DEVERAUX DAYCARE. NORMA MUIR, ONE OF THE TWO NEW TEACHERS, IS PUTTING ONE OF THE SMALLER CHILDREN DOWN FOR A NAP. BETH FLETCHER, THE OTHER NEW TEACHER, IS TELLING A STORY WHILE MAGGIE AND JENNIFER ARE FILLING GLASSES OF JUICE.BETH: And they lived happily ever after. The end. (BEAT) Okay, children, Mrs. Horton and Mrs. Deveraux have juice for everyone.
THE CHILDREN HEAD TOWARD MAGGIE AND JENNIFER. MAGGIE AND JENNIFER PASS OUT THE GLASSES.MAGGIE: I really envy you, Beth. You get to spend all day around children.
BETH: You envy me? You're here almost as much as I am.
MAGGIE: And I love every minute of it! Since Melissa and Sarah moved away, there's been a void in my life. (BEAT) This helps fill it.
NORMA, OVERHEARING MAGGIE, JOINS THE CONVERSATION .NORMA: Being around children keeps one young, Maggie.
MAGGIE: You're right. You'll never feel more alive than when you're with children. (BEAT) And that's why you should spend as much time as you can with Abby, Jennifer... before you know it, she'll be off to college.
BETH: I think she's got a little time left...
JENNIFER: (DISTRACTED) Yeah, I guess so. (BEAT) I'm going to go upstairs and see Jack for a few minutes.
JENNIFER LEAVES.NORMA: Something's troubling, Jennifer, isn't it?
HOLD ON NORMA'S QUESTION.SPENCER: And I'm telling you that unless you find that testimony, heads are gonna roll!CUT TO: SPENCER'S OFFICE. SPENCER IS SITTING AT HIS DESK, HEATEDLY TALKING ON THE PHONE. THERE IS A KNOCK ON THE DOOR AND CARRIE STICKS IN HER HEAD. NOTICING THE EXPRESSION ON SPENCER'S FACE, SHE ATTEMPTS TO LEAVE. SPENCER WAVES HER IN.
CARRIE SITS IN THE CHAIR ACROSS FROM SPENCER, NERVOUSLY PICKING AT HER NAILS.SPENCER: (CONT'D) Don't give me those lame excuses, Ryerson! You've got until 3:00 today and you better not disappoint me.
SPENCER HANGS UP THE PHONE AND TURNS TO CARRIE, WHO APPEARS TO BE A BIT SHAKY.SPENCER: (CONT'D) Sorry to keep you waiting, Carrie. (NOTICING HER EXPRESSION) What's the matter?
CARRIE: (NODDING TO THE PHONE) I hope that wasn't all to do with Gus. Was it?
SPENCER: That? Nah. Just the usual three-ring circus down at the County Clerk's office. (BEAT) However, I did call you to talk about Gus.
CARRIE: I knew it. Something's wrong.
SPENCER: No, nothing is wrong.
CARRIE: But something happened, right? Will I have to testify again?
SPENCER: Yup, something sure did. And you won't be needing to go back on the stand. (BEAT) In fact, you won't even have to go inside the courtroom.
CARRIE: I don't understand.
SPENCER: It's over, Carrie. The trial is over.
CARRIE: It's over? You mean all together?
SPENCER: Yes. Gus is going to jail and you can stop looking over your shoulder.
HOLD ON CARRIE'S SHOCK.RICHARD: Oh boy. (BEAT) I guess I'll get cracking on this stuff right away. No sense in waiting.CUT TO: JULIE'S OFFICE. JULIE AND RICHARD ARE WRAPPING UP A LONG MEETING. RICHARD STANDS AND STRETCHES.
JULIE: Actually, Richard, it can wait.
RICHARD: I'm sorry. Weren't we finished?
JULIE: Just about. (BEAT) Have you got any plans for this evening?
RICHARD: (CAUTIOUSLY) No... Did you need me for something?
JULIE: Yes, I'd like to invite you to dinner at Euterpe.
RICHARD: (SURPRISED) Dinner? (TEASINGLY) Well, I don't know. You're a married woman... Euterpe is your husband's restaurant... Shall I wear dark glasses?
JULIE: (LAUGHING) I think you can show your face without fear. (BEAT) I'd like to reward you for all your hard work and dedication.
RICHARD: Aw shucks, Ma'am. Just doin' my job.
JULIE: Richard, as your employer, this is my way of saying thank you. (BEAT) And as your friend, this is my way of saying you need to get out more. You're becoming a workaholic.
RICHARD: Takes one to know one. (BOWING) Thank you, Julie. I accept with pleasure.
OUT ON JULIE'S DELIGHT.
SPENCER'S OFFICE. CARRIE AND SPENCER. IN PROGRESS.CARRIE: How can the trial be over just like that?
SPENCER: It was a plea bargain. We got Gus to plead guilty to simple assault.
CARRIE: I don't believe this. (BEAT) Why?
SPENCER: Gus lost his alibi. Combine that with his past history of arrests for violent crimes and your solid testimony... (SMILES)
CARRIE: My testimony?
SPENCER: Yes. You were a good, believable witness. You helped put away Gus.
CARRIE: I did?
SPENCER: Yes. You were great up on the stand.
CARRIE: All I did was tell the truth.
SPENCER: Which is exactly what we needed. We'll have Gus behind bars for a long while. Congratulations.
HOLD ON CARRIE'S RELIEF.JENNIFER: Jack, what do you think... (LOOKING AROUND) Jack?CUT TO: JACK'S OFFICE. THE OFFICE IS EMPTY. JENNIFER OPENS THE DOOR AND STRIDES IN.
VERN COMES INSIDE.VERN: Jack, can... (SEES JENNIFER) Hi there, Jenny girl! What brings you by?
JENNIFER: I came up to see Jack... and if I'm honest, to visit the Spectator...
VERN: Didn't I tell you that you belong here?
JENNIFER: I don't know, Vern.
JACK COMES AROUND THE CORNER AND HEARING VERN AND JENNIFER, STOPS AND EAVESDROPS.VERN: What do you mean you don't know? Of course you belong here. The other night proved it.
JENNIFER: Well...
VERN: Come on, admit it. The thrill of making a deadline, scooping the Chronicle on the big story... You've got printer's ink in your veins, Jenny girl, just like the rest of us.
JENNIFER: Maybe you're right.
VERN: I'm always right! (LAUGHING) Just don't tell Jack.
JENNIFER: (SMILES) I promise. (BEAT) But you know, Vern, I think you are right. I do miss the Spectator.
JACK, STILL UNSEEN, RUBS HIS JAW. HOLD ON JACK'S SPECULATION.BO: Okay, Sailor, we've got ham, bologna, and peanut butter. What are you in the mood for?CUT TO: BO'S BOAT / INT. BO AND SHAWN-D ARE AT THE TABLE. THERE ARE A PILE OF SANDWICHES IN FRONT OF THEM.
SHAWN-D: (MONOTONE) I don't care.
BO: Well, you usually like bologna best, so why don't you start with that.
BO PUTS THE SANDWICH ON SHAWN-D'S PLATE, BUT SHAWN-D DOESN'T BEGIN TO EAT.BO: (CONT'D) We've got the whole day; is there anything special you'd like to do?
SHAWN-D: No.
BO IS OBVIOUSLY TRYING TO REMAIN CALM.BO: I know! Let's pull up anchor and take a ride up the river, and get away from everything. Would that help?
SHAWN-D SHRUGS HIS SHOULDERS. OUT ON BO CLINCHING HIS FISTS IN FRUSTRATION.
JO'S APARTMENT. JO ANSWERS THE RINGING PHONE. IT'S VERN, TWO-WAY.JO: Hello?
VERN: Hi Jo, it's Vern.
JO: Vern, hello, how are you?
VERN: I'm fine. How's my favorite lady?
JO: Oh, not bad. Typical day. Nothing special.
VERN: Well, I've got something special for you. How'd you like to go out to dinner tonight at the nicest place in Salem?
JO: Dinner?
VERN: Yes. Are you free?
JO: I suppose...
VERN: Come on... We can go to Euterpe. Julie keeps telling me how wonderful it is.
JO: All right, but Euterpe? That's one of the most expensive places in Salem. This must be a very special occasion.
VERN: It is. I want the chance to spend some time with you.
JO: Oh, Vern... That's so sweet...
VERN: I'll pick you up, say... 7:30?
JO: 7:30 will be fine.
VERN: Great. I'll see you then.
HOLD ON JO'S SMILE AS SHE HANGS UP.JOHN: Hello?CUT TO: BO'S BOAT / INT. SHAWN-DOUGLAS HAS GONE BACK TO HIS ROOM. BO IS DIALING THE PHONE. TWO-WAY.
BO: (DEJECTEDLY) John, it's Bo.
JOHN: Hey, Bo... What's wrong?
BO: It's Shawn-Douglas. He's getting more withdrawn every day, and I don't know what I can do to help him. (BEAT) My son is slipping away from me right before my eyes, and I can't seem to do a damn thing about it.
JOHN: Would it help if I came over there?
BO: I'd really appreciate it if you did. (BEAT) Maybe you can help me figure out what I can do.
JOHN: Well, I'm not sure how much help I'll be, but I'll try. (BEAT) And if nothing else, I'll listen.
BO: Thanks, John. It means a lot to me.
JOHN: I'll be over there in a few minutes. Bye.
BO: Bye.
HOLD ON BO.JONAH: Hey, Brady! What's up?CUT TO: CARVER HOUSE. JONAH IS ON THE COUCH, STUDYING. HIS CONCENTRATION IS BROKEN BY A KNOCK AT THE DOOR. HE GETS UP AND OPENS THE DOOR. CARRIE IS STANDING THERE, LOOKING PENSIVE.
CARRIE: Hi, Jonah. I hope I didn't come at a bad time...
JONAH: Not at all! Come on in.
CARRIE ENTERS AND JONAH CLOSES THE DOOR.CARRIE: I'm sorry I didn't call first. I shouldn't just drop by, but...
JONAH: (PUTTING HIS HAND ON HER SHOULDER) Don't worry about it. You know you're always welcome.
CARRIE: Thanks. I really need to talk to someone.
JONAH: You've got it. Here, let me make room...
JONAH GOES TO THE COUCH AND MOVES HIS BOOKS TO THE FLOOR. HE THEN MOTIONS TO THE EMPTY SPACE ON THE COUCH.JONAH: (CONT'D) There we go. Have a seat. Dr. Jonah is in.
CARRIE: (SITTING DOWN) "Dr. Jonah," huh? You're not studying to be a shrink.
JONAH: (SITTING NEXT TO CARRIE) True. I guess that means I can't send you a bill.
CARRIE SMILES.JONAH: (CONT'D) But I'll still listen.
CARRIE: Okay. (BEAT) I just came from the D.A.'s office.
JONAH: The D.A.'s office? What were you doing there?
CARRIE: Spencer Hanlon called me in to talk.
JONAH: About what? Did something go wrong with the case?
CARRIE: No... not exactly.
JONAH: What do you mean, "not exactly"?
CARRIE: The trial's over. Gus is going to jail.
JONAH: (SMILING) That's great! It's finally over. You must be psyched.
CARRIE LOOKS AT JONAH WITH A BLANK EXPRESSION. HIS SMILE FADES.JONAH: (CONT'D) Or not. (BEAT) What's wrong? Why aren't you happy about this?
CARRIE: I don't know. (BEAT) Maybe it's too sudden.
JONAH: What happened, anyway? I thought there was supposed to be some more testimony, closing arguments, and that kind of stuff...
CARRIE: You're right, it was supposed to go on longer, but there was a plea bargain.
JONAH: What was the deal?
CARRIE: The Salem PD was able to prove that Gus' alibi for that night was a fake. Gus knew he was going to be convicted, so he pleaded guilty to assault.
JONAH: But he's still going to do time, right?
CARRIE: Oh, yeah, he's going to jail.
JONAH: Then everything's going to be okay. Gus will be behind bars, where he belongs, and you won't have to worry about him anymore.
CARRIE: I know. I know it's a good thing. We won the case, Gus is going to pay for what he did... I thought I'd feel better once it was over.
JONAH: But you don't?
CARRIE: I don't know what to feel. (BEAT) I went through a lot of pain, with the attack, the scars... Then, the plastic surgery, and preparing for the trial...
JONAH: I know how tough it's been on you.
CARRIE: Now, it's all over, just like that.
CARRIE SNAPS HER FINGERS.CARRIE: (CONT'D) What am I supposed to do now?
JONAH: It seems pretty obvious to me.
CARRIE: Well, that makes one of us. (BEAT) So, what's the answer, Dr. Carver? What do I do now?
JONAH: Now, you take all that pain, all those bad memories, and you put that part of your life behind you. (TAKING HER HAND IN HIS) And you start concentrating on the rest of your life... on your future.
JONAH LOOKS AT CARRIE AFFECTIONATELY. CARRIE'S LOOK IS ONE OF HESITATION. OUT ON CARRIE.
JACK AND JENNIFER'S LIVING ROOM. THE LIGHTS ARE TURNED DOWN LOW. SOFT MUSIC IS PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND AND A SMALL TABLE HAS BEEN SET FOR TWO. JACK HAS JUST PUT A SERVING DISH DOWN WHEN JENNIFER WALKS IN. SHE STOPS AND SURVEYS THE SCENE. JACK PLUCKS A DELPHINIUM FROM THE VASE ON THE TABLE AND PRESENTS IT TO JENNIFER WITH A FLOURISH.JACK: For you, Mrs. D.
JENNIFER: (SNIFFING THE FLOWER) My favorite! (BEAT) Everything looks beautiful. What's the occasion?
JACK: (SHRUGGING) No occasion. Do we need one?
JENNIFER: (TEASING) We certainly don't, Mr. D. (BEAT) But you must want something, to go to all this trouble.
JACK: (ACTING HURT) Why must you always assume I have an ulterior motive? Perhaps I simply wanted to romance my lovely wife...
JENNIFER: Perhaps. But my woman's intuition tells me that you've got more on your mind than romance.
JACK USHERS JENNIFER TO HER CHAIR AND SPREADS A NAPKIN ON HER LAP. HE LIGHTS THE CANDLES AND SITS DOWN IN HIS CHAIR. HE TAKES THE COVER OFF THE SERVING DISH, PAUSES, AND THEN SETS IT BACK DOWN AGAIN.JACK: All right. You've got me.
JENNIFER: I certainly hope so. I've got a marriage license that says so.
JACK: No, no. I mean you're right. I did all this to put you in a good mood because I have a proposition for you.
JENNIFER SMILES SMUGLY AND LEANS BACK IN HER CHAIR, WAITING. HOLD ON JACK'S NERVOUSNESS.JULIE: Hello, darling.CUT TO: EUTERPE. JULIE AND RICHARD COME IN, AND ARE SPOTTED BY DOUG.
DOUG KISSES JULIE ON THE CHEEK.DOUG: Greetings, fair lady. (GLANCING AT RICHARD) Should I play the jealous lover, since you've seen fit to take another man to dinner?
JULIE: You know I only have eyes for you, darling. (LIGHTLY KISSING DOUG)
RICHARD: (TEASING) No matter how hard I try.
DOUG CHUCKLES, THEN PICKS UP TWO MENUS.DOUG: Allow me to show you to our best table.
DOUG LEADS JULIE AND RICHARD TO A TABLE, THEN LEAVES. EVE SPOTS RICHARD, AND STARTS TO COME OVER TO THE TABLE.RICHARD: (LOOKING AT THE MENU) I wonder what the catch of the day is...
JULIE LOOKS UP AND SPOTS EVE, EYES ON RICHARD, COMING TO THE TABLE.JULIE: I'd say you are.
RICHARD: What?
EVE ARRIVES AT THE TABLE.EVE: Hello, Richard. (BEAT) Julie. (LEANING ACROSS THE TABLE, DISPLAYING HER DECOLLETAGE TO RICHARD) How are you? I haven't seen you in awhile.
RICHARD: (CAUTIOUSLY) Uh, I'm fine, Eve. And you?
EVE: I'm okay. It's so wonderful to see you.
JULIE LOOKS OVER TO DOUG, WHO ROLLS HIS EYES AT THE SCENE.EVE: (CONT'D) You know, Richard, you really should come back next week... I'll be singing on Thursday night, and I'd love it if you came.
RICHARD: Gee, Eve, that's nice of you to ask, but I don't know...
EVE: (CUTTING HIM OFF) It's a 40s night. You'll love it. I'll sing a romantic ballad just for you...
HOLD ON RICHARD'S DISCOMFORT.JOHN: (WALKING ON THE BOAT) Have the Brady fishermen caught anything today?CUT TO: BO'S BOAT / EXT. BO AND SHAWN-DOUGLAS ARE SITTING ON THE SIDE OF THE BOAT WITH FISHING POLES IN THEIR HANDS. BO NOTICES JOHN WALKING ON THE PIER AND WAVES TO HIM.
BO: Nah, nothing's biting yet.
JOHN SITS DOWN NEXT TO SHAWN-DOUGLAS, WHO IS STARING OFF INTO THE WATER.JOHN: What kind of bait ya got there, Shawn-D?
SHAWN-DOUGLAS IS QUIET, BUT LOOKS UP AT JOHN AND SHRUGS.BO: We're using Grandpa Shawn's extra plump worms. Don't you remember stringing them on the hook, Sailor?
SHAWN-DOUGLAS DOES NOT ACKNOWLEDGE BO. BO LOOKS AT JOHN AND SHRUGS.JOHN: Yeah, well if they're Shawn's worms, then you can guarantee a giant catch later on.
SHAWN-D: (NON-ENTHUSIASTIC) Uh-huh.
JOHN: We might need to get you a hat like your grandpa has, too. It's always seemed to work miracles for him.
BO: You mean his lucky hat? The one that blew off one day? Do you remember? He ended up in the river trying to get it back?
JOHN: (LAUGHING) Yeah, that's the one.
SHAWN-DOUGLAS BEGINS TO REEL IN HIS LINE.BO: Didya catch something, Sailor?
SHAWN-D: No, I'm tired.
BO: Why don't you give John your pole, and then go lie down below.
SHAWN-DOUGLAS HANDS JOHN HIS FISHING POLE. WITHOUT SAYING A WORD, HE STANDS UP AND WALKS INSIDE THE BOAT. JOHN CASTS THE FISHING LINE AND TURNS TO BO.JOHN: Guess he's not really in the mood for company.
BO: He hasn't been in a mood for anything lately.
JOHN: Looks like the poor boy's got the world on his shoulders.
BO SETS UP HIS FISHING POLE SO THAT IT IS STEADY ON THE SIDE OF THE BOAT. HE STANDS UP AND STARTS TO WALK AROUND. JOHN DOES THE SAME WITH HIS FISHING POLE AND TURNS TOWARDS BO.BO: I've tried everything I can think of. (BEAT) What do you think I should do?
JOHN: I don't know... Do you think he's still upset over Carly's murder?
BO: Probably...
BO WALKS OVER TO CHECK HIS FISHING LINE.BO: (CONT'D) I wonder if it would help if I told Shawn-D the truth about Carly?
OUT ON JOHN'S SURPRISE.
EUTERPE. EVE CONTINUES TO FAWN OVER RICHARD WHILE JULIE WATCHES IN DISGUST. IN PROGRESS.EVE: You know, Richard, I simply loved the last few articles you wrote in that magazine.
JULIE: Oh really, Eve? I didn't realize you read Midsummer.
EVE: I never miss it.
JULIE: Amazing. Especially since it's a magazine aimed at women over 40.
EVE: Oh I know. And it's amazing how good some of those women look at that age!
JULIES EYES WIDEN, AS RICHARD ATTEMPTS TO CHANGE THE SUBJECT.RICHARD: Uh, thank you, Eve. It's nice to know that my writing is appreciated.
EVE: (IGNORING JULIE'S DEATH STARE) Of course it is, silly!
EVE BEGINS TO GIGGLE. IN THE BACKGROUND, EVE NOTICES THAT IAN IS WATCHING THE INTERACTION BETWEEN HER AND RICHARD. EVE CASUALLY PLACES HER HAND ON RICHARD'S SHOULDER. RICHARD LOOKS AT EVE, OVERWHELMED, AND LETS OUT AN UNEASY LAUGH.JULIE: (UNDER HER BREATH) I've had enough of this.
EVE TURNS TOWARDS JULIE.EVE: (OVERLY SWEET) Did you say something, Julie?
JULIE LEANS IN CLOSE TO EVE.JULIE: (WHISPERING) Cool it, Eve... or I'll have to talk to your boss...
EVE STANDS UP, A LITTLE FLUSTERED. SHE STRAIGHTENS HER SKIRT OUT AND TURNS TO RICHARD.EVE: If you'll excuse me, Richard, there's something I need to do... in the kitchen.
RICHARD: Of course.
EVE SMILES SWEETLY AT RICHARD AND DOES NOT ACKNOWLEDGE JULIE. AS SHE TURNS TO LEAVE, SHE NOTICES THAT IAN IS STILL WATCHING AND SMILES TO HERSELF. RICHARD SHAKES HIS HEAD, STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT JUST HAPPENED.JULIE: I should apologize for Eve. Sometimes she comes off a bit strong.
RICHARD: (SIGHS) Um, well... my, she is something, isn't she?
JULIE: (LAUGHING) It's all right, Richard. Let's enjoy the rest of our meal and forget about Eve.
IN THE BACKGROUND, EVE WATCHES RICHARD. HOLD ON EVE'S MISCHIEVOUS SMILE.JENNIFER: (INTRIGUED) A proposition, hmmm?CUT TO: JACK AND JENNIFER'S LIVING ROOM. JACK AND JENNIFER ARE SEATED AT THE DINING TABLE. IN PROGRESS.
JACK: Yes.
JENNIFER: You've piqued my curiosity, Mr. D. (BEAT) I can't wait to hear it.
JACK: In that case, I'll get on with it. I've definitely had enough practice at this... proposing, that is.
JENNIFER: (SMILING) Yes, you have. You should be an expert by now.
JACK: I guess we'll find out soon enough.
JACK GETS DOWN ON ONE KNEE IN FRONT OF JENNIFER.JACK: (CONT'D) Jennifer Rose Horton Deveraux... You know how much I love you. (BEAT) But do you know why I love you?
JENNIFER: Why don't you tell me?
JACK TAKES JENNIFER'S HAND.JACK: All right... I love your warmth. I love the way your smile lights up the room. I love how you always believe in me, even when I don't believe in myself.
JENNIFER SMILES AND SQUEEZES JACK'S HAND.JACK: (CONT'D) I love the way you love our daughter, and... and the way you love me.
JENNIFER: Jack...
JACK: Yes?
JENNIFER: This is very sweet, but...
JACK: But what?
JENNIFER: Are you going to get around to your proposition anytime soon?
JACK: Why, yes... Please, I'm on a roll here.
JENNIFER SIGHS.JACK: (CONT'D) Now, where was I... Oh, yes... I also love your intellect, your inquisitiveness, your talent for writing a hard-hitting story and still giving it a heart.
JENNIFER: (CONFUSED) What...?
JACK: And so, I would like to propose that...
JENNIFER LEANS FORWARD IN ANTICIPATION.JACK: (CONT'D) You come back to work at the Spectator.
JENNIFER STARES AT JACK IN SHOCKED SILENCE.JACK: (CONT'D) Jennifer?
JENNIFER: Uh-huh...
JACK: Well?
JENNIFER: Um... I'm sorry.
JACK: Are you all right?
JENNIFER: Yes, I... I'm surprised, that's all.
JACK: Surprised, why?
JENNIFER: I didn't think you wanted me to work at the Spectator.
JACK: You didn't... Where did you get that idea?
JENNIFER: You never mentioned the idea of me coming back.
JACK: That's because I didn't think you wanted to come back.
JENNIFER: Why would you think that?
JACK: Well, I figured that after hosting your own TV talk show, coming back to the Spectator would be a step down for you.
JENNIFER: You figured wrong.
JACK GETS UP AND RETURNS TO HIS SEAT.JACK: Oh?
JENNIFER: Yes. Working with Jack Deveraux could never be a step down.
JACK: Thank you.
JENNIFER: But there is something that worries me...
JACK: What's that?
JENNIFER: If I did come back to the Spectator, would we be able to handle it?
JACK: Handle it? How do you mean?
JENNIFER: We'd be seeing each other all the time, night and day. (BEAT) Would we be able to handle all that togetherness?
HOLD ON JENNIFER'S CONCERN.EVE: (OVERLY CHEERFUL) Hell-o, Ian!CUT TO: EUTERPE. EVE WALKS UP TO IAN.
IAN: (DEADPAN) Hi, Eve.
EVE: I saw you watching me when I was talking to Richard. You weren't... jealous, were you?
IAN: No, Eve.
EVE: Well, that's good. (BEAT) I really like Richard. He's intelligent, funny, good-looking...
IAN: Yeah, he sounds like quite a guy.
EVE: (COYLY) And you said you weren't jealous...
IAN: Jealously serves no one but fools, Eve. (BEAT) Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got some work to do.
IAN HEADS TOWARD THE SOUND BOOTH.EVE: (SOTTO VOCE) No one but fools? I'd say you were more that a little green, Mr. Moreland. I will get to you yet.
OUT ON EVE'S GRIN.
EUTERPE. DAVE SHOWS VERN AND JO TO A COZY, SUBTLY LIT CORNER TABLE. JO AND VERN SIT. DAVE HANDS THEM MENUS, THEN WALKS AWAY. JO AND VERN STUDY THE MENU.JO: This lobster and vanilla bean sauce dish sounds interesting.
VERN: A good choice for dinner. I'd probably go for the strawberry cheesecake for dessert.
JO: Another good choice. (SHE SMILES)
VERN: Has Jack said anything? About us, I mean.
JO: No. At least not to me. Maybe he's finally coming to accept us.
VERN: I don't know about that...
EVE WALKS OUT OF THE KITCHEN AND SEES JO. EVE STORMS UP TO THE TABLE.EVE: How dare you! How dare you come in here after what you've done!!!
HOLD ON EVE'S RAGE.JOHN: I don't think that's a good idea, bro. It's hard enough for us to deal with the truth, never mind a little kid like Shawn-D.CUT TO: BO'S BOAT / EXT. JOHN AND BO ARE SITTING ON THE DECK. IN PROGRESS.
BO: You're right. I'm grasping at straws, I guess.
JOHN: Is it any easier dealing with Carly's death? I mean, now that you know the truth?
BO: No. I'm glad that I know, but finding out now... after she's gone...
JOHN PUTS HIS HAND ON BO'S SHOULDER.BO: (CONT'D) I'll never be able to talk to her about it. There are so many unanswered questions. (BEAT) Did she really love me? Or was she using me? And what about Shawn-D?
JOHN: I understand. I know what's it like to have a million questions running around in your head with no answers in sight.
BO: And you know what hurts the most? A part of me still loves her. Isn't that crazy? She betrayed every trust and I still miss her. (BEAT) What about you?
JOHN: How do I feel about Carly? (BEAT) Maybe a part of me still loves her, too. I don't know. My memory's still got a lot of holes in it. I haven't tracked down all the missing pieces yet.
BO: How do you deal with it?
JOHN: The only way I know how. One step at a time, one day at a time.
HOLD ON JOHN'S SADNESS.EVE: You killed Nick! You think you can just waltz in here like nothing's happened?CUT TO: EUTERPE. EVE, JO, VERN, DOUG AND JULIE. IN PROGRESS.
VERN: Eve... don't talk to Jo like that.
EVE: (POINTING AT JO) The police should have locked her up and thrown away the key! She's a killer! She murdered Nick!
JO BURSTS INTO TEARS, GETS UP AND RUNS OUT THE FRONT DOOR. EVE GLARES AFTER HER. VERN STANDS.VERN: (TO EVE) You are a cruel and vicious person. Jo Johnson is one of the kindest, most decent people I know.
VERN BOLTS OUT AFTER JO. OUT ON EVE'S ANGER.
JACK AND JENNIFER'S LIVING ROOM. IN PROGRESS.JACK: I think we can handle working together every day. After all, we've done it before.
JENNIFER: (SKEPTICAL) But that was before we were married... and had a family.
JACK: We can still do it, as long as we keep our priorities straight.
JENNIFER: What priorities?
JACK: We'll need to remember to keep our professional business at the office... and our personal business at home.
JENNIFER: What will everyone else think?
JACK: It doesn't matter what everyone else thinks. I'm the boss, remember?
JENNIFER: That's exactly the problem.
JACK: Jennifer, everyone who's been at the Spectator for a while knows what a good journalist you are. Besides, you'll make Vern's year.
JENNIFER: I don't want any favoritism.
JACK: I wouldn't dream of it.
JENNIFER PAUSES A MOMENT TO THINK. SLOWLY, SHE BEGINS TO SMILE.JENNIFER: You know, Jack, you're right.
JACK: (SLIGHTLY SURPRISED) I am?
JENNIFER: Yes, you are... and I accept your proposal!
JACK: (MISCHIEVOUS) Which proposal would that be? My professional one or my personal one?
JENNIFER: Why your professional one, of course. (IMPISH) As far as I know, no one's put a personal proposal on the table.
JACK SLAPS HIS HAND ON THE TABLE AND STANDS UP.JACK: I can definitely remedy that situation.
JACK EXTENDS HIS HAND TO JENNIFER. SHE TAKES HIS HAND AND STANDS UP. JACK WRAPS HIS ARMS AROUND HER AND KISSES HER PASSIONATELY.JENNIFER: (OUT OF BREATH) I accept that proposal, too, Mr. Deveraux!
JACK: (SMILING) Excellent decision, Mrs. Deveraux.
JACK SCOOPS JENNIFER UP INTO HIS ARMS AND KISSES HER AGAIN. THEN, HE CARRIES HER UP THE STAIRS. HOLD ON THE EMPTY STAIRCASE, FILLED ONLY BY THE SOUNDS OF LAUGHTER COMING FROM UPSTAIRS.EVE: Julie, what's wrong with you? Why are you looking at me like that?CUT TO: EUTERPE. JULIE IS GLARING ANGRILY AT EVE AS DOUG STANDS BY. EVE TURNS TO JULIE AND IS SURPRISED BY JULIE'S EXPRESSION.
JULIE: (FURIOUSLY) What's wrong with me? How can you even ask that question?
JULIE TAKES A DEEP BREATH AND MAKES A VISIBLE EFFORT TO CALM HERSELF.JULIE: (CONT'D) That was, without a doubt, the most cruel and vindictive thing I have ever seen you do, Eve. (BEAT) And I've seen you do some pretty horrible things.
EVE CROSSES HER ARMS DEFENSIVELY.EVE: I wouldn't expect you to understand.
JULIE: Why don't you try to explain it to me?
EVE: That woman killed Nick. And then she has the gall to come in here as if nothing happened!
JULIE: Jo Johnson has paid for her crime.
EVE: What, her little stay in the loony bin? That's hardly payment for what she did. She's psychotic! She's a murderer!
JULIE: She was ill at the time. Her son had been killed, and she lost control. She took revenge on the man responsible for Steve's death. (BEAT) You aren't going to try to deny what Nick did, are you?
EVE GLARES AT JULIE, BUT SAYS NOTHING.JULIE: (CONT'D) When Jo shot Nick, she wasn't well. She had mental problems. (BEAT) She did her part, she got help. She deserves a second chance.
EVE: Like hell she does.
JULIE: Don't you...
EVE: (INTERRUPTING) No, I don't want to hear it! I don't want to hear all that "temporary insanity" crap! Don't tell me how she's better now, and how we should all just move on and forget it! I can't forget it! The man I loved it dead, and nothing's going to change that!
JULIE: Eve...
EVE: I'll never forgive her for taking Nick away from me. Never!
DOUG STEPS FORWARD AND STANDS NEXT TO JULIE.DOUG: Perhaps you shouldn't be so quick to condemn, Eve.
EVE: What's that supposed to mean?
DOUG: Let me ask you something...
EVE: What?
DOUG: What would you have done, Eve, if no one had forgiven you for some of the things you've done? Where would you be now?
EVE STARTS TO REPLY, BUT THEN SHUTS HER MOUTH IN AN ANGRY POUT.JULIE: Think about it, Eve. A lot of people have given you a second chance, and then some.
EVE: I...
ANGRY AND CONFUSED, EVE TURNS AND STALKS OUT OF THE ROOM. DOUG PUTS HIS ARM AROUND JULIE.JULIE: I'm sorry about that, darling. I didn't mean to cause a scene.
DOUG: Don't worry, it's not your fault.
JULIE: I feel so badly for Jo.
DOUG: Yes, so do I. I feel badly for both of them.
JULIE: Both...?
DOUG: Yes. Jo and Eve. They're both in a great deal of pain...

VERN: No, she wasn't.
JO: Maybe I shouldn't be forgiven for what I did.
VERN: Jo, it's over. It's in the past. Let it go. I'm sure Eve didn't mean what she said.
JO: I think Eve meant every single word.
VERN: Listen to me... There are a lot of people out there who love you and understand why you did what you did.
JO: I don't know.
VERN: They forgave you a long time ago. Forgive yourself.
JO: I don't know if I can.
VERN: You have to.
JO: I know...
VERN: Remember, I'll be here for you if you need me.
JO: I think I need to be alone right now. (BEAT) But I appreciate the offer. Thank you, Vern.
JO OPENS THE DOOR.VERN: Are you sure you're all right.
JO: I'll be fine. Good-night.
VERN: Good-night. Call me if you need anything.

JACK: No, no, not that glow. I'm talking about your other glow.
JENNIFER: (SMILING) Oh... Well, either way, it's all because of you.
JENNIFER KISSES JACK.JENNIFER: (CONT'D) Thank you, Jack. Thank you for giving me the chance to come back to the Spectator and do something I love to do.

JACK GIVES JENNIFER A LINGERING KISS.JACK: (CONT'D) Of course, I'm not doing it just for you.
JENNIFER: No?
JACK: No. It's a very good business move to have someone of your talent working on the paper. I wouldn't want the competition to have a shot at you.
JENNIFER: As far as I'm concerned, there is no competition.
JACK: I'm glad to hear it.
JENNIFER: Good. Now, let's start following our new rule...
JACK: And which rule would that be?
JENNIFER: The one you came up with tonight: Leave the professional business at the office, and work on the personal business at home.
JACK: You're right.

BRADY GIGGLES.JOHN: (CONT'D) I want you to know that I haven't forgotten about that promise. I intend to fill in the holes in my memory. (BEAT) And I have to help Shane and the police uncover all the secrets in Carly's past.
BRADY LOOKS UP AT JOHN AND SMILES.JOHN: (CONT'D) Hopefully, that'll help them figure out who shot Carly and Bo. Maybe it'll help me, as well. Carly's past is linked to mine, so whatever we discover about her may help me remember more. (LONG BEAT) Anyway, I want you to know that I'm not giving up. Once I get this other stuff out of the way, I'm going to keep searching for those memories that haven't come back yet. Okay?
