TEASER

ALAMAIN LIVING ROOM/FOYER. IVAN IS OVERSEEING THE HOUSE STAFF AS THEY COVER THE LIVING ROOM FURNITURE AND PACK THE ITEMS ON THE BOOKSHELVES. VIVIAN WALKS DOWN THE STAIRS AND JOINS IVAN.

IVAN: All is going well, Madam.

VIVIAN: (SMILING) You have this operation running very smoothly, Ivan. (BEAT) How did I ever get along without you?

IVAN SMILES, BUT BEFORE HE CAN ANSWER HER, THE TELEPHONE RINGS. IVAN GOES TO ANSWER IT. ONE-WAY.

IVAN: Alamain residence. Who is calling? (BEAT) Just a moment please.

IVAN COVERS THE MOUTHPIECE OF THE TELEPHONE WITH HIS LEFT HAND.

IVAN: (CONT'D) It is Mr. Childress, Madam. (BEAT) He wishes to speak to you.

VIVIAN PAUSES, AND THEN TAKES THE TELEPHONE FROM IVAN.

VIVIAN: This is Vivian Alamain... I see... Yes, I'll be there shortly.

VIVIAN HANGS UP THE PHONE. SHE IS CLEARLY UPSET.

IVAN: What is it, Madam?

VIVIAN: Lawrence wants to see me... now. (BEAT) What if he's changed his mind about letting us go?

HOLD ON VIVIAN'S FEAR.

CUT TO: JANET'S OFFICE. JANET IS SITTING AT HER DESK, SURROUNDED BY FOLDERS. SHE HAS HER HAIR STYLED IN AN ELABORATE TWIST ON TOP OF HER HEAD. UNFORTUNATELY, THE EFFECT IS SPOILED BY THE THREE PENCILS STICKING OUT OF IT. MORGAN KNOCKS AND STICKS HIS HEAD AROUND THE DOOR.

MORGAN: Captain?

JANET DOESN'T LOOK UP FROM HER PAPERWORK BUT WAVES MORGAN IN.

JANET: What can I do for you, Morgan?

MORGAN: I can't find the carjacking files. Do you have them?

JANET SIMULTANEOUSLY POINTS TO A STACK OF FOLDERS ON THE FILING CABINET WHILE MOVING ANOTHER STACK IN FRONT OF HER.

JANET: Yup, they're in the "after lunch" pile.

MORGAN LOOKS AT ALL THE FILES AROUND THE ROOM AND THEN AT JANET. JANET STILL HAS NOT LOOKED AT MORGAN.

MORGAN: You're not planning on getting all this done today?

JANET: Sure, why not? Compared to some days, this is a walk in the park.

MORGAN: Janet. (BEAT) Are you all right?

JANET CONTINUES TO FLIP THROUGH FILES. SHE LOOKS AROUND FOR A PENCIL, THEN REMEMBERS THE ONES STUCK IN HER HAIR. SHE SIGNS A PAPER HERE, MAKES A NOTE THERE, AND GOES ON TO THE NEXT FILE.

JANET: I'm fine.

MORGAN: I don't think so. (BEAT) I think you're burying yourself in your work. I've barely seen you in the past three days.

JANET: I've been busy.

MORGAN: I'm worried about you.

JANET: Thanks Morgan, but that's not necessary. I'm just your basic harried police captain with a lot of work to do. I don't get paid to sit around eating donuts.

HOLD ON JANET'S ACTIVITY.

CUT TO: JAMES' OFFICE. JOHN SETTLES INTO A CHAIR TO BEGIN HIS SESSION WITH JAMES.

JAMES: So, how are things today, John?

JOHN: Can't complain, Doc, can't complain...

JAMES: I hear your nephew had quite a party for his birthday.

JOHN: That's a fact. Vivian, Ivan and I went all out for Nikki this time. It's been a hard year for him...

JAMES: For all of you. But when I spoke to Shawn-Douglas yesterday, he told me what a great time you had. It's important to make time for such things, particularly during stressful periods.

JOHN: Couldn't agree more, Doc. That party was just the ticket for all of us.

JAMES TURNS ON HIS TAPE RECORDER.

JAMES: So, how would you like to proceed today?

JOHN: Well, that depends. You see, Doc, I've had a few memories come back to me.

OUT ON JOHN'S ENTHUSIASM.

ACT I

JAMES' OFFICE. JOHN AND JAMES. IN PROGRESS.

JOHN: So, I've been taking the memories I do have, and replaying them in my mind, over and over again, hoping that they'll spark something else.

JAMES: And have they?

JOHN: In a way, yes. The other day, I was at lunch, thinking about Katerina's hidden letters, the man we know only by the letter "P," and the image of Katerina's journal. (BEAT) I didn't seem to be getting anywhere, so I headed back to the office. On my way, I passed by a department store...

JOHN PAUSES.

JAMES: Go on...

JOHN: As I walked by the store, I smelled something very familiar. I couldn't place it at first, but I knew that I recognized the perfume. I turned around, thinking that I had passed someone I knew.

JAMES: Had you?

JOHN: No. But I had passed by a perfume display that was set up at the front of the department store. (BEAT) I found the perfume, and then I remembered... It was the scent Katerina used to wear.

JAMES: This is very good, John. Did you remember anything else?

JOHN: Yeah. I caught a good whiff of the perfume, and I suddenly had a flashback to an argument I had with Katerina.

JAMES: Is this the same argument you remembered before?

JOHN: (FRUSTRATED) I... I'm not sure. It could be, but I can't be certain.

JAMES: That's all right. It's still progress...

JOHN: There's more.

JAMES: Excellent. Please, continue...

JOHN: In the midst of this argument, I remembered seeing a page from Katerina's journal. This time, it's not just a blur.

JAMES: You were able to see what was written?

JOHN: I think so. The only thing that I can clearly recall, is the date: December 21, 1985.

JAMES: Do you recall if that date has any significance?

JOHN: No. I don't even know if that's the date when that argument took place. It could have been weeks, or months later. (FRUSTRATED) Damn! If only I could remember what she had written on that page!

JAMES: I know I've said this before, but you have to be patient. You can't recover your memory any faster by forcing the issue. (BEAT) Look at the bright side: You can be fairly certain that this argument between you and Katerina occurred either on or after December 21, 1985. That narrows it down, right?

JOHN: (CONTEMPLATING) Right... (SNAPPING HIS FINGERS) Actually, it narrows the time down a lot!

JAMES: How so?

JOHN: December, 1985... It wasn't long after that that I showed up in Salem as the Pawn. That argument had to have happened right around December 21, or very shortly after that.

JAMES: There, you see? Each discovery is important.

JOHN: (IMPATIENTLY) Yeah, but still... I want more! I want to remember what Katerina and I were arguing about. I want to remember what I saw in that journal.

JAMES: Perhaps there's an easier way.

JOHN: What's that?

JAMES: Have you thought about trying to find the journal itself?

JOHN: I've considered it. But Katerina wasn't stupid. I'm sure she either destroyed the journal, or hid it very well.

JAMES: Maybe so, but there would be no harm in looking, would there?

JOHN: I guess not...

JAMES: A while ago, you mentioned going through Katerina's things, when the time was right. (BEAT) Perhaps, now, the time is right.

JOHN: (INTRIGUED) Maybe you're right, Doc. Maybe you're right...

HOLD ON JOHN.

CUT TO: JANET'S OFFICE. JANET AND MORGAN, IN PROGRESS.

MORGAN: Are you sure you're just busy? I think, maybe, you're upset about something.

JANET FINALLY LOOKS UP FROM HER PAPERWORK AND SIGHS.

JANET: Morgan, what would I be upset about? Believe me, I'm busy.

MORGAN: Are you sure you're not upset about the Alamain trial?

JANET: Why would I be upset over the trial? The good guys won, and Alamain's in jail for life.

MORGAN: Yeah, it certainly is nice to see justice served every once in a while, but...

JANET: But, what?

MORGAN: Things could've been resolved a lot sooner if the I.S.A. hadn't kept things from us.

JANET EXPRESSION SOURS.

JANET: The whole thing could've been avoided if everyone involved hadn't withheld information.

HOLD ON JANET.

CUT TO: COMMUNITY CENTER. KAYLA AND CANDIS ARE SETTING OUT MATS FOR THE SELF-DEFENSE CLASS.

KAYLA: Ya know, the next defense class student who wants to show me what she learned is going to need to know self-defense.

CANDIS: (LAUGHING) I know what you mean. Enthusiasm's great, but, I'm tired of being the test dummy.

KAYLA: One crash test too many?

CANDIS: Something like that... But it's been wonderful to see so many people here.

KAYLA: Yeah, it's great to see all the support and participation.

CANDIS: And we couldn't have done it without you. You got the Center back on its feet.

KAYLA: You're the one who worked so hard. We could never have made it the success it is without you.

CANDIS: (LAUGHING) Okay, how about we credit us both?

KAYLA: 'Sounds good.

CANDIS: The past year has been a pleasure. I've loved working with you.

KAYLA: And I, you. You've become a good friend, Candis.

KAYLA TOYS WITH THE EDGE OF ONE OF THE MATS.

CANDIS: There's something else on your mind, isn't there?

KAYLA: Maybe you've gotten to be too good a friend, if you can read me that well.

CANDIS: What is it?

KAYLA: Bill Horton called me today.

CANDIS: Doctor Horton? From University Hospital?

KAYLA: Yeah. (BEAT) The head nurse is retiring.

CANDIS: And?

KAYLA: He wants me to apply for the job.

CANDIS: That's very flattering.

KAYLA: And, I am flattered.

CANDIS: But... Are you interested?

OUT ON KAYLA'S INDECISION.

ACT II

COMMUNITY CENTER. KAYLA AND CANDIS. IN PROGRESS.

CANDIS: Well, Kayla? Are you interested?

KAYLA: Of course, I'm interested. This is something I've dreamed about ever since I decided to become a nurse.

CANDIS: Then, why don't you seem overjoyed?

KAYLA: If I take the position, wouldn't it leave you in the lurch here?

CANDIS: Not at all! Of course, I'd miss seeing you everyday. But, the Center is going strong now that it's back on its feet, and has solid funding.

KAYLA: I guess so...

CANDIS: Kayla, if you want to work at the hospital, you should pursue that goal. Besides, having another "in" at the hospital would be great for the Center.

KAYLA: You're right. (BEAT) And, I'd love to work at the hospital again. I already know most of the staff.

SUDDENLY KAYLA BITES HER LIP, WORRIED.

CANDIS: What's wrong?

KAYLA: (CONT') Marcus works at the hospital. Would that be too much togetherness for us?

HOLD ON KAYLA'S WORRY.

CUT TO: SALEM POLICE STATION. BO IS SEATED AT A DESK, TYPING UP AN ARREST REPORT. BOB IS TAKING THE SEEDY-LOOKING PERP TOWARD THE HOLDING AREA.

BOB: I'll be back in a jiff, after I show Mr. Sunshine, here, to his room.

BO: Gotcha. (NODDING TOWARD THE TYPEWRITER) I should be done with this by the time you get back.

BOB EXITS WITH THE PERP. BO TURNS BACK TO THE TYPEWRITER, BUT HE IS INTERRUPTED BY JOE, WHO IS SEATED AT THE DESK NEXT TO HIM.

JOE: Brady, there's a call for you on line two.

BO: Thanks, Joe.

BO PICKS UP THE PHONE AND PRESSES THE BUTTON FOR LINE TWO. PHONE CONVERSATION, TWO-WAY.

BO: (CONT'D) Bo Brady.

JOHN: Hey, Bo. It's John.

BO: Hi, John. What's up?

JOHN: Listen, I'm sorry to bother you at work, but I just got out of a session with Dr. Ector, and I need to follow up on an idea we had...

BO: Don't worry about it, man. It's no bother. (BEAT) What idea?

JOHN: I'd like to see if I can jar my memory by going through Kater... Carly's stuff. I know Kimmie stored it at Shawn and Caroline's. (BEAT) I wanted to check with you, first, and make sure you're okay with it.

BO: Yeah... Yeah, I'm okay with that.

JOHN: 'You sure?

BO: You bet. Lord knows, those things aren't doing any good just sitting in Ma and Pop's attic. (BEAT) If looking through them can help you in some way, then go for it.

JOHN: Thanks, bro. This means a lot.

BO: No problem. I know how important it is to know where you came from. (BEAT) Even if it's not what we want, or what we expect, we all need to know the truth.

JOHN: That's a fact. I'm hoping there may be something there that'll give me another clue, or trigger another memory.

BO: I hope so, too. (BEAT) Let me know if you find anything, okay?

JOHN: Sure...

BO: Our reasons are different, but I think we both need to find out the truth about Carly, so we can both get on with our lives.

JOHN: Yeah, you're right. We both have a stake in this.

BO: When were you going to go over?

JOHN: Right away, while everything's fresh in my mind. I'm at the hospital, but I plan to go over to Shawn and Caroline's as soon as I hang up.

BO: Well, good luck.

JOHN: Thanks.

BO: And thank you. I appreciate the call.

JOHN: Hey, I know that this is still a sensitive area for you. I'm not gonna do anything that'll cause you any more pain.

BO: Thanks. I know it's not easy to stop and take the time, when you're hot on the trail.

JOHN: Yeah, well, even when you're hot on the trail, family comes first.

BO: You know it. (BEAT) I'd better get back to work. Tell Ma and Pop "hi" for me, okay?

JOHN: Will do. Talk to you later.

BO: Later.

BO HANGS UP THE PHONE.

BO: (CONT'D) I hope you find what you're looking for, John.

BO SHAKES HIS HEAD AND TURNS BACK TO HIS TYPEWRITER, FINISHING THE TYPING OF HIS ARREST REPORT WITH A FLOURISH. HE LOOKS IT OVER WITH PRIDE.

BO: (CONT'D) Not bad. I only had to start it over once.

BOB WALKS BACK IN AND OVERHEARS.

BOB: (LAUGHING) Now you've gone and done it! The next one will take you all day.

BO LOOKS UP AND LAUGHS, TOO.

BOB: (CONT'D) C'mon. Captain wants to see us on the carjacking cases.

BO STANDS UP HASTILY AND AUTOMATICALLY CHECKS TO SEE IF HIS UNIFORM IS TIDY. BOB LOOKS OVER HIS SHOULDER.

BOB: (CONT'D) You look fine.

BO: Wha...? Oh, yeah. Some habits die hard.

CUT TO: JANET'S OFFICE. BOB AND BO ENTER TO FIND JANET ON THE PHONE. THEY START TO BACK OUT THE DOOR, BUT SHE WAVES THEM IN. THEY STAND AWKWARDLY AND SHIFT FROM FOOT TO FOOT AS SHE FINISHES HER CONVERSATION.

JANET: Yes sir... As I said before, the Department is doing everything we can to resolve this situation... No sir... I've got my best officers working on it... Of course the safety of Salem's residents is my first priority, your daughter included... Yes sir... You'll be the first to know... Thank you.

JANET HANGS UP THE PHONE AND GLARES AT IT. SHE TURNS HER GAZE ON BOB AND BO AND THEY STRAIGHTEN UP. JANET TAKES A DEEP BREATH AND RUNS HER HAND THROUGH HER HAIR. SHE LOOKS AT THEM MORE CALMLY.

JANET: (CONT'D) Sorry, that wasn't meant for you. (BEAT) That was Councilman Blake. His daughter is the latest carjacking victim and he's become a raving lunatic.

BOB: Most parents would react that way.

JANET: True, but most parents don't have the power to put me on the unemployment line. (BEAT) What's the status on the carjacking cases? Please tell me you've got a fantastic lead.

BO AND BOB LOOK AT EACH OTHER UNEASILY. OUT ON THEIR HESITATION.

ACT III

SALEM JAIL. VIVIAN SITS ALONE IN A CONFERENCE ROOM. THE DOOR OPENS AND A GUARD ESCORTS IN LAWRENCE. LAWRENCE SITS. THE GUARD STANDS UNOBTRUSIVELY IN THE CORNER.

LAWRENCE: Hello, Vivian.

VIVIAN: Hello Lawrence. You look well.

LAWRENCE: Prison blue suits me, you think?

VIVIAN: I...

LAWRENCE: (INTERRUPTING) Don't...

VIVIAN STOPS, UNSURE OF LAWRENCE'S MOOD.

LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) How's Nikki?

VIVIAN: He's doing well.

LAWRENCE: And his birthday celebration?

VIVIAN: He loved your present.

VIVIAN PULLS A CARD OUT OF HER HANDBAG AND HANDS IT TO LAWRENCE.

VIVIAN: (CONT'D) He wanted me to give you this thank you card.

LAWRENCE TAKES THE ENVELOPE AND LOOKS AT IT. NOT OPENING IT, HE LIGHTLY RUNS HIS HAND OVER THE NEAT BOYISH CURSIVE ON THE ENVELOPE. IT READS: "LAWRENCE."

LAWRENCE: Please thank Nikki. And thank you, Vivian, for getting him a gift from me.

VIVIAN: I didn't think you'd be able to get away to do any shopping.

LAWRENCE SMILES WEAKLY, AS IF THE FIGHT HAS SIMPLY GONE OUT OF HIM. VIVIAN STUDIES HIM.

VIVIAN: (CONT'D) Lawrence... what is it?

HOLD ON LAWRENCE'S MOODINESS.

CUT TO: JANET'S OFFICE. JANET, BO, AND BOB. IN PROGRESS.

BOB: I'm sorry, Captain, but we don't have any new leads. Whoever's behind these carjackings knows what they're doing. (BEAT) The only witnesses have been the victims themselves.

BO: Yeah, and the only witness that could give us any kind of a description was the woman who was attacked outside of Carver and Carver. And the only thing she could be sure of was that it was two men, medium height, medium build, wearing ski masks.

JANET: (FRUSTRATED) This isn't good, men. (BEAT) Councilman Blake was demanding to know what we're doing to catch the guys who took his daughter's car, and I don't even have a full report of the incident yet.

BOB: Ms. Blake was in no condition to give a statement, Captain.

BO: She was nearly hysterical when we arrived. She couldn't even tell us how many perps she saw. One minute, she was saying one. The next, she thought it may have been four...

JANET: How soon before you can get a full statement from her?

BOB: I'm going to follow up later today, to see if she's up to it. Hopefully, we'll have a full statement by tomorrow.

BO: We didn't want to push her too hard.

JANET: Understood. Considering who she is, I think handling it with care is wise. (BEAT) On the other hand, considering who she is, there's going to be a lot more pressure from City Hall to get this case solved, and fast.

BO: Sounds like a no-win situation. We can't afford to push this girl, but we can't afford to wait, either.

BOB: (WRYLY) Welcome to politics, partner.

JANET: Listen, you two. I know what you're thinking, and I agree. Between you and me, Councilman Blake's daughter is no more special than any of the other victims. (BEAT) But Councilman Blake doesn't see it that way. And Councilman Blake is in a position where he can make my life miserable. And if he's making my life miserable...

JANET EYES BO AND BOB.

BOB: We've got it, Captain. The string of carjackings is our number one priority, and this particular carjacking is at the top of the list.

JANET: Good answer. (BEAT) Is that understood, Brady?

BO: Understood.

JANET: Good. Now, get out there and catch these carjackers.

BO AND BOB STAND UP AND EXIT, CLOSING THE DOOR BEHIND THEM.

JANET: (CONT'D) (SOTTO VOCE) And, please, do it quickly.

HOLD ON JANET'S CONCERN.

CUT TO: COMMUNITY CENTER. KAYLA LOOKS AT CANDIS AND THEN AWAY. SHE STARTS CHEWING HER LIP.

CANDIS: Since when is too much togetherness a bad thing? Unless... is there a problem between you and Marcus?

KAYLA: No, everything's great. I guess I just don't want to rock the boat. (BEAT) I haven't been this happy since before Steve died and... it's almost hard to get used to.

CANDIS: I know what you mean, but you will. It's obvious that Marcus adores you.

KAYLA: (PLEASED) It is? I think he's pretty special, too. I hope that that's just as obvious.

CANDIS: (LAUGHING) I think it's a safe bet to say that everyone knows how happy you are. And we're just as happy for you.

KAYLA: (FROWNING) Not everyone. My father is not pleased... and not afraid to show it.

CANDIS: Well, no daddy is willing to admit that any man is good enough for his little girl. My father was the same way about Morgan.

KAYLA: This is different. I don't think Pop will ever come around and accept our relationship.

WHISTLING IS HEARD FROM OUTSIDE. KAYLA SMOOTHS HER HAIR AND STRAIGHTENS HER CLOTHES.

KAYLA: (CONT'D) Oh, there's Marcus now. Do I look all right?

CANDIS: (AMUSED) You look wonderful. And I'd say things are going fine. It didn't take you long to recognize Marcus' whistle.

KAYLA BLUSHES. MARCUS ENTERS AND STRIDES OVER TO THE TWO WOMEN.

MARCUS: Hello, Candis. You're looking well. (KISSING KAYLA ON THE CHEEK) And Kayla, you know how I feel about your looks.

KAYLA HIDES HER FACE AGAINST MARCUS' SHOULDER FOR A MOMENT AND PLAYFULLY HITS HIM ON THE SHOULDER. HE GRINS. HE TAKES A PIECE OF PAPER OUT OF HIS POCKET AND HOLDS IT UP.

MARCUS: (CONT'D) Ready to hit the toy stores for Abigail's birthday present? Stephanie gave me a list of all the "coolest" toys to choose from.

KAYLA: She did, did she?

MARCUS: With a few things thrown in for herself. If we should happen to see them, of course.

KAYLA: That's my daughter!

OUT ON THE THREE LAUGHING.

ACT IV

BRADY PUB. THE PUB IS BUSY. SHAWN IS BEHIND THE BAR FILLING A DRINK ORDER. JOHN WALKS IN AND SHAWN WAVES ENTHUSIASTICALLY.

SHAWN: John, m'lad! Come in, come in!

JOHN WEAVES HIS WAY THROUGH THE PATRONS AND SITS ON A BAR STOOL IN FRONT OF SHAWN.

JOHN: Hi, Shawn. Things look busy here.

SHAWN: Ah, business is booming, never better. If this keeps up I'll have to hire another barman.

JOHN: That's great!

SHAWN: And it's all thanks to you, John. I can't tell you what having the pub means to me.

JOHN: I think that big grin on your face says it all, Shawn. I was happy to do it.

SHAWN: And how is young Brady?

JOHN: He's becoming quite the little Romeo. He can't wait to get to Deveraux Daycare and woo all his little girlfriends. He pouts if I say we're staying home.

SHAWN: (LAUGHING) It'll get worse from here, believe me! A chip off the old block, he is.

CAROLINE COMES OUT FROM THE KITCHEN. SHE GOES AROUND THE BAR TO GIVE JOHN A HUG AND KISS.

CAROLINE: John, hello! I didn't know you were coming.

JOHN: (TEASING) I don't need a reason, do I?

CAROLINE: Of course not! We love to see you any time, reason or not.

JOHN: (SERIOUS) But I do have one. Bo thought that you might have some of Carly's things.

SHAWN: Carly? Why on earth do you want to dredge up all that?

JOHN: Dr. Ector thinks it might be good for me to look through them.

CAROLINE: Kimmie took most of it over to the Community Center, but we did keep some personal things for Bo.

CAROLINE WALKS OVER TO THE STAIRS. JOHN FOLLOWS.

CAROLINE: They're in the attic, I'll show you where.

JOHN RECOILS IN MOCK HORROR.

JOHN: Not the attic! (TURNING TO SHAWN) If I'm not back in a week, send a search party!

SHAWN LAUGHS. CAROLINE, WAGGING HER FINGER, TRIES TO LOOK STERN BUT BREAKS INTO LAUGHTER AS WELL.

CAROLINE: Now stop that! That door was fixed years and years ago! You kids are never going to let me forget that, will you?

CAROLINE AND JOHN HEAD TOWARDS THE STAIRS.

JOHN: Never! We were up there for weeks! And we might still be up there if Kayla hadn't started tap dancing.

CAROLINE: It was an hour, two at the most!

JOHN: I think it was weeks... I... (JOHN STOPS, AS REALIZATION DAWNS) I guess those are Roman's memories, aren't they?

CAROLINE AND SHAWN STOP AND LOOK AT EACH OTHER, UNSURE HOW TO RESPOND.

JOHN: (CONT'D) So, I guess if I want my own childhood memories, I'd better start looking through Carly's things right now...

HOLD ON JOHN.

CUT TO: PATROL CAR. BO AND BOB ARE RETURNING TO THE LATEST CRIME SCENE. BO IS DRIVING.

BO: Bob, can you run down what we already know about the carjackings?

BOB: 15 attacks in the last 10 weeks. There are no serious injuries, but, lots of frightened people.

BO: No description of the perps?

BOB: They're between 5'6" and 6'0" tall... Caucasian, Asian, or Hispanic... probably wearing blue jeans.

BO: Not much to go on.

BOB: With a description like that, you or I could be the assailant.

BO: Well I know where I was last night... Where were you?

BOB: Funny, Brady, very funny. If this career fails, you should try out on Star Search.

BO: Instead of talking to Ed McMahon, why don't we go back and question the victims again? Maybe one of the neighbors saw something. (SIGHS) There's got to be a lead we're overlooking.

BOB: I hope so, Partner. The Captain isn't happy, the City Council isn't happy and the hapless citizens of Salem are in danger. We gotta nail this guy, before someone really gets hurt.

HOLD ON BOB.

CUT TO: SALEM JAIL. LAWRENCE AND VIVIAN. IN PROGRESS.

LAWRENCE: Over the past few days, I've been contemplating how I've led my life, and I think that I can pinpoint the beginning of my downfall.

VIVIAN: Oh?

LAWRENCE: Katerina. (BEAT) It always comes back to Katerina.

LAWRENCE RUNS HIS HANDS THROUGH HIS HAIR, BUT DOESN'T MAKE EYE CONTACT WITH VIVIAN.

LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) She betrayed me. She used me and tossed me aside when I no longer met her needs. (BEAT) And then there's you...

LAWRENCE STARES AT VIVIAN.

LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) I adored my Auntie Vivian. (BEAT) Until she stole Nicholas away from me.

VIVIAN STARES BACK AT LAWRENCE, APPREHENSIVE.

LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) Nicholas is my one shining accomplishment. The one thing of which I can be proud...

LAWRENCE STARES DOWN AT THE TABLE.

LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) But I don't know if I deserve him. After what I did to Jennifer Horton and what I tried to do to Bo Brady... (BEAT) And Father... I never meant to hurt him.

TEARS WELL IN LAWRENCE'S EYES.

LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) Maybe you were right, Vivian... maybe Nicholas will be better off growing up without me.

OUT ON LAWRENCE'S PAIN.

ACT V

SALEM JAIL. LAWRENCE AND VIVIAN. IN PROGRESS.

LAWRENCE: I see now, that no matter what happens, there isn't any hope that I'll be able to be there for Nicholas... as a father.

VIVIAN: I know this hurts you, Lawrence, but can't you see that it's the best for Nikki?

LAWRENCE: I suppose so. But Nikki's probably the only child I'll ever have. There's so much I want for him.

VIVIAN: He can still have everything.

LAWRENCE: I know. (BEAT) I just won't be able to give it to him. I won't be able to watch him grow up.

LAWRENCE CLASPS HIS HANDS TOGETHER AND TAKES A DEEP BREATH.

LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) If I can't be there for my son, then my only hope is to make sure that he doesn't hate me. (BEAT) Do you think that's still possible?

VIVIAN: It's never too late... if you try...

LAWRENCE STUDIES VIVIAN FOR A LONG BEAT.

LAWRENCE: All right, Vivian, you win. I don't want Nicholas to hate me. And the only way that I can ensure that is to let you... and my son go...

VIVIAN LETS OUT A SIGH OF RELIEF, AND CLOSES HER EYES.

VIVIAN: (QUIET) Thank you, Lawrence.

HOLD ON VIVIAN'S RELIEF.

CUT TO: SALEM PLACE / TOY STORE. MARCUS AND KAYLA ARE BROWSING.

MARCUS: I can hardly believe that little Abby is going to turn two years old!

KAYLA: I find it even harder to believe that Jack actually performed the delivery.

MARCUS: (LAUGHING) Yeah, that guy's full of surprises.

THEY WANDER INTO THE STUFFED ANIMAL SECTION. MARCUS PICKS UP A TEDDY BEAR AND HOLDS IT IN FRONT OF KAYLA.

MARCUS: (CONT'D) (HIGH PITCHED VOICE) Hello there, pretty lady. My name is Marcus Bear.

KAYLA: (LAUGHING) Hello, Marcus Bear.

MARCUS: (CONTINUING WITH THE "BEAR" VOICE) Do you think your little niece will like me?

KAYLA: I think Abby would love you, but remember, we're dealing with Jack as one of the parents.

MARCUS PUTS DOWN THE TEDDY BEAR.

MARCUS: Yeah, you're right. We should probably go for something a little more... I don't know... upscale? Maybe a home computer?

KAYLA: Don't joke about that, Marcus. Jennifer told me that Jack already has one picked out for Abby.

MARCUS: Why am I not surprised?

KAYLA TURNS AND LOOKS AROUND.

KAYLA: (POINTING) How about one of those Disney videos?

MARCUS PICKS UP A COPY OF "SNOW WHITE."

MARCUS: Good idea. Entertaining, yet classic.

KAYLA: Lots of humor... action... But I don't know... think it might be a little violent for Abby?

MARCUS: Snow White?

KAYLA: Hey, a wicked witch poisons Snow White with an apple.

MARCUS: Well... maybe it will teach Abby to beware of strangers bearing gifts.

KAYLA: Or maybe it will teach her never to accept apples from weird little old ladies.

MARCUS: Ahhh... Kay?

KAYLA: Yes?

MARCUS: I think we're getting a little dopey...

KAYLA: And maybe grumpy, hey Doc?

MARCUS LOOKS AT KAYLA AND THROWS UP HIS HANDS. BOTH LAUGH. HOLD ON THEIR LAUGHTER.

CUT TO: BRADY ATTIC. JOHN AND CAROLINE ARE RUMMAGING THROUGH ASSORTED BOXES AND TRUNKS LOOKING FOR CARLY'S PERSONAL EFFECTS. CAROLINE FINALLY POINTS OUT THREE BOXES LABELED "CARLY."

CAROLINE: These three, John.

JOHN: Thanks, Caroline.

CAROLINE: What are you looking for?

JOHN: I'm not sure, but it can't hurt to look.

JOHN OPENS THE FIRST BOX.

CAROLINE: Are you sure this is a good idea?

JOHN: No. But it's my only idea. There might be something in here that will trigger my memory.

CAROLINE: You really are counting on this, aren't you?

JOHN: You have no idea how important it is to me to find my past.

CAROLINE: But, you have a good life... a wonderful son... (PLACING HER HAND ON HIS SHOULDER) And, the Bradys will always be your family.

JOHN: The Bradys mean everything to me. But, I won't feel whole until I can piece together my past.

CAROLINE: All right, John. I'll leave you with the boxes. But, remember: Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.

JOHN: (SMILING) Warning taken.

CAROLINE LEAVES. JOHN BEGINS TO SORT THROUGH THE BOX. OUT ON JOHN.

ACT VI

BRADY ATTIC. JOHN PULLS OPEN THE SECOND BOX.

JOHN: Carly, you've hidden your secrets well.

HE BEGINS TO SORT THROUGH THE BOX.

JOHN: (CONT'D) Hmmm.. appraisals on various pieces of jewelry. You obviously kept Dani busy... Leases... penthouse apartments in... Paris... Athens... Rome... New York... London... Stockholm. (SHAKING HIS HEAD) Why, why did you come to Salem, Carly?

JOHN PUTS ASIDE THE LEASES AND DIGS FURTHER INTO THE BOX.

JOHN: (CONT'D) Bills of sale for some artwork... Wonder if it was legit?

JOHN REMOVES ALL THE OFFICIAL LOOKING DOCUMENTS, AND UNDERNEATH FINDS A BOX COVERED IN BLUE SATIN. JOHN REMOVES THE SMALL BOX AND OPENS IT.

JOHN: (CONT'D) Ahh, this is what I was looking for... correspondence.

JOHN TAKES A DEEP BREATH AND PAUSES, STARTLED.

JOHN: (CONT'D) There it is, again... that perfume.

JOHN BEGINS LOOKING THROUGH THE LETTERS.

JOHN: (CONT'D) Letters from Frankie... Hmmmm...

CONTINUING TO SORT THROUGH THE LETTERS, JOHN NOTICES THERE ARE MANY WITH THE SAME HANDWRITING.

JOHN: (CONT'D) My, my Carly... Looks like you had at least one ardent, if mysterious, admirer. (STUDYING ONE OF THE LETTERS) Do I know this writing? (SHAKES HIS HEAD) And all unsigned... no dates... Damn!

HOLD ON JOHN'S FRUSTRATION.

CUT TO: BRADY PUB. KAYLA AND MARCUS ENTER. MARCUS IS CARRYING A BAG FROM THE TOY STORE. THEY GO TO A BOOTH AND SIT DOWN. CAROLINE WALKS OVER TO THEM, CARRYING A POT OF COFFEE.

MARCUS: (POINTING TO THE COFFEE POT) Now that's what I need.

KAYLA LAUGHS AS CAROLINE POURS FOR THEM.

CAROLINE: You two look like you've been busy.

KAYLA: We got a present for Abigail's birthday.

MARCUS: That toy store was unbelievable, Caroline. (BEAT) I couldn't believe that they had a whole wall of Power Rangers merchandise.

KAYLA: Don't forget the 20 different versions of Simba the Lion King.

MARCUS: I think my favorite was the bumble ball.

KAYLA: That's because he couldn't find a slinky...

CAROLINE AND KAYLA BOTH LAUGH, AND MARCUS BEGINS TO CHUCKLE. AT THE BAR, SHAWN IS SLOWLY WIPING A GLASS DRY. HOLD ON SHAWN AS HE SCOWLS AT MARCUS.

CUT TO: SALEM JAIL. LAWRENCE AND VIVIAN. IN PROGRESS.

LAWRENCE: I have something for you, Vivian.

LAWRENCE REMOVES AN ENVELOPE FROM HIS POCKET. HE PUTS THE ENVELOPE ON THE TABLE AND SLIDES IT TOWARD VIVIAN.

VIVIAN: What is this?

LAWRENCE: It's a letter for Nikki. I want you to give it to him for me.

VIVIAN: I don't understand...

LAWRENCE: It's really quite simple. I've spoken with Childress, and he's taking care of all the paperwork. (BEAT) All of my personal holdings are to be put in trust for Nikki. (BEAT) I've designated you as the trustee.

VIVIAN: (SHOCKED) Me?

LAWRENCE: Yes.

VIVIAN: (GATHERING HERSELF) I'm sorry... It's just that, in light of the... conversations we've had recently, I didn't think you would trust me with a dime of your money.

LAWRENCE: Neither did I. (BEAT) However, I've spent a lot of time thinking... there's not much else I can do right now, except think... and I've come to realize that, despite all your faults, there is one good thing that has been constant throughout.

VIVIAN LEANS FORWARD, LISTENING INTENTLY.

LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) You have always loved my son. And he has always loved you. That's been the one thing he's known all his life.

VIVIAN: And it will be that way, forever...

LAWRENCE: I know it will. (BEAT) I'm not going to do anything to take that away from him.

LAWRENCE'S EYES BEGIN TO WELL WITH TEARS. HE STOPS TO REGAIN HIS COMPOSURE.

LAWRENCE: (CONT'D) Take care of my son, Vivian. Make sure he grows up to be a good, strong man.

VIVIAN: (PUTTING HER HAND ON LAWRENCE'S) I will. I promise.

LAWRENCE: And make sure he knows that I love him. Above all else, make sure that he knows that. (BEAT) Please.

LAWRENCE MAINTAINS HIS RIGID EXPRESSION, EVEN WHEN A SINGLE TEAR FALLS DOWN HIS CHEEK. VIVIAN TRIES TO MUSTER UP A REASSURING SMILE, BUT DOESN'T HAVE MUCH SUCCESS. OUT ON LAWRENCE.

ACT VII

BRADY ATTIC. JOHN TAKES A PAIR OF FANCY EVENING SHOES OUT OF THE THIRD BOX. HE LOOKS THEM OVER.

JOHN: Nice, I guess. But I don't know what they'd mean to Bo...

JOHN SHRUGS AND PUTS THEM TO ONE SIDE. NEXT, HE PULLS OUT A BOOK OF POETRY. HE LEAFS THROUGH IT, DISLODGING SOME PRESSED FLOWERS.

JOHN: (CONT'D) The collected works of e. e. cummings? That doesn't fit my image of you, Carly.

HE PUTS THE BOOK ON A PILE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF HIM.

JOHN: (CONT'D) I'll look through that later. There might be some clues...

NEXT, JOHN BRINGS OUT A SMALL INLAID BOX. INSIDE IS A TINY GOLD RING. HE TAKES IT OUT AND HOLDS IT UP IN HIS TWO FINGERS.

JOHN: (CONT'D) The friendship ring that matches Jennifer's. (BEAT) With friends like you...

JOHN PUTS THE RING BACK IN THE BOX AND STARTS TO LAY IT ASIDE. HE STOPS SUDDENLY AND WEIGHS THE BOX IN HIS HAND. HE BEGINS TO EXAMINE IT MORE CLOSELY AND RUNS HIS FINGERS OVER IT.

JOHN: (CONT'D) This box is too heavy to hold just a little ring...

JOHN TRIES PRESSING THE TOP OF THE BOX, THEN ONE SIDE, THEN THE OTHER. SUDDENLY, THE BOX COMES APART IN JOHN'S HANDS.

JOHN: (CONT'D) Bingo! A hidden compartment!

JOHN LAYS ONE HALF OF THE BOX ON HIS LAP AND TAKES A KEY OUT OF THE OTHER HALF. HE HOLDS IT UP TO THE LIGHT.

JOHN: (CONT'D) Hmmm. I wonder what secrets this little beauty unlocks? It's got a number on it... (SQUINTING) 7580... Now what can that mean?

HOLD ON JOHN'S PUZZLEMENT.

CUT TO: SALEM JAIL. VIVIAN STANDS AND WALKS BEHIND LAWRENCE. SHE BENDS SLIGHTLY TO PUT HER ARMS AROUND HIS SHOULDERS. LAWRENCE STIFFENS SLIGHTLY, BUT THEN HIS FACE RELAXES SOMEWHAT, AS IF HE APPRECIATES THE CONTACT BUT REFUSES TO ADMIT IT. THE GUARD STARTS TO MAKE A MOVE, THEN STANDS BACK UP AGAINST THE WALL, CLOSELY OBSERVING THE SCENE.

VIVIAN: If there is one thing I know, Lawrence, it is that you truly do love Nikki.

LAWRENCE: More than I thought possible.

VIVIAN: I remember how I felt when I first saw him... (SMILE) It was love at first sight...

VIVIAN WALKS AROUND TO FACE LAWRENCE.

VIVIAN: (CONT'D) Just like his father...

LAWRENCE: Pardon?

VIVIAN: Yes... I love Nikki's father... I always have...

LAWRENCE: Even after...

VIVIAN: Yes, even after everything you've done. (BEAT) I remember the first time we met... Do you?

LAWRENCE: Yes... I think so...

VIVIAN: You walked up to me, as proper a little man as I'd ever seen, and said, "You're my Aunt Vivian. You're beautiful, and I love you."

LAWRENCE: I had a flower...

VIVIAN: An orchid from your father's hothouse.

LAWRENCE: How Father loved his gardens...

VIVIAN: You stole my heart that day... and a part of it will be yours... always....

VIVIAN EMBRACES LAWRENCE, WHO FINALLY RETURNS THE EMBRACE. OUT ON THE EMBRACE. FADE TO BLACK.
