TEASER

SALEM CEMETERY. WE SEE HOPE'S TOMBSTONE. BO, HAGGARD AND DISHEVELED, WALKS UP. HE LOOKS AT THE TOMBSTONE, THEN KNEELS, LIGHTLY RUNNING HIS FINGERS OVER HOPE'S NAME.
BO: Fancy Face... I wish you here. I need you... (DEEP BREATH) I feel so alone... so helpless. Our son is missing and I don't know how to find him.
BO BOWS HIS HEAD.
BO: (CONT'D) And I have to find him. I couldn't bear to lose him, too.
BO RESTS AN ARM ON HOPE'S HEADSTONE.
BO: (CONT'D) What if there was something I could've done to prevent this?
BO'S EYES WELL WITH TEARS.
BO: (CONT'D) What if my own grief over losing you... and Carly... made me tune out my own son?
BO WIPES AWAY HIS TEARS.
BO: (CONT'D) Hope... I know that mothers have a special bond with their children... Help me... help me find our son... Help me...
BO BEGINS TO CRUMBLE, AS HE BOWS HIS HEAD AND SOBS INTO HIS HANDS. HOLD ON BO, KNEELING NEXT TO HOPE'S GRAVE.

CUT TO: PIER. A GROUP OF DOCK WORKERS ARE SITTING ON THE BENCHES EATING BREAKFAST AND TALKING. WE SEE SHAWN-DOUGLAS HUDDLED UNDER THE PIER, SILENTLY WATCHING AND LISTENING. HIS FACE IS STREAKED WITH DIRT AND HIS CLOTHES ARE GRIMY. A WHISTLE SOUNDS AND THE DOCK WORKERS GROAN AS THEY GET UP TO BEGIN THE DAY'S WORK. IN THEIR HURRY THEY LEAVE BEHIND A HALF-EATEN BAGEL WITH LOX AND CREAM CHEESE, AN EGG MCMUFFIN AND SEVERAL CUPS AND CARTONS. AFTER THE MEN HAVE GONE, SHAWN-DOUGLAS CAUTIOUSLY LOOKS BOTH WAYS BEFORE COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE DOCKS. TWO STRAY DOGS JUMP UP ON THE BENCHES AND BEGIN TO TEAR AT THE FOOD. SHAWN-DOUGLAS, MORE HUNGRY NOW THAN AFRAID, TRIES TO SHOO THEM AWAY. ONE DOG BARES HIS TEETH, THEN GOBBLES UP THE BAGEL, WHILE THE OTHER SCURRIES AWAY, CARRYING THE SANDWICH UNDER THE DOCK. SHAWN-DOUGLAS GOES TO THE OTHER BENCH AND SITS DOWN, WATCHING THE DOGS AS THEY SNIFF AROUND, LOOKING FOR MORE FOOD REMNANTS. SHAWN-DOUGLAS PICKS UP A MILK CARTON, SHAKES IT, LOOKS INSIDE, THEN CAUTIOUSLY TAKES A SIP. HE SCREWS UP HIS FACE AND STICKS OUT HIS TONGUE, BUT HUNGRILY DRINKS. HOLD ON SHAWN-DOUGLAS.

CUT TO: BRADY'S ROOM. JOHN IS WALKING A CRYING BRADY AROUND HIS ROOM, TRYING TO CALM DOWN THE CHILD. VIVIAN ENTERS, CARRYING A BOTTLE WITH SOME JUICE. IVAN FOLLOWS HER, HIS NOSE DEEP IN A BOOK ENTITLED "GUIDE TO DISEASES."

VIVIAN: Here, John... (VIVIAN PROFFERS THE BOTTLE) I hope this helps... (TO BRADY) Only the finest in apple juice for my young grand-nephew...

JOHN: Thanks, Vivian. I just wish this fever would break...

VIVIAN: It was only... what, 99.4? That's hardly a fever at all, for a baby...

JOHN: Yeah, but he's got the cough...

VIVIAN: It's probably a simple cold. Nikki was always coming down with little colds and sniffles in the winter... It seemed like once a month when he was a baby.

JOHN: You're probably right. But it's a father's prerogative to worry...

WE SEE IVAN, GROWING MORE AGITATED, LEAFING THROUGH THE PAGES OF THE BOOK.
VIVIAN: Of course it is. That's what parents do.

JOHN: And Aunties?

VIVIAN: (SMILES) On occasion. But we Aunties with experience know that it's probably nothing.

JOHN: Well, I'll bow to your greater expertise, but if Brady's not better by tonight, I think I'll call Dr. Stanford.

VIVIAN: A prudent plan... (LOOKING AT BRADY) and see, the apple juice seems to be working....

BRADY HAS CALMED DOWN AND IS CONTENTEDLY DRINKING HIS JUICE. WE HEAR IVAN GASP AND SEE HIM DROP THE BOOK.
IVAN: (LOUD WHISPER) Madame!
VIVIAN WALKS OVER TO IVAN.
VIVIAN: Ivan, what is it?

IVAN: I don't want to alarm your nephew... but I think young Master Brady has Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever...

OUT ON VIVIAN'S AMUSEMENT AT IVAN'S FALSE ALARM.

ACT I

SMALL NURSES' STATION/LOUNGE. MARCUS WALKS UP TO THE DUTY NURSE.
MARCUS: Someone paged me?

NURSE: There's a gentleman in the lounge to see you.

MARCUS NODS IN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AND WALKS INTO THE LOUNGE TO FIND JACK SITTING AT A TABLE, SIPPING JUICE FROM A CARTON.
MARCUS: (CONT'D) (SURPRISED) Jack!

JACK: Hello, Marcus.

MARCUS: What's up?

JACK: I was in the neighborhood and I thought I'd stop by to see you.

MARCUS: Jack, University Hospital is not exactly in your neighborhood...

JACK: Yes... well... (LOOKING AT THE JUICE) Ummm... really... I was thirsty and I knew this was a place where a stranger could stop in and get something to quench his thirst...

MARCUS: (BEMUSED) Jack... why don't you save us both a lot of time and cut to the chase?

JACK: I've been meaning to come by to see you...

MARCUS: Yes? And?

JACK: Ever since Steve's birthday... (BEAT) I... I feel like I've been neglecting my best man.

HOLD ON JACK.

CUT TO: ABIGAIL'S ROOM. JENNIFER IS DRESSING ABIGAIL.

JENNIFER: (HOLDING UP TWO DRESSES) Which one do you want to wear today, Abby? Blue or Green?

ABIGAIL: Boo!

JENNIFER: (CHUCKLING) Blue it is...

JENNIFER STARTS TO PUT THE DRESS ON ABIGAIL.
JENNIFER: (CONT'D) I wish we knew where your cousin Shawn-Douglas is. (BEAT) I don't know what I'd do if you were missing.

ABIGAIL: Mama!

JENNIFER: (SMILES) Yes, mama is here. Mama will always be here for you. Your mama, your daddy, your family and friends are the most important things in the whole world, Abby. You remember that.

JENNIFER FINISHES GETTING ABIGAIL DRESSED.
ABIGAIL: Oh-sey!

JENNIFER: You want your horsey? Okay...

JENNIFER REACHES FOR ABIGAIL'S STUFFED HORSE AS ABIGAIL TODDLES AFTER HER.
JENNIFER: (CONT'D) There you go, sweet thing.

ABIGAIL: (SMILING) Oh-sey!

JENNIFER: And what do you say, Abby?

ABIGAIL: (HOLDING HER HORSE, SHE LOOKS AT HER MOTHER, THEN SUDDENLY SMILES) T'ank you!

JENNIFER: You're welcome.

ABIGAIL TOTTERS OFF TO PLAY, AS JENNIFER WATCHES HER.
JENNIFER: (CONT'D) Abby, you and your Daddy are the most important people in my life... I hope you always remember that. (BEAT) And you know what I said earlier about friends and family? Maybe I should change that to just family. Sometimes friends betray you...

ABIGAIL: Be-tay you!

JENNIFER: (STUNNED) Abby... Darling girl... don't listen to your Mommy. She's having a bad day... (SHE BENDS DOWN AND PICKS UP ABIGAIL) Remember what I said about you and your Daddy...

ABIGAIL: Dada!

JENNIFER: Yes, your Daddy. Think about your Daddy. (SOTTO VOCE) And I'll think about putting Carly's ghost to rest... for all our sakes.

OUT ON JENNIFER'S DETERMINATION.

ACT II

BRADY KITCHEN. BO IS DIALING THE PHONE. JAMES ANSWERS, TWO WAY.
JAMES: Hello, James Ector.

BO: Hello, Dr. Ector, it's Bo Brady.

JAMES: Bo... is there any news?

BO: I'm afraid not. And I don't know what else to do.

JAMES: I understand, Bo. This is a terrible time for you. I wish there was something I could say to make it easier.

BO: I know, and I appreciate your concern. But it's so hard, not knowing if he's safe, if he's... he's...

JAMES: Bo, you must try and avoid thinking of all the bad possibilities and concentrate on Shawn-Douglas coming home safely.

BO: But being a cop, I know all the possibilities.

JAMES: I'm sure you do. We both know the grim statistics. But you must believe your son will not be one of them.

BO: I'm trying... In fact, that's why I called.

JAMES: For support?

BO: No... I'm doing everything I can to find my son before anything happens to him.

JAMES: How can I help? I've told you all I know.

BO: You've been great. But can we try again?

JAMES: Of course.

BO: Think. Do you have any ideas about what might have happened? Did Shawn-Douglas ever mention anyone watching him, or following him, in session?

JAMES: No, he didn't. In fact, in our last session, we didn't talk much at all. Shawn-Douglas was very emotional, very volatile...

BO: Why, do you think?

JAMES: I suspect he either has remembered, or is close to remembering something traumatic.

BO: The shooting...

JAMES: Perhaps... And I don't think he can face it...

BO: And there I was, pushing him to remember...

JAMES: And that was not wrong... You thought if he remembered it would help. It's often hard to tell, in cases like this, which is best... to remember or to forget...

BO: Right now, I don't care if he ever remembers anything... as long as he comes home...

HOLD ON BO'S ANGUISH.

CUT TO: SMALL NURSES' STATION/LOUNGE. JACK AND MARCUS. IN PROGRESS.

MARCUS: Umm... that's nice, Jack, but the best man doesn't feel especially neglected.

JACK: Yes, but you did me a favor... standing in for Steve... And I never thanked you properly...

MARCUS: No thanks were necessary. I was happy to do it for Steve... and for you.

JACK BEGINS TO TEAR LITTLE PIECES FROM THE JUICE CARTON.
JACK: Yeah... everyone loved Steve...

MARCUS: Not everyone... not in the beginning...

JACK: Maybe, but when he died... (SHAKING HIS HEAD) I can't believe he's been gone over three years...

MARCUS: I know... his birthday really brought it home...

JACK: I'm sure that was a difficult day for you...

MARCUS: I've had easier. But I feel that if we remember Steve every day, not just the day he was born... or the day he died... then he's not gone. Not really.

JACK: It's different for you, Marcus. You... You and Steve were so close. You said... what needed to be said.

MARCUS PUTS HIS HAND OVER JACK'S.
MARCUS: He knew, Jack. Steve knew how you felt.
JACK LOOKS AT MARCUS, THEN EMBARRASSED, PULLS AWAY HIS HAND.
JACK: Everything's so unresolved. With Steve. (BEAT) And with Kayla...

MARCUS: I don't think she feels that way.

JACK: I do. And even if she doesn't... it's not like we can go back to the easy friendship we once shared.

MARCUS: You might be surprised, Jack. Kayla's a very special woman...

JACK SHAKES HIMSELF A LITTLE.
JACK: Yes, on to happier subjects. I hear you and Kayla are keeping company these days.

MARCUS: (GRINNING) Yes, we are. I'm happy about it.

JACK: Everyone's pairing off, it seems. You and Kayla. Jo and Vern...

MARCUS: Jo's a good lady, she deserves some happiness after what she's been through.

JACK: Yes, Jennifer has been helping me see that...

THE TWO FALL SILENT FOR A MOMENT.
MARCUS: Jack? (BEAT) Don't get me wrong, this has been great, but...
JACK JUMPS UP FROM HIS CHAIR.
JACK: Oh, I'm sorry. You've got to go back to work. I understand.

MARCUS: No, it's not that. C'mon Jack. This visit is about more than small talk. Why are you stalling?

HOLD ON JACK'S WINCE.

CUT TO: BRADY KITCHEN. BO IS SITTING AT THE TABLE, STARING INTO SPACE. JULIE ENTERS THE ROOM.

JULIE: (TENTATIVELY) Bo?

BO: (STARTLED) Julie!

JULIE: Do you mind if I sit with you for a bit?

BO SHAKES HIS HEAD NO, AND JULIE TAKES A SEAT.
JULIE: (CONT'D) You're running yourself into the ground, darling. You must try to get a little bit of sleep. (BEAT) Or, at the very least, eat something.

BO: I can't Julie. I can't do anything until we find him.

JULIE TAKES HIS HAND.
BO: (CONT'D) I went to the cemetery this morning. I needed to talk to Hope. (BEAT) I told her I needed her... Our son needed her... (SOFTLY) I'm supposed to be able to protect him... And I didn't... (A TEAR FALLS FROM BO'S EYE) I can't handle losing them both, Julie.

JULIE: Oh, darling. (SQUEEZING BO'S HAND) You've done a wonderful job with Shawn-Douglas. Hope would be the first to tell you that. And if you start doubting yourself, you're doing a disservice to yourself, to Shawn-Douglas... and to Hope's memory.

BO REMOVES HIS HAND FROM JULIE'S GRASP, AND WIPES AWAY HIS TEARS. BO DOES NOT NOTICE THAT JULIE'S HANDS ARE TREMBLING.
BO: Thank you, Julie, but I think I want to be alone for awhile, if that's all right.

JULIE: Of course, Bo. And remember, we all love you.

JULIE STANDS. OUT ON JULIE, THE TEARS FORMING IN HER EYES.

ACT III

JACK AND JENNIFER'S LIVING ROOM. JENNIFER IS SEATED ON THE COUCH, DIALING THE PHONE. TWO-WAY.
OFFICER: Salem P.D.

JENNIFER: Yes. Captain Yamada, please.

OFFICER: Who may I ask is calling?

JENNIFER: Jennifer Deveraux.

OFFICER: One moment...

JENNIFER: Thank you.

JANET PICKS UP ON THE OTHER END.
JANET: Mrs. Deveraux, what can I do for you?

JENNIFER: Well, I'm trying to resolve something... And I could use your help.

JANET: I'll certainly try.

JENNIFER: It's about Carly Manning.

JANET: (WARILY) I see...

JENNIFER: Jack... my husband... told me that he's been working with you to investigate her death, and her past.

JANET: That's right.

JENNIFER: He's already showed me some of the evidence you've gathered. (BEAT) I was wondering if I could see what else you've found.

JANET: (HESITANTLY) I'm not sure...

JENNIFER: Listen, Captain. I thought she was my best friend in the entire world. I trusted her unconditionally. (BEAT) Now, my husband and my grandmother tell me that Carly lied to me from the day we met.

JANET: I'm sorry.

JENNIFER: I want to know the truth. All of it.

JANET: Well, it's not standard procedure...

JENNIFER: I know that. (BEAT) But, to be honest with you, I'm having a hard time believing all of the things I've heard about Carly. If I could look over your files, it would become more... real. Maybe I could start to accept it.

JANET: I see. As I said, Mrs. Deveraux, it isn't standard procedure. (BEAT) But then, this is hardly a standard case.

JENNIFER: Does that mean you'll help me?

JANET PAUSES BEFORE SPEAKING.
JANET: Why don't you come by my office this afternoon?

JENNIFER: Thank you, Captain. Thank you very much.

JANET: You're welcome. (BEAT) Listen, there's something that you could do for me.

JENNIFER: What is it?

JANET: I know it's probably difficult for you to talk about, but... As you're looking over the files, if there's anything you remember that might help...

JENNIFER: Sure. If I can remember anything, I'll let you know.

JANET: Okay. I'll see you this afternoon.

JENNIFER: Yes. See you this afternoon.

JANET: Good-bye.

JENNIFER: Good-bye.

JENNIFER HANGS UP THE PHONE.
JENNIFER: This afternoon... What is it they say about the truth setting you free?
HOLD ON JENNIFER'S DETERMINATION.

CUT TO: BRADY PUB. TOM, ALICE, DOUG, AND JULIE ARE SEATED IN A BOOTH. IN PROGRESS.

JULIE: (SADLY) Bo's devastated. He's blaming himself for everything. I tried to talk to him, convince him that it's not his fault, but...

ALICE: Give it time, dear. When Shawn-Douglas is back home, safe and sound, Bo will come around.

DOUG: I know how he feels right now. Losing your child... it tears out your heart.

DOUG TAKES JULIE'S HAND.
TOM: I know how difficult Hope's death was for you.

ALICE: It was difficult for all of us.

TOM: When I start to feel badly about Hope, I try to think about all the good times we had. I try to concentrate on the joy she brought to all our lives.

JULIE: You're right, Grandpa. We have to keep those good memories alive.

ALICE: (SMILING) I remember when she and Bo were children, how she used to follow him everywhere...

DOUG: Yes... No matter what I tried to do to dissuade her, I couldn't keep her away from that rascal.

ALICE: Love is a powerful force, Doug.

TOM: Spoken like a true match-maker.

JULIE: Well, Grandma was right about those two. Their love was something special.

DOUG: It was... And it gave us Shawn-Douglas. (BEAT) I'll never forget how proud I was when I held my grandson for the first time.

DOUG MANAGES A FAINT SMILE.
TOM: See? Those are the kind of memories we have to hold on to.

JULIE: I think about those times, and I can't believe that she's gone...

DOUG: I can't imagine what it was like to be there, to watch her die.

JULIE: (TEARS WELLING IN HER EYES) I was horrible, like a nightmare, except I was awake...

JULIE BEGINS TO BREAK DOWN.
JULIE: (CONT'D) I'm sorry... Will you excuse me?
JULIE GETS UP QUICKLY AND WALKS TOWARD THE LADIES' ROOM. DOUG LOOKS AFTER HER WITH CONCERN.

GO TO: THE STAIRWAY ENTRANCE. BO IS COMING BACK FROM UPSTAIRS. HE GOES TO THE BAR AND JOINS CAROLINE AND CARRIE.

CARRIE: Hi, Bo.

BO: Hey, kiddo.

CAROLINE: (CONCERNED) Bo, have you eaten anything today?

BO: Um... No, I guess I haven't.

CAROLINE: You've got to take better care of yourself. You need all your strength to find your son and bring him home.

CARRIE: Grandma's right. When Shawn-Douglas is found, he's going to need you more than ever.

BO: Don't worry, I'm fine. I'll eat if I get hungry...

CAROLINE: (PLEADING) Bo, please...

BO LOOKS AT CAROLINE, THEN AT CARRIE. CARRIE IS GIVING HIM A SIMILAR PLEADING LOOK.
BO: No fair, ganging up on me like this.

CARRIE: Whatever it takes...

BO: Okay, okay. I know better than to fight a double-team of Brady women...

CAROLINE: Good. I'm going to go back and fix you a sandwich.

CAROLINE HEADS BACK TOWARD THE KITCHEN.
BO: Hey, Ma! No mustard, okay?
CAROLINE SMILES BACK AT BO BEFORE ENTERING THE KITCHEN. BO TURNS TO CARRIE.
BO: (CONT'D) (TRYING) So, Carrie... How's life? Now that you've testified against Bartoli, are you starting to get back into a normal routine?

CARRIE: (OFFERING A DISTRACTION) Yeah, pretty much. I'm still looking over my shoulder now and then, but I'm much better.

BO: Don't worry, Bartoli's going away for a long time. He won't be able to hurt you again.

CARRIE: Let's hope so. I've got my hands full with Western Civ. 101!

BO: (GRIMACING) Ugh. That doesn't sound like much fun...

CARRIE: It isn't, believe me. The reading puts me to sleep...

OUT ON CARRIE AND BO'S CONVERSATION.

ACT IV

SMALL NURSES' STATION/LOUNGE. MARCUS IS SEATED, JACK IS STANDING. IN PROGRESS.
JACK: Stalling? I don't know what you mean...

MARCUS: Come on, Jack. You're a busy man. You wouldn't take time out of the work day for a casual chat... Even if it is with your best man. What's on your mind?

JACK: You're right. (BEAT, AS JACK SITS BACK DOWN) I came here to tell you something, I've been putting it off.

MARCUS: Sounds serious.

JACK: It is.

MARCUS: (WARILY) Let's have it.

JACK: It's about Carly.

MARCUS: Carly?

JACK: After she died, Jennifer asked me to write an article about her, to chronicle her life...

MARCUS: And...?

JACK: And, I found some unexpected things.

MARCUS: Like what?

JACK: Like, Carly was not a licensed doctor. She didn't have a medical degree. She never attended college.

MARCUS: (SHOCKED) What...?

JACK: She deceived everyone in Salem, even Jennifer.

MARCUS: I don't believe it. She was so caring, so dedicated to her patients...

JACK: That's what she wanted everyone to think. (BEAT) But, "Carly Manning" was just a facade. Katerina Von Leuschner was a... Well, she wasn't the kind of person we believed her to be.

MARCUS: How did you find all this out?

JACK: Transcripts, school records from the private schools she attended in Europe. I also received some help from Shane Donovan.

MARCUS: Shane?

JACK: Yes. Apparently, the I.S.A. had been watching Katerina for several years. She was observed socializing with several notorious crime figures in Europe.

MARCUS: You mean, like the Mafia?

JACK: Among others.

MARCUS: I don't know what to say. (BEAT) I'm shocked, I'm confused...

JACK: I understand. Jennifer's still upset about the whole thing. She's having a hard time coming to terms with it.

MARCUS: I can imagine. She and Carly were best friends...

JACK: Or so Jennifer thought. (BEAT) It's been painful for her.

MARCUS: Give her time... and some space. Let her be angry. Let her work through it.

JACK: (PROTESTING) I can't just stand by...

MARCUS: I know it's hard, but it's for the best. Be there for her, but don't try too hard. Let her ask for your help.

JACK: I see...

MARCUS: This is a lot to deal with. We all need some time to adjust.

JACK NODS. MARCUS IS SUDDENLY CONCERNED.
MARCUS: (CONT'D) Oh, geez... Jack, have you thought about what this story could do to the hospital? The scandal, the lawsuits... It could be devastating.

JACK: I know. I'm going to talk to the Doctors Horton about the situation before I run the article.

MARCUS: It's still bad news.

JACK: But it is news, and someone's eventually going to print it. (BEAT) I want to be the one to do it. I've made it clear that Katerina was the one in the wrong, that the hospital was just another victim of her deceptions.

MARCUS: (WORRIED) I hope that works.

JACK: So do I, Marcus. (BEAT) So do I.

HOLD ON JACK'S CONCERN.

CUT TO: BRADY PUB. SHAWN HAS GONE TO SIT WITH DOUG. CAROLINE AND CARRIE ARE STILL TRYING TO DISTRACT BO. VICTOR COMES IN WITH NICO. SHAWN IMMEDIATELY JUMPS UP. DOUG FOLLOWS.

SHAWN: For the last time, Kiriakis, you're not wanted here. I'll be thanking you to get out of my bar.

DOUG: This is a family vigil, Victor.

VICTOR: (QUIETLY) And for the last time, Shawn-Douglas is my family as much as he is yours. I am not leaving.

NICO STEPS FORWARD, BUT VICTOR WAVES HIM AWAY. CAROLINE STANDS UP BUT REMAINS SILENT FOR THE MOMENT.
DOUG: Victor, we've asked you nicely.

SHAWN: (ROLLING UP HIS SLEEVE) And now I'm gonna show you...

THE WHOLE PUB GROWS QUIET. BO STRIDES OVER AND GETS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE THREE MEN.
BO: Is this necessary? Do you really think I need the three of you brawling on top of everything else?
SHAWN AND DOUG LOOK CHASTISED BY BO, BUT CONTINUE TO GLARE AT VICTOR.
BO: (CONT'D) There isn't any news, Victor. Is that what you came for?

VICTOR: I'm sorry to hear that, Bo. I was hoping... (BEAT) I just read the article in The Spectator about the reward for Shawn-Douglas' return. (BEAT) I want to match it.

HOLD ON VICTOR'S OFFER.

CUT TO: SALEM PARK. SHAWN-DOUGLAS IS HIDING BEHIND A LARGE OAK TREE. HE SHIVERS SLIGHTLY, AS HE WATCHES SOME CHILDREN IN A PLAYGROUND. A BROTHER AND SISTER LAUGH WHILE RIDING THE SWINGS. A YOUNG MOTHER CATCHES HER LITTLE GIRL, JUST AS SHE FINISHES USING THE SLIDE. NEARBY, A FATHER AND SON PLAY CATCH. AS SHAWN-DOUGLAS WATCHES THE CHILDREN, HE HESITATES BRIEFLY, ABOUT TO JOIN IN THE FUN, BUT FEAR TAKES OVER, AND HE CONTINUES TO HIDE BEHIND THE TREE. HE WATCHES THE LITTLE BOY RUN INTO HIS FATHER'S ARMS AFTER SUCCESSFULLY CATCHING A FLY BALL. TEARS BEGIN TO RUN DOWN HIS CHEEKS.

SHAWN-D: Papa...
OUT ON SHAWN-DOUGLAS AS HE LEANS HIS FOREHEAD AGAINST THE TRUNK OF THE TREE AND CONTINUES TO CRY.

ACT V

JANET'S OFFICE. JENNIFER IS SITTING ACROSS FROM JANET, READING THE FILES ON CARLY. A TEAR RUNS DOWN HER CHEEK. IN PROGRESS.
JENNIFER: I feel so betrayed! Carly was my best friend. I trusted her.
JANET SILENTLY HOLDS OUT A BOX OF TISSUES. JENNIFER TAKES A TISSUE AND WIPES HER EYES.
JENNIFER: (CONT'D) It was all a lie, everything. It's like all my memories of adolescence are shattered, like they never happened.
JENNIFER REACHES FOR ANOTHER TISSUE.
JENNIFER: (CONT'D) I'm sorry, Captain Yamada. You don't want to hear any of this. You didn't know Carly. You don't even know me.

JANET: I know this has been a shock. If it's any consolation, Carly seems to have been very good at deception. A lot of people felt as you did.

JENNIFER WIPES HER EYES AND TRIES TO REGAIN HER COMPOSURE. JANET LOOKS A LITTLE UNCOMFORTABLE.
JENNIFER: Yes, but had any of them known her so long?

JANET: I don't know, Mrs. Deveraux. As I said, it seems she fooled everyone.

JENNIFER: Not everyone... not Jack... he never trusted her...

JANET: Your husband must be an unusually perceptive man.

JENNIFER: (SMILING IN SPITE OF HERSELF) I think he'd be surprised to hear that, but, in fact, he is. It must come from his years as a reporter. He's always watching... thinking...

JANET: Then you two must be a perfect match.

JENNIFER: I like to think so. But why do you say that?

JANET: I admit, I'm not very current on this sort of thing, but don't you have your own talk show?

JENNIFER BURSTS INTO TEARS AGAIN AND GRABS FOR THE TISSUE BOX. HOLD ON JANET'S "WHAT DID I SAY NOW?" EXPRESSION.

CUT TO: BRADY PUB. BO, DOUG, VICTOR, SHAWN, NICO. IN PROGRESS.

SHAWN: Isn't that's just like you, Kiriakis. Throwing your dirty money around.

DOUG: And what do you want in return?

VICTOR: I don't have an ulterior motive. I love Shawn-Douglas and I want his safe return as much as you do.

BO: I accept.

DOUG: (SHOCKED) What?

BO: I said, I accept. Thank you, Victor.

VICTOR: You're welcome, Bo. I've already instructed my accountant to have the money deposited in a special account.

SHAWN: Bo! Have some pride, son!

JULIE RETURNS AND STANDS IN THE BACK QUIETLY OBSERVING.
DOUG: Bo, if it's a question of money, you can come to me.

SHAWN: How do we know you didn't set up this whole thing, Kiriakis? You might be putting that money right back into your own pocket!

BO: Enough! I can't let your petty feuds get in the way of finding my son. And bringing him home safe is what's important here. (TO DOUG) Not the money. (TO SHAWN) And not your pride.

JULIE STEPS FORWARD.
JULIE: Well said, Bo. I'm sure all the gentlemen will agree, (LOOKING AT DOUG AND SHAWN) the only important thing is to bring home our grandson, safe and sound.
HOLD ON VICTOR'S NOD TO JULIE.

CUT TO: JANET'S OFFICE. JENNIFER'S EYES ARE DRY, AS SHE SPEAKS TO JANET. IN PROGRESS.

JENNIFER: So you see, I was fired. The past several months, I've been functioning as a "domestic engineer." (SIGHS) You know, basic housewife and mother...

JANET: I'm sure that's very... fulfilling...

JENNIFER: Oh, definitely. Nothing quite like the thrill of the kitchen floor being as shiny as it can be...

JANET: Um... well, it must be nice, spending so much time with your daughter...

JENNIFER: It would be, but Rosie, Abby's nanny and my general help-around-the-house, takes such good care of things, there's not much for me to do...

JANET: Sometimes I think I'd like to have "not much to do..." Here at the cop shop, there's so much stress, so much happening, so many problems to solve and challenges to meet...

JENNIFER: I'd love to have some problems to solve, or challenges... besides, of course, what to wear, and what to have for lunch...

JANET: I guess there are good and bad sides to everything...

THEY SIT QUIETLY FOR A MOMENT.
JANET: (CONT'D) This isn't going too well, is it?

JENNIFER: What isn't?

JANET: This... small talk... this social conversation... I'm just too used to talking to cops... I suppose you're lucky I haven't asked if you've tested any driver-side airbags lately.

JENNIFER LOOKS STARTLED, THEN BEGINS TO LAUGH. JANET, RELIEVED, JOINS IN. OUT ON THE TWO WOMEN'S MIRTH.

ACT VI

BRADY PUB. DOUG AND SHAWN ARE FACING OFF WITH VICTOR AND NICO, WITH BO AND JULIE IN THE MIDDLE. IN PROGRESS.
DOUG: Julie, how can you defend that man? After everything he's done...

JULIE: Doug, please try to calm down. Bo's right... we can't let any dislikes or disagreements get in the way of finding Shawn-Douglas. Anyone who's willing to help is an ally right now.

DOUG: I can't believe he doesn't have some ulterior motive.

JULIE: I don't believe he does.

DOUG LOOKS AT HER IN DISBELIEF.
JULIE: (CONT'D) Listen, I know that Victor's no saint, but there's one thing I'm certain of: He's dedicated to his family, and he would do anything for them.
VICTOR NODS IN AGREEMENT.
JULIE: (CONT'D) Shawn-Douglas is Victor's grandson, too. I believe that he wants his grandson to be returned, safe and sound.

VICTOR: Thank you, Julie. That's what I've been trying to tell everyone... Maybe they'll listen to you.

SHAWN FUMES, BUT BO INTERJECTS BEFORE HE CAN SAY ANYTHING.
BO: Look, we can use all the help we can get. If a big reward is what we need to bring my son home, then I'd sell my soul to the devil himself.

SHAWN: That's just what you'll be doin'...

BO: (INTERRUPTING) Pop, please! Stop it! Can't we all stop this bickering and work together to find Shawn-Douglas? Please? I don't want to have to ask again... I shouldn't have to.

SHAWN: All right, son. For you. And for your boy.

BO: Doug?

DOUG: (GRUDGINGLY) Okay. A truce... for now.

BO: Victor?

VICTOR: Of course. I'm here to help my grandson... nothing more.

BO: Okay. Let's concentrate on finding Shawn-D now.

THE GROUP BREAKS UP. VICTOR AND NICO SIT AT A TABLE IN A REMOTE CORNER. CAROLINE WALKS OVER.
CAROLINE: Victor...

VICTOR: Hello, Caroline.

CAROLINE: I wanted to thank for matching the reward offer.

VICTOR: You know I'd do anything to ensure my grandson's safety.

CAROLINE: I know. (BEAT) I'm sorry about Shawn's behavior. No one's been sleeping much, everyone's worried. We're all on edge.

VICTOR: Caroline, we both know that Shawn's attitude toward me has nothing to do with how much sleep he's gotten.

CAROLINE AND VICTOR EXCHANGE A LOOK. THEN CAROLINE LOOKS BACK AT THE BAR, TO MAKE SURE SHAWN AND BO ARE NOT WITHIN EARSHOT. SHE TURNS BACK TO VICTOR.
CAROLINE: (QUIETLY) I wanted to ask you... Have you heard anything from the private investigator you hired?

VICTOR: No, I'm sorry. I've hired several investigators, but not one of them has found any clues. (BEAT) If I do learn anything, I'll let you know right away, of course.

CAROLINE: Thank you. I really appreciate all you're doing...

VICTOR: We're all doing what we can. I hope that we're successful. And soon.

HOLD ON VICTOR'S CONCERN.

CUT TO: STEPHANIE'S ROOM. STEPHANIE IS SITTING UP IN BED, WITH A THERMOMETER IN HER MOUTH. SHE IS FIDGETING. KAYLA CHECKS HER WATCH TO SEE HOW LONG UNTIL SHE CAN TAKE OUT THE THERMOMETER.

KAYLA: Stephanie, hold still! This will be over a lot faster if you'll stop squirming.
STEPHANIE SETTLES DOWN, BUT SHE IS POUTING. KAYLA KEEPS AN EYE ON HER WATCH, THEN REMOVES THE THERMOMETER.
KAYLA: (READING THE THERMOMETER) 101.5 ? That's up almost a degree in the last two hours.

STEPHANIE: Mommy, I'm thirsty.

KAYLA HANDS STEPHANIE THE GLASS OF WATER THAT WAS ON THE NIGHTSTAND.
KAYLA: (STROKING STEPHANIE'S HAIR) I hope this isn't a relapse of the flu. It took so long to go away the first time...

STEPHANIE: Mommy, I'm hot!

KAYLA: I'll go get you a cold cloth. I'll be right back, okay?

STEPHANIE NODS. KAYLA GETS UP AND HEADS FOR THE BATHROOM.
KAYLA: (CONT'D) (SOTTO VOCE) Once Steffi gets settled down, I'll call the pub. (BEAT) There's got to be some news by now.

STEPHANIE: Mommy!

HOLD ON KAYLA'S EXHAUSTION.

CUT TO: BO'S BOAT/INT. BO IS SITTING ON HIS BED, LOOKING FORLORNLY AT A PHOTOGRAPH OF HIMSELF AND SHAWN-DOUGLAS.

BO: My little sailor man... Where are you?
BO IS NEAR TEARS WHEN HE HEARS BOB CALL DOWN FROM ON DECK.
BOB: (V.O.) Bo! Hey, Bo! You down there?
BO GATHERS HIMSELF, LAYS THE PHOTOGRAPH DOWN ON HIS BED, AND EXITS THE BEDROOM. HE CALLS BACK TO BOB AS HE APPROACHES THE STAIRS.
BO: Yeah, Bob, I'm here! What's up?

BOB: (V.O.) I've got someone with me... Someone you'll want to see.

BO'S EYES GROW WIDE WITH ANTICIPATION. HE LEAPS TOWARD THE STAIRS.

CUT TO: BO'S BOAT/EXT. BO EMERGES FROM BELOW. HIS JAW DROPS OPEN IN DISBELIEF AS HE SEES BOB, CRADLING SHAWN-DOUGLAS.

BO: Oh, my God...
BO RUSHES TO BOB, WHO HANDS SHAWN-DOUGLAS OVER. BO HUGS HIS SON TIGHTLY.
BO: Shawn-D... You're home... Thank God.
SHAWN-DOUGLAS SAYS NOTHING, BUT BURIES HIS FACE IN BO'S CHEST. BO LOOKS AT BOB QUESTIONINGLY.
BO: (CONT'D) Where...?

BOB: We found him over at the farmers' market, trying to steal some fruit.

BO: Oh, no...

BOB: Don't worry, the owner's not going to press any charges.

BO SIGHS WITH RELIEF. BOB HOLDS OUT A LARGE BAG FROM A FAST-FOOD RESTAURANT.
BOB: (CONT'D) I'm sure your boy's hungry. (BEAT) You must be, too. I picked up some burgers and fries for both of you.
BO SETS DOWN SHAWN-DOUGLAS, BUT KEEPS HIS ARM AROUND HIM. WITH HIS FREE HAND, HE REACHES OUT AND TAKES THE BAG.
BO: (TO SHAWN-DOUGLAS) Hey, Sailor. You hungry? You want a burger?
BO HOLDS THE BAG IN FRONT OF SHAWN-DOUGLAS, WHO CAUTIOUSLY TAKES THE BAG. BO LOOKS BACK AT BOB.
BO: Bob, I... I can't thank you enough for bringing home my son.
BO EXTENDS HIS HAND.
BOB: (TAKING BO'S HAND AND SHAKING IT) I'm just glad he's unhurt and back where he belongs.
BOB LOOKS AT SHAWN-DOUGLAS WITH CONCERN, THEN BACK AT BO.
BOB: (CONT'D) If you need anything, give me a call, okay?

BO: Okay. (BEAT) Thanks, again.

BOB: Take care, Bo. Of both of you.

BOB STEPS OFF ONTO THE DOCK AND EXITS. BO KNEELS DOWN IN FRONT OF SHAWN-DOUGLAS.
BO: Are you okay, Shawn-D? Are you hurt?
SHAWN-DOUGLAS SHAKES HIS HEAD.
BO: (CONT'D) You wanna go down and eat?
SHAWN-DOUGLAS NODS.
BO: (CONT'D) Okay. (BEAT) C'mere.
BO PUTS HIS ARMS AROUND SHAWN-DOUGLAS AND PULLS HIM CLOSE.
BO: (CONT'D) Everything's gonna be okay. I'm not gonna let anything happen to you...
OUT ON BO'S LOVE FOR HIS SON.

ACT VII

JANET'S OFFICE. JANET AND JENNIFER ARE TALKING. IN PROGRESS.
JANET: You're kidding! Jack actually proposed to you on live TV! Unbelievable.

JENNIFER: Uh-huh. Although, that wasn't the only proposal... just the last one.

JANET: How many proposals did you get?

JENNIFER: Three. No, four. No, I think it was three. Anyway, they were all very romantic...

JANET: Jack Deveraux never struck me as the romantic type. But, after seeing his performance at the Benefit, I must say he has potential, if not extreme persistence.

JENNIFER: Jack's got more than potential. But I'm sure you must have a number of men lining up to go out with you.

JANET: Except for one or two criminals to whom I gave a break... and in my dreams, Denzel Washington, I'm afraid the line is empty.

THEY LAUGH.
JENNIFER: You're joking, right.

JANET: I'm afraid the police business doesn't allow me much time for a social life...

JENNIFER: But at least you have a career. I sit at home all day becoming addicted to soap operas. My excitement of the moment is finding out who Jacqueline is sleeping with on "Fate's Arrow".

JANET: Say, who is her latest?

JENNIFER: (LAUGHING) Don't tell me, you watch that?

JANET: I catch it every now and then.

JENNIFER: You know, we should meet for lunch sometime.

JANET: I'd love that! Anything to get me outta this office.

JENNIFER: And get me out of the house.

JANET: Great... and you can update me on "Fate's Arrow." So, who's Steven Jameson married to these days?

JENNIFER: Victoria Mason.

JANET: What? Did Victor Mason have a long-lost sister?

JENNIFER: Not exactly...

JANET: Then don't you mean Victor Mason.

JENNIFER: Nope. He's Victoria now.

HOLD ON JANET AND JENNIFER AS THEY BURST INTO LAUGHTER.

CUT TO: BO'S BOAT. BO AND SHAWN-DOUGLAS ARE SITTING AT THE TABLE. SHAWN-DOUGLAS IS WOLFING DOWN HIS HAMBURGERS AND FRENCH FRIES, WHILE BO LOOKS AT HIS SON IN AMAZEMENT.

BO: I can't believe you're actually home, Sailor.

SHAWN-D: Rrmff tmm Pmmp!

BO: (LAUGHING) I guess I shouldn't scold you about talking with your mouth full. Hey, do you want my burger?

SHAWN-D: Mmm hmmm!

BO HANDS SHAWN-DOUGLAS HIS UNTOUCHED HAMBURGER.
BO: Tell me, Sailor, exactly where did you go this whole time?
SHAWN-DOUGLAS REACHES FOR HIS DRINK WITHOUT SAYING A WORD.
BO: (CONT'D) I need to know if you're okay. Did anyone hurt you in any way?
SHAWN-DOUGLAS PUTS DOWN HIS DRINK, AND SHAKES HIS HEAD.
BO: (CONT'D) Do you feel like talking about it?
SHAWN-DOUGLAS SHAKES HIS HEAD ONCE AGAIN.
BO: (CONT'D) That's okay.
BO REACHES OVER AND PULLS SHAWN-DOUGLAS INTO A TIGHT HUG.
BO: (CONT'D) I'm just happy that you're all right and you're home. We'll work out everything later.
SHAWN-DOUGLAS APPREHENSIVELY LOOKS UP AT BO.
SHAWN-D: I'm sorry, Papa.

BO: Don't be sorry, Sailor. I have a feeling, I'm the one who should be sorry.

SHAWN-DOUGLAS GIVES BO ANOTHER HUG.
BO: (CONT'D) Looks like you've finished off my burger already. Do you want to share my fries?
SHAWN-DOUGLAS SMILES, AND REACHES FOR ONE OF BO'S FRENCH FRIES. HOLD ON THE TWO, SMILING AT EACH OTHER.

CUT TO: STEPHANIE'S ROOM. WE HEAR "GOODNIGHT MY ANGEL" BY BILLY JOEL BEGIN TO PLAY, AS WE GO INTO MONTAGE. MARCUS SITS NEAR STEPHANIE'S BED. KAYLA SITS ON TOP OF THE COVERS, NEXT TO STEPHANIE, WHO IS TUCKED IN TIGHT. MARCUS IS GESTURING WILDLY, OBVIOUSLY TELLING STEPHANIE AN INTRICATE, FASCINATING FAIRY-TALE, AS SHE CUDDLES UP AGAINST KAYLA. MARCUS IS OBVIOUSLY IN HIS ELEMENT. KAYLA LOOKS LOVINGLY AT HER DAUGHTER, AND AT MARCUS.

CUT TO: BRADY'S ROOM. JOHN IS HOLDING A QUIET, NEARLY SLEEPING BRADY. JOHN WALKS OVER TO STAND IN FRONT OF THE WINDOW, SO THAT BRADY CAN SEE THE SKYLINE, AND THE CLEAR, STAR-FILLED WINTER SKY. LOOKING AT ISABELLA'S STAR, JOHN CUDDLES BRADY CLOSER.

CUT TO: JOHN'S LOFT. NICHOLAS AND IVAN ARE PLAYING A GAME ON NICHOLAS' COMPUTER. NICHOLAS IS BEATING IVAN SOUNDLY. IVAN PLAYFULLY SHAKES HIS FIST AT NICHOLAS, VOWING REVENGE, AS NICHOLAS CONVULSES IN LAUGHTER. FROM THE FIRE, VIVIAN WATCHES THEM BOTH, WITH AN ADORING LOOK FOR NICHOLAS. IVAN CATCHES HER EYE OVER NICHOLAS' HEAD, AND THEY EXCHANGE A DEEP LOOK.

CUT TO: JACK AND JENNIFER'S LIVING ROOM. JENNIFER AND ABIGAIL ARE SITTING ON THE COUCH. JACK COMES OUT FROM THE KITCHEN WITH A GALLON OF ICE-CREAM, A SCOOP, BOWLS AND SPOONS. ABIGAIL CLAPS IN DELIGHT WHEN SHE SEES THE ICE-CREAM, BUT JENNIFER LOOKS ASKANCE AT THE SCOOP AND BOWLS. SHE PUTS THEM ASIDE, THEN TAKES ONE SPOON AND DIGS INTO THE ICE-CREAM, SPOONING A BITE FOR ABIGAIL, THEN FOR JACK. JACK, GETTING IN THE SPIRIT OF THINGS, TAKES A SPOON AND FEEDS JENNIFER A BITE. HOLD ON THE THREE.

CUT TO: BO'S BOAT. BO IS LYING IN BED, A SLEEPING SHAWN-DOUGLAS NEXT TO HIM, CLINGING TO BO'S HAND, EVEN IN SLUMBER. BO'S FACE SHOWS A MIXTURE OF RELIEF AND CONCERN, AS SHAWN-DOUGLAS WHIMPERS IN HIS SLEEP. HOLD ON BO'S TROUBLED FACE. AND OUT. FADE TO BLACK.
