENTERS THE PUB. SHAWN IMMEDIATELY TENSES.
VICTOR: Is there any word on Shawn-Douglas' whereabouts?

CAROLINE: No, and I'm afraid we're running out of places he could've gone.

VICTOR: In that case, I can arrange to hire a private investigator and offer a generous reward for Shawn-Douglas' safe return.

SHAWN ANGRILY SLAMS HIS FIST DOWN ON THE BAR AND APPROACHES VICTOR.
SHAWN: Victor Kiriakis, we'll be needin' no help from the likes of you! The family can take care of their own, I tell you!
NICO ATTEMPTS TO INTERVENE, BUT VICTOR STOPS HIM.
VICTOR: It's alright, Nico. I can handle this myself.

NICO: As you wish, sir.

VICTOR: (TO SHAWN) Listen to me. Shawn-Douglas is my grandson, too, and I am going to do everything within my power to ensure his safety.

SHAWN: Not if I have anything to say about it.

VICTOR: We'll see about that.

CAROLINE: Stop it, both of you! Can we please keep the peace, for both of your grandson's sake?

VICTOR: I'm sorry, Caroline. I was only trying to help.

CAROLINE: I know, Victor. And if we need to hire somebody, we'll definitely consult you.

SHAWN: But...

CAROLINE: Shawn, please!

SHAWN: (GRUDGINGLY) Fine, for the sake of my grandson, I'll comply. But, that's the only reason.

OUT ON SHAWN.

ACT VI

APARTMENT ABOVE EUTERPE. THE DOOR OPENS AND EVE ENTERS. JULIE HAS REDECORATED THE APARTMENT LIKE AN ENGLISH COTTAGE, WITH FLORALS AND SOFT PASTELS. BUT TO EVE, IT IS STILL NICK'S APARTMENT. WITHOUT TURNING ON THE LIGHT OR CLOSING THE DOOR BEHIND HER, SHE WALKS OVER TO THE SOFA AND SITS DOWN.
EVE: Hi, Nick... it's me again. (BEAT) I know I said I was going to try to get on with my life, but... things are starting to fall apart.
SHE PAUSES AND SIGHS HEAVILY.
EVE: (CONT'D) My dad is leaving again. He's going to Switzerland. (BEAT) He told me he would stay as long as I needed him, and I believed him. I really believed that he was going to be there for me.
SHE STANDS UP AND BEGINS TO PACE.
EVE: (CONT'D) I was starting to feel like part of a family, you know? (BEAT) Even though Andrew and Jeannie are in L.A., and Gabrielle is in New York, Dad made me feel like I wasn't alone. He made me feel like there was someone who cared about me. (BEAT) I thought my life was starting to turn around.
SHE PAUSES AND LOOKS DOWN AT THE GROUND.
EVE: (CONT'D) I can't believe I was that stupid.
SHE BEGINS WALKING SLOWLY BACK TOWARD THE SOFA.
EVE: (CONT'D) He says it's because of work. He says he's working on something to help everyone in Salem. I don't know. Maybe he's had it with me. Maybe I've driven him away.
SHE REACHES THE SOFA AND SITS BACK DOWN.
EVE: (CONT'D) I wish I could figure out what I did wrong. What I always do wrong.
SHE LOOKS HEAVENWARD.
EVE: (CONT'D) Can you tell me, Nick? You left me, just like Dad's doing now. What did I do that was so wrong? What did I do to make you want to leave?
SHE LOOKS DOWN AT THE FLOOR.
EVE: (CONT'D) It has to be me. It has to be something I said, or something I did. Everyone I care about leaves, eventually. (BEAT) They leave, and I'm left alone.
TEARS BEGIN TO FALL DOWN HER CHEEKS.
EVE: (CONT'D) I hate it! I hate that I'm all alone in the world.
SUDDENLY, EVE HEARS IAN'S VOICE BEHIND HER.
IAN: You're not completely alone, Eve.
SURPRISED, EVE SPINS AROUND. SHE SEES IAN STANDING IN THE DOORWAY, LEANING AGAINST THE DOORJAMB WITH HIS ARMS CROSSED. HOLD ON EVE'S SURPRISE.

CUT TO: HORTON LIVING ROOM/FRONT PORCH. THE PARTY SEEMS TO BE WINDING DOWN. THE COFFEE TABLE IS LITTERED WITH THE REMAINS OF A CAKE AND DIRTY DISHES. ALICE, TOM, MICKEY, MAGGIE, DOUG, JULIE, BILL, CALLIOPE, AND JENNIFER ARE SIPPING COFFEE. ABIGAIL IS NAPPING IN JACK'S ARMS. IN PROGRESS.

JENNIFER: And then Abby walked up and said, "Mama, chocolate."
EVERYONE LAUGHS AT WHAT IS OBVIOUSLY THE PUNCH-LINE TO A STORY ABOUT ABIGAIL.
BILL: Yes, that's my granddaughter. She takes after her mother.

JACK: Ohhh... this sounds good. Tell me more.

JENNIFER: Dad...

ALICE: Don't worry, Jennifer, if your father gets out of hand, I'll start telling embarrassing stories about his childhood.

BILL: Mom, you wouldn't.

ALICE: I would.

MICKEY: She will little brother, better surrender.

BILL: Boy... a fellow tries to tell one little story.

ALICE: All right, boys, this may be time for bed.

BILL: (LOOKING AT HIS SLEEPING GRANDDAUGHTER) Abigail, you should wake up and observe this. No matter how old you get, your mother will still treat you like her baby.

ALICE: (GETTING UP AND PATTING BILL'S CHEEK) That's because you are still my baby...

BILL: Mom...

CALLIOPE: I think it's sweet, Mrs. Horton. If you'd care to adopt me...

ALICE: And have you near Tom all day long? I don't know...

ALICE BEGINS TO PICK UP PLATES, WHEN THE PHONE RINGS. ALICE ANSWERS IT.
ALICE: (CONT'D) For you, Doug...
DOUG GETS UP TO ANSWER THE PHONE, BUT WE DON'T HEAR HIS CONVERSATION. ALICE RETURNS TO PICK UP THE PLATES.
MAGGIE: Let me help you with these dishes, Alice.

ALICE: Thank you, dear.

JENNIFER: I'll bring in the cake.

THE THREE LADIES DEPART TO THE KITCHEN. DOUG HANGS UP THE PHONE AND COMES BACK TO THE GROUP, OBVIOUSLY WORRIED.
JULIE: Darling, what is it?

DOUG: That was Caroline on the phone. Apparently she's been trying to reach me all day. She wanted to know if Shawn-Douglas was here with us.

ALICE, MAGGIE AND JENNIFER RETURN FROM THE KITCHEN.
JULIE: Shawn-Douglas? What's happened?

DOUG: I'm not sure exactly. They thought he was with Max at a friend's house, but Max said his bed was empty this morning. No one knows for sure how long he's been gone.

ALICE: Oh dear. They must be frantic with worry.

DOUG: I'm sorry to put a damper on the celebration, but Julie and I will have to leave. I said we'd go over and help.

JULIE: Of course we will.

TOM: Call us as soon as you hear anything.

JACK: (HUGGING ABIGAIL) And let us know if they need extra help.

CALLIOPE: It will be all right. You'll find him. I have good vibes about it.

DOUG: Thank you, everyone.

JULIE: We'll call as soon as we have any more information.

DOUG AND JULIE GO OUT THE FRONT DOOR.
ALICE: Oh, Tom, let's pray Shawn-Douglas is home soon...

GO TO: DOUG AND JULIE ON THE FRONT PORCH.

JULIE: Doug, this just can't be happening. Where could that dear little boy be?

DOUG: It's a parent's worst nightmare. I've already lost Hope, I can't lose Shawn-Douglas, too.

HOLD ON DOUG AND JULIE'S WORRY.

CUT TO: BRADY PUB. SHAWN AND CARRIE ARE AT THE BAR. SHAWN IS NERVOUSLY POLISHING IT, WHILE CARRIE SITS AND WATCHES QUIETLY. SHE HAS OBVIOUSLY BEEN CRYING. VICTOR SITS IN ONE OF THE CORNER BOOTHS, AN UNTOUCHED CUP OF COFFEE IN FRONT OF HIM. NICO IS NEARBY. THE PHONE RINGS AND THEY ALL JUMP. CAROLINE ANSWERS, IT IS BO, TWO-WAY.

CAROLINE: Brady Pub...

BO: Ma? It's me.

CAROLINE: Thank heavens, have you found him?

BO: No. He's not here at the boat either. What's the word from there?

CAROLINE: I've checked with both Victor and Doug, they haven't seen him. Victor is here and Doug and Julie are on their way over.

BO: What about the neighbors?

CAROLINE: Your father called all of them, no one remembers seeing Shawn-Douglas today. And Carrie and Max went around to the park and the playgrounds.

BO: All right, Ma. I'm think I should call Captain Yamada and get the police involved. I'll call you back.

CAROLINE: All right, dear. We'll be waiting.

CAROLINE HANGS UP THE PHONE AND WALKS OVER TO SHAWN.
SHAWN: Any word?

CAROLINE: None, he's getting the police involved now.

SHAWN BEGINS POLISHING THE BAR WITH INCREASED VIGOR.
SHAWN: Don't you worry, darlin'. He'll be fine... he's gotta be fine... That little guy's strong... He'll be fine... (IT IS NEARLY AN INCANTATION)
CAROLINE PATS SHAWN'S ARM, THEN QUIETLY GOES OVER TO VICTOR'S TABLE.
VICTOR: (HOPEFUL) Caroline. Shawn-Douglas was at the boat, wasn't he?

CAROLINE: No, I'm afraid not. Bo is going to call the police now. Perhaps ... perhaps that private investigator would be a good idea after all. (LOOKING OVER HER SHOULDER AT SHAWN) As long as Shawn and Bo don't know about it.

VICTOR: I understand. I'll go and place the call right now.

VICTOR GOES TO USE THE PAY PHONE AND CAROLINE GOES OVER TO SIT NEXT TO CARRIE, PUTTING AN ARM AROUND HER. DOUG AND JULIE COME IN AND RUSH OVER TO THE BAR.
DOUG: We came as fast as we could.

JULIE: Is there any news?

CAROLINE: No, I just talked to Bo and no luck at the boat. He's calling the police right now.

CARRIE BURSTS INTO TEARS AND CAROLINE TRIES TO COMFORT HER. SHAWN AND DOUG RETREAT TO A CORNER. NICO SEES AN OPPORTUNITY TO COME UP AND SPEAK TO JULIE.
NICO: (TOUCHING HER SHOULDER) Guiliana, I am so sorry for this trouble. I hope all will be well soon.

JULIE: Thank you, Nico. I hope so, too.

GO TO: SHAWN AND DOUG.

DOUG: What's the deal with Victor, Shawn? Why is he here?

SHAWN: Technically he's the boy's grandfather as well. I'm only tolerating him for Shawn-Douglas' sake.

DOUG GLANCES OVER AT NICO TALKING TO JULIE AND FROWNS.
DOUG: You're right, of course, we can tolerate anything if it will help Shawn-Douglas. Isn't that right, Shawn?

SHAWN: Yes, it is, Douglas.

THE TWO MEN SHAKE HANDS. OUT ON DOUG AND SHAWN.

ACT VII

BO'S BOAT / EXTERIOR. BO IS LOCKING THE CABIN DOOR WHEN JOHN COMES ABOARD.
JOHN: Bo! Glad I caught you! I was here earlier, but you were gone, so I went to the station to check with the duty officer, and they told me about Shawn-Douglas. Any word?

BO: No, nothing! I keep coming back here, hoping he'll turn up, but nothing.

JOHN: And he's not with Victor? Or Doug?

BO: No. They're all at the Pub, which is where I'm headed now. Gotta organize a search, see if there are any signs of a struggle...

JOHN: A struggle? Do you think he was kidnapped?

BO: Well, my son is missing, and Lawrence is out on bail. You do the math.

JOHN: Hmmm... Well, I'm not sure I'd put it past ol' Larry to do this, but I wonder... he's got plenty of other things on his mind right now.

BO: More than covering his tracks on Carly's murder?

JOHN: You've got a point. He did pay me a visit earlier... and it wasn't a social call... he's not amused that Vivian, Nikki and Ivan are with me...

BO: Well, I'm glad your family is safe; my top priority is finding Shawn-D. You want to come back to the Pub with me? We could use the help...

JOHN: Of course, and I would, but I think I have a better way to help out. I'm going to head over to Lawrence's. If he knows anything about this, I swear to you, I'll find out.

BO: I appreciate it, John. I can't tell you how much...

JOHN: No need, Bo, I understand.

JOHN PUTS HIS HAND ON BO'S SHOULDER, AND THEN THE TWO MEN HUG BRIEFLY.
JOHN: (CONT'D) You go see about finding your son, and I'll be by the Pub when I'm done with Larry.

BO: Thanks. Um... did you come by earlier for something specific?

JOHN: Yeah, but it can wait. There is something I need to talk to you about, something important... but right now, the most important thing is finding your boy...

HOLD ON JOHN'S WORRY.

CUT TO: APARTMENT ABOVE EUTERPE. IAN AND EVE. IN PROGRESS.

EVE: Ian! How long have you been standing there?

IAN: Long enough...

EVE: I suppose you heard... heard... damn you, Ian, you should have let me know you were there... I was...

IAN: Being real. something I found quite refreshing, regardless of the topic.

EVE: But you were eavesdropping!

IAN: Pun intended? Seriously, hon, I was only doing it because I was worried about you. You always run up here when you're upset and I wanted to make sure you were okay. I care about you, you know...

EVE: You couldn't possibly...

IAN: I do. Whether you choose to believe it or not, I am your friend.

EVE: I don't have any friends, Ian. Or I don't have them for long, once they find out...

IAN: Find out what?

EVE: About me. My whole story, what my life's been like. And you'll be the same. If I told you... if I told you what I was like, what I used to do, who I used to be... you'd stop being my friend pretty quick.

IAN: Why don't you try me? Let's start here. In this apartment. Why do you come up here so often?

EVE: This apartment was one of the few places I was happy. And I was happy here... with Nick.

IAN: Nick? The Nick who owned "Wings"?

EVE: That's the one. I met Nick when I was on the street. I was... well, let's just say life wasn't easy for me. Nick took me in, he helped me... after a fashion.

IAN: When was this?

EVE: Back when I first came to Salem. I was young. Nick wasn't. (SHE LOOKS AT IAN FOR A REACTION. SEEING NONE, SHE CONTINUES) But age didn't matter. Nick was all I had. He took care of me when the world was against me, he supported me... he loved me.

IAN: And you loved him?

EVE: More than I've ever loved anyone. He wasn't a saint, but then, neither was I. But he always cared about me, no matter how nasty I was to him. And I was plenty nasty sometimes. At the end... I don't know what happened. It got so confusing... and then, he was dead. And I never.... (SHE BEGINS TO BREAK DOWN) I never told him...

EVE BEGINS TO CRY, THEN SOB. IAN TAKES HER IN HIS ARMS AND HOLDS HER.
IAN: I'm sorry, Eve. Sorry it was so bad, and sorry it still hurts so much...
HOLD ON IAN, COMFORTING A SOBBING EVE.

CUT TO: ALAMAIN FOYER. THE DOORBELL RINGS. LAWRENCE ENTERS FROM THE LIVING ROOM.

LAWRENCE: I'm going to have to hire a new butler. This is getting very tiring...
LAWRENCE REACHES THE DOOR AND OPENS IT. JOHN IS STANDING THERE. LAWRENCE TRIES TO QUICKLY SLAM THE DOOR, BUT JOHN PUTS OUT HIS HAND AND FORCES THE DOOR OPEN. HE ENTERS.
JOHN: Come on, Lawrence. It's not polite to slam the door in someone's face, especially when that someone so graciously opened his home to you earlier today.

LAWRENCE: Get out! I'll call the police!

JOHN: Go ahead, if you want. I'm sure Bo wouldn't mind questioning you down at headquarters.

LAWRENCE: Questioning me? What the hell are you talking about?

JOHN: Considering your current standing with the police, being out on bail and all, I thought I'd question you informally. But, if you want to go downtown again...

LAWRENCE: I don't have time to play games with you, John. Just tell me what you want.

JOHN: Fine. (BEAT) Shawn-Douglas Brady is missing.

LAWRENCE: That's a shame.

JOHN: Yes, it is. The whole family is sick with worry.

LAWRENCE: That's unfortunate. What does that have to do with me?

JOHN: That's what I'm here to find out.

LAWRENCE: What do you mean?

JOHN: I mean, I want to know if you know anything about Shawn-D's disappearance.

LAWRENCE: If I...? You can't be serious!

JOHN: I'm dead serious.

LAWRENCE: You're unbelievable.

JOHN: Give me an answer, Lawrence. What do you know?

LAWRENCE: Absolutely nothing. (BEAT) I'm sure Vivian has told you the whole story, but let me remind you of one little detail: I've been incarcerated for the past two days! How could I have had anything to do with the boy's disappearance when I was sitting in a cell?

JOHN: We both know you have ways of getting things done, even from a jail cell.

LAWRENCE: And you think I somehow engineered this whole affair?

JOHN: I think it's a definite possibility.

LAWRENCE: Well, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I had nothing to with Shawn-Douglas' disappearance. That's the truth.

JOHN: "The truth." (BEAT) Somehow, it just doesn't fit, those words coming from your mouth.

LAWRENCE: I don't have to listen to this. You got the answer to your question, so get out.

JOHN STEPS CLOSER TO LAWRENCE AND GETS RIGHT IN HIS FACE.
JOHN: For your sake, I hope you're telling the truth... This time.

LAWRENCE: For my sake? Is that some kind of a threat?

JOHN: I don't waste my time making threats. Here's a promise: If anything happens to Shawn-Douglas, and I find out that you were even marginally responsible, I'll make damn sure that you pay, and pay dearly.

HOLD ON JOHN'S THREAT. AND OUT. FADE TO BLACK.
